The Majestic Castle of Castle Rising -does the ghost of Queen Isabella still haunt the upper floors?

- Castle Rising is a ruined medieval fortification which dates back to 1138. It has one of the largest preserved keeps in the British Isles. Queen Isabella took residence here in the 14th century and allegedly ordered the brutal murder of Edward II when she struck up an extramarital affair. Born in Paris, she acquired the name the “She Wolf of France” for her role in the fall of her husband. Queen Isabella’s reign with her lover Roger Mortimer soon crumbled as they were unpopular with the people. And in 1330 Queen Isabella’s son Edward III executed Mortimer and took back control. He spared his mother who continued to live at the castle, although it is said she wasn’t happy in later life and became mentally unstable with loneliness and grieve. She never forgave her son for the killing of her lover. Isabella is said to haunt the castle and disembodied screams have been heard. Her restless spirit has supposedly been wandering the corridors of the upper floors ever since she passed away many centuries ago. The upper floors is reputedly where the spirit of Isabella is most active. The keep forebuilding (or the infamous white room) is where Queen Isabella is believed to have spent her final days in North Norfolk before she was eventually moved to Hertford Castle where she died in 1358. A famous photo was taken in the ‘white room’ by a paranormal group claiming to have captured her apparition on film in 2016. During the 15th century the castle was used as a hunting lodge (before falling into disrepair) and by the middle of the 16th century it was derelict. Henry VIII sold the property to Thomas Howard (Duke of Norfolk) and the majority of the castle buildings were demolished. It was not until Mary and Fulke Greville Howard inherited the castle in the 19th century that efforts were made to restore the building and it remains in the Howard family today. The present owner is a descendant of William D’Albini II. He was a Norman lord who originally built the castle for his new wife, who was the widow of Henry I, nearly 900 years ago.

Yes it is a stunning building 🙂
I grew up just a few miles away from the village of Castle Rising, and was always fascinated by its castle. It's such an imposing, magnificent building and a very interesting and atmospheric place to visit. You can definitely imagine that it's haunted! Your drone footage was amazing and I loved the way you filmed the approach to the castle. We are so glad our UA-cam friend, Magenta Otter Travels introduced us. We have subscribed to your channel, and look forward to watching more of your videos!
Hi thanks very much for the comment and for subscribing. I was taken aback of the beauty of this place. It is definitely the most spectacular castle I’ve ever visited. I really enjoyed exploring the interior too which is so well preserved. I love the way it’s just been left inside and no attempts to modernise it at all like other castles I visited. A real step back in time. The upper levels with the dark corridors and the spiral staircase are very eerie. Recommend arriving early to this castle I had the whole castle to myself for the duration of the explore 🙂
This video is really well put together. This castle looks so interesting. The history To it is amazing. I would like to visit here.

@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk Next on my list "must seen"
This place would be well creepy at night.
Just a bit 😅
Isabella was badly treated from an early age by her husband Edward and his lover Hugh D`Spencer .She subsequently struck up an affair with Mortimer who was banished to France. She managed to convince Edward to let her visit her father ,who was the king of France, but returned with Mortimer and an army .Edward was imprisoned in Berkley Castle .Thrown into the oubliette and some say murdered some say he escaped. She eventually caught up with Hugh D`Spencer and he was brutally executed at Hereford .The modern day Spencer family claim hereditary from Hugh D`spencer (although I don`t know why as he was very unpleasant) but this is now considered bogus.
Appreciate the contribution Michael - complicated history for sure - thanks for your interest and watching the video 🙂
Someone took the furniture away!
Hi Wayne - yes furniture long gone but beautifully preserved otherwise - thanks for tuning in 🙂
