- We are told all things are either male or female.
Everything on the surface of Mother Earth. Rocks, insects, birds, Plants, and the Five-fingered being.
Navajo Historian, Wally Brown teaches about the traditions of our Diné and the teachings about male and female.
How do you know if a certain rock is male or female? Or a plant? These are the questions answered in this video.

I wish my Plains Cree Elders would use UA-cam as a platform to reach the youth. Not just the youth but everyone. The cure to ignorance is knowledge.
You could do a channel and interview the elders!😊
Great idea.. 👍👍
I love that idea!
Please let us know if you decide to start a channel 😊
The cure to ignorance isn't knowledge, it's wisdom. There's so many people filled with knowledge but lacking in wisdom. What's the difference, right? Knowledge can come from a book, but wisdom can only come from experience.
I'm Samoan. We share the same veiws about sexuality. Feminine/Masculine aren't bound by gender. I can feel the essence of spirit energies of both. Also animals.
Thank you so much for explaining this part, I was curious. That’s beautiful 😊

This also goes for the Sioux people. I'm Dakota Sioux and I learned this after I came back to meet my dad and all my brothers, sisters and relatives. I've been back now almost 30 yrs. I love how he said at the end that people who possess the feelings of opposite sex are considered having special abilities... Not discriminated against, but honored for their uniqueness. Something a lot of people can learn from.
Our present day modern society doesn't recognize this at all.
@@margaritakleinman5701 No they don't. In fact, modern day society is trying to portray having feelings of the opposite as being exactly the same as someone who doesn't, instead of honouring them separately. Just look at transgender women competing in the female category in the Olympics for an example.
I love the comments in this thread, it really restores my hopes for humanity.
I am male to female trans btw and have experienced more hate for me than acceptance and respect, so I appreciate your kind regards. Thanks.

And definitely important to pay attention to our senses .. 1st instincts about something.

Not just male & female, equal parts of a whole, but the "2 spirits" as other indigenous cultures call people he refers to as "special" & "having unique gifts". What I get is the separation & categorization of the sexes are made in order to fully appreciate, honor & celebrate the distinct qualities of each; not made into a contentious superiority complex that infects a lot of other cultures.
You put into words exactly what I was thinking! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
.my culture dont have 2 spirits its considered a bad thing... they didnt have a word for gay back then so they say special
Two spirits is still either a male or a female as he says. It has been twisted by modern western culture. It was a person who understood or inclinations of the other sex but was always considered male or female. How it has been stolen and misrepresented by modern people to push their own modern non binary gender agenda which is actually the exact opposite of the original meaning, is actually tragic and a real disservice to the original concept.
2 spirits was probably naturally born Hermaphrodites, there are more than two sexes.
@@timd524 Two-spirit is a modern umbrella term made by Native American/First Nations people to replace "berdache" which was an anthropological term (describing any person in "non-traditional" gender roles) and distance from the terms gay, lesbian, and trans, as they were considered offensive colonial projections. It is not culture-specific and different societies have different perspectives on gender, indigenous people are not a monolith.
Two-spirit itself has been criticized for being as much a term of erasure as that which it was made to replace, leading to this whole interaction here. It was coined by one group in the 90s, so it's as much a recent invention as it is not universal.
It's also important to note that it is about traditional and ceremonial roles and has little to do with sexuality or gender expression. Using yet another traditional culture to bash trans people and homosexuals isn't some enlightened take and romanticizing "savage wisdom" is hella racist.
I think so many of us are starving for the Dine’ outlook on life, regardless of race. The sacred nature of all of live has been forgotten by too many.
Agreed 🙏💚 it saddens me that people are teaching that being inspired by other cultures is “appropriation” or exploitation. I feel so blessed to be able to learn about different cultures and their experiences. Plus if you believe in reincarnation we could all have been various races/cultures in past lives. It’s just a space suit to get us from one dimension to another
@@thecommonsensecapricorn appropriation is not when someone sincerely and purely learns from other cultures. Appropriation is taking from other cultures in bad faith...to profit, exploit and claim as ones own or to bolster your image and disregard and deny where it came from . This can occur systemically or individually. When someone from outside a culture is pure in intention, the people of that culture will accept their interest in learning. When the intent is impure, they will be called out.
Nope. Nobody wants to hear your woke blathering.

Nádleehi is a social and, at times, ceremonial role in Diné (Navajo) culture - an "effeminate male" or "male-bodied person with a feminine nature". However, the nádleehi gender role is also fluid and cannot be simply described in terms of rigid gender binaries. Some Diné people recognize four general places on the gender spectrum: feminine woman, masculine woman, feminine man, and masculine man. Nádleehí may express their gender differently from day to day, or during different periods over their lifetimes, fulfilling roles in community and ceremony traditionally held by either women or men.
Very interesting and enlightening, thanks for sharing.

I sensed male or female aspects to things in nature as well when I was younger. I thought that was just my being strange, lol. But it helped me have a certain respect for nature. The feeling there is something more than what is seen.
Yes there is always something more than what is seen.
I thought numbers had genders when I was very young. Guess I was right.
I had that too quite strongly when I was a child, it helps to understand and form the world around us. But as I grew older and busier with the mundane things in life that "sense" was also somewhat forgotten for the most part. Sometimes when I'm somewhere strange or completely at ease with the world it might come back to me briefly. I hope to have that again permanently. But it's interesting as children totally unspoilt by materialism we are so in tune with nature and intuition without even realising, great to know other people also had that power.

I like how he says we are equal.
Equality is nothing more than a concept made up by those weaker than those who are strong. There will always be somebody better than you, more successful and far better off emotionally and financially. Just as you will always be above somebody else in the world.

