So Tomura's childhood is a combination of the most tragic backstories of the series.
•He grew up admiring heroes despite not having quirk. Except he did not had a loving family to inspire him to go after his dream like Deku.
•Like Shoto, he had an abusive father, but no one to help him get trough the abuse.
•Like Eri, he had a deadly and unstable quirk that killed his family. But fell in the hands of a villain instaed of a hero.
And his father is pretty much what Kota would end up being if Deku did not saved him.

The saddest part is that him being happy with finding his grandmother is a hero made his quirk manifest itself more strongly (before it was manifesting as itchiness and dry skin when at home which is what [being in a home that is emotionally abusive] was holding him back from showing any other manifestation of the quirk) and being truly happy for awhile pushed his quirk into an evolution which we saw when he accidentally broke a bit of the ball...than the first time his father hit him made the already manifested quirk spiral out of control 🤷‍♂️
OFA already knew where this family lives so it’s not beyond him to implant this decaying quirk into a young shiguraki 🤷‍♂️

    • @mangaanimefan3089

@@saolal OFA's possible involvement in this makes this all the more tragic. There is some doubt(from me, at least) as to whether ALL the hands AFO gave Shigaraki are from his family, but if even one pair belongs to them, then that means AFO knew where to get them and that means he knew where Tenko and his family lived. Which means everything Nana did to hide her son so he'd be safe was ultimately pointless.

I get why you gravitate towards AFO being inolved in Shigaraki's backstory, but I think the entire thing has more weight if he isn't. At the end of the day, regardless of how extraordinary her reasons were, Nana abandoned her child and chose being a hero over being a mother. The idea that these are the consequences of *her* actions makes for a much more nuanced narrative.

Technically, he already has a hand in this. There is actual evidence to suggest that he gave Tenko the quirk (hasn't been confirmed yet), but it's already confirmed that she specifically left to fight AFO after he killed Nana's husband, so she left her son in order to go fight him, and AFO killed her. AFO is indirectly responsible for the way Kotaro turned out.

It´s funny that you mentioned Eri because there´s a fan theory about how Eri and Shigaraki are probably a new kind of human species that is appearing in the mha world. These evolved humans seem to have specific traits like white/gray hair, red eyes and really powerful quirks that can easily end life around them (like Eri and Shigaraki). Eri and Shigaraki´s quirks are actually quite similar as well. They both required contact and destroy living creatures in one way or another and both manifested in a abrupt and violent way through extreme pressure.

However, there´s another character that has a red eyes and white hair with an unusual power that requires contact: All for one.
And while Nine doesn´t have red eyes (but he does when he uses his original quirk, which is weather manipulation, which is another quirk able to affect the environment around him by the way), he is still a white haired character with temporary red eyes that uses what is basically a knock off version of All for one´s quirk. So maybe he was able to use it BECAUSE he was somewhat compatible to use a quirk that would normally belong to this new kind of human.

Remember, quirks are mutating with each generation, and there's an in-universe theory that it will eventually reach the point of being beyond control at a point known as the "quirk singularity."

You can find Nana's death in the OVA called All Might Rising, which was released in relation to the MHA Two Heroes movie. You can watch it on You Tube, and it's not even 3 minutes long, but it's only been subbed.
For this episode, I'm going to mention a manga moment that wasn't included, but was a part of the Tenko Origin chapter...
Since you were wondering when AFO could have possibly met Tenko as a kid (and gave him his Quirk? which is a theory I really like), there's something that the anime didn't include from the manga. There's a small scene/moment missing where an unknown man in a suit (face shadowed) dropped Tenko off at home, before Kotaro (his father) was dragging him down the hallway. If this man was AFO or connected to him, this would fit into the idea/theory you mentioned of AFO giving Tenko his Quirk.

As many problems as I have with this season… yeah, this one hit so damn hard. Yes, it’s gnarlier in the manga, but I don’t think the censorship takes away from the moment that much, and the VA is just phenomenal. It’s one of the best villain origins I’ve ever seen, where he is so empathetic but still absolutely needs to be detroit smashed out of existence because he will burn the whole world down to ashes.

