Something worth mentioning is that the Nikon constantly updates their cameras with firmware and add new features, whereas Sony ignores even its flagship a1.
aka Nikon releases an unfinished camera and tells you what they will be adding later on and then does it. Sony Releases their camera as is and makes 0 promises and people complain that other features from newer cameras are not added directly to the A1. I own a A1 and i wish did have the features of the newest cameras but i brought a complete camera and the update that gave it adjustable raw sizes and 8k 4:2:2 was cool for me. Should sony update their flagship? Hell yeah! but lets not act like Nikon is giving you everything they promised and more after. They're giving you less than what you should have and then getting you hype to get what you should have had in the first place.
@@yusei151 I have the a1, and it was highly buggy when I got it. The IBIS would wobble whenever the camera was moved, the EVF detector malfunctions when hit by sunlight, and the camera would crash when I mounted the 70-200 GM. It was an unfinished product to answer to Canon's R5. Sony had to implement firmware updates to solve all of this. Not impressed.
@@yusei151 Poor me when I bought my z9 it could not take photos or film videos. I mean I use it as a door stopper until they sent some firmware update LOL. You clearly don't know how those new cameras are more computers than actual machines and how much any computer can be enhanced by software optimization. It is like how when someone watches first generation games from a console and the one produced 4-5 years afterward on the same hardware. You would never think it was the same generation console.
The USB-C PD port allows for 8K60P RAW video shooting WHILE charging the battery. Over a 12 hour shooting day I did not once have to turn off my Z8, change its battery, or experience a hot camera or hot card warning. In real world use its incredible. I appreciate Nikon holding onto the EN-EL15 battery for OVER A DECADE, and the PD port helps alleviate an aging battery design issue. Something about the Z8's noise pattern is very reminiscent of high ISO film grain. I shot an indoor event in a dimly lit lobby and needed to stop down to get a huge group in focus. The auto ISO cranked up to 15,000 and the shot still looked beautiful with natural looking grain and retained highlight and shadow rolloff. Base ISO 64 on the Z8 stacked sensor really helps for portraits and landscapes vs iso 100 of a BSI sensor. Versus my Z6 I find that the Z8 is better from 64-500, Z6 is better from 800-3200, Z8 takes it back from 4000-25000. It really does matter where the dual native ISO's kick in. The Z8 having video ISO at 800 and 4000 is awesome.
Hey everyone! So lets keep in mind that I get paid by neither company. Also that we have done these comparisons for years and structure them based on categories which for simplicity sake does only leave room for a winner and a loser. Not exactly a perfect system but its accessible in a video format. Also my preferences are going to influence the decision in some ways. That's just the nature of reviews by humans. If you do stick around to the conclusion or read my article on Petapixel, you will find that although the Sony wins in most categories it's the Nikon Z8 which we chose as by far the more versatile camera and probably the camera most photographers should look at. Also many of the comments are accurate in so far as these two cameras do not really compete in the same fields necessarily. However, they are the same price and prospective buyers will take a hard look at both, hopefully our video helps inform that decision. Beyond that it's just going to be which of you already have Sony and will most likely keep supporting them, and vice versa for Nikon users. If anything I'm one of the few who gets to use all the cameras, and yet owns NONE of them. I have no dog in the fight, nor need to prop any brand over any other. The only system I would claim to own and use regularly is OM System. So how about both these cameras suck and you should all get an OM-1! :)
Thanks for the video, Chris. I’m looking to upgrade and was looking for a comparison of both. Love the way you and Jordan make the channel. Keep up with the good content and this energy you both give. All the best!
I already own Sony and the question is not whether I want to go on supporting them. I have the A7iv and it's awful for sports : 6 or 8 FPS and very low AF hit rate. But switching to another brand would be a huge loss, I'd lose one high end lens in the process. That is the question.
So, its nikons fault that is "too cheap" ? I wonder how a1 and r3 would score against a7r5 based on this test rules... This video only try to make a7r5 more apealing, while "protecting" the a1 status.
I am in the process of switching from Sony (A7R3) to the Nikon Z8 (still waiting for delivery). For me (and everyone will be different), there was no single area in which the Z8 was Earth-shatteringly better, but there were so many areas in which it suited my needs a little better that it was worth it to me to switch. For astro photography, the ability for the auto-focus to lock on to a single bright star and the ability to make the displays red (to protect my night vision) will be welcomed. For Birds in Flight and Aviation photography, the 20 FPS and the auto-detect AF will be nice. For Landscapes, the capability to do focus stacking in camera will be useful. Also, for me, then lens selection, while definitely not as extensive as the Sony lens line-up meets my needs perfectly. I see getting a "Holy Trinity" of the 14-30 f/4 S, the 24-120 f/4 S and either the 100-400 S or the 180-600 lens with the 20mm f/1.8 for astro and the Voightlander 15mm f/4.5 for wide angle Landscapes when I want a well defined sunstar. Everyone will have different needs, and no camera is perfect, but for me, it looks like the Z8 just might be worth switching systems for.
Yep. Same. I’m a little worried about overheating but I think the z8 serves all my needs in video and photography. Smaller than a Z9 and lighter and smaller than the D850.
We have the Sony a6400 , I had two Sony a7r3, sold one, gave the other to the wife. Also have a Fuji XH2s.Recently sold my Nikon Z7ii when I received my Z8. To me it's the best balanced hybrid camera for the money in full frame compared to everything else out there. No regrets.
For astro photography make sure you find the setting so that your focus is set to infinity when you turn the camera on. It my fave Nikon tip as I shoot a lot of astro. No need to refocus when you swap lenses out in the field !
It's clearly vastly superior in both features and recording abilities. Internal raw video all the way up to 8k60 full frame is class leading. I don't know of any camera in this price bracket that even comes close.
Coming from Sony and Fuji cameras the Nikon Z8 is by far my favorite camera I’ve owned. It is just so complete. A truly hybrid camera that is great at everything. I don’t ever feel limited by it. I also much prefer the colors over the other brands. I just wish Nikon would come out with the 1.4 Z lenses already.
Yap. 1.4 won't happen. The 1.8 /1.2 prime combo serves most people really well. But good news: There are 1.4 AFS lenses available, also from third party manufacturers.
@@hendrickziegler8487 Don’t count 1.4s out. There is a market for primes between 1-2k. Sony has the smallest and cheapest 50mm 1.2 yet they felt the need to still release a follow up 50mm 1.4, so Sony clearly thinks there is a market for $1400 primes.
With the bigger mount they clearly moved from 1.4 to 1.2, but the 1.8 are clearly very close (light gathering TSTOP) and better sharpness and distortion/aberration than most 1.4 lens.
For EVF/back screen, in real use I’m taking Z8’s implementation every time since it’s not limited in sunny conditions, is lag and blackout free and is consistent throughout. Oh and I personally wouldn’t use these types of cameras for vlogging or self video, so flippy screen is of no value to me.
