as far as canon goes, you have to take each metal gear game as sort of its' own thing. Like you said, there is no "Snake, I am your father" moment in MG2, despite Campbell and Snake mentioning it in MGS. There's also a strong argument that MGS2 was mostly or entirely a VR simulation, and at the very least it's supposed to be unclear what's real and what isn't, but that interpretation doesn't gel at all with MGS4. MGSV basically doesn't fit with any of the other games even remotely. That's why I always tell people to avoid playing the games in chronological order, go with release order instead. It's not a long story that forms some grand epic, it's a series of one-off stories that are thematically and narratively connected, but don't have a strict continuity. Each new entry ignores or follows up on whatever plot threads were useful for the story they wanted to tell, but they're never married to a concept or plot point. I also don't think Kojima deserves so much credit for the games he's worked on. He does a lot, but he's not a level designer, or a programmer, or even the only writer! There's plenty of behind the scenes story that demonstrate the rest of the team having plenty of say in what they were making. Oh and while he went to film school briefly, Kojima was ultimately trying to be a novelist, not a filmmaker.

It revealed to everyone how the M1911 is the greatest handgun since the Colt SAA. First of all, the feeding ramp is polished to a mirror sheen. It’s not going to have any feeding problems. I was a bowie fan ten years before i ever played my first metal gear game. I know people dislike mgsv but the bowie connection and the story of loss really connected after my first major breakup at 21, man i love that game. I love bowie. I love venom, i miss quiet, i pet d-dog. Thats my life. After going back and playing all of the originals (except for metal gear nes and mgs4) this franchise will forever be in my thoughts.
Correction Metal Gear REX is not a stealth Weapon but a Mobile Nuclear Armed Bipedal Tank it is the untraceable nuclear warheads it fires that are Stealth they are fired from its massive Rail Gun/cannon removing the need for rocket fuel making the warheads untraceable, The warheads are also fired at speeds several times faster than conventional rockets by the time the target realizes whats happening they are already dead and nobody would Know who fired it or where it was fired from(secret weapon stays secret). This is what make MG-REX so terrifying its a massive game changer.
Much like Hidetaka Miyazaki, Kojima made a franchise and started a genre that will never be forgotten. They also both found a way to make their fetishes important to the game. Absolute legends.
Funny enough, I can, and it loops straight back to the statement: Otacon was originally fat, but then when there was a concept of a slimmer Otacon, Kojima thought it reminded of him and his obsession with anime. The rest is history.
@@donnycorn3086 I mean, I respect that Kojima didn't go the route of making Otacon any kind of action-oriented sidekick beyond his tech skills. I actually like the fact that Otacon, despite obviously being a genius in weapons-making and programming, was still portrayed as being out of his depth against badass super-soldiers. He still helps out with hacking information and opening machine-based mechanisms, but the actual fighting is still done by Snake. Which, oddly for this series, makes (mostly) realistic sense.
@@mrreyes5004 I meant that the original design was supposed to be a stereotypical depiction of an Otaku tho. But that was a great insight in Otacon's character.
I remember when people pointed out the fact that under Kojima, writers and editors had to basically work overtime to fix the mess he writes and Konami did everything it could to get rid of any proof of those statements from the writers and editors.
@@reptiliannoizezz.413yeah there is a pretty infamous interview with the guy who did the English translation where he talks about how he had to change nearly everything to make it sound more natural and kojima got mad because he wanted it translated with zero changes even though it made it sound incredibly awkward. In general kojima is mediocre to terrible when given complete creative freedom and created his best work when he has people who can veto some of his decisions. Pretty similar to the George Lucas situation with the originals vs the prequels. People inherently like to credit individuals with creating art but in general for projects like this it’s important to remember it is collaborative and that the director isn’t solely responsible for any of it succeeding
@@reptiliannoizezz.413 Kojima was not the sole writer behind the games, that is the cult that has been created by others. Below is a list of the writers for 1-5. In fact for 1-3 you can see the name Tomokazu Fukushima, and it has been argued that he coalesced Kojima's neboulous ideas into a cohesive story. That is why after 3, when he left, we had 4 and 5, which despite having memorable stories, still fall flat in execution compared to 1-3. That is also just a theory so far. Genuinely the most anticipated UA-cam video I have ever thought of, I cannot express my excitement through simple text, but I shall leave a goose approved rating, 10/10 I shed a tear, literal peak of video essays
I know you mentioned that the first two Metal Gear games were largely retconned, but they’re still mostly canon. Many of the characters that you mentioned “Snake seems to already know” were pretty major characters in those two games. Gray Fox especially was in both and even one of the final bosses in MG2. Master Miller and Campbell were also main radio contacts in MG2.
It's honestly kind of weird to imagine the first two Metal Gear being retconned considering that MGS3 is meant to parallel Big Boss' rookie days with Solid Snake's journey in the first two Metal Gear title. A highly-skilled yet naive rookie sent into a jungle, being tested against special forces warriors, finding out their mentor is a traitor, etc.
I’m deeply saddened to see that this isn’t your most viewed video. Maybe it’s just because this video game is that incredible, but this has been one of the funniest and most engaging videos I’ve ever watched. I’ve been a fan for a long time but man, I just have to applaud this incredible work
This video came at the perfect time. Metal gear has very recently become one of my favorite game franchises and just finishing the master collection, this is hype
Well to be fair Holly White is just Meryl before Meryl and snake left her behind in MG2 And also Meryl had to be left behind because kojima had no idea which ending to make canon
With the amount of times he's brought it up, I'm surprised it took Dumbsvile this long to make a full blown metal gear video, either way I'm glad he's gotten to it .
Hey, just rewatching this now for the second time and its really a great video, i actually do love when you talk about games and movies you love as much as the ones you hate or just find goofy. Mgs means a lot to me too and its great that you're bringing it to light for more people. One little note tho, one of my favorite aspects of mgs1 is how the game just carries on even if you fail the torture (you can submit to it, which i did in my first play bc i didnt know you could survive it) and honestly, i think this "bad" ending reinforces the message that encourages you to keep living, not that i feel good or didnt care about failing Meryl like that, but for such an old game its interesting how it doesnt hold that against you (too) much, you're *allowed and encouraged* to keep living and carry on. I dont think i ever felt more impacted by a game before that... A really great video btw! Feels nice to revisit this story after so long.
