The irony is not lost on me. I’m a Infosec specialist and had similar with a bank when I was on a train and refused to have such a conversation in a public space (nor a private space either). The only argument for receiving such a message request is if I phone them first and got the message as a part of the conversation. But the point still stands. Banks shouldn’t cold call asking for information.

I'm lucky enough where I can walk to my bank and look somebody in the eye. I also like to use PayPal to put a wall between me and the other party. I cancelled Chase after I got a false charge for something like Uber from south America while being in the states once and when I call the fraud number to dispute it an employee argued with me about my alleged attempt to defraud the bank. I then cancelled my account which put a supervisor on the line who apologized but I told them the account was still cancelled and I would never do business with them or recommend them. The supervisor whined about but they are reversing the charge. I said anyone who would hire and retain an employee who thinks people travel half way around the world to make a single fake Uber charge isn't smart enough to handle money; click.

Be careful with doing that. If it's a scammer calling on your landline and you call the number on your card on the same phone, they can trick you by not ending the call their end. They then mimic the switchboard and you end up talking to the scanner again, not realising it's still the original call.

Young woman became incredibly defensive when I said I wouldn't answer her security questions "Of COURSE I am who 'I say I am, why wouldn't I be?" suggested to me an incredibly naive or almost arrogant lack of awareness of the current world we live in. She had a real reluctance to work with their own secure messaging system which is what I asked her to use. They know they are the bank and a more honest and upstanding person doesn't exist - so they call a customer and expect to be fully trusted. "How could anyone doubt me! I've worked here for years. Now - let's make sure you are who I think you are". Then again - if a scammer should call you - well, that's not me is it - so you shouldn't tell them anything - it's obvious. This was a common occurrence working in the insolvency field dealing with the liquidation of companies. A creditor, usually a bank or a utility, calling us wanting to know what was going on with a particular account or premises the business had operated from.
And despite telling them that we were the liquidators of the company handling their affairs they regularly tried to ask security questions, most of which we wouldn't have had the information to answer even if we wanted to. So we ended up saying we can't answer your questions and them responding that they can't continue the call without the answers, to which we'd generally respond that that's fine and you aren't going to get the information you phoned up for.

It should be the case that there is a password or passcode on record that we (the consumer) have set that the bank/utility have to confirm back to us first when they call. This should be separate to any other password and only there to allow us to confirm that we are indeed talking to someone with full access to our account. Not fool proof but it would at least help.

I've had this experience twice with my bank. Both times I said I'm not giving my details to prove I'm me, as you (the bank) rang me. Each time I contacted the bank they confirmed the contact was genuine. I advised them it was very poor practice. Whether they followed this up, I don't know.

If the bank phones with questions hang up and phone them back on a different phone and tell them someone was asking for you and if it actually was them they'll have a record of it.

Watching your video I thought it was the bank as you had no reaction otherwise. You can get clues from the way they speak, accents, words, language that it's a scam BUT, I stand by the exact same advice.....give them nothing. I've been 'lucky' so far in that my calls have been the bank and I stopped giving info out after that as one day I could fall for a scam so not having that.

Normal if you hand over a code to a fraudster the bank uses that as a reason they are no longer liable for any losses. Considering they routinely do this themselves could that then be used to make them partially to blame as now you had no reason not to believe you were dealing with the bank.

So if you do get scammed then you can claim off the bank because they did exactly what scammers do. My bank says exactly the same same and axially states the same on a written paper to tell you not answer those questions.

Yeah the bank doesn't like it when you do business overseas with certain countries. Not shits given when the government does it though.

You'll have to give us an update on how you got all your money back (well, forget this one), cancelled all the many credit cards and reclaimed your house in about three years. The best of luck!

Simple, end call and you call the bank back. Banks do suggest you do this if you push back. Simple

daniel. off topic i know, but i'd like t know your opinion on AEW. the american wrestling company last year had an event at wembley stadium, during the event backstage two wrestlers had a real scuffle. one was sacked from the compnay, one has been suspended since. now following an interview from the sacked wrestler on a podcast, AEW played the actuall wembley stadiums CCTV footage from backstage they obtained on their tv show to around 800,000 viewers and millions of people across social media . a lot of people are claiming this would breach GDPR. i would think due to it being an incident that led to someone being sacked, they are IDable and the company hyped up releasing the CCTV before hand so for financial gain they probably have breached some part of GDPR. the CCTV would be shared by wembley for legal reasons to investigate the scuffle and disciplinary follow up, but have AEW missused the CCTV footage?

Man in the middle scam. Fraudster 1 speaks to you, pretending to be bank. Fraudster 2 speaks with bank. Triggers code, or in app verification. Fraudster 1 tells you they doing this and gets you to verify in app. Bank thinks Fraudster 2 is customer. Empties account. Always hang up and call them yourselves

There is such a simple solution to this problem. An authentication method which permits both sides to safely confirm they are legit. Simple and easy, and it would make receiving phone calls from the banks 100% safe. And it would cost almost nothing to implement. But you try convincing any of them to change anything!! lol Where would you even start? lol.
