  • Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Wednesday that the European Union's imposition of additional tariffs on electric vehicle imports was "typical protectionism." He also said the levies would violate "market economy principles" as well as disrupt trade cooperation between Beijing and Brussels. The EU's tariffs on EVs shipped from China are due to start in July.

Yea why would you want cars that can be controlled from country of origin and that have inferior safety and dangerous battery’s. Shouldn’t be sold at all in the eu,uk or the states.

Here is a novel idea. Have the Chinese auto companies build the vehicles in Europe with requirement that the factories be owned by a joint venture company that is at least 51% owned by a European firm.

OmG! Exactly, and any subsidies should be open to all companies domestic or foreign owned!!!

You underestimate China's advantage (whole supply chain (rare earth...), work ethic, digitalization (AI, autonomous), Lidar tech...). China gave out to Indonesia the blueprint of HSR (High Speed Rail). Do you think Indonesia will compete with China anytime soon in this regard? Even if Chinese auto work with their western counterparts, and those can learn from China, but eventually they can't move fast enough to surpass China. Germans are thinking of 4-day workweek.... 😉 Europeans are used to relaxed lifestyle for too long.

All imports, including cars, into China are subjected to VAT+Tariffs which is also a form of economic protectionism..cant fault others for doing the same!

Meanwhile China allows joinventure factories to manufacture within China which can even enjoy all the subsidies I'f any. Can Europe?

It's all part of normal trade dealings, the west placed tariffs on Japan as well and as the cost of labor in Japan went up over time the Tariffs disappeared, the same will be for China. As EVs are new and Government funded and labor is cheap countries will protect their local industry but in the next 10-20 years, China's labor cost will rise, and balance out with the west leading to the Tariffs slowly going away. Very very normal.

China has the largest market in terms of consumerism, chinese ev makers couldn't give a rat's arse about sales in europe or US, China, please bring on those tarriffs !!!

Yeah! The kettle calling the pot black. In order to do business in China, China requires you to partner with a domestic company and share your technologies.

It is not protectionism but we need to ensure level playing ground. Also the people should not support a regime that supports Putin in his attack on Europe

Tesla is 100% foreign own. And If you ask Volkswagen, you will find out they didn't even teach Chinese how to make screws when they entered China. All parts had to be imported from German.