I blame this season for being one of the "worst" mainly on the previous two arcs. Even with all the cut content, MVA is still an A or S tier arc in the anime (I think it's still really great overall), and the other two are about B tier. That's just me speaking objectively. Personally, this might be my third favorite season right behind 4 and 2. I loved it.

One thing to take note of is that MHA tends to have a heavy focus on Parallels. Both Shigaraki and Deku were told time and again that they could never be heroes despite it being something they wanted to do. For Deku, he was quirkless while also being bullied by Bakugo. Also nobody stopped Bakugo from being a bully simply because of his powerful quirk that can be used as a hero (which you can even see this happening in S1E2 with Bakugo being praised for his quirk despite rampantly using his quirk and setting a lot of buildings on fire whereas Deku was criticized for being the only one to help him despite having no quirk). For Shigaraki, he was told he couldn't be a hero because his father hated having a hero as a family member which would be earth-shattering for a child to be told he can't be what he wants to be. He saw his family never really helping him with his father and then after all of the events, people would ignore him thinking that a hero would come eventually to help so they didn't have to do anything. Both were victims of the current hero society in a way which also led to them being the protégé of both the best hero and worst villain.

If you want to learn more about Nana’s end, I suggest watching the short 3minute OVA “All Might’s Rising”! It is mostly about All Might and what he did leading up to his debut and his grief over Nana, but it does show Nana going up against AFO too.
Also, your theory about AFO having a part to play in the death of the Shimura family could still hold some weight! You guys talked about it towards the end, but here’s additional ammo for the theory. In one of the scenes that was cut out from the anime during this episode, a stranger in a suit drops Tenko off back home after he was playing hero outside. Its either the same day as this tragedy or a short few days before it.
It’s been a theory for awhile that it could potentially have been AFO himself and that he maybe gave Tenko the quirk, which then awakened at the worst time. It also aligns more w/ Midoriya’s parallels w/ Shigaraki: Both quirkless (presumed in Tenko’s case, because he was 5yo w/o any signs of a quirk, and it was suggested they didn’t think he would manifest one) yet looking up to All Might and wanting to be a hero, families who didn’t believe in their dream of becoming one, and being given a quirk by someone extremely powerful, etc. It turned out to be pretty fortunate for Midoriya, but for Tenko it led to the destruction of his whole life as he knew it.

