      now if that be me doing this kind of thing, jack it up as far as, that front oleo has some travel on it, clear the decks completely out the way, if things go south, you need somewhere to run like a headless chicken, get that chassis lined up, shuv it under as far as it will go up close to the nose gear, and then remove the gear, if things go south, then at least the fuselage can only go as far as the chassis and not on your head
      i've been in a position working beneath an unsafe fuselage where something like this could have gone wrong due to someone else's stupidity, i took photographs, showed the boss, who ignored them, never told the offending person off, he still works there, and i have moved on since, can anyone explain that to me?

    I think the reverse bow in the metal super structure is there for a reason. Once all the weight of the cabin is put on top, it levels off on its own and subsequently doesn’t bow the wrong direction which could create problems.

    Too late now, but... that bow in the frame is intentional. I recently left a large trailer manufacturing company. We designed that IN!
    Idea being that the weight would be placed mid-ship between the axles, and then it flattens out.

    Jimmy, not telling you how to do it but I would have cut a chanel in the fuselage and set it down as low as you could get it. It's going to be way top heavy the way you're doing it plus you're going to have clearance issues when traveling with it.

    Is the curve engineered into the frame, is it bowed because there is no longer a load on the frame ? As an example you see empty trailers with upward bows, that are level when loaded. What will leveling the frame prior to reintroducing a load onto the frame. I'm obviously not a engineer, just a observation.

    You'll need to remove 12 to 18 inches from the bottom of the fuselage. This will widen your attach points. The pressure tube will need to be cut into so the chassis can move forward, putting the front tire just in front of the airstair. Then the over-all unit will be less top-heavy. The DC-3 'conversions' I've seen had the bottom of the fuselage removed to give better attach points and roadability. That way you can clear many bridges/over-passes. Just my $.02 worth 🙂

    Those welds are not too bad considering... they will hold as long as you didn't make the metal brittle next to them. You are actually lucky the on chassis generator isn't working, most ground to the chassis, having the generator grounded to what you are welding can cause issues. I would not grind down the welds, ugly strong welds are better than pretty ground down welds.
    There are things I would do differently (the x brace I would of put in first so I could weld it into the existing c channel, and then plate it, it is always stronger to weld to the original vs stacking on bracings onto bracings.
    Cut resistant gloves :)

  • @hoov100
    @hoov100 5 місяців тому +1

    It would be a PITA but notching the body to sit inside the frame rails of the motorhome chassis would help with your height problem. You're going to want to build an air box around the engine anyway and dropping the fuselage a foot and a half would help out. The other thing you could look at is putting the fuselage on airbags between the body and frame.

    Probably too late in the game now, but any time you have something up in the air like that you should use cribbing to support it. The nice thing is, you can leave it in place and add or remove one level at a time when raising and lowering it. That way if something goes wrong it will only fall the distance of one level of your cribbing.
    Glad it worked out.

    hi, love the channel been watching for years. I was a vehicle and chassis fabricator for many years working on refuse, recycling and commercial vehicles, looking at the chassis and the shape of the fuselage I would suggest that a type of cradle to carry the fuselage mounted on the side of the chassis frame with a cross member in between the rails, this would allow the whole thing to be mounted a lot lower improving the entry and more than probably the handling of the finished project. These are just my ideas and I hope they may be of use. CLEAR PROP. Dave in the UK.

    • @lesterawilson3
      @lesterawilson3 6 місяців тому

      @@avflyguy CG is definitely a concern here. RV's are built as light as possible above the frame. That can be somewhat mitigated by adding ballast in the space between the bottom of the fuselage and cabin floor and/or in the space between the frame rails (which was done to some extent in this video by beefing up the chassis). But ballast comes at the expense of fuel economy and braking distance. Brakes should definitely be redone and beefed up as part of the road-worthiness process. But nonetheless this is a VERY cool project!

    Can't believe that Jimmy didn't shift some finances around and didn't put the $30,000,000 into restoring the jet back into mint condition. For shame.
    In all seriousness, I'm not even a big Elvis fan but its always cool when you dedicate care and effort to anything old like this. Even if you know nothing about planes, those of the mechanical persuasion have tons to appreciate about Jimmy's videos.

      Jimmy my late uncle Eddie went through basic training in the Army and stationed in Germany. I used to visit my grandparents house after high school and remember my aunt's all fawning over the man that I met that said "Just Call Me Elvis" when he visited my uncle. Seems he bought Eddie a full dressed Harley that scared him so he took him out and bought him a new Cadillac instead. I almost got flown out to Southern California on the jet as he also was friends with my second cousin Nick Adams

    Id strongly recommend doing what you can to get the plane as low as possible. Id want the belly of the jet cradled by the frame rails or even inset the frame rails into the belly a bit. It will look better and drive better. Not sure exactly what all that stuff at the front of the RV frame is, It looks like mostly a genset? Id take all that off the frame and ditch it or relocate it. Then all you really need to do is clearance where the engine is at the back which looks easy. If it were my project Id cut the whole belly of the jet off, set the truck frame basically just under the cabin floor(with some structural reinforcement obviously). Then make fairing panels out of the cut off belly that bolt to the side of the truck frame hiding the truck frame entirely. This would make it actually look like your drawing.

    The first rule in “wild projects”, have “friends” that weld, do hvac, are A&P w IA, all necessary in Jimmys world.

    In the seventies and eighties I flew into ABQ and ROW a lot and saw Elvis’s plane sitting there in ROW. There was also a great NASA JetStar sitting in ABQ with a wonderful back wall on the interior that displayed a Mercury Space Capsule on Re-entry. Wonder what happened to it.

    Are you going to use the nose gear mount as the front attachment point? Needs a round bar the same diameter to fit into the side clamps. Then weld on a piece to go forward to mount in place of the arm you cut in two. Then down above the motorhome frame put a cross bar with rubber mounts between it and the frame. It should work since the nose gear mount is already built to support the plane.

    Start looking great, like we will say it's getting there, I only will suggest to paint the chassis while it's all open before putting it under and do touch ups after except doing all fitment and then removing it again. Great job.

    Choices choices. In Europe - every custom-built vehicle goes through an extensive government road-safety check. Unqualified welder/welding on structural chassis members - no permit to use on the road. It's difficult to check weld integrity after welding, so WQP's (Weld Qual Proc's) are made using visual, NDT and destructive testing.

    If you have the wings, they should definately be added, it will add to stabillity and altitude and with the extra height the chassis gives they'll pass over almost all the traffic.

    Good progress Jimmy. Very cool to see the chassis under the jet body. You'll be driving around the country before you know it. Liked the 310/car as well.