The flippy screen is better on little cameras to vlog with i think because it can be pretty hard on your arms if you have a 1+KG camera at arms lenght except if you never skip arm day ^^ 1+KG may not seem that heavy but when recording for like 10+ minutes it's still too much for regular people ^^
@@OkwyUgonwezeI stopped trusting Sony a few years ago, for me the big numbers in presentations didn't translate in a better experience shooting. Now for me Nikon was a new discover (I had Canon DSLR and then Sony mirrorless). I never enjoyed shooting more than with Nikon, but I held back until some things happens: 1) Nikon seems a trusty supportive company, even my humble Z50 is a better camera after being suppored by firmware upgrades 2) More third party AF lenses and all kind of aftermarket like rigs, skins, protection gear, etc, for Nikon Z. Even very cheapo AF lenses from TTartisan, Viltrox, Yongnuo, Meike, Sigma, and 3) The Z9 and now the Z8 shows that Nikon is capable, have the tech and someday, sooner or later that will be in lesser models. So I sold all my Sony gear and go all in with Nikon
@@amermeleitor It am sure a z6iii will be on the card to cater for the 2000 USD market. I sincerely hope the delay is because they don't want to put that Sony 33 megapixel sensor. The thing has such a bad rolling shutter, I don't want a camera you cannot pan at all for video.
precisely, people who make a big fuss about the flippy screen probably doesn't know about real world camera usage. They're just pandering to the small UA-cam vlogger community. Why would i use a Professional camera for selfies? why would i use a professional camera just to record myself doing random stuff.
I'm exclusively a wildlife photographer who uses an R5. Its a stunning camera but fuck... that Z8 is probably the best camera ever made. 45mp, high burst rate, class leading IBIS that allows handheld wildlife video no stress, lagless EVF, 4K60 oversampled, animal eye-af.
Ive switched from Sony a74 and a7s3 to Nikon Z8…simply because of color science. After fighting Sony colours for 4 years Nikon is a DREAM to work with. There is NOTHING the Z8 cant do and its 8k60 raw internal is simply insane. Also, for some reason i feel the 45mp files have more detail in them then the Sony files from my a7rii (low pass filter? Placebo?) idk, the rendering of the files and especially skintones in mixed light is simply outstanding
Really? The Z8 with it's stacked sensor is a direct competitor to the Sony A1 no the Sony A7RV with it's slow sensor readout and slow FPS. 45 to 60 Megapixel is not a big difference which you will notice at all. What a strange comparison. Are you sponsored by Sony?
So to be clear (and as owner of a Z9 and A7RV), the Nikon really is the winner here. IQ is very close, but the Nikon's superior sensor read out speed means amazing video. The sensor also allows for better action, sports and even candids and event work. The Z8 is probably one of best, if not THE best wildlife platforms. Both are great cameras, but the Nikon is, as he said, the far more versatile camera.
Thank you! lugging a brick isn't exactly versatile to me! I walk around with the a7rv and 50mm f1.2, I wonder what's the difference in weight with the Z8 and bazooka Nikon calls 50mm f1.2.
@@Eliehbk I don't know who these people are that find cameras heavy. Maybe some time in the gym is a good idea. I can easily carry my Z9 and 70-200 2.8 for hours. If I found it heavy, I'd see my doctor!
@@robertbrody4032 I see! anyone who doesn't agree with you should see a doctor. I actually do my photography mostly traveling and hiking and minding two toddlers, so any help with the weight helps. Not everyone needs a brick to take/make pictures, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is three times the size of the Canon or Sony equivalent. Good for you that the Z8 works for you, enjoy it.
@@Eliehbk I think the Canon 50mm and Sony 50mm aren't in the same category as the Nikon 50mm Z 1.8s. Nikon's lens is equivalent to a Zeiss or the Sigma high end lenses. Nikon's 50mm 1.8s is currently the highest rated 50mm 1.8 on DXOMark. It is beating several Zeiss 1.4. So different category and hence the seize difference. Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM as an example cost $2300 and is not as sharp vs Nikon 50mm S lens.
I have both cameras and the Sony is going to be sold . The Sony wins in the af front but the Nikon is very close ,for portraits it’s a toss up. For sports the Nikon is miles ahead ,the lenses available in nikon system for wildlife is better than what sony has . The Sony has more details but Nikon has a better dynamic range . If you think that color science is not a thing then shoot people of colors and see the difference. For that alone makes nikon a better choice . People say sony menu is terrible but I find it better than nikon and canon . Button customization is better on the sony system ,having three custom recall settings is a blessing . Sony white balance is still way off and nikon is great in that direction . Overall the nikon is better fir portraits due to better color science, better white balance .Nikon also wins for sports and wildlife or any type of action . The sony screen integration is genius but their claim of 9 million eve is bogus .
Good points…I use the Z8 and Z9 cameras and love the ergonomics on both. I really do not understand why people keep harping on a flip screen on a $4000 dollar camera. I can see the appeal for a Z6III with a flip screen but I think it is strange for even the Canon R3 to have one. This is just me talking from my use case
Color science is the only reason I am thinking of moving back to Nikon from Sony. Do you find editing Nikon files easier than Sony? When I was shooting Nikon on my D750, I was happy with the jpegs. But with Sony I cant take that chance. Mostly due to the skin colors.
I love my Sony r5 but the z8 is at this moment in time the best hybrid camera you can buy in its price Range. Sorry Sony but in my view Nikon sweeps the floor and I think this video is one persons love of a small camera. As for better technology in a camera, Sony? I question this. Nikon stacked sensor, faster burst rate in stills, better video.????
Even my humble Z50 it's other camera compared when first purchased. Now it have eye continuous AF in video and very much improved AF in photo. Nikon added some small features too that improves the experience more an more, like the tally screen when filming video or more granular options
@@peetje28021970 when you compare products, you never base comparison on price, this is a rookie mistake, you compare product that target the same audience... and the Sony A1 and Nikon Z8 target the same audience.
@@prayagpankaj9237 Oh yes, I have seen a ton of example where the Sony does the same. If you listen to Sony fanboys you would think it never misses any shot.
Shot equally with both. Really liked the implementation of the screen on the Sony surprisingly. Sony gave me a blister within the first day of shooting. Don't want to start a "peta" war but Autofocus was a draw. Both have a bad tendency of front focusing and I found recovery with the Sony to be a bit trickier but in all honesty...I know function of Nikon inside and out and Sony not so much.
@@piyhaw Subjective but I've always thought Nikon has the best color science. Sony is easily correctable in Lightroom but straight out of camera Nikon is better.
just got the z8 after using the z7ii. Best all-around camera I used. I don't have large hand but prefer bigger body for long-day event shoots. Did 2 portrait shoots (about 3hrs) wildlife BIF abound 3hr, a concert, a skateboarding and a parade (2 cameras for over 3 hrs). It isn't perfect and I don't get 100% AF, but it works well in all situations, I do adjust my AF settings. Do I like the black out LCD, for spray and pray photography, yes...I do perfer smaller camera ad a walkaround travel. But I have a z30 for that. I do missed the z7ii a little, but not too much. My friend shoot the sony a7r4. He is handicap so it does well for him; easy auto mode. The buttons are too close together, but most of the same main buttons on both.
One should focus more on the actual user experience for cameras at this price range. I prefer the Z8 because it is more reliable and has a lot of user-friendly features. These include the operating temperature, the speed of booting up and shutting down, a better grip, a dedicated button for switching between the viewfinder and the display screen, backlit keys, Starlight View, warm display mode, and a right-hand menu. It also features comfortable leatherette and larger front and rear dials, individual zoom in and out buttons, vertical mode, more user-friendly settings for time-lapse photography, multi-focus composition. In addition, Nikon's lenses come with an extra separate control ring and display. And with the ETZ21 adapter, all Sony's autofocus lenses or lenses from other brands can be mounted, because the Z mount is very large. Future firmware upgrades will add automatic shooting functionality to the Z8, similar to the Z9.
