Wolf DDC/DUC and RS-998 - what to expect from this radio

- I get a lot of questions and mostly because people think this is radio that works perfectly out of the box. it takes some tweaking and possible calibration but the rewards are fantastic. Most of what i hear is user error. There are some hardware failures, so make sure you order from a vendor with a good return policy and warranty. Before returning the radio talk to some experienced users. We have a great Facebook group for the Wolf. Lots of people to help you there

Hi, Thank you for the information on this fine looking radio, but I still do have a few questions.
Does the RS-998 have anyway to be controlled via a external computer connected and with a specific SDR software other than its built in touch screen ?
Is there anyway to output the onscreen display to a large computer /tv monitor ??
Is there a online user manual ? as I have not found any so far.
Any info is much appreciated. thanks.
Yes, via a USB port. I have had WSJT-X running via CAT and built in sound card. No place to attach an external monitor. If you join the Wolf Facebook group and there is a manual in the files section, not a great manual but a manual
Hey, thanks for the video, I'm just discovering these. Is there a tuner on these? I can't see a tuner or accessory plug on them, so I imagine you can't have ptt out and hook it to an AT?
The 100w version has a tuner. It also has an external port that has pins to help you with an external port but not what you see on other radios. The have a PTT pin and a ground pin. This gives 12 volts on receive and zero volts on transmit. You would have build some sort of relay driven by this voltage to get a true PTT TRX signal for an amp
Please post some comparisons to your other radios. I would love to see this compared to a flex 6600 m. I'm also wondering how clean the radio transmits. Thank you for all the great videos.
Most of my other radio are QRP rigs but as I have time I will do that. I have a friend who has ordered one and he has a flex. I will see if he can do that

Hi Mike , I have watch all your videos and they have been very helpful but I got a problem with dial calibration when i go to the nets that i frequent they tell me that i am 100 cycles low or off, y tried transmitting with my 7600 at minum power on a dummy load across several bands and i have confirm that i did i am off 100cycles off, is a frequency calibration in the menus that I am missing.
Also there is no more updates by OTA mi latest is 9.51 any other way to get the latest 9.71?
Is there a way to reduce drive power like you do with icom rigs so you can go from full power down 20 watts without changing the calibrated value .

If you are on the RS-998, make sure the TCXO is set to 19200

It has DNR1 and DNR2. DNR1 is good but sometimes not quite enough. DNR2 really eliminates noise but has the waterfall artifacts which drive me crazy so I never use iy
It's still special that it doesn't have VHF/UHF but that the settings are in the radio.
That is because the same version of software is used on every Wolf not matter what features it has
And you can shoot video how to stitch the transceiver with card SD? Software installation by means of the micro CD ? Video ?

Yes, they have a port on the side for a Wi-Fi antenna. The other has an antenna inside the radio

Cant really post them on UA-cam, but if you join the Wolf group on Facebook and ask there I can do it
How do you set step size when tuning?
Under the TRX menu. Steps size for both encoders
I love my 100 watt Wolf, is there a ptt out for an amp, I cant find one....
The external port on the side should be able to drive the amp, but no documentation on what pin does what. I dont do more than the 100 watts so have not spend the time to test the pins. Hoping someone will figure it out
@@N4GW I checked the pins, nothing goes to ground on TX, one pin has 12 volts go away but hooking a relay coil to it disables the radio as long as its hooked up.
I used a seperate ptt off the microphone to key the amp which worked fine.

No video yet but it does have full EQ settings

Never used an Anan but they look close
It would be nice if you did a power output test. I behave like PA. Is it really 100W? And what is its power consumption? Please do this test.

on the adds for the wolf, it says uhf but the adds claim it won't transmit above 220, so not uhf. you own one. does it trasmit on 70cm?
The 20 watt version transmits there but I am only a HF guy so never used it. The RS-998 100 watt version only transmits on HF but supposedly can receive on VHF and UHF
@@N4GW i'm curious with these sdr tranceivers if you can control them with regular sdr software like sdr sharp or cubesdr. i other radios not like this one but have tiny screens, sometimes too small to be of much use. it would be great if you could control in monitor them with regular sdr software.
i know on some of them you can switch usb mode to be either standard usb or sdr,
I can run ft8 on a computer with one USB cable which generate a com port and sound card, so I assume other sdr control software would work as well
@@N4GW well i don't know about that particular one but on others, you get to be able to switch between cat and sdr mode. some of the screens (not the wolf ones ) butthe q900 and others, the screensare too smalland it water be handy. i've not seen any videos on sdr tranceivers talk about it, wellwiht the exception of sdr systems like hackrf one and others.
Hi mike On my RS998 after i did th call and testing on all the bands I'm getting very loud distorted audio out of the speaker even with de volume to minimum and the rf power at minimum and on a dummy load On the 10 meter band when y talk into the mike,connecting the headphones does not stop it , I trayed snap toroids and nothing s stop it .
Has any body have this problem ,i'm about to open the case and see what i can do but i'll wait for some expert opinions , thanks again for your grat videos 73s WB7JB Juan
That is a known issue. I have not known anything that fixes it on 10m. The supplied hand mic is bad for this. I changed to a Kenwood MC-60 mic and got an adapter off of eBay to attach it to the radio. The speaker hash is gone on all bands except on 10m and it is minimal on 10m.
Hi Mike what is the latest firmaré update available today some body said they stop doing them because of the dispute China/Rusia ?
Version 9.7 is out.
The firmware is out I have tried to down load 9.7 on OTA but it says there is no update available ,any other way to get the 9.7 firmware

They have changed things and the only way to get 9.7 is to download it on your computer and use DFU mode to install it
Please please please do a video on the UHF/VHF of the 20W version!!!!!! Nobody does it!!!!
I never use V/U and don’t even have an antenna for these bands. Sorry about that

@@pawelstankiewicz5284 I dont have a V/U antenna, but i put a dummy load on it and it transmitted on VHF and UHF on the 20w version The 100w RS-998 does not transmit on V/U
