- Traditionally, powwow categories are listed with the gender binary “Women” and “Men”. However, many tribes recognize more than two genders. The 2nd Annual Two Spirit Powwow took place in Phoenix last February and the powwow committee decided to remove gender from all categories. The Two Spirit Powwow is hosted by Native PFLAG, an organization with the goal to keep families together and foster the traditional teachings of what it means to be LGBT and/or Two-Spirit. They envision a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

As someone who is also Two-Spirit but unaccepted by my family (I was not raised traditionally) I felt so much emotion watching so many others who are similar to myself come together and dance - it was beautiful

I'm from the gaelic diaspora and our traditions have been lost from Christian colinsation and brutality too, a painful thing to be a descendant of that here too, and likewise here, I am so grateful to my Maori indigenous elders for sharing with me their knowledge of total acceptance and many ways of being prior to missionaries. Go well, with keeping this beautiful work alive, in restoring people to their birthright and heritage.

Actually started uncontrollably crying when the mom started tearing up. Everything said hits very close. Realizing I've never felt like I had a safe space as well is heart breaking but marks the start of new growth and healing at the same time. Grateful to find videos like these to reassure my identity, thank you!!!!

I love that we have our traditions like this being kept up
as a young two-spirit who hasn't been around other natives in such a long time I feel so happy when I see people like me having fun, it fills me with so much joy.
I'm a Sioux teen who lives up in Ohio so there aren't a lot of powwows nearby I can attend without driving too far away from home.
I hope to attend one someday as myself, it's been so long since I've last danced

Just in case someone is questioning... Identifying as a "two spirit" doesn't necessarily means that you're into homosexuality or have to. You can be whatever you want! You got the power, just listen to yourself...

Was this before or after Coronavirus?. The pandemic has me a little too paranoid. I love pow wow of all varieties. As a very white mom of one of each-a gay son and a straight son-I am very happy to see this! (My late Stepdad was the Tribal Historian of the Cowlitz Tribe & a wonderful Dad & Grandpa. I’m a fish belly white shirt-tail relative. I miss my Stepdad, especially during these tough times!)

I live in southwest Oklahoma, and we have had such powwows. Last time we called it “eagle and condor.”

I’ve always looked up to jingle dancers and I’ve always wanted to have a dress of my own and dance but i’m a man. I’m lgbt and I like to appear feminine but Idk. I’m not sure if i’d be welcomed in my own community of wearing women’s regalia as a man.

the women's regalia is very pretty though, and you're two-spirit, so the "normal" rules don't really comply to us!
