For the converse point: rerelease that failed to be as good as the original: Dragon Quest 8. I'm sorry to the fans of the new voice, but...the new voice actor for Jessica just falls FLAT on all her emotion and sass. Her sass is what made her such a stand-out character. Listen to the voice in the 3DS rerelease of Jessica talking to her mum and going on her sassy, polite "screw you"...vs the version in the original PS2 release. The original release has SO much more personality, passion and sass! She's sassy, sarcastic, yet you still know how angry she is. You can't really tell that in the 3DS rerelease. Also, the encounters visible on the overworld map? If you just wanna explore, when you get to the boss fights, you can end up being WAY underlevelled! Sure, until I get my full party, I go underlevelled, but that's to keep my party the SAME level. Plus, there was NO point to add the new playable characters in Morrie and Red. They had their own parts in the original! Give me a direct port: Jessica's original voice back, random encounters throughout the WHOLE game, no un-needed party members...they had some cool things, like the photo stuff and other bits to track...but I see it as wrong to fundamentally change how the game works. It was a masterpiece as it was.
SMT Devil Survivor Overclocked on 3DS ate up 100 hours of my life. Still my most played 3DS game! I love the 3DS, it has such an awesome RPG catelog, especially considering you can play all those DS games.

Etrian Odyssey 4 introduced me to what is now my favourite RPG series, so I'd say that's my favourite on the 3DS, though the first Untold is very close. Disappointed it didn't get an honorable mention at least
The thing that made the bravely default games so fun for me were all the options. Don't like battling or grinding? You don't have to! Want to level up faster, get more gold? Here you go! Something too hard, or too easy? Adjust the difficulty! It's so much fun to finally be free of everything that makes rpg games feel like a chore! I put 120 hours in both, and I haven't even finished the urinal dungeons!
I would assume the main reason there isn't same sex marriage in FE Awakening is because marriage is just a game mechanic to produce children that are the combination of abilities of both parents first, and character development second.

It’s metacritic score is so low because it’s not a very good game. It was a chore to beat and maybe one of the most uninspired rpg’s I’ve ever played. It’s tedious leveling system on top of it’s poorly written story make for a grind start to finish. The soundtrack is also reparative and weak. That said the demo is good and it starts like the story is going to go somewhere exciting. It doesn’t.
Fun fact: Yoshitaka Murayama (writer/creator of Suikoden) wrote The Alliance Alive. Another fun fact: Murayama is gonna have another game in 3 years called Eiyuuden Chronicles which is a spiritual successor to Suikoden. Hope you guys support it when it comes out :)
I am always amazed at how many RPGs you played! Great selection! I personnaly find Bravely Default better than the sequel whose story was a bit disapointing (especially, all the bad guys from the first game becoming good ones).
Saddly wasn't very used at his limit, the game leaved me that feeling of "They could have done something better, a Post-Game much enjoyable and added more mechanics if the just desired to work a little more on it".
Wait a moment. At the beginning of the video you said you're not going to add ports or remakes but you added Pokémon Ultra Sun/Moon into the list. They are remakes of the original 2. Actually Bravely Default is not the first game of the series. That is Final Fantasy The 4 Heroes of Light. I LOVE Fire Emblem Awakening. Finally doing a Lunatic Classic playthrough at the moment. It's still my absolute favorite in the series, though Fire Emblem Fates is also good as well.
While I love Bravely Second, I don't think the new cast additions were too great (love what they did with the old cast tho) and the story overall was kinda...less epic/engaging? The ending of Bravely Default is something truly special to me, as are your party members in it, maybe that's why I just felt kinda really disappointed by the ending of bravely second, both in terms of difficulty and it not feeling as impactful of a finale as Bravely Default's ending fights.
I'm a little bit disappointed that Rune Factory 4 didn't make the list, but I do want to play through Poporocrois: Story of Seasons. I bought it really cheap when it was on sale on the eshop, so I'll definitely play through it once I've finished it's predecessor on PSP.
My top 5 no ports/remakes one per franchise 5 The Legend of Legacy 4 Bravely Default 3 Fire Emblem Awakening 2 Shin Megami Tensei IV 1 7th Dragon Code VFD Haven't played enough of Bravely Second,Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse,or The Alliance Alive to put them on here.