Hi Chris I am a huge fan of you both but first time I felt extremely surprised to see such contradictory statements and some lack of analysis For example non of these cameras are vlogging camera and non of these two are selfie cameras so the point of being able to take your own shot in selfie or vlogging is not sensible Nikon wins hands down with its stacked sensor It’s better menu and ergonomics It’s video capabilities Frame rates And in lens lineup more number doesn’t mean better , Nikon has all those that Sony has and better and on top 400 TC and 600 TC which no one has anything that can match up Changing teleconvertor on sony while in Nikon flick of a switch And how can you compare sony s age old dos system like menu to that of Nikon s menu layout Also Nikon has no rolling shutter issue which Sony a7r5 has So these are such big things that Sony cannot stand even near Only area is AF where I agree Sony has better AF I felt that your personal preference took over your fair analysis
Well I do feel that my personal preferences are valid when I'm the one reviewing the cameras, but a lot of the things being stated are subjective to personal preference. Sony menus are fine now, I don't get why people still harp on them. It's not like Nikon has the most intuitive menus either. Ergonomics are also subjective. Image quality is very similar but the Sony gives you more megapixels without losing anything to the Nikon except read out speed. Absolutely the Nikon destroys when it comes to sports and action, but I clearly agreed with that. The fact of the matter is that these cameras don't really compete with each other but the challenge was to compare them. I think the Z8 is a far more versatile camera and stated so in the conclusion.
@@niccollsvideo Are you serious that the 15 MP difference in resolution between the Z8 and A7RV makes a big jump in image quality? That's a lie at best. I would like to see a blind test between 45 MP and 60 MP images using the exact same scenery.
"Better" ergonomics and menus? That's subjective, so you can't fault others for choosing different than you. You are also cherry picking, since clearly the two cameras are for different niche. A7R series was always for prioritizing resolution and image quality over other features that it can perform but its not a priority. If you shoot studio portraits, product photography, landscapes, architecture, archival work. high end fashion and beauty work etc. Its a perfect camera for that because it was designed for that. I don't know why Z8 was used for comparison since its not two cameras meant to do same things. Each camera was designed with different purpose and approach to photography. In terms of brands its also a strange comparison since Sony offers wide range of photo and video gear for all kinds of users and share same lens mount. Nikon yet does not do that. There is no equivalent of cinema line cameras for Nikon, while Sony uses them with the same e-mount. etc. So its really a strange comparison. There is no lack of options on the market, but one needs to be clear about what one wants to shoot and how. As for Chris and Jordan, they are entertainers on youtube. They don't really buy the gear they "review", they don't really do proper testing, they are primerally entertainers on youtube. Generic script, generic shooting check list, few jokes, keep it short and entertaining, see you next week. Done. They don't live from photography or videography other than youtube stuff as far as I know and that shows in their videos.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonasI never said that though. I said that both sensors are excellent and that the Sony gives you extra megapixels without any compromises compared to the Nikon. So basically more megapixels for the same everything else. I state all this very clearly in this video. How the Nikon has way better rolling shutter which is really more for video. I even state how megapixels aren't even that important. I state clearly this very argument you are also making.
Z8 must be compared to A1. A7R5 is comparable only by price. Z8 is far more versatile and far better for video. I hope Nikon will do more shutterless bodies in the future and me personally eager to see Z6iii .
There are two features of the Z8 that appeal to me; which are making me strongly consider purchasing one; and which you didn't mention: a curtain over the sensor when changing lenses, and illuminated buttons. This obviously wouldn't have changed your ultimate decision, but to me they make it stick out from almost every other camera, including the a7R V. Thank you for the great review, as always.
same here. The features Chris compared are practically passable for any camera these days but those little nuances are what make the difference - illuminated button, curtain and my favorite - the red light for night photography in the z8
One of the best features of the Nikon 'second-tier' full-frame cameras is that the jpeg image embedded in the raw file is full resolution. I take it for granted so much that I'm confused when I use raw images from another camera with small embedded jpegs. This lets me photograph in only raw, extract the embedded jpeg files, and deliver those. It also works because the images meet most people's needs straight out of the camera. If a particular image and use case would benefit from additional processing, the raw file is still at hand.
@@stevemckenzie4731 The Z8 gets the sensor shield feature from the Z9, which was released before the A7RV. The A7RV "curtain" is the shutter, not a specific sensor shield. In many ways, the shutter of a camera like the A7RV is more delicate than the sensor so this is a less than ideal solution.
This video doesn't have pushed any significant Sony A7RV sales. Sorry that your Sony advertising has failed. But interesting to know: How much has Sony paid you to make such a biased video?
As a Sony user, I'd choose the z8 any day, Sony has been stuck with 10fps since 2017 it feels outdated, Nikon is making giant steps, if it had better lenses ecosystem I'd sell all my Sony gear
Nikon may not have as much lenses but most of them are truly amazing ! while even if sony also have really good lenses many of theses " so many lenses " are quite old/not that great, it's mostly quality vs quantity, i prefer 1 good lense vs 4 ok lenses, especially since i'll have only one of them at a time on my camera anyway ^^
Their are some adapters that can fit Sony lens, that people are saying works very well. Nikon F was the worst lens mount in terms of adaptibility because it had the longest flang distance etc. The Z mount is the exact opposite as it is the biggest (FF) mount at least in the common camera market and the shortest.
Feels outdated? Lol. Thank goodness you don’t know much about the Sony system. Lol. I’m a Nikon user and as a photographer the Sony is by far the better camera. 10 fps isn’t a big issue at all.
@@andreaskaphengst8121 well isn't the A9II a 5000€ camera that can go to 20FPS only with electronic shutter ( but 5 in mecanical ) while beeing "only" a 24MP camera ? ^^ And the A1 may be better but yeah... 30FPSfor 5 sec then dead buffer, for a 7300€ camera, still nice but except for the AF i think the Z9/Z8 are better ( even if indeed heavier :/ )
@@BucNasty32 dude I´ve owned an a7r3 since 2017 and I tell you, 10fps is the thing that prevents me from buying a new body, the a7r5 has 15 more mpxs but that´s not impresive, 42mpxs is more than enough, while a canon r8 can shoot 20fps at only $1500, but the point is this 2 cameras on the video, the z8 can shoot 20fps, the a7r5 only 10, the z8 can record 8k 60fps, the a7r5 only 24fps with a crop, even my Sony rx10m4 can shoot 24fps, sony has the tech they are only being dicks to their user base thinking that people will not switch brands
As indicated in the review, the Z8 is inferior to the A7RV in so many respects, that next time, a comparison with the A7 IV would be fair. I.e. more 50/50 balanced with regards to who wins what categories? Let's remember, shooting after birds is not the most important thing in the universe, but just a small niche for elderly men with white or no hair (at least this is the cliche, fed by whenever I'm seeing one in action).
