Sir, I have been listening to you and the other immediate family players for over 50 years. Now I’m in the twilight of my time here and wanted to let you know that you have recorded most of the soundtrack to my life. Thank You
Sir, how can you be so amazing yet be so "every man" down to Earth? You're so good that you should be a jerk, yet you aren't. I'm 58, you've been in my ears for my entire life.
Forgive me Mr. Sklar, but up until I came across this video, I only knew you as the bass player with the long beard. As a musician (drummer/percussionist) myself, I always had an appreciation for the musicians behind the artist. I recall as a kid seeing you in music videos and live performances on tv during the 80s and 90s, and I was always drawn to you but never knew your name. You just had that cool factor and you wore it well. Fast foward to 2018, I went to see Phil Collins live for the first time at Brooklyn's Barclay's center, and when the band came on I jumped out of my seat and yelled out to my brother who was with me, "oh my God the bass player with the long beard." He then looked at me with a confused look and said "huh?" He had no idea what the hell I was talking about. I was so star strucked with you more than I was with Phil, but I also remember feeling embarrassed because I didn't know you by your name and only by face. It was really nice seeing you after all these years and to know that you are well. I feel really guilty that I never bothered to google you, however today, I finally put a name to the legendary bass player with the long beard. Thank you Mr. Leland Sklar for all that you do. I enjoyed the video.
I just googled, Long Bearded Bass Player, and without doubt, Google knows exactly who you are looking for! Google brings up a very large info box for Leland Bruce Sklar. I have not seen Google use this specific format before. He explains the origin of the beard in his "Smilin' Face" video. ua-cam.com/video/xxeKH3G9dTY/v-deo.html
Watching this for the first time in 2024. Great playing! I love this song. So weird to hear about the COVID stuff. 2020 gave the whole world collective PTSD.
Hello, Mr. Sklar, I'm Mariana, from Argentina (Buenos Aires). I'm 32, and saw you for the first time when I was 19, when you were playing with Toto (Falling in between tour)...last time I saw you (second) was with Phil, not long ago. I want to thank you so much for what you do. You've done everything, played with almost everyone...for that, you are my favorite bass player. Hope to meet you someday. Greetings.
Oh man, I have so much respect for you as a musician, and after seeing you on your channel that respect expands on a personal level. It is a total joy seeing you play as well as listening to your words. Thank you and God bless you Sir Sklar
Well, thank you. I got SO sick of hearing Rosanna SO often when it was on the radio, and here it is all fresh, live and dressed up for the stage, even wearing a bass solo!
Leland.... you have no idea the pleasure you cause to me , earing you playing the bass on such natural & beautiful way..... Please don't stop doing videos like this.
Def my fav Toto song. Outstanding live version of this tune. Reminds me of growing up in the 70's & 80's with all my friends in junior high and high school.
Loved this rendition of the song... breaking into Birdland on a jam is BAAAAAAADAAASSSSSS!!! There are bass players and then there's LE! great player, great human. Bravo!!!
Simply put this is one of the best played bass parts - ever!! The arrangement is beyond brilliant, but it takes the most elite, of the elite, players to bring it to life! You, Lee, are such a player. Thanks for sharing this gem!
Kick ass song first. My pissed off meter just went all the way down. You saved my Tuesday my man. My head bobbing a smile on my face and my customers in the waiting room asking me to crack it up. Thank you sir #WearAMask
Lee has had a great career by any stretch of the imagination. If course he was around at the right time. Still, he's a professional thru & thru. A musician, reliable, hard working with a very amicable demeanour... Nice that he shares his experiences with us - we're lucky!
Holy sh*t.......after watching this today, I just had to go watch the live clip from the 2007 show in Paris. You know, Lee is so humble and down to earth, and comes into our homes and chats with us every day...it’s easy to forget what a star performer he is onstage. The jam at the end of Rosanna was just so cool to watch.......I feel so lucky to just hang with you....
How True-Being in a Band is such a Different Head Space, and is Such a Different experience. You just have to be in a Band. Absolutely Love It !! Thanks Leland for all these videos!!
Playing along with one of the best versions of songs I've heard, AND your playing along with your OWN bassline - that's some Inception mind-bending wizardry right there. Awesome as always.
I don't think I've ever heard such an incredible musician who is so humble and funny! Love you, Mr. Sklar! This is one of my favorite posts of his so far, what great bass playing......
@Michelle Misanthrope Yeah, this guy playing like this will never have a decades long career as a professional bass player playing with the biggest bands.
I'm trying to convince my sweetie that she knows your work, that you played on everything, etc. I showed her your impressive wiki page. I played her this video, her response, "Yeah, he looks familiar, he needs to sweep his floor." I really love these videos. What could be better than hanging with the coolest cat in the neighborhood while he tells the coolest stories and jams with the coolest records? Thank you Leland. Please, ramble all you want.
Never heard that intro before. F'n great! I played Rosanna in a cover band. It was fun to play whether it was the last time or the first time. it was always a winner with the entire audience.
Leland, my man, your energy is infectious, as is your joy of the instrument and music in general, and what you brought to Toto was an added intensity and solid dynamic, and that’s saying something, eh? I was a touring musician for many years, and to establish that unspoken synergy and telepathy with other musicians, and then transfer that to the audience, is really such a rare treat, and a natural opiate that becomes as addictive. I was blessed to meet Luke at a guitar workshop in Boston a while ago, and my first two questions were, “What was it like to work with Jeff (Porcaro)” and “How did you manage to snag Leland?” ... he got a real kick out of the second one, and told an anecdote about meeting and working with you that was nothing less than effusive, and even more enjoyable - suffice it to say he thinks the world of you, both as a musician and a human, and his opinion carries much weight with me. Blessings to you, Sir, and thank you for being the epitome of inspiration for me - I choose my heroes well!
