Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 was my first EO game and I think the Untold games are ideal entry points into the series. I think if I had started with a mainline EO, the lack of story would leave me unmotivated to learn the mechanics and nuances of the style of game and I doubt I would get very far before shelving it. The story in Untold 2 had me interested enough to keep going and realize how fun the game can be. It also has the option to play the game the classic way with player-made characters and less story as well, so you can get the best of both worlds for the price of one game.
I started with the 4th game. I believe that was the game that started the systems that were seen in the the remakes that were released after it. It had a decent enough story to make me want to finish it. Only thing is the endgame content is a little lacking but what’s there is challenging enough and a good end to the game
That was the arguably the best in the series! Finished both EOU1 and 2 both story mode and classic (no story) modes, they were just so good but the café system in 2 just made it the GOAT of the series. I tried playing them first on ds but could never get into it. I thought I just wasn't into first person dungeon crawlers (it's my first ever game in the genre). It was years after that before I tried to give it another go but on the 3ds this time and surprisingly, I got hooked! I tried IV, but it was so friggin' slow and clunky compared to EOU1 & 2 that I could never play it for more than 10 hours no matter how much I tried to get back into it. V and Nexus are pretty good too!
Can’t understand the love for SoV. Its a fully stripped down Fire Emblem game. Removal of the weapon triangle, split classes, offers fewer class options in general, no pair up or stance mechanics. The levels themselves are slow, empty and utterly lacking in original mechanics. The gameplay additions are superficial, gimicky or sleazy (regarding the micro transactions). The 3D dungeons are shallow, mostly rewarding exploration with endless food items, their main feature being quick, watered down (and much less strategic) battles. Same for the point and click sections, which feel like an afterthought. The story is forgettable too, with its two main characters barely interacting with each other until the finale. Contrast with Sacred Stones’ much better handling of split paths. It’s a terrible game honestly, and I think its appeal is purely due to its strong aesthetic and voice acting. Which is not a good reason to sing it’s praises.
@@VideoGuy232We’ve got to look at the source material to understand what kind of game this was meant to be. A love letter to classic fire emblem. Literally a remake of the 2nd game. A game where you’ve got split paths, limited units with access to usually one type of weapon anyway. Making them locked to their weapon. (Which I prefer but I understand wanting more customization.) From a story perspective it makes much more sense why I can’t continually re-class. Most new mechanics wouldn’t mesh well in an older game which is why they were left out. This game wasn’t designed around a weapon triangle, it wasn’t designed around a cheap mechanic like pair up, and it wasn’t designed with the best stages either. (Especially Celica’s route.) I do think the strengths are still present that it stands as a stark contrast to newer FE games. I actually feel like each character has life, a reason for being on the battlefield, and some form of uniqueness, their respective stats/classes match that. You have a ragtag group that is the resistance, and you have a very compelling story. The fact that Alm and Celica have rare meetings makes it that much better when they do interact. They also have different goals which makes sense that they wouldn’t interact much. While I agree that the point and click section isn’t my favorite it adds flavor text, world building, and detail that you just wouldn’t have otherwise. Exploring a little town like engage or 3H may have mitigated the issue, but I find walking around an empty space with a few npcs is less enjoyable honestly. The pro for these sections is how quickly you can navigate them and get back to the story which has wonderful pacing. The story does carry a lot of the weight, I won’t argue. The art direction and voice acting are also wonderful. (As you’ve said.) All this to say, OG Fire Emblem may not be your cup of tea. That’s alright. However to say it’s a terrible game is unfair and honestly just not true. Even if it were actually bad - let other people enjoy things they like :)
