Matt, I truly love that you show what it's really like working on vehicles. Everything is not always clean and shiny and the old, rusty bolts don't always come out easy.
A trick for anyone watching this today, to get those old ribber hoses off the metal hose (whether its those fuel lines so something else), use a pair of big channel locks and squeeze the rubber hose an inch away from the metal hose. It will flare the rubber and free it from the metal. Super quick, super easy.
It's awesome that you don't edit out the part where youre working balls hard to get each step done, i watched all these other videos and thought i was just bad at it but no, everyone else just edits out the hard parts.
Damn Brother... I was going to joke about the removal of the filler tube cause you were struggling... but realized your working to get the job done! Trust me! I'm a Mechanic like you and I make all sorts of noises including the not so friendly words! Thanks for this!
You're crazy just like me. I removed my gas tank on an 87 bronco by myself. It was hell. Same struggle, one person heavy gas tank, knees and feet pushing haha good job.
Great editing, "none of the boring stuff" just like you say! You are my go to tutorial channel. Most of the others make me want to poke my eyes out from boredom watching 25 minutes of removing bolts, or throw up with sea sickness from super shaky camera shots. Your videos are great! I think you ought to change your zombie jeep to an economic apocalypse jeep. everyone fighting for food, water and resources when the system collapses seems more realistic. problem #1 is making it run on water or shit or homemade alcohol or something since gas will all be gone.
I find these videos very entertaining, and informational. Got to either remove and replace the main fuel tank on my J10, or just run the aux tank all the time. Main tank is one junky rusted POS. Thanks
The gas that comes out of my '96 fuel filters has actual dirt in it and looks like coffee. I figured after I changed a few it might clear up... Just changed it again this week... now I feel comfortable dropping the tank... Thanks!
Damn man you sound like me, moaning, groaning and cursing under the darn thing....love it ! I've gotta drop my tank so I can do some frame rail repair. Thanks for showing how. Northeast road salt is a killer here in PA !
Had someone tell me that this was gonna be extremely hard, I thought otherwise. Looked at your video just Incase and you gave me a few tips like the fuel intake lines I would've been tugging and tugging on lol. But anyway you proved my point and my tank is down thank you
thanks brother for this video, i am more interested in draining the fuel, without siphoning it. i have my 2001 jeep grand cherokee up on ramps in my garage, when i removed the oil pan to replace the rear main seal i found pieces of a piston skirt in the pan, the engine is a 4.0 and i am going to try to replace the piston while the engine is still in place. i also don't want the fuel going bad so i am removing it due to the time that has gone by while my jeep has set in the garage taking up space :)
I had to cut the j bolts to get them out because they were bent and seized. Afterwards I found out new ones were $30 a piece. I guess you could use clothes line hooks in a pinch.
hey could you do a video on a 4 speed transmission not shifting into overdrive. I got my truck from a family friend and her x went thru disconnecting and unbolting shit and I never have gotten overdrive to work (highway speed sits at 4200+ rpms.) or a video on replacing machined pressed oil cooler lines would be awesome! thanks
Lacquer thinner and a fair amount of nuts and bolts even marbles can do the trick pour the stuff in and tip the tank from one side to the other and keep doing till all desired sides are cleaned up
I used liquid wrench on the tubes and connections, made it easier when rusted. Also, my Jeep had a skid plate covering the tank that was also a pain to get off because of rust and a pre-existing tow hitch. The exhaust was right in the way for two of the bolts. Not sure if every cherokee has that or because mine is a 2dr sport?
Where did you get your bigger tank from JC Whitney Quadratec or another supplier? Did the bigger tank help out ? Reinstalling the tank was it difficult?
Will I be able to use the same fuel pump with a larger tank. My 93 xj has a lot of rust in tan, and fuel pump whines really bad. My plan is to replace them at same time, and I'd like to have a larger tank.
I have a kind of strange question, can you easily get to the top rear shackle bolts with the tank removed? I have to do springs and shackles but have a 16 year old hitch attached and the bolts are in with head of the bolt inside closer to the hitch where I wont be able to slide them out I would rather not mess with the hitch. thanks
Hey, I have a bolt on hitch on one of my xj's and I am about to sell the xj and I want the hitch off, I spent a few hours one day trying and without a specialty took it almost seems impossible.. Any suggestions?
Hi Matt I have a 2006 jeep to and I am trying to remove my fuel tank. I have everything disconnected but the wire connector is on the fuel pump assembly and I cannot get it off. I have removed the red locking tab but I can not slide the connection off. Any suggestions Thanks
how can i siphon the gas out the tank. mine in full amd i need to drop it so i can put new cargo pan in. is there something in the filler neck that blocks you from being able to siphon the gas?
does anyone know how to drain the gas tank on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee sport 4x4 ? The damn gas inlet pipe does not allow a siphon hose to fit down to the gas. I even used a more thin plastic hose and it still did not fit. I don't know what the idiots who made this gas tank were thinking. The gas is at least two years old and I have to drain the tank or else I will clog the injectors. Why would anyone design a gas tank where you can't even siphon the gas out?
On my 95 bronco, I removed the filler hose completely then shoved my siphon down that into the tank. Took 3 hours to drain the 18 gallons I had in it, but it still worked.
Well after looking into this question a little more it seems like the one that comes from the Jeep factory is a skid plate but I just don't know necessarily how strong or weak it is compared to an aftermarket skid plate. I've read that some people go to junk yards for another OEM fuel tank skid plate for a lot cheaper than buying an aftermarket one but like I said I'm curious about their strength rating if they are both equal or not. Also if Jeep did put fuel tank skid plates on to appease the customers that allegedly were complaining about it not having one when the WJ first came out then why aren't more people now just getting OEM skid plates instead of aftermarket ones? I hardly ever hear people talking about getting another OEM skid plate yet lots of peope spend hundreds of dollars on the aftermarket.
Good video but someday you ought to acquire a Cherokee from the rust belt. All the things that are so straightforward on your clean Jeeps can be a nightmare when things are rusty. Like those nuts on the j-bolt. Imagine an immovable nut in a leaky gas tank zone - you don't want to torch it, you don't want to cut it because of sparks.
I'm trying to figure out how to uninstall my factory radio and put an aftermarket radio in I can't find any other videos on UA-cam... Can you help me out... Make a video
More importantly than the gas tank could you explain to me what makes this Jeep that looks a lot like my Jeep a zombie Jeep? And it must not get very much action being that there are no zombies...... so I'm going to have to say this is probably the most useless and Jeep on the planet LOL
This video is fake. It's much easier to remove a tank in my experience. Plus, the factory leaves a $1000 bill on top of every tank for you to collect. Yea yea
It was a new tank from Sunset Metal Fab. The company has since closed. The only option now is the ludicrously expensive GenRight aluminum tank now. More than twice the cost of the steel tank he installed in this video - ua-cam.com/video/Iftin3Kxrjo/v-deo.html
After 9 years of this video being made and still helping good job on ur clear and good instructions
I was going to have a shop change my tank but after watching this video I was able to do it myself. Thanks guys for the video 👍
Matt, I truly love that you show what it's really like working on vehicles. Everything is not always clean and shiny and the old, rusty bolts don't always come out easy.
Refreshing to see someone leave in the painful grunting parts of doing things like this vs editing them out so it appears painless..
A trick for anyone watching this today, to get those old ribber hoses off the metal hose (whether its those fuel lines so something else), use a pair of big channel locks and squeeze the rubber hose an inch away from the metal hose. clip in the eye yesterday , skinned knuckles and near hernia today . loved this how to .
You're crazy just like me. I removed my gas tank on an 87 bronco by myself. It was hell. Same struggle, one person heavy gas tank, knees and feet pushing haha good job.
Great demonstrating how to take out a gas tank. Big thank you for your expertise, knowledge and safety guidelines.
I was able to do this to my XJ thanks to your video. Appreciate your work dude.
This UA-cam channel is a godsend!
Great editing, "none of the boring stuff" just like you say! You are my go to tutorial channel. Just a general note. The filler tube has an anti-siphon obstruction in the tank. It’s easiest to run the Jeep dry.
Man that is some good info i had such a hard time removing my jeeps gas tank. Great info
The gas that comes out of my '96 fuel filters has actual dirt in it and looks like coffee. I figured after I changed a few it might clear up... Just changed it again this week... now I feel comfortable dropping the tank... Thanks!

