What a start to the day! Always a treat to see you demo something we’ve spent so much time on. Because it starts with “he gets the pedal.” Then goes to “oh how cool, he’s finding the fun edges I knew were there but don’t think to mention.” And then finally, “oh my! He’s plugging in the ramper and I would never have thought to make these beautiful sounds in that way.”
Dan, I can’t put into words how much this means to me. I hope a humble thank you will suffice. You’ve turned a Digital Signal Processor into a Dream Sounds Provider. I’m head over heels in love with it and I have you and the rest of the OBNE team to thank for this. Thank you for creating this and thank you for the opportunity to play through it. I’m forever grateful ❤️
At around 9pm last night I almost reassured my wife that I had enough pedals. It’s 5am and I wake up to The Pedal Zone’s musical bliss, and realize how close I came to making a promise I couldn’t keep. It’s not even been 12 hours… Thank you Stefan for reminding me that I should never say those words, “Honey, I think I have all the pedals I want.”
Yes!!! I have the OBNE page open, was hovering over the "buy" button, and said to myself, "Self, before you buy this sucker, you better check if Stefan has a review." And what a review it is! Love the ability to combine and individually dial the delay, pitch, and crush. Love the new feature. Love the sounds you pull out of it!! That gritty shoegazery at 18:00 - amazing. Thank you!
Well, I was hoping so much that OBNE would make the Dark Star v3 in stereo. And wow, they did it, and I'm just blown away by the true stereo soud and the new features. 🌌🌠🖤💙 Congratulations Old Blood Noise, what a great job. 🙌👍👍👏👏 This sets a new standard for stereo ambient reverb pad pedals. 👌
It is not possible to think about this incredible release without remembering you Stefan. Sharing the joy with you, this pedal also inspired a special pedal, cannot imagine the stereo version…
@@thepedalzoneMy only question would be - and this is absolutely no slight on the Dark Star as it’s up against a beast here - is there anything it can do that the MercuryX can’t do?
Cool pedal, love having stereo and presets. Don’t think it will replace my V2, though. Love the ease of just switching modes and tweaking. Every demo I’ve heard of the V3 so far makes it sound like a super versatile shimmer reverb instead of the weird beast the V2 was.
Dang I thought I had the ultimate pedal when I got the dark light, can't wait for that darkest lighting with all these add-ons together it's going to be insane
So freaking cool! The dark star was one of my first pedals that inspired me to explore the infinite beyond! I love everything about it and am stoked to try this new iteration! Great video as always! :)
Aside from the large form factor, this is a perfect pedal! I have the V2 and will definitely be getting this one. It should be mentioned that the V3 has moved on from the FV-1 digital chip, so it should have even higher audio quality (on top of stereo and all the other features). This is a gamechanger for OBNE!
Hey Stefan, your original Dark Star video introduced me to my favorite pedal ever. It feels incredible to see a new version of it come out and hear what you do with it and enjoy it. I hope I can get my hands on one of these some day so I can try it out too. Keep up all the great videos!
Excellent demonstration of its capabilities, as always. The original Dark Star is legendary and this version offers much to get excited about. The 2 octave up/down instead of 1 is a nice touch. The expression controllable filter knob is the real game changer here though. I'm not looking to go back to a stereo rig, but if I were, this would be an absolute must. If reduced to only 2 pedals for the rest of my life, the original Dark Star run into the Earthquaker Dispatch Master would keep me supplied with ample ambient bliss. I'd love to hear this new Dark Star with the Expression Ramper sweeping the filter, like you showed, feeding into an Avalanche Run. That's gotta be the stuff dreams are made of.
The built-in saturation is so cool! Can go from subtle lo-fi grit to full blown-out shoegaze machine. It's so cool! They jammed so many cool new features in there but without making it overwhelming in any way. In my book they solved the upgraded Dark Star conundrum to perfection
Do I have to beg you to put an album out? Because I will. Dude, I’ll fly to wherever you are and it only beg you, but I’ll also give you a high five if you do it.
Good to see You again Stefan :D I have desire for Dark Star since 2021 when my pedalboard journey began. Especially when I saw what weird soundscapes it can create with EQD Transmisser ;) I was eyeing for it, but after I got myself more into synths world, practicality won over desire as monophonic pedals with stereo synths were too much of a downgrade for me. But now I think there are no more excuses XD Cheers !