@@andrewjohnson7703 That’s a lot of text without saying much. Most of your points being “I like that they removed features,” and “it makes perfect narrative sense that they removed features.” The rest has nothing to do with this particular game and applies to the rest of the series for the most part. They’re all about rag tag groups, the split paths have been done before on multiple occasions, the world building has always been good in these games without the gimmicks. Every game is a “love letter,” a meaningless statement, mind you. Dungeon crawling and point and click sections don’t add anything of value to the game, because we come here to play a good SRPG, not a mediocre SRPG attached to a bad action adventure game. So fine, you enjoy that they simplified the games (something no one asked for and won’t be seen again), but you must understand that removing elements from a franchise is not as impressive as adding to it, and it’s certainly not innovation. If the older games were still up to snuff, they would either use them as templates for the modern games, re release them, or people would just go and play the originals. But they don’t, because they are antiquated. The weapon triangle is the defining feature of modern FE games, and is what gives them their tactical depth and allows them to stand above their contemporaries, elements that are sorely missed in SoV. Instead, SoV is content to inflate its difficulty with imbalanced archer classes picking at you from choke points, or forcing you to move a couple squares at a time across vast maps while contending with endlessly respawning/teleporting enemies. It’s just bad game design. I’m sure it was considered innovative when it first released over 25 years ago. But we’ve since developed well past that. When you have games that see Intelligent Systems working tirelessly to push what the genre can provide, and crafting detailed levels and mechanics, going and playing something like SoV is frankly embarrassing. Shadow Dragon, the other handheld remake, actually bothered to improve on the original gameplay and make it accessible for a modern audience. Enemy spawns were adjusted, the triangle was implemented. Yet it gets a massive amount of hate, even though there was more effort behind it than something like SoV. Fire emblem SoV is among the lowest rated games in the franchise from a critical standpoint. It also sold less than a third as well as its two predecessors on the system. Yet a very vocal minority hypes it up (while denouncing the other 3DS entries), and it’s simply false advertising. There’s no reason to play SoV when you can play FE Awakening or Fates. They’re much better games. And honestly? Any other modern FE game would do
@@VideoGuy232 My man you are really hell bent on hating a game other people like. What’s the point? You aren’t being forced to play it. Again, let people enjoy the things they enjoy. You don’t have to join. What does starting an argument with a stranger on the internet accomplish? You can be a FE fan and dislike SoV. I can be a FE fan and like SoV. I’ll play it and enjoy it while you can ignore it. Wish you the best out there man.
@@andrewjohnson7703 I decided to finish it fairly recently because it was recommended to me, and because of the praise it gets online. I didn’t make it too far my first playthrough so I figured I’d give it another go. And as expected, it was a disappointing experience. So offering my opinion is cathartic in that sense. And could also save someone the time of buying it. I’m not forbidding anyone from enjoying anything. I don’t think that’s even possible. I’m giving my opinion like the OP gave theirs and you gave yours. Just because it’s negative doesn’t mean it isn’t worth sharing. Sorry if you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it. As a side note, I’d argue that a negative opinion with reasoning is worth significantly more than a positive one without it. And there are absolutely tons of the latter. I personally enjoy hearing a negative review of something I like because it allows me to better view it through a critical lens, and thus better appreciate what I enjoy about it. Just some food for thought
Amazing video as ever ❤ Currently playing Bravely Default atm around 15hrs in so far. An atlas game we never got that I always hoped for was a new Trauma Center game on the 3ds would have been great with the 3d effect. I boot up the Wii to play those games every so often.
The Alliance Alive HD does have a physical PAL release, for both the Switch and PS4. I got mine at Game Spain so I don't know about other countries but that one works in english just fine :)
I wish DQ5 was in 3ds form. It was an amazing game on the DS . Another great console. The 3ds is amazing and I bought another battery for it so I can play it for another decade
The only "bad" thing that u could say about bravely second is that is kinda unbalanced, I managed to make my party extremely overpowered, so much that I oneshoted every boss after a certain point without been overleved. Its really fun tho, lots of customization and so many ways to build ur characters
Damn son, I hadn't looked at your sub count and how many videos you had released. I know people wear this phrase out, but this feels like big channel content. Very cool, keep it up
I literally never thought I’d hear “I didn’t play it because it didn’t have the 3D effect” lol I’ve never used the 3D slider once after playing with it for five mins… great list though thanks!
Jordan? ☑ Nintendo 3DS? ☑ JRPGS? ☑If only there was some VN JRPG crossover titles on 3DS, this would have been the perfect video. Hats off to the legendary console and the legendary Jordan.