Don't sound too excited or enthused now you wouldn't want nobody to mistake you actually liking doing this stuff
Had someone tell me that this was gonna be extremely hard, I thought otherwise. Looked at your video just Incase and you gave me a few tips like the fuel intake lines I would've been tugging and tugging on lol. But anyway you proved my point and my tank is down thank you
I suppose removal & installation would be just the same or similar in a '93 ZJ???
Ahhh a couple days too late. My coworker just did this, and this video would have helped a ton!!!
thanks brother for this video, i am more interested in draining the fuel, without siphoning it. i have my 2001 jeep grand cherokee up on ramps in my garage, when i removed the oil pan to replace the rear main seal i found pieces of a piston skirt in the pan, the engine is a 4.0 and i am going to try to replace the piston while the engine is still in place. i also don't want the fuel going bad so i am removing it due to the time that has gone by while my jeep has set in the garage taking up space :)
"Easy as pie"
As you're grunting and cussing your way thru the process.
I had to cut the j bolts to get them out because they were bent and seized. Afterwards I found out new ones were $30 a piece. I guess you could use clothes line hooks in a pinch.
Thanks for the video, Im stripping my Jeep for spares at the momment and this video really helped me.
Why did ur j bolts have to be so easy, mine are so stuck that I'm thinking about cutting them and getting new ones
Easy to the point .
hey could you do a video on a 4 speed transmission not shifting into overdrive. Or you could unplug the power to the pump and keep starting it until it doesn't start then take the lines off less mess
Yo, I have a question! How do you clean the gas tank on the inside?
Lacquer thinner and a fair amount of nuts and bolts even marbles can do the trick pour the stuff in and tip the tank from one side to the other and keep doing till all desired sides are cleaned up