As much as a yo Kai watch fan I am, I surprisingly started to get bored at 3! Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun ride, but I felt that it was too heavy on pointless side quests for story progression. But as long as you get through those like I did YW3 is definitely the best the franchise has to offer. Also on a side note YW Blasters is a spin-off game of the Yo Kai Watch series that focuses on the Blasters side-games from the main games. And while in those games Blasters had little depth and was only somewhat interesting in multiplayer, when given a full fledged game Blasters really shines. It’s sorta structured like a monster hunter game with an emphasis on fighting big bosses (mainly after the story campaign), and getting drops to craft new and powerful equipment for your yo kai. This system works in the games favor when combined with the 4 main classes of yo kai (fighter, ranger, tank, healer) carried over from previous iterations and the already charming visual style and characters. If there’s one flaw I could list it’s that the main currency of the game is also what you use to level up characters, which isn’t a perfect balance but you can still get loads of it through boss missions. With the amount of recruitable yo kai in the game your also free to find a play style that suits you even within the 4 major roles. Overall YW Blasters is an excellent game that you check out for yourself if your a YW fan, even if the game is unfair at times.
My favorite 3ds JRPG is Etrian Odyssey Nexus . I've sunk over 150 hours on that diamond , and as soon as I finished it , I started a new playthrough on it all over again . If you haven't checked it out , you definitely should Just heads up : the game is difficult
well since you asked...two of my favorites (that weren't mentioned in this video) are: 1)Project X Zone 1/2: okay this one has a number of issues....fairly shallow battle system, limited item/money balance, battles that'll go on for like 20 minutes before piling on literally dozens more enemies (and doing this multiple times in the same battle, even), but i loooove it....such fan service. And the second one lets you equip Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey as a single support unit!
For my fave rpg + farm/craft/marry etc is rune factory 4. I loved bravely too and mario& Luigi, zelda etc but rune factory won my heart. Play the 3rd in emulation and love it so much that i ended buying 4 when i bought my 3ds. The history is amazing, i love every person in Selphia. I even cried with the history and still played after 6 years 💕 For me is my favourite Rpg in the 3ds💕💕 (My honor mention is a ds game that i wish would release a new game and is solatorobo, i really enjoy that game and fall in love with the cast💕)
small nitpick, Pokemon gen 7 is in the Alola region not Aloha...easy slip up though given that you mention the Hawaiian inspiration. and for a neat little fun fact, FE's casual mode ( which I too just love as I also hate permadeath....though I may be in a very small minority as a fan of Fates's phoenix mode ) actually debuted in the Mystery of the Emblem remake on DS that stupidly only released in Japan. Dream Team was pretty good, especially the new characters and the hilarious story. But omfg the forced gyro bs killed my interest in a second playthrough ( not to mention the incredibly awkward "3D" attacks that I rarely manage to dodge... ) I also need to give Ever Oasis a shoutout here. It's one of the best RPGs on the system and a severely underrated gem. Sadly yet another example of Nintendo bringing out a new IP and too many people ignoring it :/
Unfortunately Ever Oasis came too late to have any hope. I feel like it would shine with a switch port. Not even a remaster or remake, as it doesn't need either in any form, but just a straight up port.
I love FE12. I think it’s really interesting that it’s also the first game with a ‘My Unit’ character and with unreasonably high difficulty options. It feels like a bridge between modern FE and the older post-kaga games.
I'm with u completely on the perma death, the stress of a party member not making it to the end is a deal-breaker. It's nothing I'm proud of and effects even traditional RPGs. If I finish a boss, but one party member didn't make it? Nope. Restart. Either everyone makes it or no one does.
STELLA GLOW + FANTASY LIFE! Two of my all-time favorite games on the Nintendo 3DS. MONSTER HUNTER 4: ULTIMATE is my ultimate game in the system though.