@owenrodgers8020, Let's assume the Sony a6100 (for $700) is currently the one, whose eye AF dependability is closest above the Z9 (therefore also to the Z8), for the time being 😉 So yes, formally it is correct that currently Sony has no camera similar to how disappointingly the Z9 performs with regards to some eye AF traits 🤔
The high burst rate and video capabilities of the Z8 give it a huge advantage for me, and the A7R V's deficiencies in those regards would be deal-breakers. I would personally give the Z8 a huge win when it comes to ergonomics, since to me at least it's way more comfortable than any other mirrorless camera. I would also give it the win on image quality, since I just prefer Nikon's color science. While I agree with your reasoning for giving the win to Sony on lens selection, it's my experience that Nikon's Z mount lenses are a cut above the rest. Sony deserves the win based on available lens selection, but I believe that Nikon's top-tier glass is without equal.
I think people who have used the A7RV and Z8/Z9 know the Z8 can do more, and while the AF might be a bit better in some situations on the Sony, it’s pretty close. A lot of the talk of Sony’s AF being “AI” and so amazing are kind of a gimmick.
It can do more but you still may want a smaller camera with longer battery, free-Angle tilting screen, higher res EVF, higher resolution with bigger lens selection. Z8 is superior in more situations but if you just use the camera for travel, some landscapes, street portraits..etc it's not doing anything better than the A7RV and a lot of users will end up in that category. Thats basically why Chris still picked the A7RV. Like anything in life pick the correct tool for the job. A7RV with a pancake 24mm GM lens is only .35 lb heavier than a Leica Q3(both 61 mp). It's stealth setup. Want to do everything in a bigger camera....Z8 wins easy. Z7III may answer some of the things that Sony does better for those that want that.
@@83442handle Yes, there’s a variety of use cases for both. I’m only speaking to the autofocus superiority. If you want a do everything camera, there’s no much debate, IMO. And I’m a Sony shooter who switched from Nikon. I wish Sony would release a Z8/EOS R5 style body.
@@DieHardEddieEdwardsYes extremely similar. With that said if you want R5/Z8 body than Sony is the wrong place for you lol. Thats part of Sony's biggest strengths is that they have the most polarizing design(either love or hate it) whereas Canon/Nikon/Panasonic are all more similar and have to compete with each other more.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Yes lots of people like computers which is my point. Sony has there market and Canon/Nikon/Panasonic will competing against each other for their market.
Chris, you forgot to mention that Sony drops the EVF resolution while focusing... are there other cases where Sony drops the EVF resolution? This was also mentioned at DP Review while testing the Nikon Z9 against the Sony A1. Sony doesn't have the dual stream technology which leads to stutter-free EVF on the Nikon with high burst rates.
11:20 I confirm I was very surprised by the Z8 in terms of video.. it really was great in terms of IQ, no rolling shutter, very stable, good colors (as always) and overall very smooth, including for the focus, no hunting and fairly fast to adjust 15:00 the burst mode of the Z8 is indeed amazing, it does really do the 20 fps in raw; it's game changing for many sports or animal photography. I have to go back do some whale watching with the Z8; a breach is about 1.5s so you can imagine the difference
I mean the Z8 is more of an A1 competitor since it is an A9 without grip. I have both A1 and A7RV, but have used CaNikon for over 30 years. For me (read «for me» all fanboys), the Sony ergonomics are one of the reasons I chose the Sony A7RV over the other Z8 and R5. The Sony A7RV, for example, has 5 control wheels. A separate wheel for EV comp that can be locked, you can actually also change this to be a wheel for ISO when, for example, you use manual mode. A wheel for shutter and a wheel for aperture. There is also a large multi wheel that covers several functions in addition to ISO. Most newer Sony lenses also have a lovely aperture wheel on the lenses which gives a lovely feeling back to when I started photography. For example, on the Nikon you have to press a button to change the function from the shutter/aperture wheel to EV comp if you want to use it. Nikon and Canon lack function wheels according to my personal user process. I also find the placement of the shutter release button and front dial on the Canon to be reversed from what I like on the Sony. The AF-ON button on the Sony is higher/deeper and larger than on the Nikon and Canon, and gives me a better feel during use. The PAD button, where you can, for example, change the focus point location etc. is larger and deeper, as well as much more robust and gnarly on the Sony than on the Nikon and Canon. It gives me a better feel and easier to operate. All the function buttons also seem a bit larger and deeper on the Sony than on the Nikon and Canon, more angular and not so round, which makes the feeling more secure in my experience. There are also more buttons and more options to personalize them on the Sony than any other camera I've tested. For video hybrid shooters, Sony also has a separate wheel that changes the entire camera setup with wheels, buttons and menus, from still image setup to video movie setup, where also all the C1-C2-C3 setups can be completely different between still image and video. This also applies if you turn the wheel to S&Q mode. You can have 12 completely different camera setups just by turning a separate wheel. I like to use the viewfinder, then I shut out the rest of the world, and the camera must be easy to operate with the eye of the viewfinder. I also think that the viewfinder on the A7RV and A1 is second to none. It's beautiful when you want to shut out the world, and not least when you want to examine the picture you've taken. So many details, so light and so big. The flexible LCD screen is also without parallel, there is not a single angle it cannot be placed in. Here Sony is much better than Nikon and Canon in my opinion. I also like to take as little as possible with me on my mountain trips, Sony gives me the most quality and ergonomics in relation to size than any other camera setup. I'm also a big fan of the aesthetic form factor of the Sony. The more angular, retro-like shape of the 70s-80s Sony is, to me, much more appealing and nostalgic than the 1990s-2000s DSLR-like shape that CaNikon has stuck to. So… there is much more to the ergonomics of a camera than just a large grip. The grip on the Sony A7RV is perfectly fine for my normal Norwegian hands, and I can use the camera perfectly in the cold with gloves on. I also use L-bracket on all my cameras, so my little finger will also rest perfectly around the grip. Thus, everything else I have described plays a much bigger role for me than a large DSLR grip. Ergonomics and user satisfaction are so much more than a big grip.
I think Sony is really lacking a high burst rate + high resolution camera in the $3000-4000 price-range right now. Canon has the R5, Nikon has the Z8, Sony only has the A1, which is a lot more expensive than these two. I've been waiting for Sony to release such a camera or for Canon to release an affordable x-600mm zoom, but then came Nikon out of nowhere, releasing both within a couple of weeks. Last week I ordered the Z8 + the new 180-600.
@@andreaskaphengst8121 24MP on Full frame just doesn't really cut it for a camera that costs 800€ MORE than a z8, where I live. I don't think that buying the Sony makes any sense unless you're already in the system.
@@andreaskaphengst8121I don't print, but doing wildlife, I crop a lot. Almost half the resolution for 800€ more is hard to justify, despite the superior autofocus of Sony cameras. I follow Mark smith, and while I really like his videos, it's super obvious that they are artificially upscaled. I think he even runs ad's showing before and after. In the end, pretty much every system is used by great professionals, that isn't much of an argument.
"Came out of nowhere" ... 😂 😂 😂 Seriously? The Z8 had been rumoured/teased for almost 3 years. Nikon's answer to Sony's 200-600 for at least 12 months.
@@cy9nvs "artificially upscaled" sounds like you are confusing stuff. He is usually shooting and presenting 4K and may occasionally be cropping further after the fact. But that is a choice, not a limitation of his cameras. He has at least the A1, an A7sII and a A9m1. All of them can shoot crisp 4K with no upscaling whatsoever. His A1 could do 8K, would he want that.
