- Hooniverse.com's Jeff Glucker travels to Northern California to meet up with the latest version of a popular Pleiades-badge wearing, all-wheel-drive, rally rocket. It's the 2015 Subaru WRX STI, and it's time to meet it and put it through its paces.
This doesn't just mean some time on the street, however, as the day also includes some hot laps at Laguna Seca.
Love the new design, and for anyone who hasn't ever driven one, these are the best handling cars in the world in my books.
I love mine!
It actually looks beautiful in white.
Great job, Jeff! Looks like a lot of fun lapping Laguna Seca. Looks good in red.
Thank you
Good job Hooniverse. The Video quality was fantastic and the commentary was not bad at all. You probably are well aware of this, but I'll throw it out there anyway...Just ignore the idiotic youtube trolls and haters. It's not your fault their mommy doesn't love them. Cheers, mate.
thumbs up
This video is very well done, Jeff. Good job.
When he said "The Wine Country" I thought he talked about France, not Northern Cali. Damn Americans.
Great wine happens all across the planet... if you stick to one area of the world, you're missing out on some seriously delicious bottles.
Don't be a hater just because California wines are 10x better than French wines for 1/10th the price.
Says the pleb that never tasted Bordeaux or Champagne wines.
Ultrakillerism FYI, we're still able to get those here in the states. International wine competitions don't lie though. A lot of the best wines do in fact come from California. Time after time, year over year. But as Jeff Glucker mentioned, great wines DO in fact come from all over the world. Shouldn't be so closed minded.
Ultrakillerism Actually, I was married in a winery... I've tried wines from all over the world, and I love champagne.
Still, if you're not drinking Central Coast California reds, you're missing out... massively.
Jesus Christ, the camera quality is amazing. I thought I was looking out of a window!
I can't believe the new Corvette gets better gas mileage than the STi or Evo. Not by a little either, but by a pretty good amount.
It's definitely growing on me but the 2002-2007 are just... nicer. In my opinion of course.
'06-'07 will always be the best. imo
Own an 06 WRX. Would really consider getting the 07sti to add to the stable. Love the reliability on my WRX.
Marc Rowe You like the STI that much? I thought the models back then were a bit unreliable. I know SUBARUWRXFAN loves the 06 model too but the newer models have better handling.
Marc Rowe You have a WRX and love the reliability the STI isn't exactly the same specially a used Bro'd 07 STI STAY AWAY!
John Vu i never did much research on the 07sti reliability but I've heard mixed comments on its reliability. So in all honesty im not such what to think of it. I know my 06Wrx is awesome. But im not sure about the sti reliability.
Thanks Jeff! Loved the review, especially the track time, with info about the steering rack and STi-specific manual! Almost as rocking as your Rugged Ridge video! (fuck the haters!) 😉
haha - Yeah this was our first real big video I think, in terms of views and quality.
Awesome quality. That's what a car video should look like!
I have 2011 STI, I added mods to it, and honestly enjoy driving it everyday. Ya the new one might be slightly more advanced, but I don't see the value in upgrading, it's looks as a confused "sti+Evo" blend. If you do have the chance to drive an STI, I can assure you... You won't be disappointed!
This car is a beauty. The headlights looks sexy exotic.
Honestly the design grew on me, its not bad. And plus the performance is what matters and it looks like it doesn't disappoint
This car has grown on me so much.
Great looking car. looks like hint of EVO with a hint of FD2 with a dollop of SCOOBY.
i like that spoiler. cant compare it to anything ive ever seen before. And i am going to have nice dreams about that digital boost gauge tonight. So awesome
Nobody is going to point out that in 4 generations, Subaru has made almost NO progress whatsoever with respect to the EJ motor?
why change a good thing? The 2JZ engine from toyota and the RB26 are two of the best enginges, made in the 90's, same with an EJ. Nissians new engine is obviously next level, but the RB26, and even the SR20 to some degree are phenomenal with the amount of pound for pound power that they can extract.
STi is made to be tuned by owners themselves, basically it's not for noobs
CHanges focus on all generation available for North American Market are chassis dynamics. And where people just focuses on Engine power will never understand.
Ugly! better get a 86 seriously
***** Firstly, it's not a good thing that we have to modify them right off the bad. Secondly, there is NOT a lot of overengineering on that H4. To reliably track it, you can't tune these things very much.
Too funny, great delivery. Very enjoyable video. I'm friggin' jealous.
the only thing missing is a WAGON version and I'm sold!
finally a video without the launch edition
*cough* drove the launch edition during the track portions *cough*
haha
As much as i love the ej motors and the subaru rumble i was really hoping for something new out of the sti. Not that the 2.5 is a bad engine its just strange that it's been the same engine since 2004. As much as people hate on the wrx and it's equal lengths those FA motors don't mess around.
