Zee 8 seems amazing. It is very much what I expected it to be but the price of everything is getting to the point where I can’t switch systems so it’s all academic. I wonder how Nikon’s competitors will respond to this “nothing left on the table“ offering… As usual, you guys crushed it.

I agree. That is the most important remaining camera for Nikon to release this year. The Z7III, meanwhile, might have been taken off the drawing board.
The new camera which would be cool would be a Z70, operationally closer to the Z6 than Z5, and including IBIS.

Z6iii and Z90(flagship DX) are next most anticipated cameras. Currently having great experience with my Z5 , but will decide to upgrade to Z6iii in the future or just add Z90 to my inventory. Very optimistic about these releases. Z7 line is mostly doomed , I think Nikon did acknowledge the risk of introducing Z8 , because basically you can just bye Z8 with 1k$ more and get so much more.

I wonder if you can get a deeper buffer shooting small or medium JPGs to the SD card? I understand that some will want full redundancy, but for others a low-res emergency option is all they need. Then you would have options: full NEF redundancy with huge buffer would be Z9 only; but with the Z8 you might choose between 1000 shot NEF buffer (no backup); shorter bursts with redundancy; or longer bursts with JPG. It's quite exciting that 99% of what the Z9 is, is now available at this price point and this size and weight. I'm sure that it will sell very well. I'm on a D750, which is still a little bit smaller and lighter than this guy, but the difference isn't big. Still, there is a difference. And in terms of price, the Z8 is 7.5 times what I paid for my D750 (used). But I'm not sure it's 7.5 times better, and in any case, I won't be 7.5 times better with the Z8.
What's more, I've been holding off switching to mirrorless because one lens isn't yet available that I'd want: a 70-300ish telezoom. The Tamron is available, but that's a Tamron, and it's not as good as my Nikon 70-300 from what I read.
Still, the 14-30 is enticing. And the 24-120 as well. As for a body, all things considered, the Z7 is probably more for me - IF that focuses well enough.

While I'm overall thrilled with this camera, I don't believe it's the camera I was waiting for. My disappointment is with the vertical grip. It still only takes Nikon's small batteries not the larger ones. Plus when you add the grip it becomes significantly larger than the Z9. I always use a vertical grip (pinky curls underneath and get hand cramps without one). Don't a lot of professional light painting I need good battery life and that has scared me from jumping to mirrorless. The Z9 is probably the camera for me but I'm not exciting about spending that money - especially as converting will only get me a sideways step resolution wise from my D850. I can't justify a case for transitioning yet. My D4s backup is long in the tooth, but I just never touch it as my D850 has been so great since day 1. Eventually I'll be forced to go mirrorless and it'll be in the Nikon eco-system. Is it the Z9, whatever comes next as a flagship, I don't know.Maybe I'll drop down to a Z7II for other work other than light painting. I don't know.

I agree! A battery grip on Z8 will make it larger than a Z9 and to me it almost look like an after-thought, to be honest. If you consistently use a vertical grip you better save some more money and get the Z9 instead. Having said that, there’s also the option to hook a power bank to the usb-c port at the bottom on the Z8, if power supply is you main concern.

Cameras with removable grips are always larger than ones with integrated grips. That’s true since forever. Look at the F5 vs F100 with grip. Look at D3 vs D700 with grip. Look at D5 vs D850 with grip. Or any Canon for that matter.
I guess some people just haven’t been around cameras for very long. That’s why many people love integrated grip pro cameras like the Z9 or D5 - because they are smaller and more compact than comparable cameras with removable grips.

I also always use the vertical grip. The Z7 was a big disappointment for me for that reason, and I got the Z7II as soon as it was available.
If the speed is not needed, the Z7II has all the image quality of the Z9/Z8. With the grip, the Z7II feels very comfortable, an easy switch from the D850 (+ grip). The Z7II is half the price of the Z9... The Z7II grip has a USB-C port to power/charge it, and the first battery is hot-swappable.
The resolution of the Nikon full frame bodies will hopefully stay at 45mp. Going to 60mp is insignificant. Going even higher introduces even more diffraction at apertures in the f/8 range.

Nikon did this with the D800/D810/D850. The message is simple: "If you need the best high-speed performance, there's a camera for you. The Z9."
On one hand, some people are saying that the Z9 buyers will be angry that the Z8 is so close in features and performance. On the other hand, some people are asking why the Z8 doesn't have every feature and spec of the Z9. That suggests that Nikon found the sweet spot pretty well. The optimal price might be uncertain, but they can always lower that if it makes sense. Like if the Z7III is left on the drawing board.

If you want to add the vertical grip, this camera makes no sense. It’s bigger than the Z9, which also still has a better battery. It’s also bigger than the Z9 and the price difference is no longer significant. However, if you won’t use the battery grip and don’t mind storing jpegs on the SD card with raw on the CF, it’s a winner. I have a Z9 and find that I now shoot vertically much more so than I did before. However, if this was available when I bought the Z9, I might have bought the Z8.
As a wildlife shooter, I think that Nikon needs to continue firmware upgrades for both cameras so that eye detect has a greater range.

Actually I'm a little disappointed by the size of the Z8. I chose the Nikon mirrorless system because of the compact Z6 & Z7 bodies for full frame. Will the Z8 fit my hand a little better? Yes, but it's also heavier than its direct competitors. I really wanted a Z7 format body with the imporved autofocus of the Z9, the pre-buffer capability and the sensor protector when the camera is off. I would have given up some of its more advanced video modes for a more compact body. And the autofocus isn't still up to Canon and Sony levels. This according to online reviewers and influencers. Basically a mirrorless camera does not need to approach the size of a DSLR to be comfortable to hold. Old film SLRs were compact in size in comparison to DSLRs. No need for huge cameras if there is no need for a mirror box. Nikon has gone the wrong way on size and weight with the Z8.

Nope, this is the ideal size for a workhorse camera. Slightly smaller & lighter than the D850 which gave no hand cramps so I expect the same with the Z8. Canon R5 was half a size too small, doable for a full work day but mild hand cramp and Sony Alpha too small for work but good for traveling which is occasional camera holding.