The Nikon is great and what the z6 and z7 should have been two years ago. The Sony is great also but its starting point was already well polished cameras that preceded it. Reason I left Nikon to go with Sony is that Nikon take so long to produce new models they are left constantly playing catch up and in the meantime other manufacturers have been there, done that and are now moving on. Hopefully the z8 will give Nikon a bit of a kick to get their finger out a bit quicker in the future.
I know why these Sony advertisers/fanboys don't compare Nikon Z8 to Sony A1 - it's because Z8 is a flagship camera in a smaller body which already demolishes the A1 in price by a wide margin. Both Z9/z8 demolish A1 in new tech, prores raw internal recording/video, evf, sports/wildlife capabilities, etc. Let that sink in.
Both are obviously great cameras. But you picked the Sony as a winner in a category that made a drumstick look like it's made of rubber? Really? So much of this comes to personal choice. They are both great cameras. Thanks for the review on how they compare.
We did talk about the lag free EVF in this comparison, and in our review of the Z8 we also talk about this in depth. I even state that I was initially thrown by the lower megapixel count and have since come around that the lag free EVF is worth it. Doesn't take away from the Sony having and excellent EVF that doesn't really suffer much lag and is far more detailed.
@chrisnichols it’s all in the wording. “Brighter, constant resolution EVF that reminds me of an OVF” sounds better than “dim and variable resolution EVF”. But the only comment Sony’s EVF’s get is the higher resolution. Nikon’s approach was the first EVF to maker forget I was looking at a little TV. With Sony, you’re constantly reminded of it. And Sony “wins” the lens choice because of their 7 year head start? By that notion Nikon should win because of their 70 year head start. And every Sony lens cdn be adapted to Nikon via the Megadap E to Z adapter. Love you guys and your reviews but this is was a Sony hand job.
Even thought I don't shoot action and wildlife I'm choosing the Z8 over the A7R V for its video capabilities. It's the only high resolution camera except for the Z9 that shoots full width oversampled 4k/60 and I shoot everything in that mode.
You can tell this video is very bias in Sonys favor. I kept deciding between the Sony and Nikon ecosystem. Due to Sony’s lack of firmware updates, and overpriced models that depreciate quick, I think I’m going to have to go with the Z8. Love the speed for sports and wildlife. I’d be using it for everything!
I never could get used to how Sony cameras feel. As a Nikon shooter, I would say the Z8 is my favourite Nikon camera. It replaced my long term number 1 the D810.
I am using Sony a7iv for the past 2 years and being used NIkon for more than 15 years, I personally feel that Sony is far behind when it comes to COLOR. I also checked Canon, Fuji, and Olympus and Sony is definately behind. Experts said it is not 'color scince', but 'color management'. I have done enough experiments and unfortunately have to admit that Sony is far behind when it comes to color. I agree that Sony's AF is blazing fast, lenses are sharp etc. etc......but the color really sucks. I don't face much problem with Sony color whenever I don't use flash ( in fact I can fix them easily), but whenever I use Sony for macro with 3 flashes, Sony often fails to understand the color/light, especially the bounce lights from nearby surfaces.
Well it is his camera and he started out by saying it fit his smaller hands and he obviously owns the Sony. The Z8 is a much better camera for my overall use because I can dabble with wildlife and action although that isn't my main focus. I think it is just amazing to shoot consistently at over 10fps especially when you're shooting crowds and one person isn't smiling or making a weird face when they weren't ready when taking a shot just holding down the button you will likely have a better just of the instance where everyone plastered a smile on their faces before letting it go. Heck it is just amazing how fast CF Express B can toss around 45mp images and video the technical leap I experience whenever I use it is pretty amazing. I personally think the Sony is an ergonomic disaster but that is just my opinion.
I don’t know if it’s because you’ve been with Petapixel recently, but in my opinion, you are very biased towards Sony. Since when the fact that you have smaller hands decides on which is a better design on the camera? I work for a camera store and we have so many Sony camera coming back because they have defect versus any Nikon any time and we sell like tons more Nikon. I think you just like Sony better now which is fine, but don’t give us that BS of a comparison. The only way I will agree with you is for the lenses that have more choices for Sony. There is more resolution in the Sony, but as you said, does anybody really need this ?
I bought the A7RV (big dent in my budget) back in December 2022 and, in retrospect, I am still happy with my choice. No regret. Size, weight, autofocus, rear screen, resolution, stills oriented, etc, are the things that matter to me. And I'm more into stills than video. As a matter of fact, I rarely do video. The A7RV for the win for me!
Nikon is really upping its game. The useability on Nikon has always far outweighed Sony. Nikon needs to bring out a new APSC to take on the new Sony one coming out. Nikon could be about £1000 with IBIS. Is the rumoured Nikon Z70 still waiting in the wings? Nikon straight out of camera colour is best on market. It’s jPegs are best in market. Z8 is my ultimate camera but too pricey for me. I only have a Z30 6 months but nice firmware updates. My Sony camera never had any firmware in 3 years!
Matt Irwin compared the Nikon 45.7 megapixel sensor versus the Sony 60 megapixel sensor and the Sony started getting softer focus at about f/8 due to diffraction. He concluded that 45 megapixels was just about the sweet spot for today's lenses and anything more than that will cause sharpness to deteriorate at anything higher than f/5.6. There is a reason those 100 megapixel cameras require different lenses.
This is only partly true. Sharp enough lenses are meant to be used with 60 MP and they can resolve the details even after what was mentioned. Furthermore with the aid of lens correction software done right, these are not really limitations anymore. If you want ultimate picture quality out of these cameras, currently DXO PhotoLab is best option. They compensate for the lens softness and using neural networks they can clean up the photos and bring out the fine details in ways that the previous limitations such as diffraction at f/8 is not an issue. Proper Software + lenses can compensate for problem of higher MP and there is really no problem shooting 60 MP at f/10 or higher. Did he use those methods in his tests?
@@KrunoslavStifter You cannot endlessly correct a lens with software without degrading image quality or without to crop the image. Therefore optical correction is still done in the lens for premium lenses. Something Sony still doesn't understand with it's heavy focus breahting lenses.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas "Something Sony still doesn't understand with it's heavy focus breahting lenses." Actually its more likley you don't understand the choices they made and why. The focus breathing lenses are far smaller and require less glass, hence less weight and cost less to make. You need to compensate for focus breathing peripherally in certain style of video making and Sony approach to that was focus breathing compensation. Which works quite well. By clever utilization of software compensation for focus breathing they provide smaller, cheaper to make, lighter lenses that can still provide superb image quality. Like some of the GM lenses. Sharp, light, fast. Only downside really is focus breathing in video that can be solved by software. This is not lack of understanding of Sony engineers , its a deliberate prioritization at the minimum compromise.
Asymmetrical slots are very annoying. Anyone who says CFE-B cards don't fail, I wish you luck, because ETTF isn't dominated by how hard the card physically is. Internal solid state memory would fail like a SSD. I wish Nikon could implement a firmware update to allow the photographer to shoot to CFE-B only, and then backup to the SD card automatically in the background when the camera is idle. Best of both worlds (speed and redundancy). Current implementation is inefficient since you are dragging the CFE-B card to SD speed, but you still have to pay the CFE-B price. Furthermore, the card sizes are also different. Very annoying.