"That pedal sounds interesting, wonder if there are any demos up yet" - "The Pedal Zone - 2 minutes ago". Cool, shall settle in and get the wallet ready.
Do you play in standard tuning? Your playing is the highlight of these videos man, I look forward to hearing what you cook up more than I do hearing the actual pedals (which are always great sounding, as well)
Honestly can’t remember the last time I played in standard tuning. Don’t even know if I would be able to navigate in standard anymore 😊 So no, I’m always in an open tuning of sorts. Recently I’ve been playing a lot in DADGAD, and this entire demo is exactly in that tuning. I’m deeply honored to hear you enjoy the playing. Means a lot ❤️
The world is messing with me. I went to the studio last night and my original Dark Star stopped working and when I got home I videos for the new stereo one. 🤨🤔🧐
Could someone please explain to me what the differences are between the versions of the original Dark Star pedals? Also, should I just get this one over the other Dark Star pedals? I'm going to buy one of these, I just want to make sure I'm making the best possible purchase for ambient music. They all seem like great options, however, I only need one.
V1 didn’t have expression and the Hold switch “only” let you sustain the reverb infinitely. V2 was upgraded with expression input, and an internal toggle switch was implemented to let you toggle between if Hold/Expression should affect Reverb Decay or CTRL1 (pitch-shift or pre-delay depending on mode selected), and I also believe the Reverb Mix pot got a slightly different taper to make the reverb a bit more present. V1 and V2 are built on the same chip (the FV-1 spin chip). The new Dark Star Stereo (which you’ve just watched a demo of 😊) is based on a completely different chipset (ARM processor) and is way more powerful both when it comes to sound quality and features. So if you can afford this version, then definitely get this one! It’s phenomenal!
Oh boy, i lalready have 2 Dark Star, but i think i want this one as well, haha. Question here: I like my Dark Star to be quite early in the chain... how do you make a stereo pedal work in that situation, if you want to add other mono modulations pedals after it?
Unfortunately all mono pedals will sum the input and defeat the stereo image. If you're running a stereo or W/DW rig (2 or 3 separate amps) you could do something unorthodox and run two separate mono chains from the DSv3 using a TRS Y-split cable and apply the mono effects across the different signal chains. Or you could go down in history as a legend by running an OBNE beam splitter first in the chain, run three mono chains out of it, split one of them into two using DSv3, giving you four total chains.
Great stuff (both the pedal and the playing in the demos, like always)! I have a question for you: I got the original Dark Star, with your videos being one of the deciding factors in convincing me it was what I wanted. I remember you recommending putting it early in your chain for integrating all the textural stuff into it, and I've done that myself. I'm curious how you think that advice applies to the new Dark Star? Because of the wide, enveloping stereo sound, this feel like a much more ambient reverb that belongs near the end of a chain to me-do you agree? Not that there are any right or wrong answers with pedal placement and it all depends on what you want to accomplish, etc., I know, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
Thanks for the kind words, man. Means a lot. And I'm honored to hear that my original Dark Star demo played a part in you picking one up. Yeah, I liked the original one early in the chain, due to its transformative powers, plus it sounded great into dirt. The new Dark Star Stereo has in-built overdrive, so you can easily get those dirty ambient tones without placing it early in the chain like the old one. That said, I would probably place it early in the chain in relation to where it begins to split into stereo for me. So I would probably place it before my more normal stereo reverb. I haven't put it on my board yet, but will probably place it in between my stereo delay and stereo reverb, but let's see where inspiration and exploration takes me :)
@@thepedalzone awesome, thanks for the thoughtful response! And yes, let's see-I'd love it if you eventually did a follow-up video like you did with the original Dark Star, after you get to know it more and discover more things to do with it!
Will the sound be in stereo if you run a TRS cable out to single input on an audio interface or do you need to use a TRS breakout into left & right TS cables into 2 inputs? I’m not familiar with these stereo I/O with only 1 in and out.

Yes, normal TS cables work. But if you want to use it in stereo, then you’ll at least need one TRS adapter/breakout cable. You can set it up for mono in and stereo out. That’s what I’m doing throughout this demo.
Regular TS cables will work for mono. If you want to run this in stereo it needs a TRS to TRS out into the next stereo pedal in the chain (if it has a stereo TRS input) or TRS Y-split cable if it has Left/Right stereo inputs.
@@spacefish4471just a guess but typically 128 as MIDI uses 7 bits for the Patch Change message PC. Boss uses bank change as well to have a higher number of patches.
