Hi! Welcome to Briones Pickleball.
My name is Jordan Briones (co-founder of PrimeTime Pickleball), and I've started this channel to provide you the best pickleball content on UA-cam. My goal (and passion) is to help you become the best player that you can be.
Slowing the ball down is an unbelievably important skill. No matter if you are a complete beginner, or if you are playing at an intermediate or high level, you MUST know how to slow the game down. It's very easy to hit the ball hard, but what takes hours and hours of practice, is how to actually slow the ball down. In this video, we talk about exactly how to do this, and the reasons why you need to be able to.

All helpful info, as usual. I would’ve loved to see you reset some real banger action from Katrina. 🤣 That’s my reality at the local courts.
We’ll be doing a lot more videos soon with real court action … 😊
Me too! The shots in play are way harder
I’ll just have to post videos of me playing against bangers……
@@BrionesPickleball I’ll take it!
Good video I have to practice this because if a ball comes at me fast I want to return it back faster . It usually doesn't work in my favor.
👍🏻👍🏻
This explains a lot of my net balls. Thx
👍🏻
Hey Jordan, excellent video. I’d like to see more of this scenario of moving through the transition zone but specifically looking for opportunities to counter attack a rather ambitious attack from the opponents at the NVZ . I hope that make sense and looking forward to more content!
Thanks Shane !
It's hard and not logical to counterattack in the transition zone.
In the transition zone you are going to be mostly on the defensive catching balls low about knee height.
From that position it is nearly impossible to go on the offensive.
Best you can hope for is giving him back a ball that drops low in his kitchen. He can't attack a low bouncing ball at his knees. And it gives you time to move forward to the NVZ line.
Absorb pace.
Drop it low and slow.
He can't attack those.
Go back to the video starting around 1:40.
The whole point of this video is summed up here. 6:44 through 6:54
Also see 5:21 through 5:37
Practice this drill beginning at 7:03 through 8:25
He answers your question specifically here.10:25

Another fantastic video! Thank you 🏓👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
another great video. this seems to be the hardest thing to learn in pb. thanks for the tips and I will keep working on it!
👍🏻
Another great video. Besides the quality of the instruction, your video, audio, and editing are first-rate. BTW, checked the lesson prices on your website and thought the prices were very fair especially if you are even half as good in person as you are in videos. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks Randy! If you’re ever in the Phoenix area, let us know!
And he IS!
Thanks, Jordan...I have to work on my paddle angle a bit
👍🏻
Excellent as usual Jordan and Katrina. So appreciate your helpful videos. On this particular one would be good to see Katrina really hiting harder/more pace and then seeing you do those same resets.
Letha Rodrigues
We’ll do more videos on resets in the future!
Great video. Thanks
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great one!!
👍🏻
Wow Jordan, you have your own dedicated pball court in your back yard! I'm so jealous...thx for informative video as usual ;)
😊
Jordan, as usual, another great lesson. I'm a big fan of your lessons and they have helped my game a lot. Love your new court...but what's with all the little green balls all over the yard...kids play area? Ha!
Yes !
I have issues with the loose grip on resets. When I loosen the grip the paddle obviously is less stable and if I don't hit right on the sweet spot the paddle wobbles and the ball doesn't come off cleanly.
it's as if the loose grip shrinks the sweet spot
1. Loose grip is 3-4 out of 10, not a 1
2. Stability issues are typically a result of not hitting the ball in the sweet spot.
Can i add, if the ball hits the edge on a reset, your shot will likely die into the net. Sweet spot hitting very important from my experience
Yes!
As always, really good practical content, explanation, and camera angle work. Question, if you're further away from the non-volley zone, does your grip pressure become a little tighter than the 3-4 you suggested when at the kitchen? Does that change?
Slightly, although the biggest change is going to be how much you lift or help it over.
Jordan, once again if someone on the kitchen line is hitting down and hard when you’re at the kitchen line, there’s no you can soften the shot and place in the kitchen. You’re better off trying to hit back hard to defeat their timing.
High level players do it all the time.
Hi Jordan, love the camera work. Angle of paddle face and grip pressure are keys for me. I find if I am super soft grip and slightly open paddle face block lands in kitchen, squeeze grip add just a little forward push and block can easily go to 3/4 depth on court. More than enough to get past opponents standing on NVZ line. Do you have any drills that you practice alternating between reset blocks and counter attack blocks that you try to hit past your opponents (I often aim in middle between opponents)
Not of right now, but that’s a great idea!