Z8 better video, higher frame rates, same image quality, Nikon firmware updates Nikon winner. I had the A7R iv and 60mp is overkill and unnecessary 99.9%of the time
I said that about 45mp and I still do except I have a Z8 and I can now justify it by saying if I switched to DX crop mode I can still get good 20mp images at the extra distance. 😅
@@MB-dq2gz But the difference between 45 MP and 60 MP is only 15 MP which you won't notice at all. So this is basically the artificial hype about the Sony.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I shot a 16mp camera for years and thought that was more than enough in 2011. It's a noticeable difference. Cameras used to update to a couple megapixels at a time for their new generation. Maybe that makes my perspective a little skewed because of it I dunno.
Right after I saw Jordan’s verdict give Nikon the win I realized that this was not an easy battle between these two cameras! Still in the middle of watching this video! I want the Nikon to win so bad because I love the design of the Z8
Nikon Z-Mount can mount every Sony E-Mount lenses with autofocus as well as Canon EF lenses using the appropriate adapter which is very tiny for Sony E-Mount.
Reviews are helpful to an extent. 10 years ago, how good were those cameras? How reliable were those cameras in getting the shots? Probably very, according to the review...of course, it was all relative to the technology at the time. My point is, if cameras from 10 years ago were amazing, any camera today surpasses the technical aspects, and it doesn't matter too much which camera you get, as long as it suits your needs. At this point, it's entirely up to the photographer to get the shot. If you aren't getting the shot, you probably just need to refine your technique.
As a landscape photographer and multiple system user, I normally put more weight on the sensor resolution, but in this particular case, if I can have only one camera and need to select between these two, ( luckily I don't have to make that decision and currently own A7R III and A7R IV and Z7 and Z9), I would definitely pick the Z8, really easy decision, i love the bigger size and more comfortable body Nikon offered, and will give up the resolution, my A7R IV feels so uncomfortable to handle so I really only use it on tripod, for handheld event shooting, I would even go back to the Z7 which has worse AF system comparing to my Sony, but at least it won't hurt my fingers after a full day event, with the even bigger Z8 body, the overall handling and ergonomics can only be even improved and closer to the D850 and Z9.
I have been using Sony APS-C for several years, always wondering about FF. One big advantage of the A7RV is that the 60MP sensor can be used in APS-C mode, providing 28MP images. This allows me to continue to make good use of the six APS-C lenses I have, a lens selection I've carefully formed to suit my needs. A collection for which I spent $4,000. Were I to buy an A7RV I could simply shift from my Sony a6600 body to the A7RV body, with the resulting improvements in Auto Focus, dual card slots, BSI sensor, improved IBIS, faster mechanical shutter, improved white balance, better color science, and better EVS, all without spending a dime on lenses. Then I can carefully add FF lenses where I think they will do the most good. It is interesting to watch the comparison reviews of the A7RV and Z8 (and R5) but switching away from Sony isn't in my plan. Well done video review as always.
nailed it. admittedly as a gear whore, this is hard for me to stomach. But switching to nikon would be very very expensive. And the a7rv in crop mode is almost the perfect camera
Great to use any Sony E-Mount lens including autofocus on Nikon Z-Mount with adapters from Techart, Megadap or Fotodiox. For videographers the Z8 and Z9 have still a greater value with internal 8K 60p or oversampled 4K recording. And you won't get stacked sensor performance with very low rolling shutter for the price of a Z8 at Sony. For still shooters you get 30, 60, 120 FPS for action shots or you can pull a photo from a 8K video stream with the 45 Mpix sensor. A7RV has bad rolling shutter and low FPS for stills. The Z8 and Z9 are great and way more flexible allround cameras that can do it all with high resolution as well. The A7RV is of limited use.
Hello! And thanks for another great video. But are you just biased now because you use Sony yourself?....Thought about what you said about AF... Most testers on UA-cam say Canon is as good or even better. It's actually been a long time since I heard someone on UA-cam say that Sony is the best... Maybe your Sony just got an update?.. Please tell a bit more about why Sony's AF is the best?... Thanks!😊
I think Sony has a slight edge over Canon. However lets also keep in mind that I am not a Sony shooter. In fact the only camera that I shoot regularly outside of UA-cam is an OM Sytem.
His review is actually spot on. I have both bodies and everything he stated is spot on. Knowing that Sony makes Nikon's sensors: comparing image quality is pointless. At the end of the day is about priorities and your style of shooting. I do prefer Nikon because of the controls and ergonomics, it's just easier to rapidly change settings while framing the shoot. But when mobility and weight is an issue, Sony is more suitable. Comparing the EVF and giving Sony the win is BS. It's a tiny screen and there's no way you will notice the difference. I think Nikon knew that and decided to stick with a lower res EVF in favor of lag-free fast response display which is brilliant. Operation wise, the Nikon is just faster and snappier. I also hate Sony's file system. One more important thing, probably the most important: glass quality. Many Sony lenses including the 24-70 GM 1&2 suffer from CA. I have yet to see a high-end Z lense suffering from CA. So overall, the Nikon wins as a practical photography solution. Designed for productivity and capturing images with fun and passion. I'm not eve gonna touch on video because the Z8 and Z9 are in a league of their own.
I don't think it's a fair comparison. I think the z8 is closer to the Canon R5 in specs. You guys should compare them next. I think when the z7 III comes out it will be close to the Sony a7R5. But that's just speculation right now. If I'm not mistaken the Sony system does not give you image stabilization in both the lenses and camera. I think their IBIS only works if the lens doesn't have stabilization or if it's turned off. Nikon gives you both. Sony also has an issue with focus breathing with a lot of their lenses. You get a pulsing in video. The Nikon Z lenses have little to no focus breathing or chromatic aberration. And because the phlange distance is so narrow on the z bodies you can adapt E mount lenses. I don't think the third party E mount work that well though. Nikon's menus are some of the easiest to use. Sony's isn't. At the end of the day it comes down to compromises. Every brand has theirs. You just have to decide what you need and what you can live without. Every brand is great at something. They all make good cameras these days. I don't think anyone is making a bad sensor. Find what works for you in your budget and go with it.
Of course Sony wins, they win because they have the best ecosystem, plus if you're an EVF user, there is nothing better than the A7RV. Nikon is still catching up with both great lens selection and f1.4 / f1.2 glass, and their AF isn't as good. Nikon will always be 3rd in the mirrorless world with Canon and Sony fighting for first. But either way you look at it, consumers are winning with an amazing camera from each of the big 3.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I've used them before, they aren't as good as the competition, hence why I sold them. I get it though, Nikon fanboys are much like Fuji fanboys.
The Nikon Z8 was released in May. This video was made 5 months ago, which means you shot this video around June or July. Then you talked about the z8 not doing well under heavy snow. How did you get heavy snow to determine that?
If you can't get a great shot with either one of these cameras and use these daily for pro work to earn a living...it's not the camera, it's you. Both of these are great cameras, well suited for a variety of work.
I could see the lens selection category be less clear-cut, if adapted lenses are considered, if the drawbacks of using an adapter are manageable. I suppose that Tamron or Sigma E-mount lenses on a Sony body wouldn't have correction profiles, for example. In which case adapted use wouldn't be sacrificing anything in that regard.