I remember researching how to use an hex editor to modify a save file just to add some dlc content that were cut from the japanese version of devil survivor 2 record breaker but were still present in the code in the us version.
Actually, there’s three bravely default games the first two that you mentioned are both physical and digital but there was one digital exclusive that ties in the second game story
I have a good chunck of these games on this list including all of the Shin Megami Tensei games. I guess it would make me a avid collector of 3DS JRPGs.
Sad that Etrian Odyssey Untold 3 was never released since the system died shortly before they could get that over here. its honestly the only EO i dont own that i would have liked to have (all base games, untold 1+2 and nexus gotten). needless to say i like the series.
Hey man! A small correction from a huge Etrian Odyssey fan. :) The original Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2 are most definitely not easily accessible. Those games cost a lot now and are pretty rare. No oversaturation at all, imo)). In fact, I wish the 3SS had a EO III Untold and EO 6. Here's hoping the Switch or next Nintendo's console gets more Etrian Odyssey games.
@@ABitMoreJordan Ah, I see. Well, Untolds are vastly superior to the originals anyway with tons of new features and rebalancing. The story mode alone makes them worth it. Don't listen to those saying the story mod sucks. It doesn't. On the contrary: it's fun. And grimoires are a fun way to break the game. :)
I feel like Dragon Quest VIII did not have the 3-D effect because of just how impressive of a game it is or at least, that's how I justify it not having it in my mind because I'm one of the few people that actually like the 3-D effect?! In my opinion the two most impressive games are Resident Evil Revelations & Dragon Quest VIII, because of just how impressive the 3-D models look as well as just the graphics and gameplay in general? I think both of those games are amazing and really showed what the 3DS was capable of?! Maybe the 3-D effect got left out of DQ VIII, because they were under crunch or trying to get the game out on a deadline? But either way, I think it's an amazing game and I am currently playing it right now in 2024!!! (along with so many others because we all have a backlog now that's damn near clogged!)
"it has a good story something the main monhun lacks" oooof, that was a low strike, for real tho both stories have pretty good stories, mainline monhun 4 does have a pretty decent story line tho, still it was a nice video
Alliance Alive I thought of buying it but never did. At this point I don't really know if buying these games is worth it, due to how the prices must have spiked.
I'm sad that I can't collect for 3DS. I mean, I'll never support any dub only release (I'd never even consider playing or watching anything dubbed), and most 3DS games are dub only. The only way for me to buy these games except buying Japanese releases and use undubs on my hacked 3DS. 19:50 finally someone who appreciate 3D effect. Yeah. It's great.
@@ABitMoreJordan physically and digital. Kinda picked the outrageously high ones for digital and the ones I could afford for physical. I'd say each game ended up around $60 each out of 21 games.
I could barely force myself to finish Bravely Default (the ending was great though) but I enjoyed Bravely Second so much better! Highly recommend Bravely Second, Jordan! It's better in every way.
Played the 2nd demo years ago when it came out. Loved it so much I kept my demo save in the chance of me getting the full game in the future. Been awhile but now since I’m older and can actually afford it now I finally plan on getting in on Amazon soon
My favorite part of the Mario & Luigi mess is that they remade the 1st and 3rd game. They completely skipped Partners in Time, the 2nd game. So the entire series EXCEPT the 2nd game is on 3DS.
Still playing my Strange Journey Redux Neutral and having Neutral and Law on SMTIV waiting for me to sell my 3ds regular so I could add little cash and buy the NEW 3DS XL for better wide and stop hurting my neck
Ive never heard of someone skipping out on playing a game because it didnt have the 3D effect...youre a strange one, you know that? Not saying thats a bad thing though, its honestly interesting to see someone like the 3D effect so much (Makes me sick so i cant use it)
Honestly there was a ton of great jrpgs and probably even a lot left off. Also etrain mystery dungeon was in physical in na. Because i bought one back on release from GameStop. Unless it wasn't meant to get a copy. I tried that soccer game I bought the first one and it didn't click much with me maybe because of the lack of females in it. It's funny how much uvh they tried to make that one piece rpg a collection item with numbering the boxes to let people know what number it was when manufactured.