I
Very nice video, You sir have a new subscriber!
Great review BTW, appreciated your enthusiasm on track :)
Subaru just called me, they let me know that my late second generation WRX STi is now worth more! Thank you Subaru for making the new STi into a Civic and creating more demand for my 2nd gen 07' !
Things naive people say whenever a newer generation of their car comes out. Do I win?
I expected to hear more about driving dynamics. Feels like he was just summarizing a Car & Driver article or something.
Great vid and review!
Anybody that talks bad about this car or the new WRX, doesn't like Japanese cars, period. This car screams Japan in every way, and that's why I think its just as cool as any other sports car from that country. How quickly people forget we're lucky to even have this car available to us in the states. Same for EVO & GTR. IMPO, I'd buy this car or a previous gen, and be happy either way.
I'm surprised he doesn't have a Launch edition. Sweet car and great review! Thank you! I have the daddy of this car, an 04 Sti!
2011 model was the best in my opinion. This model grows on you though.
Damn sweet ride, lovely alternative to shove in the face of BMW, Audi, Merc drivers. A car for true drivers and not brand snobs. Shame however the lower front grille doesn't extend lower and outwards, all is very flat, but of course the current design accomodates a greater ride height and is more practical. I get that :)
Sorry, I will keep my 09 535i. The new Subie looks like a 2010 Civic Si sedan.
I owned an 2005 Sti, I miss it. It was one of the best cars I ever had.
I personally feel the Sti has steadily declined in exterior style, and the interior isn't much to write home about, but it is nicer than the last few STi's interiors.
If they would have produced the Sti COUPE CONCEPT, I would be willing to trade the BMW in.... that thing was sweet looking.
I've still got my 2005. I like that they're sort of returning the 2015 to that aggressive open grille look, but I find it odd that they're not throwing the new FA20 engine into the STI. Makes me a tad concerned about my BRZ's longevity. I'd love to trade up the STI once the BRZ is paid off, but if all they've honestly added is the driving modes and a shorter steering ratio (2005 is 16.5:1), I'm probably better off just fixing the minor faults in my car and doing some upgrades.
I was considering trading the car in back in 2008 on a hatch STI, but the soft suspension, extreme sound deadening, and vague shifting on the newer STI's changed my mind. I hope they went back to the 2005's aggressive feel with the 2015.
Dude... I drove the living shit out of my 05, it was slightly modded, but nothing crazy.
THAT CAR WAS INDESTRUCTIBLE!! 95k hard miles, and never one mechanical hiccup. NOT ONE.
To be honest, I am not a big fan of BRZ's, roadsters just don't appeal to me personally.
I do however want to buy a coupe for my next car. My 5 series is nice, but heavy and slow, not exciting to drive.
That's why I was so bummed that they didn't put that Impreza coupe concept in to production.
Did you see the coupe? www.mainpump.ru/image/2013/04/01/5660-1.jpg
Nelson Abdala 350hp.. good luck man. Watch those temps and keep a sharp eye on your oil pressure on track days.
Yeah, there is no way taking out the 2.5 boxer and putting the 2.0 would be a selling point, more like turn off.
That's awesome! Keep it in the family! The Sti is a timeless vehicle. No matter if it's an 04 a 2014, when I see an Sti on the street, it get's my attention!
I love the 2015 wrx sti but the only thing i dislike is how high it is in the front, it looks like it's facing upwards which looks kind of clumsy but other than that its so beautiful and powerful too!
It's been ten years. Ten Years!!! And, the the 2005 still looks better.
Love the intro and the car!
is it just me or do the regular sti wheels look better than the BBS ones? if only they were gold
I purchased the WRX and do not regret it. I drove both and the STI was not worth the extra 10k in my opinion. Unless you spend a good amount of time at a track then save your money and buy a WRX. In a few years the aftermarket will catch up to the 2.0 and overcome the outdated 2.5 the STI still uses.
I like it, but not enough to trade in my 06 STI. Also I think keeping the EJ25 is a good thing. Tuners and aftermarket suppliers are well versed in getting more power out of this motor. My EJ25 hits 340 whp with just a few mods and a good tune.
you have a mod list?
Munky332 Engine mods are: Perin Turboback exhaust, K&N Typhoon intake (mostly a noismaker really) Cobb Accessport and a kick-ass tune from a German shop that mostly specializes on Audis and Porches but since they have an AWD dyno, they took on my STI anyways and did a great job. More power can come from this powerplant but it's my daily driver so I don't want to get too extreme. On the forums guys regularly get a lot more out of this engine so keeping it for the 2015 is not the drawback some are making it out to be.