Alliance Alive remastered is out in October. As if I didn’t have enough on my wishlist. Now as it stands Final Fantasy 8 remastered Pokemon Shield Dragon Quest XI S Ni no Kuni (getting both versions) Digimon Story Complete Alliance Alive And that’s just this year. Next year we have Final Fantasy 7 Remake Persona 5 the Royal Tales of Arise Digimon Survive Yokai Watch 1 remastered Cris Tales And I really want to play Grandia remastered at some point too. We may have had a JRPG drought most of this year but we are about to start hitting the jackpot. And I can’t wait. I’ve already started with the DQXI S demo. But I’m hoping to get the full game at Christmas. FF8 remastered though is when my drought will officially end.
As far as I know, you could improve relationships in Fire Emblem as far back as Genealogy of the Holy War. On the Super Famicom. Not just the newer ones. Loved Luminous Arc though and Roland influenced a Magus I made for a short lived Pathfinder game. I'll check out Stella Glow. I loved both Bravely games but I wasn't happy the Spell Fencer was removed in Second and a fair amount of the music was really meh. Not all but much of it, ESPECIALLY the special themes, all sounding so similar and underwhelming. Like, they couldn't have got Revo to do just two more special themes for Yew and Magnolia?
I gotta say DQ7 was pretty awesome as well and had a decent amount of content to really get your money’s worth. I watched this because I need to decide on what rpg to buy next lol :P
I'm playing Radiant Historia and Fantasy Life on 3DS. The other games I wanna get are Rune Factory 4, The Alliance Alive, Ever Oasis, Monster Hunter Stories, and Heroes of Ruin (diablo like)
I tried Alliance Alive, but I hit a brick wall early on and never actually went back to it.. Maybe I'll give it another shot since it's out on the Switch now.
1. Shin Megami Tensei IV 2. Fire Emblem Awakening 3. Etrian Odyssey V 4. Bravely Default Flying Fairy 5. Rune Factory 4 6. Pokémon X/Y or USUM 7. Stella Glow 8. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate My top. Haven't played more jrpgs on 3ds from other series or that aren't ports/remakes 😅
If we include more than a game per series and remakes/ports My list would have all of the Megami Tensei games on the top. SMT IV, Strange Journey Redux and DeSu Overclocked mainly.
I agree with you on permadeath. People try to defend it by saying that it makes you have an attachment to your characters. My counter argument to that is, I would have more of an attachment to them if they had personalities. Permadeath stops the devs from making a rounded supporting cast.
Hi David! Just watched this now and coincidentally just finished Poplocrois. I enjoyed it alot and only used the farming to raise a ton of money for weapons etc. Its weird that your numbers 10, 9, 8 and 5 are ones I have actually finished. I spent more time in Fantasy Life than any other game I think, maxing out all professions. I have the others in my backlog except Yokai 3. Alliance Alive is still shrink wrapped... I gave up opening new purchases unless I could play it immediately. Trying to get through Trails of Cold Steel before Animal Crossing hits but I doubt I'll make it. Oh well! Loved your choices - thanks!
I guess I'm not the only one who likes SMT IV Apocalypse. Also, I can't wait to play the Alliance Alive on the Switch! But what I do wish got an HD port is 7th Dragon Code VFD.
I just purchased a 3DS and I've never played any of the games. I love RPGs, so I'll be looking to pick up 3 to 5 games. Who can guide me in the right direction? I like games like Final Fantasy, Wild Arms, Shinning Force, Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, The Legend of Dragoon, Lunar and Crono Trigger. I'd appreciate some suggestions from other RPG addicts like myself. Thanks!
I love The Alliance Alive, but I guess my expectation was to big. This game have 5 small towns, a lot of characters are underdeveloped (specialy the vilains), the final boss and the last part of the game is boring. But the soundtrack is really good and I love to build my little team on my ship. 😁
no clue if either of these meet your criteria, but... Radiant Historia... Time travel done right; I felt like I was playing Steins gate level of time travel usage. Loved the short and sweet story and it was only as hard as you wanted it to be (at least my pre-ordered copy was maybe normal version did not have the exp boost items). If this is a remake or what have you my bad but I don't think it is. Octopath traveler (I think this was switch alone but if I am wrong and it counts then it should of been on the list).
