She's Awake
nobody ever really leaves
I love this song. I love the scene in True Detectives where it was used SO MUCH. (You are/were the best account on Twitter). I am going to play this on a loop. I love you. You are brilliant.
Wow! This is one of the coolest songs i've heard in a while.
Structural anthropological interpretation: this is a modern-musical rendering of a classic shamanic vision quest, i.e. a temporary incarnation of the questee in her tribal totem (i.e. aquatic=hidden / ice-habiting=Inuit walrus). The 'deep dive' is acoustically perfect - bubble sounds, eardrum pressure, the voice distortion, light-to-dark-to-light cycle, accompanied by properly adjusted drum/heartbeat rhythm. Endurance limit reached at approx. 2'05'', then going into the transformative 'maximal depth' stage, with all pain thresholds broken approx. a minute later - physically accurate for ordinary human physicality. Followed by the actual 'initiation' stage (sensory hallucinations, shedding human properties) and 'ritual death' at approx. 4'10. The rest is the 'return' journey, here in the form of rapid surfacing movement - quite well done in circular acoustics (deep-dive mammals circle up to mitigate pressure gradient effects). Quite funnily, the quick breathing end journey is nicely overlaid with 'feminine climax' tones - this quest served its purpose. Genius.
Stumbled onto this after making a playlist of my favourite tracks from 'Night Country'. one track, i'm a fan for life.
music untamed... full of wild energies. storm winds racing across the ice, darkness that hides everything but the soul... f***ing brilliant!
It's the most beautiful form, and poetry above folk music. The indescribable tone is not only language, but an art of being. It is only a matter of what we perceive, and yes, it is angry. Not only is this pure vocal fire, but it is something we need to hear. I absolutely love hearing her music and her range. Tanya is beyond our common range, and we need more of her!!
Tanya Tagaq is marvelous. Here is wildness and ferocity and passion ... and it is beautiful. And I have heard her collaborations with Weave, Bjork, Buffy St.-Marie, the Kronos Quartet. All marvelous! I would love to hear her and Diamanda Galas collaborate ....
This is such a wonderful work. I lived in Bolivia and Peru for 15 years in the Altiplano. I learned Quechua and Aymara. There is a common vision of the World. I salute your work,
This scene was so badass, native women don’t play!
I picked up "Animism" back when HMV existed without having heard anything beforehand. Became my all-time favorite album, all genres included.
This is one mighty piece of work that speaks to me in volumes I can't calculate.
Beautiful!
Revisiting times long gone...❤️❤️❤️
Really enjoyed your songs since a friend introduced me last year, they really have weight and atmosphere behind them!