Justin Key
IF this engine did not have its stupid ringland problems I would not be waiting for the Golf R next year and keep my 10' STI. Also if it didn't get the same MPG as my GTO did I would be happy, but I wouldn't care if I could know this engine won't grenade randomly. The chassis, brakes AWD are soo good but the EJ is soo bad its depressing. Im leaving my STI stage 1 cause im paranoid.
Not enough performance enhancements for me to trade in my 2013 STI. I guess I'm staying with my '13 for a long time...
Scoobies are not meant to be disposable cars.
Enjoy your '13 STI!
TsujiGameplays I hear ya. But the only reason I was considering getting the new model was because of the previous rumors that the car was going to have better performance numbers. But since it's basically the same car with a new body and interior, I'll be staying with my '13 for a while.

Rene Cruz Yeah, I don't think we'll see any radical changes by Subaru on the Impreza any time soon, it's a formula and it just works hahaha
Once I really learned how to drive my brand new 13' STi, I honestly wish I bought an older one, for cheaper parts n whatnot. Ha
Great review. Thanks guys
this car is pretty sweet in person
Why did Subaru not put the STi badge on the steering wheel? I liked that touch in the previous models.
"not the rotors, the brakes!" OMFG
Love this vehicle. People who don't like - well to each his own.
went into a subie dealer down here in australia. got to say the wrx with the sti styling pack looks mint in pearl white. they didnt have an sti on display just a red one that they had sold down in the basement (it was a base model, looked pretty povo against the white wrx). ill be back in a few weeks to take one for a test drive.
My only gripe is the engine. yes you are paying less and thats why you are getting the same engine, but seriously, all they had to do was put a fa series engine which put out the same horsepower but with better economy and the car would be complete....it drinks too much with the carry over!
at first i didn't like the image to the new STI, but i have to say..it has kinda grown on me.
John Smith...They are NOT equal length on the STI as it still uses the same EJ25 engine that they have (disappointingly) been running since it hit our shores. The 2015 WRX now uses the FA series 2.0l WITH equal length. Not that the 2.5 is a bad engine(I've had a 2011 STI/2013 WRX sedan and currently run a 2013 WRX hatch) by any means but if they did a "completely new" car they should have updated to the FA TWIN SCROLL DIT that they put in the Japanese circa 2012 Legacy GT that puts out nearly 300hp.
Can you give us any specifications about the car please when it comes to performance and such?
Fuel economy, 0-60, braking time, stuff like that if it's possible. Thank you.
fair things to ask for but since I don't do instrumented testing I can't realistically and honestly supply them... so I typically avoid mentioning things like that.
Jeff Glucker
The video is better without them, people can google that crap in written reviews. Keep up the good work focusing on driver impressions and stuff that can't be found in spec sheets. Nice review.
Can I ask if you've driven the previous model? I'd love to know what the steering feel is like - not impressed with the 08-14 cars at all in this respect - way too light and vague on the limit.
Jeff Glucker Thank you
i wonder if they ended up putting forged pistons, to solve the cracked ringland issue.
why the music i want to hear the car sing ha
2014 370Z NISMO (white) or 2014 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI (white)?
Such a nice car
Jeff, bottom line, would you buy this car? I'm coming from a GTI and considering it...
It's very possible that you'd be bummed with the interior. I might suggest you look at the Golf R.
Huge improvement in every way possible except for the drivetrain
STI and Evo just had a baby and it's nasty!
I drive these roads every day, awesome! There is basically no cops out there and people speed through those roads all the time hehe
"This you can probably tell, right from looking at it, right from the get-go, is the Mitsubi- I mean, 2015 Subaru..."
huehuehue (seriously, I laughed a little)
Engine sounds good.
I totally knew what you meant by the video game reference to the corkscrew. Lol
Fuck what everyone thinks! I'm getting this car!
But.....................everyone loves this car.
Riley Osborne I don't, what happened to the good old 2 litre and good looks :(
Mmmm the red with gold wheels!
good video!
I don't get it. If this is a 2015 model, how the hell is it available in February 2014? It's probably been produced in 2013!
Do they make a 2015 wrx sti hatch? If they dont I will be sad:(
Wow, Sick Camry.
I want those wheels on my 05 STI! maybe even those new breaks too lol
2:17 - surpising low end torque? thought the sti was moving itself only above 4000 rpm...
pretty sure the performance specs were identical to the '14 as far as hp and torque. in both sti and non-sti.
there is no point to test in the track!
this is a RALLYE CAR!