This is the darkest episode in MHA. So let’s get into this character analysis.
Trumpet: This guy’s quirk is really sweet for politicians. But…it feels like the most dangerous kind of quirk. Even if it is pure support. It just makes my skin crawl seeing those people get incited to attack the league like that. And then he just plainly puts himself above Spinner. Which drives me nuts.
Spinner: This poor guy has an honest Yamcha problem. He wants to be relevant, he wants the attention, he wants to see what world is created for him to better thrive. But no matter where he turns, he just gets knocked around. And if he met Stain, even Stain I’m betting wouldn’t be too keen on his approach either. So it makes his relationship with the league SO much more understandable. He truly has no way forward without the league. Shigaraki accepted him. And now he has a bond with him over video games. Which is so sad to be so desperate for acceptance that you cling onto a sadist’s shared video game interest and let it take you to places you never would’ve gone simply because no one else would take you. It’s only one dedicated scene, but you get some SERIOUS incite into Spinner here.
Redestro: Not going to lie, this is easily the most powerful emotion quirk. There’s ones like love, shame, and others. But stress being power. That is just an excellent yet sad quirk. It doesn’t take much to build, it’s hard to get rid of, and when you spiral it just comes in such fast waves. Regardless how happy and optimistic you are. And to be a leader of an army and trying to live to your family’s reputation for over 100,000 people. No wonder this guy is so ridiculously strong. It’s not just the perfect fit, but there’s no way for him NOT to be powerful. Plus it doesn’t just boost his strength, but his size, his speed, and he can conjure it into long range attacks too. And he’s even more immune to Shigaraki’s decay more than ANYONE else he has fought other than Snatch the sand hero. But Dabi and Compress killed him in less than a minute in season 4.
And then there he is. Shigaraki aka Tenko Shimura: This man. Having the WORST mutation circumstances ever. Never turning back to any semblance of love his family gave him because they refused to be there for him when he truly needed him. And what was the catalyst? His dad freaking pushed his trauma onto the ENTIRE family. Berated them for mentioning it, locked him out of the house, and although that was only the start of the beating, it never would have improved. The dad had no parental instinct. And with the blind hatred…I won’t deny it. That’s worse than the Todoroki’s. Even the grandparents were on the down low manipulative, telling him to stop crying so they don’t cry while HE is being abused. He was just there. And didn’t get the attention he needed. Even if there were freckles of it. Like his friends letting him be All-Might, his sister being marginally caring at times, his mother caring for him in EVERY WAY BUT the abuse. Had he lived there into his teens, imagine how toxic that environment would get. It would’ve just going further. And poor Nana having no choice but to fight AFO because LITERALLY no other quirk can stand against him. The father was a spiteful asshole willing to tear apart not just his mother’s good memories but EVERYTHING she stood for. What a freak trauma or no. His resolve of going too far was VERY weak.
Let’s talk about the newest upgrade in power last. Now it’s merely a 2 finger touch trigger in his fight with Redestro and he’s gaining the bigger decay moves as time goes. I spoke of the Medusa effect from his hands. But now that we saw the puppy puddle, it’s time to say what the anime has been doing. It is not just censoring from us the viewers. But Shigaraki himself. In season 1 his decay tore off flesh like tree bark against Aizawa. That is happening EVERY TIME. Just the larger amplifications get so bloody and disgusting he has to keep blotting it out. And that’s made clear by the family slaughter. It shows the Medusa effect, but then you see the puddle of blood and people pieces. And he blows people away like the wind. There isn’t a single person on earth I can think of that their brain wouldn’t try EVERYTHING it could to blot out such a horror in real life. Even a sadist like Shigaraki. His brain is nearly fully developed if not already fully. And his brain is STILL screaming this is too much. When he used the high amplification on that group of dozens of people in the Toga episode, he immediately vomited. And knowing he remembers now means he can take it even further.
Also to make it clear for Endeavor vs the Shimura father. Endeavor was the cause of everything with his emotional habits. Shoto’s mother and siblings had no factor in adding to the toxic environment as his mom actually addressed the abuse many times and protected Shoto. And STILL was emotionally available to what he was most vulnerable to. Being a hero does not make you your father. She was driven mad yes. But it was all Endeavor never letting himself be vulnerable. Covering fear and sadness with anger. And once his emotions were dragged out from under him, was when he knew he needed to atone. And he never blamed his family for the environment. And at the VERY least, Shoto did get assets like great battle instinct and he still made his own personal choice to become a hero anyway. The father of Tenko didn’t just make a toxic environment, but he blamed it all on others up until that single hesitation which vanished INSTANTLY. Pushing his past onto everyone and punishing those that considered doing what he disliked. And it kept escalating. It was never going to get better. And no one defending him when he needed defense was just WAY worse. And his explosion wasn’t about playing hero, but SEEING A PICTURE. And it IMMEDIATELY turned into beating him. There was no rhyme or reason even to those that knew the trauma he endured. Saying she made me suffer and you knowing of her existence equates to you suffering is just not something that can ever even be GLEAMED for positive attributes.

Quirk discrimination has come up multiple times in this show, but every time there have been other characters reassuring the user that they define their quirk by how they use it. Example: Shinsou and Deku.
Shiggy got the opposite. AFO told him his personality is defined by his quirk, essentially saying he has no hope to change or be good and the only one who will ever except him is AFO. It’s no wonder he turned out the way he did. Several other characters in this show could have ended up villains if they hadn’t happened upon the right people. Shigaraki just got unlucky-no one was there to set him on the right path like everyone else, and instead he got the direct opposite. Sheer shit luck.
    Excuse me while I cry
Edit: Also I can’t quite place why but Shigaraki’s line, “Isn’t that bizarre?” line from before greatly disturbed me. I don’t get freaked out by dark backstories easily, I tend to love them. But that single line made me literally pause the show and just stare at the screen. I think maybe it has to do with how tragic it is that he KNOWS he’s messed up, and is outwardly confused by it. A lot of the time these sorts of characters (and even people in real life) don’t recognize that they have an issue/don’t realize their train of thought is nonsensical.
But Shigaraki KNOWS. He understands it’s incomprehensible that something that messed up could possibly be calming. And he VERBALLY acknowledges it in front of his allies and basically friends. Somehow that adds a whole new layer of shocking and disturbing to me.
He knows he’s messed up. He knows his thought patterns are flawed and he’s baffled by it. But he’s so far gone at this point it’s too late to turn back even if he could will himself into wanting to. Freaking hell man.