That's an incorrect supposition. Sony bakes lens correction into the RAW file, so Tamron and Sigma have full corrections. It's...literally the biggest reason to go for E Mount.
@@HappyHubris So Sony spends time and money integrating correction profiles for non-Sony lenses into their firmware? edit: or is the correction profile communicated to the camera by the lens itself?
And Sony doesn't have the dual stream technology like Nikon for EVF stutter-free playback while shooting high burst rates. Sony drops the resolution in the EVF on the A1 while focusing.
Im surprised that Sony didn’t pay you guys to compare their flagship A1 to the Z8? 😂😂😂 I mean these two bodies are not even built for the same purpose and only similarity is price point and even so the plus points of the A7R5 over the Z8 you can count on 1 hand whilst the Nikon you need all limbs for the count up! Nikon is killing it bringing a flagship featured body at a prosumer price point. Shame on this review as just comes across super transparent but I do hear they pay very well for marketing
Im a Nikon shooter looking to upgrade the camerahouse, and the Sony A7iv looks so appealing 😅 at the same time, the new Nikons seems like have caught up with autofocus and stuff...
FYI - For all those moaning in the comments about why they didn't compare this to the A1 as if this is some kind of 'Alex Jones type grand conspiracy against Nikon' please just go watch the other thousand videos out there on the Z9 and the A1. The Z8 is almost the same to the Z9 so if your smart enough you can figure out the differences. Yes they compared 2 cameras of similar price that are not the flagship models. Get over it.
You forgot: Sony doesn't offer any firmware updates. The A1 is pretty outdated and doesn't get any features from other Sony cameras for a flagship price. As a customer this is a no go!
The Z9 and Z8 are two of the best hybrids on the market currently! I know this is about the Z8, but the Z8 is right under the Z9 as a hybrid and hard to beat that. Nikon is very slept on, in fact I’m still wondering how Nikon beat Sony and Canon to the creation of Auto Capture, it’s a for sure game changer; and hopefully when Auto Capture trickles down, it will allow creators and photogs to have that type of functionality without having the budget for several high end cameras. Anyways, I’m not knocking Sony, but the Z8 is hard to beat at the moment, and I personally can deal with the battery life as you always need more than one anyway, depending on what you’re shooting. Nikon for the win!
Nikon is killing it with its superb telephoto lenses, but ironically Sony cameras work better with telephoto lenses because all the controls are consolidated to the right side, allowing the photographer to control everything with the right hand, while the left hand supports the lens. Nikon wasted the top right with a redundant LCD, and put the most important MODE button to the left. How am I supposed to switch between M and S modes quickly if I my subject moves erratically? I never had this problem with the F5, F6, all the way to the D4s. Nikon made a wrong decision since the D5 and should have fixed it by now. Canon used to have the PSAM and mode button on the left years ago, but their latest RF cameras all have the mode control on the right side.
@@livejames9374 Yes, it helps, but I wish it was like the Z5 where the PSAM dial is on the right, or the classic F5 to all the flagships before the D5.
The Sony has better autofocus ? For moving subjects the hit rate is no more than 70% (c.f. tests from Damien Bernal and the Northrups). At 6 or 10 FPS... It seems the Z8 performs much better in this case.
Add Mathieu Gasquet to the list. 84% for a7r5 at 10fps vs 96% for Z9 at 20 fps on old firmware for birds in flight (raptors). My guess is Sony focused on people with their AI chip and said good enough for fast action focus.
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but there's a huge downside to the two USB-C ports on the Z8 for tethered shooter. Coming from the Z7II I was able to shoot in the studio with one USB cable providing power delivery and data transfer via a computer. That's no longer possible with the Z8. You have to choose either data or power or run TWO USB cables. When I'm shooting I'm connected to the data USB port and then during longer breaks I switch the cable over to the power delivery port to charge the battery. Couldn't they have made it so one USB-C port provided power & data and the other just data? They've taken the capability of one port and split it into two and I can't figure out the use case for this.
Use case actually is when you are out in the field to have a power delivery port and a data port which you can use at the same time. If you are shooting outdoor it makes sense because you can use bigger power banks. I guess it is splitted because the power delivery accepts more power than USB-C standard.
This is a B.S. review. The deck was stacked against the Z8 from the jump. He gave Sony the edge in Video? B .S. This dude is the only person to pick the A7RIV over the Z8 that I've seen. Absolutely a biased review towards the Sony.
Gee, what a surprise, Chris just LOVES the Sony, never would have guessed it before watching the vid. Notice there's always the "but, but, but...." His opinion is just that, oh, and I have no allegiance to any brand, but anyone who watches his reviews knows the Sony will always get the nod.
I tried both a Z9 and a a7r4 for sports. Both are perfectly capable. I was also shooting with the Sony 100-400 on the Sony and an f to z adapted 200-500 on the Nikon. One big takeaway on the Sony was the smaller grip especially when holding the 100-400 which also zooms on the closest ring causing me to hold the lens closer to the body. I felt like I had less stability holding the camera applying a lot of pressure to my middle finger against the grip holding the camera up. After a full day this was quite uncomfortable. I k I’m not quite a fair comparison against my huge grip Z9 but even when shooting my Nikon D800, it was much more comfortable holding the bigger camera. Having said that, I did appreciate the lightweight of the Sony compared to my heavier Z9.
Battery and dummy grips exist for Sony cameras, you know. I use a Sony camera with a hollow grip for my larger hands and it's the best of both worlds: lightweight and capable for big hands.
you're not incorrect on the grip. I have been shooting Sony since 2015, and that pressure on my right middle finger from the smaller body has caused arthritis. I was shooting weddings, and lots of handheld gigs, and at the end of the day, lots of pain in my hands. So, it does make a difference. I get cortisone injections in that finger join once a year, thankfully, not really painful at all, but it allows me to shoot pain free.
Holy cow this MUST have been sponsored by Sony 😂 how can you mention the rolling shutter on the Sony for example and talk about that 45 MP is more than enough and that both deliver good results, but the sony has worse high iso performance, and yet in the end once again just give the point to the Sony anyways WTF this seems absolutely irrational to me.
I used to like your reviews, this one? Z8: stack sensor, 20-frame/sec, lighter weight vs Z9, great 600, 400 lens with built in TC, Z8 is already the dream camera for wild life photographers. For Portrait and landscapes, you can buy several cameras with half of the money, and will still do a great job same as A7R5... i.e. A7R4... just my 2cents
The point is, how in the world a specialised camera like a7r5 win a multi sections review if its not biased ? Except high mpx, how can you make it win against a complete hybrid camera ?
A friend of my has the Nikon Z8 and using it for concert photography. I see a lot of of banning in his photos. Is this because of the electronic shutter?
@@yusei151 Rubbish. Nikon added a lot of new features. The camera was already complete. You are simply a jealous Sony shooter.

The IBIS would wobble whenever the camera was moved, the EVF detector malfunctions when hit by sunlight, and the camera would crash when I mounted the 70-200 GM.
@@benoittissier58 You can adapt all your Sony E-Mount lenses with a tiny adapter to Nikon Z-Mount including autofocus capability. Nothing is lost.
So, its nikons fault that is "too cheap" ? I wonder how a1 and r3 would score against a7r5 based on this test rules...

@@planetfun85 My impression as well after this fiasco of video.