I honestly liked the accents in the original MGS1 radio crew. Helps it stand out more, and it feels more realistic. You're gonna gave all these different specialists, they probably have different backgrounds.
I do think it's worth noting that, though the MSX games may have been retconned to an extent, some version of the events depicted in those games still happen in the metal gear timeline. Spoilers for the MSX games Gray Fox isn't just "a man snake has fought with in war," he was a highly decorated soldier, with his codename even being the highest honor obtainable in the foxhound unit. In the events of Metal Gear 1, Snake rescues gray Fox after a failed attempt at infiltrating outer heaven, and over the course of metal gear 2, he acts as basically a double agent, very similar to his actions in MGS 1, in fact, at this point working for big boss because he's felt his place was only ever on the battle field, and following big boss more or less assures gray fox that he'll always be on one, despite him not being completely on board with big boss's ideals. Eventually, Snake and Fox confront one another and fight, Snake mortally wounding gray Fox in the process, where he confesses to being Snake's "number one fan" (the MG2 equivalent of "deepthroat" here). This leads into his revival through the use of an exoskeleton and the rest is history. And it doesn't end with gray Fox either, master Miller was also snake's combat advisor in metal gear 2, making the ultimate revelation that he was killed and swapped out with liquid snake all the more shocking to those who have played the prior titles. All this to say that the MSX games, even if they're older, more tame, and don't quite have the same rich themes of MGS 1 onwards, they are still worth experiencing and are essential parts of the full narrative of metal gear. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, absolutely wonderful video.
I've been a (kinda) long time viewer of your channel and I love your vids a ton. As of recently I just finished playing Mgs 1,2, 3 and am currently playing 5 so its really awesome to see that you're covering the series now. great vid man, can't wait to see what videos you got cookin up next. Btw the MGS edit/beat that was at the beginning of the video was FIRE (More metal gear vids PLEASE)
NGL, all the times you used MGS clips on unrelated videos I always got curious, however I didn't know where to start. I'm soooo glad this video exist now thank you Dumbsville uwu
This is honestly a well done video all things considered, I really like how you go into the themes and characters instead of just explaining the plot of the story beat by beat, though I kinda wished you talked a little about the alternate Meryl dies ending. Overall I'd say this is a very well done review and I can't wait to hear about you're thoughts on MGS2.
Honestly, if it weren't for Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear Solid, I might not even be a gamer today. I was pretty much burned out on gaming by the time the PS1 came out, then I saw the MGS1 demo at a friend's house and was completely blown away by it. Sold my Super Nintendo collection on eBay and used that money plus some I had saved to buy a PS1 bundle at Sam's Club that came with a memory card, a second Dualshock, Spyro the Dragon, and Jet Moto 2, and also picked up copies of Metal Gear Solid and Duke Nukem: Time to Kill. I can't tell you how many times I played through MGS1 by the time 2 came out. I still do annual playthroughs of 1 - 4.
Man, just stumbled on your channel in my recommendations yesterday (with your Sons of Liberty Video). Absolutely love this style of editing. Really really good job. Very much happily a new subscriber!
I dunno if somebody else already mentioned it, but after the Sniper Wolf fight if you look at the sky you can see a parachute landing which is probably Liquid escaping the hind D that Snake blew up before. Just another detail that makes this game even better.
The best part about this is that there is no ejection method from the cockpit in a Hind D as if you did, you would immediately be torn apart by the propellors above you. So Liquid putting a parachute by the wreckage is there just to spite Snake & piss him off, cause he would know it would be impossible to have done that. Liquid is a master troll throughout the game.
@@chandlerburse You don't. That's the whole point. He would've crashed inside the chopper & got out and put up a parachute just to spite & mock Snake by rubbing it in his face. If you look at the wreckage after the Wolf fight, there's a codec call with Campbell where they go over it.
My only regret making the codec sound my text message notification sound, is that I must check my phone like 50 times before my brain acceptS that I was watching a UA-cam doc. So of course while watching this, I missed the real texts from my supervisor asking why I didn't make our team zoom meeting. Deepthroat was named after the snitch in the Watergate case.
22:04 Deep Throat was the alias of the Watergate whistle blower. 35:29 You could use a Stun Grenade. Much more humane. 54:25 Stealth weapon in the sense that it fires nuclear missiles without fuel, using a rail gun, making them undetectable. It also circumvents international treaties because it's "missiles" aren't technically missiles since they have no fuel. Great review. The meme filled editing is personally not my cup of tea but still was very insightful. Especially to someone who perhaps never touched a Metal Gear game. Just have a couple nitpicks. There is quite a bit of backtracking, which is rather standard design for the 90s. While I do agree that the backtracking for the PAL card was rather annoying, I feel that the one for the PSG1 is actually great design. It adds to the urgency of the situation because you have Meryl bleeding to death and you can't do anything without a sniper rifle. Finally, the Alert sequence in the Communication Tower I feel is an interesting break in the typical gameplay loop that just envolves avoiding combat and here it forces you to be on the offensive. MGS is probably my favourite game in the series after MGS2 and I still boot up my PS1 from time to time just to play it.
Liquid goes on about having the recessive genes. Having been told he was trash since he was born. Yet he: survives a helicopter explosion unscathed, survives getting rockets to the damn face in metal gear Rex, survives a 50 foot drop off a burning robot and comes out relatively unharmed and still chases after Snake and Meryl driving one handed with a machine gun and still survives that head on car collision after taking several bullets. Absolute monster
You literally posted this at the most perfect time. I just bought the master collection this week and I’m almost finished with MGS1; I’ve only ever played MGSV and Revengance so I’m honestly surprised how well this game has aged, can’t wait to finish it tonight