Hi Jordan, can you do a video where your opponents hit the majority of their balls to the weaker player. How do you prevent that and how can you possibly win? Thanks for your video tips...
Thanks Leslie! We hope to address this in a future video!
Balls come at you with much more pace than in this video though, Jordan but I assume these strategies will still work then. Will try them out today. Thanks for the tips.
This is how players can begin to work on slowing the ball down. The technique and strategy would be the same when slowing down really fast balls, you would be just making slight adjustments to grip pressure and how much you actually have to help/hit the ball.
QUIT spinning the paddle distracting nervous habit!
Who’s nervous? Lol
This skill is absolutely essential for beginners.
Congrats the move, the house and the new court.
Would it be possible for you to recreate or redo some of your older videos from your previous UA-cam channel?
For example, this morning I was watching 2 videos about the 3rd shot drop.
The first was how to hit a 3rd shot drop.
The second was how to know whether to "drop" or "drive" your 3rd shot.
As always, great content and instruction.
I’ll definitely be coming out with lots more content! Thanks Robert!
This is good info, but most of the time, the ball is coming at you much faster than seen here.
Lol. If you can’t control it slow, there’s no way you can control it fast.
Great video(s) Jordan, I have recommended them to many friends. Question, what is that net system? Is it the C&D?
Yes!
ua-cam.com/video/beOKJ3LZDAo/v-deo.html
I just think your message needs to more succinct, though I understand the minute payroll requirements of UA-cam - but you're boring for the first 4 minutes...
I’ll wear a cool costume next time. Lol
I disagree. Love the content of this channel. Coaches at just the right speed for me. Maybe try someone else’s content if you don’t like it
Is this court in your backyard?
Yes
You guys always seem to know exactly what shot we need to be practicing next!! Keep up the great work...
🤙🏼🤙🏼
Hey Jordan, Hope all is well with the new venture.
Using your videos for my training sessions, also have 19 Beginners in my new sessions.
Thanks you for excellent videos. Please stay safe. enjoy the play.
Thanks Bill !!
I would like to see the re-set but with really hard banging shots fired at you. I would like to add an effective re-set to my toolbox.
Watch our recent strategy video breakdowns, you will see live resets shots in action.
This is my favorite video about the bangers.
👍🏻
Thanks Jordan! Such a great lesson for all! Now if only I can train my mind to implement the maneuvers as needed. 😉
Thanks Kim! 😊😊
Right??! It’s hard to remember when your opponent is firing them at you. 😆
I just watched your video as I am a beginner and the tips and demo is exceptional. Thanks. Hope I can find more tips as I go along. Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow is that your own pickleball court in your backyard?? Awesome! Also, great tips, thanks!
Thanks Cat!
GHAAA!
This is the bane of my existence.
Trying to fight against the adrenaline from seeing the ball come at me is almost impossible.
I have got to learn how to soften my hands.
The ball is coming in fast and my reflexes take over as I grip the paddle hard trying to move it to where the ball will be. When the ball makes contact with the paddle face, I still have that reflexive fight or flight response and the death grip the goes along with the threat of a little plastic ball.
It is maddening.
I know what you mean Robert. Keep practicing !! 😎
love your instructions Jordan!!!!
Thanks!
I started playing pickle ball last week and your videos helped my game a lot. I also eat adobo to take my game to the next level 🍗 🇵🇭🤙🏽✌🏽😂
Awesome! Good source of protein! 😊
Great tips as usual... I will proceed to drill 'resets' from base line to transition zone to nvz starting with medium pace and turn up to full on hard pace to gauge how to achieve resets.
👍🏻👍🏻
Great video. I’d wish this had more examples of how to take the shot forehand. While drilling you take them all back hand but in play you used both. Thanks!
😊👍🏻
Hi Jordan
Great video. I was wondering why you didn't practice this same reset shot a little further back ? Often it is not possible for me to get half way until I've hit at least one reset from a little further back.
Hey Harry! We’ll be addressing this in a future video! 😊
Thank you for your great videos, Jordan. I work at trying to slow the ball down and am sometimes successful and sometimes at the NVZ line the ball just hits my paddle and dies. Do you think this is due to paddle angle or not enough follow through??
Almost 100% of the time, you are NOT hitting the sweet spot. If it dies off your paddle, you are hitting the edge guard somewhere.
Hi Jordan! We have been practicing what you showed when we had our lesson with you. I need to come back for another lesson and work on the backhand reset shot and full backhand swing. Resetting the shot works all of the time and is a great tip instead of attacking it and hitting it into the net, just take practice and discipline! Great Video and see you soon.