They all do
BleepinJeep gotcha!
Where did you get your bigger tank from JC Whitney Quadratec or another supplier? Did the bigger tank help out ? Reinstalling the tank was it difficult?
Well done always.

Do you need any special tools for this? what tools did you use?
hey matt, what is the metal line you unplugged in the back attached to on the other end? mine is just wrapped around the trans cross member
Thank you so much! You have saved me a lot of time on guess work!
he gunted like a professional tennis player serving the ball to their opponent
Hey, I have a bolt on hitch on one of my xj's and I am about to sell the xj and I want the hitch off, I spent a few hours one day trying and without a specialty took it almost seems impossible.. Any suggestions?

how can i siphon the gas out the tank. mine in full amd i need to drop it so i can put new cargo pan in.
is there something in the filler neck that blocks you from being able to siphon the gas?
I figured it out on my 2000 XJ so I posted a new video. ua-cam.com/video/ADo7rrYDPPs/v-deo.html

Either pull the sending unit or Use this video to remove the tank then clean.
On my 95 bronco, I removed the filler hose completely then shoved my siphon down that into the tank. Took 3 hours to drain the 18 gallons I had in it, but it still worked.
if the WJ comes with a skid plate on the gas tank from the factory why would I need to replace it with the aftermarket one?
Idk why?

Bob Genesee No thanks! If I can, I usually spend a little more up front for a non-rusty vehicle.
This is my dilemma here in northeast PA . I wana fix a rust spot in frame but every damn thing I wana take off is rusted permanent !
Even the groans & grunts- HooYah !!
My fuel signal in my cherokee is going crazy ist full in one second and the other ist empty help i need to know how to fixed

What a crock. A couple of minutes in you’re treated to some stupid ad. I quit. Guaranteed a couple minutes after it restarts there’s another ad.
No good
Always some stupid clip
Good vid, but this isn't a Gas tank. Its a Fuel tank.