Thanks! Always been a personal favourite song and great to see/hear the way that ‘…all the way….’ bass part’s played by the dude that laid it down. 🕺🏻🎸🍻
after years , i still find myself looking at the fret-board as I play, watching you, eyes closed and still locating your notes, truly remarkable. your an awesome bassist, I would love to have you by my side,, thanks for sharing.
I was lucky enough to make Leland’s acquaintance working in the landscape industry and actually did some work at his home. Even though I was awestruck knowing who he was and his body of work. I can attest to his warm and welcoming demeanor. Really an Everyman. Glad to see he is still doing so well. The Paris concert he did with Toto ranks high with me.
OH. MY. GOD!! If I had heard this in concert, I would have LOST IT LIKE A TEENY-BOPPER AT A BEATLES CONCERT!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 And the moment I heard that 'Birdland' riff, I would have freakin hit the ground like I was hit by the holy ghost!
This had to be the Falling in Between Tour in Paris 2007. My all time FAVORITE EVER concert, tho sad about hearing Mike being sick at the time but floored when Luke announced it only took you 3 days or so to learn the whole gig that night! You’ve been a “ROCK STAR” to me ever since!!! ⭐️
Toto was introduced to me by a friend on their album Falling in Between. Their line up during that live album is superb and eversince I heard that album, toto became part of my favorite bands. Man, I can't forget it! Nothing does this version better than the man himself! My goodness! Thank you for this, sir Leland.
At last! Thank you, Leland, I've been waiting for this one. Only the best ever live version of Rosanna. Period! Superb jazzy intro, killer vocals, that rhythm section and keys and a middle section to die for when Weather Report meets Little Feat. All wrapped up with Luke showing just about every other widdly-fret-merchant how it's done. (All in my humble opinion, of course :) )
Every time I hear you play, I appreciate what an incredibly good musician you are above all - amazingly respectful of the music and fully in control of your instrument and its ability to help to convey that music to our ears, for our enjoyment. You're such an ace!
Not for nothing brother Leland, but watching you play the electric bass to your live performance reminds me of how nostalgia is so joyful and therapeutic. You, amongst other musicians, are the reason music is indeed timeless and universal. Thank you.
I started studying bass at the age of 46.....Somehow, your basslines I used to listen to trough the years are clear in my mind and very inspiring...Thanks Master Sklar!
Oh man that was some beautiful bass playing right there! I love the jazzy imrov breakdown part. As a guitar player who hasn't done much with the bass .. watching great bass players is such a treat.
Hi Lee! I really liked that opening with the smooth jazzier chords leading into the regular version of the tune. NICE!!! Just had to comment on that. Now I'm going to go back and listen to the rest of the song and then enjoy the conversational part of your post today. Oh wow! Now I'm hearing the instrumental solo parts of the song. Those bass parts are primo!!!!! Take care my friend.
Awesome show...watched it over and over. Amazing players all around. I can't really fathom learning this whole show in 5 days, especially without charts. Leland's a pro's pro for sure. Simon's snare is like a gunshot...sweet
TBH I love the flexibility of that song! I wish I had been able to see this version live. As a drummer this is really one of the hardest and best grooves practice, along with Bonham's "Fool In The Rain" and a couple other Purdue shuffles. And this song was magical from the moment it was tracked. Amazing.
The reason you got that gig is a sad story, but I’m very happy that you were the person they called to fill Mike’s shoes. I can’t think of anyone who would have done it better.
Always a treat to watch master musicians at work. Don't be fooled by the relaxed atmosphere Sklar performs in here, world class like it was nothing... Liked the Birdland quotes :)
always a gentleman in rhythm!! I love your jobs specially with James Taylor (when I've knew about you) and also with Phil Collins!! friendly hugs from Brasil!!!... (and good luck for this crazy war we're all in)...
I have only recently found your channel, but I have been a fan for a long time. Please keep doing these videos because they are great. If you have to wear headphones to get in the right head space, I say do it. I understand that would take a different setup/program to accomplish, but do what works for you. Much love Mr Sklar and keep making amazing basslines
I jammed w/ a lot of the PH musicians in Asia; they really appreciated the musicianship of Toto as the best of the musicianship. So, this is Leland's way of showing you he da' man.
I saw you on one of my Toto DVD's. And I was a fan. You really show the fun on the stage. You playing on the stage and youtube is so inspiring. Hopefully youtube will advise you to even more ppl. Keep up the nice youtube contributes.
I've been subscribed for a few months now and its become almost addictive to click on to your channel. It always results in me applauding your performance. You are a fine musician Le and from what I hear from your commentaries on life in general, you are a fine human being. Solidarity, Mr Sklar.
This version of "Rossana" is without doubt the very best. Lukather is one of the best jazz guitarists in the world and is an often-overlooked vocalist. Despite any issues that Bobby Kimball may have had with the band, his voice rings electric here, and carries with it memories of my teenage years. You, Mr. Sklar, are a national treasure. My brother has been a professional bass player, singer, and songwriter for decades and always points to you as one of his greatest musical influences. I have seen you live and in person with James Taylor, and I always find myself searching for your subtle and meaningful undertones during your beautiful dance within the bass clef. What a wonderful craftsman and artist you are, so effortless in your musicality, never seeking the limelight, all the while shining with such utter joy as you play with flowing long white beard. I am grateful for your contributions to this troubled world. God bless and keep you always Leland Sklar.
When every artist is the best and every gig is a highlight, that is when you know you have a heck of a career. Congrats Mr. Sklar

I really hope this comment was a joke? You DO know he is a seasoned professional musician AND played for TOTO right?
Jay Knapp - I didn’t know that!
@@jayknapp5548 it was an obvious joke...