Most flowering plants have both male and female parts. It's more of a continuum than a division. According to Eastern philosophy, a little bit of yang exists inside yin and a little yin inside yang.
Thank you. Nature doesn't care about our silly human binaries. Anyone who wants to know how complicated sex and reproduction can get outside of the animal kingdom should look no further than fungi. Literally hundreds of sex combinations.
-This is no commentary of the speaker's culture and this topic, btw. Just because I'm a western queer doesn't mean that I can't listen to another perspective... especially since my own ancestral people would likely throw me out for being who I am.
@@antifagoat6591 It's not the fungi that have literally hundreds of sex combinations. You are probably thinking of myxogastrians, which are more closely related to lobose amoeba than to fungi.
@@antifagoat6591 I am not completely sure that these teachings necessarily exclude LGBTQIA+ people. At first I thought they totally did, but listened to the end. When he got to the part about men who understand the female aspect, and women who understand the male, and that they’re special people, I took that as an opening for acceptance and understanding of the LGBTQIA+ people of the world. Of course I could be wrong, but here’s hoping. I’m also not a member of that community, so my perspective may be lacking.
@@gido9467 Having feminine qualities does not make you less of a man, having masculine qualities dois not make you less of a woman, it's so crazy to me how much backwards we've gone over the past few years, when we were trying to get rid of the stigmas and stereotypes, to now if you are either of those two you *must* be trans, while at the same time denying the existence of feminine and masculine traits, it's completely nonsensical.
@@AlquimistEd I’m sorry; I don’t really understand what you’re trying to say. I agree that having feminine traits doesn’t make you less of a man, and having masculine traits doesn’t make you less of a woman. If I am a man, but have traits that have been traditionally associated with women, then by definition they must not be exclusively feminine traits, and vice versa. Traits, clothes, interests, etc. all seem to just be a grab bag anybody can choose from, regardless of gender or sex. The people who would deny this are willfully ignoring the reality that’s right in front of them.
Edit: I think my confusion came from the feeling that you were saying that I personally felt that having one trait or another could make someone more or less masculine. What I said was that I think the Navajo teachings as described in the video leave room for acceptance of lesbian, gay, trans, queer, intersex, asexual, and others who are not cisgender, heterosexual, etc.
Very interesting in today’s culture.

Very cool perspective. I agree that Both male and female energy is equally important in the world and it creates with us a whole as a species. I think it is also very important to embrace both these types of thinking and energy within yourself
In 1545 conquistador Alvar Nuñez actually documented two-spirit men among tribes near Texas. Nuñez wrote a book "Naufragios" to explain all he witnessed as a captive for 8 years by the tribes. Nuñez saw these 2S men had special roles in the tribe to prepare the dead for travel in after life. Nobody else would touch a dead body. These two-spirit men were thought to have special powers. They also performed tasks mostly done by females. Nuñez by studying the tribal life, became a trader, and a healer, and was able to walk away to find Spanish forces in Sinaloa.

I'm only around 3-5% Navajo, my grandmothers great grandmother was a Navajo who married a Dutchman and moved with him to South Africa, my highly racist forefathers tried to keep it secret and I only discovered it when I was doing a family tree thing for school, I've been told by most of my family to just forget about it, i look white so I'm white and no1 needs to know. I've tried to get in touch with some of the Navajo side of the family but they are very aloof and kinda rejected me, I'm so glad I found this channel as I've always wanted to learn more about my various ancestral cultures and it really hurt when they shut me down because I'm "too white" I know what most of my ancestors did was atrocious but I'm trying to be my own person and I want to learn, I am not my ancestors, I come from them and I owe my existence to them but I am my own person and I want to learn more and return to the natural way of life as much as I can, I want to be someone who my grandmothers great grandmother would be proud of, I want to return to my roots no matter how shallow they may grow
I'm so sorry you got shut down like that, all my Cherokee family are dead/ unknown to me, this is my biggest fear when interacting with my tribe since I'm mixed but still look hella white. Ooh, that sounds super interesting! It sucks that you got shut down like that though. I'm personally here because I love learning about other cultures and beliefs- I want to be a historian or anthropologist.
I’m almost in the same kind of boat like you, but I never went to the tribe that ancestors came from. Mainly because I live like 2 states away from it and I have no money to go there, but also out of the fear of rejection. I’m also “white skin” from what people like to call it. I would like to some day go up their and learn more about the tribe. Though I probably never will because of the fear of my skin color. I understand why Native Americans are mad at the “white skin” people from the past, but that doesn’t give them the right to be mean to the present “white skin” people, unless they are being racist then I perfectly understand. I have come from first hand experience. Let’s just say me and my family had to stay on a reservation with my grandmother because we had nowhere to live and my grandmother was kind enough to let us live with her until we got back on our feet. And let’s say they didn’t like us one bit just because of the color of our skin. At the time I never understand why they picked on us because I was only a kid back then. But as I got older I understand why they picked on us, but still didn’t give them any right to pick on our family just because of our skin color. I never would of done that to them. But I guess things happen for a reason, I suppose. So now if I am ever near a Native American person or even driving in a tribe. I just always feel guilty and severely nervous. Like they are going to do something to me. But I know they won’t, but thoughts like that always go threw my head like that, I’m also not blaming them for that for the way I feel. It’s just how my emotions react, and it also doesn’t help I easily paranoid and have high level anxiety. Sorry for the long comment, I just needed to get this off my chest. If you are reading this thank you for time. Have a wonderful day or night!!☀️🌕
