  • Will this thing ever work!
Welcome back to part 11 of the Lexus LS400 rear mount turbo project.
I fitted the new latest version of the standalone turbo oiling system, together with a good sized oil cooler and moved the oil filter head closer to the new pump.
Added a frame ready to box it all in, but in this video we come up against some problems!
on switching the engine off, oil back flows into the reservoir which then over fills it. Even after fitting two one way valves the oil still back flows.
The second problem is that the oil in the reservoir is getting pushed out of the cap and leaking.
And finally I played with the springs in the wastegate and managed to spike the boost to 9 pounds which is a crazy thing to to with a skinny rod 1UZ on totally stock management!

I really enjoy seeing your experimentation and grass roots engineering. What is your future plan for the Lexus rear mount turbo setup? I like the idea of a stand alone oil system in a rear mount turbo. I've done a low mount turbo with engine oil feed some years ago. I used one of those Exa pumps to scavenge the oil back to the rocker cover and found that it was critically important that the 'turbo sump' (wherever oil drains) has a breather to atmosphere or turbo inlet.
In a normal, engine mounted turbo setup the turbo drain is subject to the engine PCV or breathing system of the crankcase.. not the case in remote mount, so any slight pressure build up stops the turbo from draining and the pump from working properly. All the best with everything.

Thanks🙂 👍 right now the car is improving steadily, the new oil pump set up is working really well so far, you hit the nail on the head with the need for a breather, I was having all sorts of problems and leaks due to that and slack of capacity in the reservoir.
My next problem is boost control and fuelling as I'm achieving higher boost levels I'm learning out. Everything I'm doing is done as cheaply as possible as its only a bit of fun.
It's been great to learn on and as things improve hopefully I will to (welding etc)
This old beast is really not in the greatest condition and I'm no body shop guru and I've been looking around at what the future is for it.
Its nowhere near good enough for a VIP car, I like the idea of a bit of drifting but again I can't stretch to fully adjustable suspension and million dollar wheels and body kits.
So I'm left with one option really and that's to go full apocalypse wasteland drifter with it, huge tyres, lifted suspension and battle ready exo skeleton body work. At least that way I can make a wide kit out of steel and maybe make the turbo a bigger feature and run the charge pipework down the side of the car on top of a sill extension.
I'm seeing all sorts of apocalyptic drifter type visions coming.....
Thanks again for watching and your comment, it all helps with the motivation and makes it worthwhile👍

Question...pressure coming out of the return line...now ive seen a video where someone was measuring about 7psi on the return line side at full boost ...casing pressure... Im using a cheep ebay return pump and i know thia your going this route because you worried about the sump pump failing and that's legit.... Do you think were going about this wrong? Do you think there is enuff pressure to get the oil back up to the engine with out the pump? I had a experience last week ...i forgot to turn the pump on and drove around the block like a asshole half way around the block i realized my pump was off ...i had a oh shit moment ...so wat happend was the oil came out threw the breather(path of least resistance) about two quarts pumped out ...well i cleaned it up and poured oil in the engine and got lucky .. So what do you think? Cause if there is enuff pressure built by the turbo casing to bring this oil back up then im all in for loosing the pump all together.. On another note .. Videos are awesome...

Sorry dude missed this completely, the problem with that is at idle the oil would just pool up in the turbo drain and then be pushed out through the turbo seals and smoke bad. I dont think there's enough pressure to return the oil before its pushed out of the seals.

Hey man i took down the garbage mods channel as i just kinda lost interest in finishing the build the way i planned, i still have the lexELmeano (trunkless ls400) but i wont be able to finish it for a bit, im still watching ur progress tho, this is awesome