This is a port free video, but I just _have_ to recommend Devil Survivor: Overclocked. It's easily become my favorite Shin Megami Tensei game of the bunch, and I consider it pretty accessible to people new to the series (as well as a good game to pick up if you've only played Persona - the story mixes the best of Persona and SMT perfectly.)
Am a big fan of Animal Crossing, have spent more than 1400 hours at New Leaf and last week I purchased Fantasy Life, totally love it everything cause is so damn cute, from this list I got the digital version of Stella Glow, a physical copy of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, Bravely Default: End Layer and Alliance Alive and it seems that I'll get ASAP my copy of Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale
Hmm, I find the 3DS RPG library a bit sad if ports and remakes are discounted (that removes many of my favourites like DQVIII and many SMT titles). Personally, I'd make an exception for ports of games that were never released in English before, like Soul Hackers. Who here actually associates Soul Hackers with the Saturn, its original system? Also, my list would definitely double-dip into certain franchises, since I wouldn't be able to come up with games from 10 totally different series, and it's not my fault that Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei games make up over half of my favourite 3DS RPGs.
Fire emblem casual mode came in the gba era, not in all games, but I think one, so I’m going to question the playing the previous entries. Fire emblem ds remakes also have the functionality of casual.
still waiting for bravely third, it's been said on record it is coming, just a shame now it seems there's no point in saving saved data for second for a future release.
@@jesushuerta4379 if 2 has something for being able to read the 3ds data great, but i wonder if the cliff-hanger from second will get more detail. default and 2 may go final fantasy rout and have no connections, all we can do is see.
@@danieldowdle5324 gotcha, I just listened to it in Japanese and it's pronounced Po-po-lo-cro-is. It looked like two different words from two different languages put together. Cause Popolo is Hawaiian and Crois if French. But I got it now😀
Alliance Alive. Never heard of it. Perhaps I should check it out. If I had to pick a Fire Emblem, I'd pick Fire Emblem: Conquest over Awakening any day. But as you can imagine, I'm not someone who plays on Phoenix Mode. But hey, that's fine. I just like my Fire Emblems hard. :) Pokémon USUM are definitely miles above SuMo. I just wished I had never played SuMo before... As for Apocalypse, I really want to play it, but I feel I should finish all the routes in regular IV first and that takes a while haha. Bravery Default and Second are definitely amazing. The Job system is great and it allows for so many customizations, it's really cool. Great list. :)
So far, my favourite 3DS turn-based RPGs, except Fantasy Life which is action RPG, are: Dragon Quest XI (Japan exclusive) Fantasy Life Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 + Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional (both Japan exclusive) Youkai Watch Return to Popolocrois (I didn't know they localised it.)
I love perma-death in Xcom, absolutely hate it in Fire Emblem. I play casual mode in fire emblem too and feel no shame about it lol The Bravely Default games have been on my backlog forever gotta give them a play through soon.
Probably because Soldiers in X-Com aren't unique (Mostly, not counting the 3 Psionics and Zhang from the DLC.) and you can replace them easily. Fire Emblem they are all unique and they are all you get.
More options is always good and people should play how they have the most fun. That being said, I personally think perma-death is what pushes fire emblem from being good to great.
I saw Popo LaCroix but honestly the fact that it wasn't SoS at all really is why I didn't want it. I was hoping for something like a more SoS style Rune Factory... I thought about getting Stella Glow once. Fantasy Life was my jam friend! DLC was worth it too. I only have one of the first Yokai Watch. Also a kitten named Yokai. Befriending Yokai irl here lol. I have the Persona 2&3 game. Awakening is a fun game. Don't they have kids though, which is a big part of getting people married? To get new units. Or am I mixing it up with a different one? I can't believe you showed classmating from Conception II at the start. Naughty. Lol. Don't ask how I know what it is though.
There are alot of great RPGs on 3DS. However, my personal favorite is *Final Fantasy Explorers* yup you heard right. At first, I hated the game. But after a bit of playing...I loved it.

Rune Factory 4? I haven't played it, but I need to
The Alliance Alive is definitely on my radar. It's on everyone's top ten 3DS Rpg list
I loved Stella Glow. I just wish it had more replayabilty. Once you beat NG+, you have seen it all. Still my #1 fav game on N3DS
I think Ever Oasis was really nice
That alliance give me golden sun vibe.
