  • Dodge Dakota rear mount Garrett GT3788R turbo. Initial stand alone oil system test run using an RB Racing oil pump and my own oil tank design. There is a quick spool up at the 1:40 mark just for fun. The spray from the turbine exit is some water that pooled in the exhaust due to an open wastegate stub.

This is better than paying $2500 for a fancy pants "self-contained" turbo. This is awesome and im going to do this... Question what did you do to control the flow? I know these pumps can flow some oil no issues so did you use something to tone it down?

On the RB Racing pump I used an AN-10 inlet from the oil tank with an AN-6 outlet. The outlet runs to an AN-6 to AN-4 tee fitting. One leg of the tee feeds an an-4 to the turbo center bearing oil inlet, the second leg is a bypass line that dumps excess oil back to the oil tank. If I remember correctly I drilled the bypass portion of the tee to 0.1875 to get the correct flow and running pressure. Once the oil warms up the pressure levels out at about 30-35 psi with plenty of volume to keep the roller bearings happy. Journal bearing turbos would be happier with higher running pressures. RB Racing, the manufacturer of the pump was very helpful in determining the correct sizing for the bypass setup.

Nice. Considering ordering one of their pumps for a standalone system. Hows it going now?

The system has hundreds of hours on it with no issues and consistent oil pressure, as designed.

Rich Rohrich very nice design. Curious how much oil your tank holds?

Just saying if that is oil dripping out its because the oil drain coupling has to small of inner diameter.

@williamberndt Thanks Bill. Still lots more to do but it will be shredding tires and scaring old ladies before you know it :-)