Sure, but I think Pokemon is so established these days they can get away with it. They were also spread out over years. Yokai was very new and they all came out within a few years. Not defending Pokemon or anything, but it's hard to swallow something so new so quickly without wearing it down.
@@ABitMoreJordan yeah I guess that makes sense. I don't like Yokai watch 3 anyway lol. But they should have just stuck with 4 games. Yokai watch 1 and the 3 versions of Yokai watch 2
I was getting soo annoyed that the majority of the channels that do list dont time stamp the games😤 its like dude no i dont want sit there and watch the entire hours of video just so i can peep a couple games and when they are 30min pluss its gets hard to scrolling the fast forward
Legend of legacy is not a must play, there is no story and it is a literal GRIND FEST I played for a straight 8 hours and barely made any progress. It also wasn't that fun either, even though the art looks cool. Not sure about Alliance Alive but it seems to have a story but the gameplay is similar so unfortunately I had to pass on it.

I tried IV, but it was so friggin' slow and clunky compared to EOU1 & 2 that I could never play it for more than 10 hours no matter how much I tried to get back into it. V and Nexus are pretty good too!
Let's get one thing straight! All the gameboys starting with the first one are NOT dead. Cool intelligent People like me will make sure of that.
Probably one of my fave handheld consoles, love the 3DS
Jumping in here to encourage Shadows of Valentina. It was my favorite 3ds fire emblem game by far.
(As you’ve said.)
All this to say, OG Fire Emblem may not be your cup of tea.
Recently started collecting some new 3DS/XLs and My sisters don’t like the 3D effect it hurts their eyes but I love it and so does my Mom surprisingly
Tales o the Abyss was the first 3DS game I ever bought. I actually got it about a year befor eI even got a 3DS, lol.
I love watching this channel grow. Keep up the good work mate
Thanks a ton!
Amazing video as ever ❤ Currently playing Bravely Default atm around 15hrs in so far. An atlas game we never got that I always hoped for was a new Trauma Center game on the 3ds would have been great with the 3d effect. I boot up the Wii to play those games every so often.
Not sure why they didn't make a new one
It has such a great rpg library
Great list! Culdcept Revolt is another big one I can think of. You could argue it's not a JRPG though.
Yeah I’d have put it in but it seemed purely a strategy game from what I gathered
I have yet to delve into the post game of Dragon Quest VII. I feel like I should have played the original on the PSX
Yeah, IMO the original was just better. I'm currently playing it on EPSXE. I refuse to play the 3ds remake. Too many unnecessary changes.
Honestly? I loved the Alliance Alive. The only RPG I recall getting engrossed in recently.
Really? I bought it a long time ago and never played it cause I heard it was bad
@@marlenapowers478 I'm not a huge RPG guy, but something about Alliance Alive really worked for me.
I have room for 3 more games on my 3ds shelf and I'm watching this video to see which games I should fill those spots with
0:45 everyone knows the best way to go is emulation 😏
The Alliance Alive HD does have a physical PAL release, for both the Switch and PS4. I got mine at Game Spain so I don't know about other countries but that one works in english just fine :)
Sure does, I have it myself. But I was talking about the 3DS version 😊
@@ABitMoreJordan my bad then 😅
I just found this channel. I’m really surprised there aren’t more subscribers.
84 essential JRPGs will probably take me the rest of my life to finish lol
I wish DQ5 was in 3ds form. It was an amazing game on the DS . Another great console. The 3ds is amazing and I bought another battery for it so I can play it for another decade
I will be getting all of these games "legally".
HSHOP GANG BABYYYYY
I hope you keep doing essential games or similar series for different systems. Love your take on these!
That's the plan!
Hey Jordan, I have another place the switch goes at home - the Office, for buying whilst doing boring work. Couch, toilet, Bed, Office 🙂
The only "bad" thing that u could say about bravely second is that is kinda unbalanced, I managed to make my party extremely overpowered, so much that I oneshoted every boss after a certain point without been overleved.
Its really fun tho, lots of customization and so many ways to build ur characters
I think balance tends to be an issue with most of their games. Including games like Octopath.
