    Just a safety tip Matt, you should never use a hammer and chisel/screwdriver in this manner as there are fuel vapors all around you and the tank and 1 spark from striking metal to metal and its all over buddy. If striking it is necessary thenn use a block of hardwood or an old wooden hammer handle or piece of broomstick. Often though, striking is not necessary, just gently lever the lock ring by placing the screwdriver against the fuel outlet and one of the tabs on the ring and it should rotate relatively easy. Also always brush away any dirt or grime before removing so as not to get it in the tank. As always, a nother great vid mate. Cheers.

      ***** True, but the majority of non trade certified DIY'ers would not own a brass punch , nor deem it worth the expense for a tool they probably would only use once. As a trade qualified mechanic of 30+ years, I own a variety of brass tools for a number of purposes and also own the correct ring lock removal tool for this job but again, would not suggest a backyarder to take the expense of purchasing such tools when a humble piece of timber or a lever of some type if used correctly will suffice and do the job safely. Cheers.

      I just dropped my tank in my 89 xj that's been sitting with fuel in it for over 10 years and I found the rubber seat/hose on the sending unit had melted and stuck to the inside of the tank and I was just getting ready to start scraping it with a flat blade when thankfully my dad stopped me and handed me a wooden dowel lol. I knew not to light up a smoke but for some reason didn't even consider sparks from metal on metal.

      Fuel isn't that combustive, I've been doing it for years and I usually have a cigarette in my mouth while doing. While I don't recommend the cigarette obviously, using metal tools has never caused and spark sufficient enough to light the vapors.
      Side note if it were to catch fire just plug the hole with a shirt or cloth and the flame will die. Be safe and don't burn yourself 😉

I bought a new fuel pump and strainer/filter and can't seem to get it to stay on securely without it falling off once it's in the tank, it just sort've sits on the end of the pump not very securely.

    I have a quick question. I have a 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis GS. the fuel gauge does not work, I know its a faulty float. When I go to the auto store, the only pump assembly that it suggests is one without a float; how will this one work for my car? just fyi, I have the fuel pump hanger assembly in the gas tank. Now, the fuel pump for a 1991 is the fuel pump I need. Any thoughts on why the computer might suggest a fuel pump that is clearly not the one I need? Thanks.

    Pretty sure my 1996 XJ has that setup. Fuel filter is external and the last time I was up in there it looked like the fuel pump access was in front top of tank.
    They changed that either later in 1996 or at the beginning of the 1997 model year, iirc.

    I have a check engine light and got it hooked up to a scanner that gave a 0462 code. I replaced the fuel lever sensor but the check engine light is still on. I have taken my vehicle to two different mechanics. One said the float is bad, the other says its the cluster that's throwing the code (which doesn't make sense to me because everything else reads besides the fuel gauge) PLEASE HELP, I cannot get my vehicle registered with this issue. I'm late (Jan. 10, 2020), but I'm here! Was this fuel pump LOUD? We put a new one in mom's '91 Limited, as well as thoroughly cleaned out the tank after it sat 5 yrs. It runs good again after our tune up, but this brand new pump is so loud.

      Same here. A brand new pump whines so loud, it drowns out the engine from inside the car. Mechanic said some are just noisy. It's been 8 years now, pump still works fine, but is noisy. Oh well, I just turn the radio up.

  • @philwarner6604
    @philwarner6604 6 років тому +1

    If you have reduced fuel pressure but the pump still runs, you may have a bad piece of fuel line on your unit like mine did. I watched your video before digging into my 90 Jeep Cherokee Limited's fuel pump which was putting out just 15 PSI making the engine run like crap with no power. I removed the fuel line from the pump outlet, added a length of fuel line into a gas can, and jumped the fuel relay socket to drain the tank. Then I wrapped the end of a big screw driver with several layers of electrical tape and used it and a hammer to loosen the locking ring and nothing blew up. I could not wiggle the fuel pump unit all the way out of the tank hole, but did find that the short piece of 5/16 fuel line at the top of the unit had turned to mush and was leaking back into the tank reducing the pressure. I replaced that piece of fuel line, put the unit back in the tank, and then had 32 PSI at the fuel rail again and it started and ran like it should. BTW, I have found it much easier to get at the fuel pump unit if I jack up the back of the Jeep about a foot to raise the tank and also get a little more clearance between it and the axle - I use a Hi-Lift jack under the tow hitch to raise it up.

I have been troubleshooting a low fuel pressure condition on my gf's 93 XJ for about two weeks now. after replacing the injector o-rings and putting in an in-line check valve, I pulled the pump out and sure enough the 5/16 fuel line had a big split in it. you're the man.

  • @edelgado1

    Same as mine. Pump is buzzing like crazy. Pump was replaced less than 2 months ago. I fount that the XJ doesn't have a Resistor Ballast or vice versa. I have no idea where to connect a new one in case it quiets down the pump. I read people saying that the pump is ready to die, that it lasted 5 years like that, to put Transmission fluid on gas tank to lubricate (huh?), and many things. Help please.

    • @d.e.b.b5788
      @d.e.b.b5788 2 роки тому +1

      Some pumps are just noisy. The mechanic who replaced mine apologized, but said if I wanted to wait (we were 100 miles from any decent sized town) he would try to find another, but insisted that this wasn't the first noisy whining pump he's installed in a cherokee. 8 years and 50K miles later, that pump is still noisy and whining, but works fine.