My top 5 no ports/remakes one per franchise
5 The Legend of Legacy
4 Bravely Default
3 Fire Emblem Awakening
2 Shin Megami Tensei IV
1 7th Dragon Code VFD
Haven't played enough of Bravely Second,Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse,or The Alliance Alive to put them on here.
Smt 4 is a freakng masterpiece
If you haven't checked it out , you definitely should
Just heads up : the game is difficult
well since you asked...two of my favorites (that weren't mentioned in this video) are:
1)Project X Zone 1/2: okay this one has a number of issues....fairly shallow battle system, limited item/money balance, battles that'll go on for like 20 minutes before piling on literally dozens more enemies (and doing this multiple times in the same battle, even), but i loooove it....such fan service. And the second one lets you equip Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey as a single support unit!
Shin Megami Tensei and same-sex marriage? I see you're a man of culture as well.
I even cried with the history and still played after 6 years 💕
For me is my favourite Rpg in the 3ds💕💕
(My honor mention is a ds game that i wish would release a new game and is solatorobo, i really enjoy that game and fall in love with the cast💕)
small nitpick, Pokemon gen 7 is in the Alola region not Aloha...easy slip up though given that you mention the Hawaiian inspiration. and for a neat little fun fact, FE's casual mode ( which I too just love as I also hate permadeath....though I may be in a very small minority as a fan of Fates's phoenix mode ) actually debuted in the Mystery of the Emblem remake on DS that stupidly only released in Japan.
Dream Team was pretty good, especially the new characters and the hilarious story. But omfg the forced gyro bs killed my interest in a second playthrough ( not to mention the incredibly awkward "3D" attacks that I rarely manage to dodge... )
I also need to give Ever Oasis a shoutout here.
Great to see your list, that top choice sounds very intriguing!!

I think you meant to say 2 years, not 20 lol
I'm with u completely on the perma death, the stress of a party member not making it to the end is a deal-breaker. It's nothing I'm proud of and effects even traditional RPGs. If I finish a boss, but one party member didn't make it? Nope. Restart. Either everyone makes it or no one does.
rune factory 4 is my favorite game in the history of entertainment.
Now as it stands
Final Fantasy 8 remastered
Pokemon Shield
Dragon Quest XI S
Ni no Kuni (getting both versions)
Digimon Story Complete
Alliance Alive
And that’s just this year. Next year we have
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Persona 5 the Royal
Tales of Arise
Digimon Survive
Yokai Watch 1 remastered
Cris Tales
And I really want to play Grandia remastered at some point too. We may have had a JRPG drought most of this year but we are about to start hitting the jackpot. And I can’t wait. I’ve already started with the DQXI S demo. But I’m hoping to get the full game at Christmas. FF8 remastered though is when my drought will officially end.
Yooooo I did not no popolocrois was on the 3ds.
Ayyy:D That Alliance Alive pick was solid:D
I've never played a SMT game, can I play 4 without being completely lost?
Thanks for a great video, definitely getting Alliance Alive for Switch once it hits!
I gotta say DQ7 was pretty awesome as well and had a decent amount of content to really get your money’s worth. I watched this because I need to decide on what rpg to buy next lol :P
Seeing bravely second I got to ask David: was it you who complained about bravely second pacing issues in another video?
I'm playing Radiant Historia and Fantasy Life on 3DS. The other games I wanna get are Rune Factory 4, The Alliance Alive, Ever Oasis, Monster Hunter Stories, and Heroes of Ruin (diablo like)
Davidvinc: Portable gaming is dead
Nintendo: Hold my sake'
I tried Alliance Alive, but I hit a brick wall early on and never actually went back to it.. Maybe I'll give it another shot since it's out on the Switch now.
1. Shin Megami Tensei IV
2. Fire Emblem Awakening
3. Etrian Odyssey V
4. Bravely Default Flying Fairy
5. Rune Factory 4
6. Pokémon X/Y or USUM
7. Stella Glow
8. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
My top. Haven't played more jrpgs on 3ds from other series or that aren't ports/remakes 😅
I love Bravely Default, it's so charming and beautifully crafted. Great list, but it needs more Shin Megami Tensei
It would have it if not for the one game per franchise rule for this list. :3
If we include more than a game per series and remakes/ports
My list would have all of the Megami Tensei games on the top. SMT IV, Strange Journey Redux and DeSu Overclocked mainly.