At the beginning when you said this is the new 2015, I thought you were going to say Evolution XI yeah because it looks like an Evo.
i wonder if this is the base sti wheel
If I was a buyer. I want to know if it is worth buying this new car. It has the same old engine, that means only the chassis and clothes are new. Is that enough to justify a new car?
The STI got more than just chassis and clothes upgrades. It got a tougher 6 speed MT, different driveline, better/stiffer suspension, the Brembo brakes. All the bushings are harder than the ones in the WRX, they probably will last longer. Even if it has the EJ25 engine, but it is much easier to put an additional 50 HP to it with ECU tuning. The $8000 difference is worth it in my opinion, it will cost you more to upgrade with the WRX.
akadhsu
Sorry it has the EXACT same drive train as the old STI it got all those upgrades over a WRX yes, but no it did not gain these over the previous model STI, I drive a 2010 Sti and it has all of these things. He was stating from STI to STI its not that different and not worth the upgrade.
akadhsu
Yes, What Allerum said is what I meant.
Nope, I bought a new one in 2011 put together poorly! I waited 3 months for mine & it came off the truck with WRX fender badge ...stupid! .and the list goes on. I will never get a Subaru again .... Overpriced for what u get however, if you want to track it it's a fun car.
Plus it's the same drive tran from 2004 with some tweaks (motor tranny)
It's funny that my grand father, a Canadian aeronautical engineer, who worked on the space shuttle and also was part of the most advanced fighter ever built in the 70's(f-15), laughs at the down force numbers manufactures say they get because he goes out to the car lots at age 83 and measures all the parameters of their spoilers and laughs!!
My friend has this car. Its a nice car smooth driving its the shit
I hate this car too! Its TOO PERFECT! DAM----------------------------
Is it just me... or does that look strikingly like a Lancer Evolution?
eh, maybe the headlights, but thats about it, and it looks like a hatch sedan more than your regular sedan.
is you.
Oh my gosh! I recognize that track just because I have played too much Real Racing 3!!
Great video and commentary... only change is to bring down the music levels.
Needs the STi marks on the front bumper like the 2004 STi's. It looks like a wrx with a swing
swing haha every car needs a portable swing :P
at 0:38 I was like... move out of the way!
I am too old for the boy racer wing. I am really missing the hatchback.
Subaru Impreza 2004 only and forever !
is 14.5#s of boost normal for stock STI?
I want this car so bad
hard to be an evo guy when subaru puts out something like this lol
I want those black bbs wheels on my 05 STi. I'll keep my 05 though lol
subaru
this is no subi anymore
front hyundai, back citroen, no sound :(
Anybody else notice the change of narrator when he said led headlamps and led tail lights? Lol
haha, I was waiting for someone to catch that! I had to re-dub... I said HID when I was recording for some reason. I can hear the change clearly, and I'm surprised it took this long for someone to mention it.
Its all good, still damn boring looking car imo. The only thing that made me really happy about this video is that in "related videos" i see a dirt track test of the 2015 sti!!! omg been waiting for someone to finally open their eyes and test the STI in its natural habitat! XD
this is just under 40k, i wonder if i can have just as much fun in Focus ST, or mazdaspeed3? under 25K
You can certainly have fun in those cars... but if you TRULY want bang for the buck fun, take a look at the Fiesta ST.
Nice Camry, Where's the Subaru?
Nice joke. Where's the originality?
I'm not sure, Ask Subaru. It's certainly not in the design department
brainleakfookops It's under the body. Subaru, unlike most, is about substance. Yes, you'll need to look somewhere else to satisfy your vanity.
It's sad, as a Subaru owner, I wont buy buying a new one for a while due to the looks. I know how they run. That's why I've kept my 04 legacy alive
"...New Transmission..." (4:56) -----> Really?!?!
"...Auto - ..." (4:15) "...Sends ALL the power to the rear..." ----> Really?
Could you elaborate more on these two claims?
Thank you.
random question what song is that I'm the begging of the video
Looks like a evo 10 though
very nice!
That's a cool evo
Lame, we still get the outdated unequal length manifold and single scroll non-ball bearing turbo japan hasn't had since like 2002/2003. I hope they at least fix the ecu mapping so they don't blow up bone stock:/
since they stuck with the ej257 they should have atleast fitted this 2015 with a twin scroll...
O no, Subaru's PR team is gonna have to work overtime with this car. Quick, someone call Makinen and Pastrana. Tell them we have another pay check with their names on it.
