What happened during Dropzle and Cassette Cliff? Why did you have so many dashes?

I'm guessing that they skipped a dropzle trigger that made the dashes not regenerate, so they got all 9 back when they touched the ground. Then, even though their max dash count was reset, the 9 dashes were enough to skip cassette cliffs.