  • @EskChan19

This really emphasizes that Shigaraki is kind of a twisted Deku. Like both of them were growing up just wanting to hear someone tell them that they could be a hero. But noone ever did. Everyone just apologized and said it wasn't really their fault but noone ever just said what they needed to hear.
And then when they were at the bottom, someone came to them and told them not to worry "because I am here". All Might appeared and told Deku he could be a hero. All for One appeared and told Shigaraki that he couldn't, but he could become a villain instead.
And then both were trained to become their masters successor.

Other kids with dangerous quirks? Yeah uh... BAKUGO?! Kid literally has explosive sweat. Imagine him running around the house, working up a sweat then BAM! Bye bye dad's arm.

Twice’s clones have a mind of their own, BUT they inherit all memories until the last time they talked to twice. If twice talked to Dabi on Monday and he cloned him on Friday WITHOUT seeing Dabi tue-Thursday, then clone dabi would think it’s Monday

Definetly one of the best episodes yet.
The next one is pretty good too.
Can't wait to see how they handle next season.
I do want to make sure you got my request to check out Wolf's Rain once this season of MHA is over. Got to look it up and see if it interest ya.

I'm not too worried about next season. I can agree that this season could have been handled better, but I place most of the blame for it being one of the "worst" seasons on the first two arcs. Even with the cut content, MVA is still a great arc (I'd say A or S tier) in the anime overall, and the other two weren't even that great in the manga compared to MVA. However, that's mostly me just speaking objectively. Personally, this is probably my third favorite season right behind 4 and 2.

Even though I knew it was coming it was still said to see. Maybe its just been a while but I don't remember the blood in the manga.
I am very suspect of the whole event, especially with how quickly All For One approached Shigaraki after he fell to the streets. Ever since reading this chapter in the manga I have suspected All For One was behind it. If anyone could orchestrate that disaster it would be him. Part of this has to do with the fact he was already five when his quirk manifested. Yes, he would need contact with him, but he could of done that before hand. For all I know he has a quirk that could of caused him to black out or erase his short term memory so he wouldn't remember it. Then he could of put the house under surveillance and just waited.
The quirk wasn't fully developed right away. What they mistook for an allergy was his quirk manifesting. Shigaraki isn't immune to his own quirk, it just doesn't effect him to the same extrema. The stress his father put him under certainly exhilarated things, but knowing his father it likely would of still ended badly even if his quirk slowly got stronger. All For One has studied quirks for a very long time and it wouldn't be hard to figure out how that quirk would develop if he found it in another.
That said its still possible his quirk developed naturally and All For One had nothing to do with it, but he is still sus.

It's these few villain episodes that make me worry if I'm gonna be able to handle watching the rest of My Hero Academia. Especially this episode in particular. I'm not good with super dark stuff like this, and I almost didn't even finish season 5 after barely getting through this episode, 'cause I was afraid it would just get worse. :"D

anyone born with that kind of quirk is more likely than not gonna get a dark dark childhood, most wouldn't have been as unlucky, just think of the odds of all these things happening in a row, quirk manifesting at that time, after getting beaten before sister and mom apologise / help, the event itself was such sadness, noone helping on the street for however many hours straight, running into the worlds greatest villain. like he couldnt have done anything different, and if even ONE person had then this wouldn't have happened

Random thought. Think all for one killed nana and after all might beat him found nanas descendant and all that. But what if he used a forceful activation quirk on him instead of giving him the quirk.

I have a theory that maybe OFA gave Shigaraki the quirk without him knowing. Like on his way to school or something he brushed up against him and gave hime the power knowing this would happen. It seems way to coincidental that AFO just randomly runs into Nana's grandson after this happened.