Bravely Second is better mechanically.
Default's story was so much better in every way.
Thanks!
Fantasy Life is seriously my favorite game of all time next to okami
I love The Alliance Alive, but I guess my expectation was to big. This game have 5 small towns, a lot of characters are underdeveloped (specialy the vilains), the final boss and the last part of the game is boring. But the soundtrack is really good and I love to build my little team on my ship. 😁
My issue I have most of these and struggling to find the time between my 3ds, GameCube and modded snes mini 😅🤣🙈
no clue if either of these meet your criteria, but...
Radiant Historia is a remake and was included on my Top 10 DS RPGs list, Octopath Traveler was not released on the 3DS.
I'm glad to find other people who enjoy the alliance Alive. It's a great game and i loved the pre-order bonuses the game came with
This is a port free video, but I just _have_ to recommend Devil Survivor: Overclocked.
It's easily become my favorite Shin Megami Tensei game of the bunch, and I consider it pretty accessible to people new to the series (as well as a good game to pick up if you've only played Persona - the story mixes the best of Persona and SMT perfectly.)
I was lucky enough to actually have a physical copy of Yo Kai Watch 3.
Not too bad of a list honestly. I'm surprised that someone else besides me likes the Pokemon Ultra games though XD
Thanks to this vídeo I got almost all of the ones on this list that a didn't get before . (Ps:Just now I see I only had all ports of smt.)
Yo kai watch 3 comes out the day before my birthday. I know what I'm asking for 😁
Woohoo! Fire Emblem finally made the list :D
All it took was getting rid of perma-death LOL
@@davidvinc Can't wait to see your thoughts on Three Houses at some point then :D
Am a big fan of Animal Crossing, have spent more than 1400 hours at New Leaf and last week I purchased Fantasy Life, totally love it everything cause is so damn cute, from this list I got the digital version of Stella Glow, a physical copy of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, Bravely Default: End Layer and Alliance Alive and it seems that I'll get ASAP my copy of Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale
being Team Luigi, i of course love Dream Team
No remakes huh... so why is ultra sun/moon on here if there are no remakes?
There's a patch for FE: Awakening that enables same-sex relationships. I use it and it works well, there's a Fates one too :D
So, Bravely Default 2 is coming next month. What do you thinks?
@@jesushuerta4379 if 2 has something for being able to read the 3ds data great, but i wonder if the cliff-hanger from second will get more detail. default and 2 may go final fantasy rout and have no connections, all we can do is see.
Crois is a French word, so it's pronounced like 'kwa'. So it would be Po-po-lo-kwa.
In that game they actually pronounce it the way David pronounced it though in spoken cut scenes.
Pokémon USUM are definitely miles above SuMo. I just wished I had never played SuMo before...
As for Apocalypse, I really want to play it, but I feel I should finish all the routes in regular IV first and that takes a while haha.
Bravery Default and Second are definitely amazing. The Job system is great and it allows for so many customizations, it's really cool.
Great list. :)
So far, my favourite 3DS turn-based RPGs, except Fantasy Life which is action RPG, are:
Dragon Quest XI (Japan exclusive)
Fantasy Life
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 + Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional (both Japan exclusive)
Youkai Watch
Return to Popolocrois (I didn't know they localised it.)
I love perma-death in Xcom, absolutely hate it in Fire Emblem. I play casual mode in fire emblem too and feel no shame about it lol
The Bravely Default games have been on my backlog forever gotta give them a play through soon.
They are truly great.
Fantasy Life is seriously underappreciated. I buried over 200 hours in that game. It was awesome.
Fantasy life 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Not a single etrian odyssey?!!
Why is gamigami like a lovable dr robotnik
No Rune Factory 4???? Tuts
Good list 👌👍
I have it did the monk class till the end just about. Now it is op against enemies weak to light
You forgot to mention the Alliance Alive was made by Team Suikoden.