It bothers me how nobody seems to know that “Deapthroat” is a reference to the informant in the Watergate scandal. Maybe it’s just an American thing though
Honestly I love the meta ludology of the game It sucks to backtrack It also sucks to leave your partner behind instead of taking the sniper bait You feel what snake feels It sucks to have to button mash It sucks to be tortured It’s nice to have something vibrate on your arm So it happens to you and snake You feel what snake feels
Good Shit Dumbsy, this is exactly the kind of message I needed "don't let your heretige define who you are as a person ,live life on your own terms" Thanks Dumbsy and thanks Hideo you profoundly weird man❤
It's so odd to think that there was a time when action games _weren't_ expected to have some kind of deep story. But Metal Gear Solid's frequent fourth-wall breaks, on top of being comedic, also ironically do strengthen the idea that the real-life player is involved in the story just as much as Snake, Otacon and Meryl. When Liquid calls out Solid for enjoying the thrill of killing, he's ALSO calling out the player for taking pleasure in killing enemies (even if simulated ones). It's the kind of deep deconstruction that really wouldn't be followed up until Far Cry 3 and Hotline Miami.
Brother. I’m a huge MGS fan. I’ve played every game and I watch UA-cam videos constantly. Like it’s great to play this and go about my day doing chores or whatever. For someone who’s heard this story easily 100 times. I was crying and laughing at the way you edit and spoke about this.😂😂😂. Great work.
Absolute peak I'm excited to see the other videos about the rest of the franchise I never was interested in Metal Gear before but after your references to it and now this video I might give it a try after all.
This video felt like a long time coming and especially now Metal Gear is more relevant than ever so thank you Dumbsy for finally making your passion project
Great video. MGS was the game that connected me and my brother for a long time. It was the game that turned us into gamers and we have a lot of memories from this.
22:02 I know you could have intentionally missed this for memes but, deepthroat was a code name for an informant from water gate scandal. (snake references this on this very cutscene)
Nice vid Dumbsy. I was first introduced to the Metal Gear Solid series through the 3DS port of MGS 3, and got hooked. The story was great with many tropes involved with film, such as the Bond franchise. While I was more familiar with the stealth games such as the Splinter Cell games, MGS was clearly the better experience for me personally. Possibly my favourite franchise from Konami.