Awesome Vito !
Thank you, great stuff Jordan & Katrina. Yes, the balls at the feet are tough ones. Gotta get low...
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video and your place is looking good too. Love the fact that you have your wife helping out in these instruction videos. Would love to see some videos on dinking tactics.
Thanks Thomas !
Jordan, try to hold ur paddle with the first 3 fingers of your hand.
4 n 5th(pinky) are extended out like drinking tea.
This forces you to feel the energy fall off and you simply can't punch or poke at the ball.
BTW, how are the neighbors doing with the, "sounds" from your court??
Yes, I actually started teaching this recently. Our neighbors are great! 😎
@@BrionesPickleball
Nice, it's also a great drill for "heavy handed/hard hitting"
Dinkers...
This was very helpful. I will be practicing this with my partner.
👍🏻😊
Very nice and useful too, thanks lot 👍👌🙏🙏🙏
Most welcome 😊
How can you set up this drill with the lobster machine??
We hope to do a video on this soon !
Jordan...how do you slow the ball down when it is hit to your shoe level?
Hi Peter, you would slow it down the same way, you would just have to make some slight adjustments if the ball is hit low at your feet.
Hi Jordan, I reviewed this video again and would like to know if the transistional zone is the same as No mans land? I was told to either stay at the kitchen or baseline and stay out of the transistional zone or No mans land..
Hey Leslie, pickleball is not tennis. In doubles play, you will have to get comfortable hitting shots in the transition zone. To answer your question, it’s not possible to only be at the kitchen line or the baseline (specifically talking about playing as the serving team). You will have to work your way through the transition zone every time.
@@BrionesPickleball So there is no such thing as no man's land in pickleball?
Technically, no ! 😊
👍👍👍👍👍👍
👍🏻👍🏻🤙🏼
Love you Jordan. You're the GOAT.
😎
Great video thank you for sharing!
👍🏻👍🏻
3:12 how do we slow our partner down?
Send them this video😊
@@BrionesPickleball ahhh.. this is usually during pickup rec play with mixed partners. make them realize what banging away looses us as a team. that's a great response cause during the game I'm at a total loss on how to get them to slow it down.
👍👍👍
😊
Love your coaching. my gift is my problem? Speed. I battle my mind. trying to slow down, during a game I tend to go back to my old habits, Speed it up. Moving to more training time, not more playing time. looking back a month, I am improving, you know, just not fast enough!!! I'm looking forward to breaking through this pattern. Thanks for the help.
You can do it!
Another great and helpful video.
Thanks!
When is the next tournament you are entering so I can see this in real time action.
TBA….. 😎
@@BrionesPickleball ok, I will be waiting and watching.
Love your contents. Thanks.
Thanks Derek!
Another great video! I hope you are enjoying Arizona.
Thanks Dennis.
😊
I like your new court Jordan!
Thanks !
Sometimes when a banger hits a very fast shot , it startles me. I react reflexively but latelely I've been returning with a backhand backspin and seems to slow down the ball and the ball doesn't come up very far. Your thoughts?
That can work as long as you can get the ball down. Although you don’t need backspin to slow the ball down.
Excellent lesson Jordan!
Thanks Lulu !
This was gold.
Thanks! 😎
J I want that shirt. Take my money.
The red one? We’ll let you know when they’re available!
@@BrionesPickleball Any of the shirts will do. I like them all. Can't wait!
Beautiful court !
Thanks!
Great lesson!
Thanks!
👍
🤙🏼🤙🏼
Oh yeah first in..
That’s nice, but what did you think of the video, Ray?
@@jnnx always useful, this young man gives you the meat and potatoes and leaves everything else out. Just waiting to heal up to get out.
Thanks Ray !
I'm a newer player. I was told to never back up from NVZ. I take it this is for the purpose of drilling?
I’m not sure what you mean. Needing to slow the ball down is an important skill to have in a game, not just for drilling.
I’m also a newer player and that was drummed into me too. I believe that part of the video where Jordan was backing up was to demonstrate how to adjust the reset depending on your location within the transition zone.
It was for training purposes.
Starting at the NVZ allows him to hit the ball consistently in the kitchen with a soft touch.
If you're not playing really good players, dropping back a step or two is fine. Most rec players going to hit the ball back to you instead of trying to drop it in the kitchen. If the pace is a bit fast, that extra step back will help you return the play. If you get the advantage, get back to the kitchen line.