I have the 14-30, the 24-120, and 180-600 on pre-order.. seems will be a solid trinity for an affordable price.
Yep.
I did exactly the same and no regrets whatsoever
For hybrid shooters, it’s hard to beat the Z8 at that price category.
whats hybrid shooting ?
@@nomanCyclewala , both, photo and video
It's clearly vastly superior in both features and recording abilities. Internal raw video all the way up to 8k60 full frame is class leading. I don't know of any camera in this price bracket that even comes close.
AF + MF …?
@@kevinforget549 Not to mention that Z8 user CFxpress B card, which are much faster than CFxpress A cards, also way less expensive per GB as well.
I think the 35mm 1.2 is on the verge of being released 🤩
Yap. 1.4 won't happen. The 1.8 /1.2 prime combo serves most people really well. But good news: There are 1.4 AFS lenses available, also from third party manufacturers.
I personally believe f/.4 will come in about 2 to 3 years. Lighter and cheaper than the f1.2.
The flippy screen is better on little cameras to vlog with i think because it can be pretty hard on your arms if you have a 1+KG camera at arms lenght except if you never skip arm day ^^ 1+KG may not seem that heavy but when recording for like 10+ minutes it's still too much for regular people ^^
The Sony figures is bogus ,Nikon has better screen and eve,I have both cameras .
6:05 I’ve never met a working professional photographer or filmmaker complain that their camera can’t shoot vloggys and selfys.
Excellent point

@robert As you have both A7RV and Z8/Z9, which one does tracking or detection better ?
A7r5 should have better dynamic range

"Colour science"? And Nikon has better DR? Because you said so?
And the Z8 will just get better and better with firmware updates!
Even my humble Z50 it's other camera compared when first purchased. Now it have eye continuous AF in video and very much improved AF in photo. Nikon added some small features too that improves the experience more an more, like the tally screen when filming video or more granular options

when Nikon Z8 starts to be a bestseller, suddenly the major photographic influencers start saying how much sony is better...how strange right?

Hi Chris
I am a huge fan of you both but first time I felt extremely surprised to see such contradictory statements and some lack of analysis
For example non of these cameras are vlogging camera and non of these two are selfie cameras so the point of being able to take your own shot in selfie or vlogging is not sensible
Nikon wins hands down with its stacked sensor
It’s better menu and ergonomics
It’s video capabilities
Frame rates
And in lens lineup more number doesn’t mean better , Nikon has all those that Sony has and better and on top 400 TC and 600 TC which no one has anything that can match up
Changing teleconvertor on sony while in Nikon flick of a switch
And how can you compare sony s age old dos system like menu to that of Nikon s menu layout
Also Nikon has no rolling shutter issue which Sony a7r5 has
So these are such big things that Sony cannot stand even near
Only area is AF where I agree Sony has better AF
I felt that your personal preference took over your fair analysis
"I felt extremely surprised" ... that someone could prefer a Sony camera over a Nikon.
Another note is that panning on the sony lcd is very laggy compared to when panning on the Nikon lcd while reviewing images

What about the 5 men on submersible?
Well researched. The a7RV has a curtain over the shutter as well and if I recall, it was released before the Z8.

@owenrodgers8020, Let's assume the Sony a6100 (for $700) is currently the one, whose eye AF dependability is closest above the Z9 (therefore also to the Z8), for the time being 😉
So yes, formally it is correct that currently Sony has no camera similar to how disappointingly the Z9 performs with regards to some eye AF traits 🤔
So basically, guy who is used to Nikon prefers Nikon handling and colors? Shocking!
@HappyHubris I've shot with many different systems, and out of all I've tried I prefer Nikon's in terms of color rendition.

11:20 I confirm I was very surprised by the Z8 in terms of video.. it really was great in terms of IQ, no rolling shutter, very stable, good colors (as always) and overall very smooth, including for the focus, no hunting and fairly fast to adjust
15:00 the burst mode of the Z8 is indeed amazing, it does really do the 20 fps in raw; it's game changing for many sports or animal photography.
Ergonomics and user satisfaction are so much more than a big grip.
i hate the fact I can't change the functions of the Z8 control pad to adjust things like audio level, etc. it's kind of annoying
@@stevemckenzie4731 Nikon just totally wasn't on my radar 😅
The A7V did a good job bending the drumstick and then they show a Z8 shot of an Avocet's upturned bill 😂
We're just not going to talk about how the z8 has blackout free EVF while shooting? Literally a game changer.
@@niccollsvideo EVF lag and blackout free shooting are two different subjects.
Meanwhile I'm shooting with a 1000D DSLR ... Blackout free ? What is that 😂
@chrisnichols it’s all in the wording.
Weird that build quality and fit and finish aren't considered at least in the design and handling part.
Even thought I don't shoot action and wildlife I'm choosing the Z8 over the A7R V for its video capabilities. It's the only high resolution camera except for the Z9 that shoots full width oversampled 4k/60 and I shoot everything in that mode.
People are underestimating the A7R5 for wildlife. The high resolution helps a lot with cropping and the autofocus is really good for moving subjects.
I would pick the z8 for my needs Every day of the week what a Fantastic wedding camera
This is no comparison - this was a Sony advertising video!
Indeed. Comparing on silly categories ...offcourse Sony has more lens ...
Thanks for this feedback. Very interesting to know from a store employee.
You shouldn't have any regrets with any system you buy for the most part nowadays. Kind of what feels best in the hand and maybe lens options.
Same. I love mine
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Endlessly no, but you can do a hell of a lot more than some people realize.
@@KrunoslavStifter You cannot endlessly correct a lens with software without degrading image quality or without to crop the image. Therefore optical correction is still done in the lens for premium lenses. Something Sony still doesn't understand with it's heavy focus breahting lenses.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas "Something Sony still doesn't understand with it's heavy focus breahting lenses."
Actually its more likley you don't understand the choices they made and why.
I'll be buying Z8 soon.. it's best in its price category❤❤..
Very annoying.
well with Nikon you at least stand a chance of just such an update ...
Touting the Sony battery life? Until recently, you could loose all your footage of a long clip when the Sony battery ran out. What's that worth?
So basically man hands Nikon, baby hands Sony. 😜
Add some pro lens and the baby hands becomes even worst.
Just tried it today, giant hands for nikon...
Sorry to say the Z8 is selling much better than the a7R V, where did you guys get lost?
That'd be all the Nikon users who had nothing to spend their money on for the last 5 or 6 years ...😂
Z8 better video, higher frame rates, same image quality, Nikon firmware updates
Nikon winner.

I Have The Sony A7R5 & Shoot Wildlife, Certainly Don't Have Any Problems. Awesome Camera!
Great comparison. I very much want a Z8 to replace an aging Panasonic G9 - just have to see if budget permits!
Whishful thinking of a Sony fanboy who has never ever used a Nikon camera
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I've used them before, they aren't as good as the competition, hence why I sold them. I get it though, Nikon fanboys are much like Fuji fanboys.

Z8 much much better built than the Sony and viewfinder is best I seen on any Mirrorless

I mean these two bodies are not even built for the same purpose and only similarity is price point and even so the plus points of the A7R5 over the Z8 you can count on 1 hand whilst the Nikon you need all limbs for the count up!

You've made it clear which is my next camera................The Nikon Z8
Agree. Recall shooting function?