Damn son, I hadn't looked at your sub count and how many videos you had released. I know people wear this phrase out, but this feels like big channel content. Very cool, keep it up
Thanks a lot bud. Been doing YT quite a while on other channels. This is the one o enjoy the most though
EVERYONE GO BUY THE LAYTON GAMES BECAUSE AZRAN LEGACY AND VS. PHOENIX WRIGHT ARE LIKE 150 DOLLARS PHYSICAL EACH AND SKYROCKETING
If the DS has something to show. Jrpgs for the 3ds are gonna go super expensive...
Also awesome video as always Jordan
Thanks Devron!
And now some WiiU content:)) Great video BTW!
Working on it! Might be a bit after the eShop is dead though
@@ABitMoreJordan Perfect! Especially nice that it all is connected with news from @Voultar and his method of fixing "dying" WiiU systems🤟🏻
I literally never thought I’d hear “I didn’t play it because it didn’t have the 3D effect” lol I’ve never used the 3D slider once after playing with it for five mins… great list though thanks!
It's so good though!
@@ABitMoreJordan I play on a 2DS 😈😈😂
Great list! Hopefully most of these don't get super expensive after the eshop closes. I'd like to grab a few!
Jordan? ☑ Nintendo 3DS? ☑ JRPGS? ☑If only there was some VN JRPG crossover titles on 3DS, this would have been the perfect video. Hats off to the legendary console and the legendary Jordan.
no one ever would consider "legend of legacy" an essential jrpg of this era

Bro, you need to let the puns go.
Just...Let it go, let it go!
I remember researching how to use an hex editor to modify a save file just to add some dlc content that were cut from the japanese version of devil survivor 2 record breaker but were still present in the code in the us version.
Hardcore!
Actually, there’s three bravely default games the first two that you mentioned are both physical and digital but there was one digital exclusive that ties in the second game story
What's the 3rd one's title then?
No this guy does not know what he talking about pmao
Project X zone was fantastic i missed out on so many 3ds titles but i wont on the switch! 😊
I have a good chunck of these games on this list including all of the Shin Megami Tensei games. I guess it would make me a avid collector of 3DS JRPGs.
Enjoyed the video, couldn’t sleep last light do this was enjoyable
For some reason I want to replay Link between Worlds again. Even though it's not a traditional JRPG 😁😁😁
Zelda games are not RPGs
And me too, i had so much fun with a link between worlds, i really want to replay it too
18:20 Yokai Watch is still very popular in japan. Just for context.
Moco Moco Friends is a lot of fun!
Really? I’m interested in giving it a go
Finally someone who knows stella glow
Not that SmT IV apocalypse on the cover 🗿
Sad that Etrian Odyssey Untold 3 was never released since the system died shortly before they could get that over here. its honestly the only EO i dont own that i would have liked to have (all base games, untold 1+2 and nexus gotten). needless to say i like the series.
Hey man! A small correction from a huge Etrian Odyssey fan. :)
The original Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2 are most definitely not easily accessible. Those games cost a lot now and are pretty rare.
No oversaturation at all, imo)). In fact, I wish the 3SS had a EO III Untold and EO 6. Here's hoping the Switch or next Nintendo's console gets more Etrian Odyssey games.
I think when Untold releases they weren’t too expensive but I take your point
@@ABitMoreJordan Ah, I see. Well, Untolds are vastly superior to the originals anyway with tons of new features and rebalancing. The story mode alone makes them worth it. Don't listen to those saying the story mod sucks. It doesn't. On the contrary: it's fun. And grimoires are a fun way to break the game. :)
How is there not a fez emoji? Or at least a shriner driving around in a tiny car?
Whaaat… no fez emoji? What’s the world coming to?
Might try to grab digital Shin megami series going cheap before closure. Cheers.
Great video! New sub!
Thanks for the sub!
I feel like Dragon Quest VIII did not have the 3-D effect because of just how impressive of a game it is or at least, that's how I justify it not having it in my mind because I'm one of the few people that actually like the 3-D effect?!