Perfect timing I’m knee deep in my MGS run currently on TPP and loving it
Slap train what are you doing here, I thought you only made bad racing game content

Oh yeah, I’ve been waiting for this one
I guess you could say, he kept you waiting huh?
Correction Metal Gear REX is not a stealth Weapon but a Mobile Nuclear Armed Bipedal Tank it is the untraceable nuclear warheads it fires that are Stealth they are fired from its massive Rail Gun/cannon removing the need for rocket fuel making the warheads untraceable, The warheads are also fired at speeds several times faster than conventional rockets by the time the target realizes whats happening they are already dead and nobody would Know who fired it or where it was fired from(secret weapon stays secret). This is what make MG-REX so terrifying its a massive game changer.
Long essay counter point they say ot in the game 🗿
Much like Hidetaka Miyazaki, Kojima made a franchise and started a genre that will never be forgotten. They also both found a way to make their fetishes important to the game. Absolute legends.
I personally see him more like Hayao Miyazaki, both are great and beloved artists that I personally don’t really care for.
“Hal is Kojima’s self insert, no I will not elaborate”
*No elaboration necessary*
Funny enough, I can, and it loops straight back to the statement:
Otacon was originally fat, but then when there was a concept of a slimmer Otacon, Kojima thought it reminded of him and his obsession with anime.
Damn, fr?
In whatever sparse information we've got, he joined the MGS team in the last minute and was responsible for non-optional Codec calls, and some details. Regardless, Kojima needs a editors to keep him in check.

one of my favorite parts of the torture scene is after all that strain to resist you get a call and the break the fourth wall to have you put the controller on your sore forearm and it vibrates to massage it
Genuinely the most anticipated UA-cam video I have ever thought of, I cannot express my excitement through simple text, but I shall leave a goose approved rating, 10/10 I shed a tear, literal peak of video essays
This is DEFINITELY going on my downloaded playlist!
AN HOUR LONG DUMBSVILLE VIDEO?! My autism has been satisfied for the month.
This video (and the editing) are as good and insane as expected
I had to turn it off after 15 minutes because it was loud, annoying, and obnoxious. The editing is way too fast-paced and unfocused.

