eleven and twelve means "one left" and "two left" (after already counted to ten, it's basically refers to the remainder after the division by 10).
of course this doesn't answer the question of why they don't follow the same pattern with other numbers, but it's probably the same reason why names of days of the week don't follow the same pattern. tuesday, wednesday, thursday and friday follow the norse mythology pattern, then saturday, sunday and monday follow the planetary deity (roman gods) pattern. and it's because the names we use today are a mix of what romans and norse call the days, they got mixed by usage over time. eleven and twelve thing probably has a similar reason, it might have became a mixed pattern by the useage of language over time. after all, language is something evolves unpredictably as masses use it, no individual cannot dictate how it will evolve in longterm.

So the Anglo-Saxon name for 12 and the numbers preceding it were much older than other numbers with the teen suffix tagged on to them.

On another note I am a teacher and I love teaching, but I would never do it in the US because it's a country that rewards the very worst kinds of people and relegates anyone with an ounce of humility and altruism to poverty, and they do it on a global scale.
