  • Telegraph Creek has been on the list for several years now, but the drive in is just not something I wanted to tackle in the motorhome. The road is 112 km of well maintained gravel, but there are sections that are very steep, narrow and windy. Road conditions aside, this is an unbelievably beautiful route. BC has a lot of spectacular drives, but this may be in the top three for me. I absolutely love a road with a little challenge and a little danger, but the diversity of this drive is something I could never have planned for.
Honestly, I would do this trip again just for the drive its self, but the town at the end is the icing on the cake. Telegraph Creek is a strange ghost town, because just above it is the First Nation Village, also known as Telegraph Creek. Because of the close proximity to the village, the ghost town has been somewhat concealed from discovery, and although it has seen vandalism, it is substantially less than other abandoned locations. Most of the town is occupied by nothing more than pack rats and chipmunks, but a couple of the buildings are privately owned and in decent condition. The Stikine River Song has an operational kitchen and rooms for rent, the Museum is open during the summer, and accepts donations for a tour, but the rest of town is slowly becoming reclaimed by nature.
One of my favourite characteristics of this town are the old rock walls. It is rare to see much masonry work in Canada, especially in one of the old boom bust towns, but all through Telegraph Creek are rock walls and staircases, overgrown with foliage, but otherwise exactly as they had been 100 years prior. It is a shame to see this town rotting away, because it is situated in such a beautiful place. Never the less, I am so happy I got a chance to visit and see it while it is standing, and to learn its history from the locals.

Hey Dustin, love that you got to explore Telegraph Creek, it's a beautiful area, the whole Stikine River valley is a spectacular place, mostly untouched by industry, and our Tahltan peoples are trying our hardest to keep it that way. Those horses are domesticated, owned by horse ranch in the area, they usually set their horses to roam over the fall and winter, then collect them in the spring/summer. That cliff that you filmed at the village of Tahltan, is called Eagle Rock, because the way the cliff eroded, looks like eagles wings cut into the cliff, its a sacred spot for our peoples. Its an amazing place, i haven't been to Telegraph in years.

This is the second video from this channel I've watched. It's quickly become readily apparent that we're not dealing with just another amateur UA-camr here. This is professional work. It's like what we used to see on CHEK TV Saturday mornings or the Outdoor Life Network pre-UA-cam, and even pre-internet. The main difference was that the host wouldn't carry a camera and do his own filming. He/she would have a film and sound crew with them.
We used to call those big propane bottles, "pigs". I'm not sure why. 😆

We almost bought a place there too. It's a beautiful drive with a very interesting history. You did miss the eagle in Eagle Rock, though. You traced the shape of it's wings when you were at the confluence of the Stikine and the Tahltan rivers. We used to follow the road to it's end and picnic. As a first generation Canadian (both parents born in Italy) I was brought up as Canadian first with Italian heritage and I have been to Italy numerous times. The Italians do a good job of keeping their heritage and history always preserved and hopefully these videos will make Canadians understand that we are losing much of what makes us Canadians. As dumb as it sounds I actual shed tears when I see these historic towns in such disarray, it is our history! Don't get me wrong hopefully there are millions of other Canadians that feel the same way ; we need to preserve what we have a nation to show future generations that we are a great nation of determined people. I'm glad you finally made it into Telegraph Creek. You couldn't have picked a better time of year. Fall time is beyond gorgeous. The old house you were looking at that you were told (likely by Mickey) was recently purchase with an idea of fixing it up is ours. We were recently able to buy it back into the family. My wife's grandmother grew up in that house. The staircase was actually accessed from the kitchen addition that was built of lumber and attached to the front of the house. Like the kitchen, the upstairs was also an upgrade. The house originally had no upstairs. We removed the old kitchen because it had collapsed. We are presently trying to get the lot graded in front of the house so we can put a trailer on the lot to give us a base to work on the old place from. LDM, during the repairs when the creek flooded and washed the roads out piled debris and excess material on our lot, burying the driveway and making what was a level lot inaccessible. In this country it takes a while to hire a machine to do the work. We may have to rent a machine ourselves (we now live in Dease Lake). But we do want to restore the old house. It has been an iconic and highly recognizable welcome to the old downtown for many visitors for years. It is a shame it was left to go like that, but nothing is beyond repair - it just needs a lot more work (and money) to bring it back. :) Thank you for doing such a great job of showcasing Telegraph Creek. I hope more people will take an interest and less people will keep chucking rocks through the windows.

Another awesome video Dustin.. I have been up to Dease & Watson Lake, I dont ever recall going down into Telegraph
36:50 it's not always humans that break windows, sometimes birds fly into old glass, and break the glass.. When I was a kid growing up in Nanaimo, the pigeons use to fly into the glass to break it, so they could get inside old buildings to make nests.
and also as windows age, they become weaker and break. Windows have to face intense elements day in and day out, so it's clear why glass gets thin and then crack.

Stunning I repeat under my breath. Your ability to mete out the dangerous from the negotiable is outstanding. I'm afraid I'd be my typical nosy self and be sitting in a hospital bed if the Good Lord favored me enough to not break my neck. Cheers ol sport from the flatlands of Alberta. M

Beautiful work! Gorgeous place. I will never understand why so many amazing old buildings and homes get abandoned. Yesteryear detailed wood and metal work is falling apart in CA & US. It’s sad to let it fall. The view, the cliffs, the water there are like heaven on earth!

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL AREA. I TRULY HOPE THE REMAINDER OF THE PROPERTIES WILL BE PURCHASED AND RESTORED. YOU COULD JUST IMAGINE GOING TO A BEAUTIFUL PLACE AND SEEING ALL THE BUILDINGS REMODELED AND FAMILIES ENJOYING THEIR SUMMER OR ANY TIME OF YEAR IN THIS INCREDIBLE AREA. THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT GOING TO A PLACE WHERE THE PREVIOUS LIVES LIVED THERE WERE SLOW AND PEACEFUL AND EVERYONE KNEW EVERYONE ELSE, WHERE A NEIGHBOR WAS MORE THAN THE OCCUPANT OF A BUILDING.

26:10 It looks like there may have been more building, allowing one to access the stairs to the upper floor from inside. The bank may have collapsed that portion, which was too far gone to save. The stairs may have been added when the lean-to was built. Prior to that, they may have had a steep ladder/stairs. Purely speculation.
I had an 1890 farmhouse that was built in two sections. I think they built what became the kitchen to live in while they built the rest. There were clues under the house, door treads between sections, and chimney placement. There was almost no clearance under the kitchen, and the newer part was dug out. Fun times replacing plumbing.

Hi Dustin, that printer at 32.49 is actually a memeogragh machine. Back in the 70s I would type test questions for the the😅 kids that were younger than me. You would type on white background and there was a purple underneath. You would fasten the ends of the paper to the to the machine and use the handle to make as many as you need. They ended up as purple on white paper.

That combination of history from locals with beautiful cinematic footage and your own personal adventure is so riveting. I want to go there now. Your truck is perfect for those roads, when I was an owner operator all the class 1 guys wondered how my dodge dually could possibly tow so much, safely, in the winter. It was because I didn't even need to touch the brakes on the descents, so if I needed to stop in the middle of a descent I had 10 sets of perfectly cool brakes just waiting.

All your videos are great but this one is definitely an award winning piece of cinematography! Telegraph creek needs to be restored and preserved for future generations. If they could entice other like minded people who could move there to work and live that would be the ideal situation. I follow the ghost town living channel too, amazing work being done to help save and preserve their heritage.