Same, ended up getting 4 on my ps3 after I beat the collection
I wanna get 4 soooooooo bad but it’d probably be cheaper to see if it’ll be on the next collection rather than getting a ps3
@@mustardsauce1418 piracy is the cheapest way 🤷♂️ (I definitely didn't jailbreak my ps3 for metal gear)
I love how Kojima sets up snake and meryl together just to not mention her at all until mgs4
Well to be fair Holly White is just Meryl before Meryl and snake left her behind in MG2
And also Meryl had to be left behind because kojima had no idea which ending to make canon
This video got my Sanke Solid . One of the videos of all time

Damn right! Mei Ling and Naomi will always be the MGS1 versions to me. Their replaced accents in Twin Snakes and 4 were flat.
AT LAST
The Kojima video of all time
I do think it's worth noting that, though the MSX games may have been retconned to an extent, some version of the events depicted in those games still happen in the metal gear timeline.
Spoilers for the MSX games
Gray Fox isn't just "a man snake has fought with in war," he was a highly decorated soldier, with his codename even being the highest honor obtainable in the foxhound unit.
Have you played the MSX Metal Gear games?
Wait, why did you skip 4?
@@klickonthat5244maybe he doesn't have a ps3
NGL, all the times you used MGS clips on unrelated videos I always got curious, however I didn't know where to start. I'm soooo glad this video exist now thank you Dumbsville uwu
This is honestly a well done video all things considered, I really like how you go into the themes and characters instead of just explaining the plot of the story beat by beat, though I kinda wished you talked a little about the alternate Meryl dies ending. Overall I'd say this is a very well done review and I can't wait to hear about you're thoughts on MGS2.
this video was hard to watch, cause i got codec sound effects as my phone notification and ringtones.
Oh man i love nonmetal spring liquid
Man i remember playing wood rope gas
I dunno if somebody else already mentioned it, but after the Sniper Wolf fight if you look at the sky you can see a parachute landing which is probably Liquid escaping the hind D that Snake blew up before. Just another detail that makes this game even better.
The best part about this is that there is no ejection method from the cockpit in a Hind D as if you did, you would immediately be torn apart by the propellors above you. So Liquid putting a parachute by the wreckage is there just to spite Snake & piss him off, cause he would know it would be impossible to have done that. Liquid is a master troll throughout the game.
@@TheBigShotTMD I did not know that. Makes it even better lol.
@@TheBigShotTMDhow is a pilot suppose to escape safely in a chopper like that anyways?
@@chandlerburse You don't. That's the whole point. He would've crashed inside the chopper & got out and put up a parachute just to spite & mock Snake by rubbing it in his face. If you look at the wreckage after the Wolf fight, there's a codec call with Campbell where they go over it.
@@TheBigShotTMD no i mean is there is no safety installed in that kind of chopper in real life?
I just finished the metal gear collection, so this is the perfect video for me.
We need an extended version of that 35:35
14:55 love the Hickok45 reference ❤🤍💙
My only regret making the codec sound my text message notification sound, is that I must check my phone like 50 times before my brain acceptS that I was watching a UA-cam doc. So of course while watching this, I missed the real texts from my supervisor asking why I didn't make our team zoom meeting.
Deepthroat was named after the snitch in the Watergate case.
What a thrill.
With darkness and silence through the night
What a thrill…
I'm searching, and I'll melt into you...
Came here after the MGS2 video and barely halfway through before I subbed. Love the humour and editing in these videos! 😂
I really enjoy the way you trashtalk stuff, but it's these personal videos about stuff you enjoy like this one or Klonoa that i like the most.
It's nice to see a positive review every once in a while 👍

Maybe it’s just an American thing though
The editing is SO good. haha! I loved the video, thanku for making this
Honestly I love the meta ludology of the game
It sucks to backtrack
It also sucks to leave your partner behind instead of taking the sniper bait

It sucks to have to button mash
It sucks to be tortured
It’s nice to have something vibrate on your arm
So it happens to you and snake

Good Shit Dumbsy, this is exactly the kind of message I needed "don't let your heretige define who you are as a person ,live life on your own terms" Thanks Dumbsy and thanks Hideo you profoundly weird man❤
Opening intro is fantastic!
Great work.

im so glad this was made in the perfect time to have Solid and Raiden doing the silly fortnite dances
22:02 I know you could have intentionally missed this for memes but, deepthroat was a code name for an informant from water gate scandal. (snake references this on this very cutscene)
This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for
7:35 revolver ocelot took me out lmaooo
Nice vid Dumbsy. I was first introduced to the Metal Gear Solid series through the 3DS port of MGS 3, and got hooked. The story was great with many tropes involved with film, such as the Bond franchise. While I was more familiar with the stealth games such as the Splinter Cell games, MGS was clearly the better experience for me personally. Possibly my favourite franchise from Konami.