In my opinion the two most impressive games are
Resident Evil Revelations &
Dragon Quest VIII, because of just how impressive the 3-D models look as well as just the graphics and gameplay in general? I think both of those games are amazing and really showed what the 3DS was capable of?!
Maybe the 3-D effect got left out of DQ VIII, because they were under crunch or trying to get the game out on a deadline? But either way, I think it's an amazing game and I am currently playing it right now in 2024!!!
(along with so many others because we all have a backlog now that's damn near clogged!)
"it has a good story something the main monhun lacks" oooof, that was a low strike, for real tho both stories have pretty good stories, mainline monhun 4 does have a pretty decent story line tho, still it was a nice video
Hehe, I have alliance alive on both switch and 3ds. I went with the latter.
Edit: I would like Culdcept on a later system.
Alliance Alive I thought of buying it but never did.
At this point I don't really know if buying these games is worth it, due to how the prices must have spiked.
I wish someone would do a best non RPG top list
My favourites are
1. Rune Factory 4 | 2. Fire Emblem Echoes | 3. Fire Emblem Awakening | 4. Yokai Watch 2 | 5. Fire Emblem Conquest | 6. Monster Hunter Stories
Great choices!
Rune Factory 4 is a must play
For MHgen definetly get it on switch instead if you can unless you translate XX since the 3DS never got a western port of GenUltimate.
I never had a 3Ds but now i wish i had.
But its to late fkr me to start collecting for because its to expensive now.
Yeah. It's great.
just went back and check my fire emblem games, pokemon oras and they're still alive, not dead hehe
Great list
I pretty much bought a majority of these the past few weeks because well I missed out on most of them
Digitally or physically? Prices are pretty high right now
@@ABitMoreJordan physically and digital. Kinda picked the outrageously high ones for digital and the ones I could afford for physical. I'd say each game ended up around $60 each out of 21 games.
even more essential where are you going to find the time to play this. 84 titles that each take 100-200 hours. What are you thinking??
Would love to know too
Interesting, I’m missing 11 of these well… let me find these links
TALES OF THE ABYSS MENTIONED
I could barely force myself to finish Bravely Default (the ending was great though) but I enjoyed Bravely Second so much better! Highly recommend Bravely Second, Jordan! It's better in every way.
Played the 2nd demo years ago when it came out. Loved it so much I kept my demo save in the chance of me getting the full game in the future. Been awhile but now since I’m older and can actually afford it now I finally plan on getting in on Amazon soon
When it's 84 games long and includes a 3.5/10 metacritic Langrisser......it's not an essential list.
But thank you for this exhaustive list of JRPG's
where is DQMJ3 PROFISSIONAL
My favorite part of the Mario & Luigi mess is that they remade the 1st and 3rd game. They completely skipped Partners in Time, the 2nd game. So the entire series EXCEPT the 2nd game is on 3DS.
Thanks for the video n.n
Hey Elisa!
Not saying thats a bad thing though, its honestly interesting to see someone like the 3D effect so much
(Makes me sick so i cant use it)
Monster Hunter god
Honestly there was a ton of great jrpgs and probably even a lot left off. Also etrain mystery dungeon was in physical in na. Because i bought one back on release from GameStop. Unless it wasn't meant to get a copy. I tried that soccer game I bought the first one and it didn't click much with me maybe because of the lack of females in it. It's funny how much uvh they tried to make that one piece rpg a collection item with numbering the boxes to let people know what number it was when manufactured.
My mistake, my quick google search and ebay search didn't show a NA cover.
@@ABitMoreJordan maybe the na copy had that few releases. It's not uncommon for atlus to print limited copies of their games.

You're blaming too much Yokai Watch coming out on the 3DS? But Pokemon is even crazier. 17 Pokemon games on the 3DS. Only 8 Yokai watch games

That’s one way to do it

Legend of legacy is not a must play, there is no story and it is a literal GRIND FEST I played for a straight 8 hours and barely made any progress. It also wasn't that fun either, even though the art looks cool. Not sure about Alliance Alive but it seems to have a story but the gameplay is similar so unfortunately I had to pass on it.
