Very helpful Video.. since 5 month i hv been washing and sterilizing entire pump set for each and every use. Was wondering if i had to change now caz if constant cleaning and sterilizing in hot water.. now that i can use this method, some relief from wasting time and energy sources.
They should be cleaned just as all other pumping equipment. Before first use, boiled in hot water. Then after any other use, washed with warm soapy water and air dried.
This was very helpful. I had been told to sterilize all my parts after every pump! And tubes 1x a day?! And I kept thinking this seems so wrong. Now I’m just going to rinse w hot water after a pump and throw them in the fridge as you suggested
Also, I want to note for anyone reading this- pay attention to manufacture recommendations for cleaning/sterilizing. I went back and read mine and turns out I was supposed to sterilize once before use then wash w hot water/soap ongoing. This is important because some plastics are not meant to be repeatedly heated, something @Done Naturally mentions here.
@@alohadakine4571 I'd dry them off. They need only be washed if milk or reside gets on them. Otherwise you shouldn't have to wash those or put them in the fridge.
Yes for micro preemies you can’t use this “hack” - not for any baby that’s remains impatient. Sterilization is only needed before the very first use. Other than that sanitizing is all we recommend. Sanitize mama clean. The current recommendation is to wash all parts that come into contract with you and your milk, wash with hot soapy water and air dry.
When at school can you usse he pump wipes to reuse your pump again because we don’t have access to fridge or hot hot water because the bathroom is a yuck
Hello. Should I every time put off cables from spectra? I pump 5-6 time per day and I only assamble flanges and bottles every time. But tubes and backflows are fixed. Is it dangerous?
The parts we wash come into contact with the milk or our breasts. The tubes carry air and do not come into contact with our milk or breasts. Nor do the backflow protectors. If they do appear to have milk in them, they can be disassembled and washed and dried.
The only thing that has touched the flanges is your body and your milk. Your own germs. If I was you, yes I would do it without worry. I mean I think about how often I wash my water bottle I carry with me everywhere and drink out of every day. And human milk is quite literally an antibacterial.
Omg! The manual says sterilize in hot water on the stove, microwave or sterilizer!!! It was so exhausting doing that after every time specially that don’t have enough milk supply so I have to pump every 2 hrs. Sterilizing is necessary but not after every use.
@@zoomfadel8170 Sterilizing and sanitize are two different things. Sterilize anything before first use. After that the only thing people need to do is sanitize aka clean. Marketers like to make you think you need to buy sterilizing machines. But this is unnecessary.
Hi there, Love your videos! Quick question, so there is no need to rinse parts in between pumping? Just simply need to take it apart and put in ziplock back? Can it be placed it ziplock bag without taking it apart? Will the milk dry in bag? Overthinker over here 😅
Hi. Thank you for all your helpful video content. Do you have any advice on reusing pump parts or bottles between babies? I am expecting baby #2 and wondering if I can safely reuse my phlanges and bottles from.my first pumping journey.
Yes I would re-use if it was me. Just do a boil before first use. Then after that, warm soapy washes. The Silicone parts may need replacing…like the nipple teat of the bottle.
Do you need to wipe any milk off of the parts before putting them in the ziplock to put in the fridge? And how often do you recommend sterilizing parts? Just before the initial use? I know some people who sterilize everyday, some once a week. I've been doing once a week with the Medela microwave bags. Thanks so much. I love your videos and FB group - it's all so helpful and especially right now since I'm not able to get out and be around other mommas!
Great questions! No need to wipe the milk off before placing in the ziploc. No need to "sterilize" except before the very first use. After that all you need to do is wash.
Sterilizing and sanitizing are 2 different things. Sterilizing is only needed one time before first ever use. After that, only sanitizing (aka cleaning) is needed. I can’t imagine chemicals leached into your milk. Formula has opportunities for chemicals, parasites, bacteria and (even been recalled for rocket fuel found inside)…so I’m sure your milk remains the safest option for baby.
My pump smells bad, what can I do about it? Hi, I pump only occasionally and once I didnt clean my pump properly and forgot it for a week, now it smells bad and I cant get rid of the smell.
How much soap do I need to put on warm water? Does is need to be soapy like there is too much bubbles on it? Or just like I put soap but there is no bubbles?
Hi thanks so much for the info. Can you use the fridge hack for pump parts with a premature baby or is it recommended to clean the parts after every use? Baby is in special care unit (in australia) and came off of cpap today. Born 31 weeks and a week old now.
I would not use it for a premature baby. With babies who are immune Compromised, premature or ill, following the “rules”, crossing our t and dotting our i is best. When I was working in the NICU with babies aged like yours, we recommended washing all parts with warm soapy water and air drying after each and every use. It’s a lot of cleaning I know. But best practice for these sweet early peanuts. ♥️
Some folks do. I always just used my hands and agitated them in the hot soapy water bath. I wouldn’t use a brush on the soft silicone parts as that can break down the integrity of the silicone.
most efficient way to clean my pump parts at work? i work at a daycare and want the spectra S1. I am hearing mixed reviews on your tip about putting pump parts in the fridge, as it’s unsanitary because the milk is sticky and it could lead to bacteria growth. is this true?
Human milk is an antibacterial fluid itself. It’s very difficult for bacteria to grow in a antibacterial environment. In fact studies have shown that freshly expressed milk has less bacteria in it after sitting out than compared to immediately after expression. The mighty cells that kill bacteria, in human milk, go to work after expression. I’m not sure what you mean by human milk is sticky tho.
Great to know that sterilization needs to be done only once, initially... scared if all the plastic leech... also, just about any soap will do and how hot should water be? Just enough where you csn place your hands in to wash the parts? Lastly, how to sterilize for first time.. is it 10 min in continuously boiling water and we need to put in even the fragile parts?
I have a momcozy, an I wash with hot soapy water. An I swear my pump parts smell soapy, an I can’t tell if it’s my breast milk or the soap I’m using. So I tasted my breast milk an i think its has a little soapy taste…I can’t tell! 😭
Correct. You do not need to sterilize except before the very first use. In the NICU, health even the instructions are to wash with hot soapy water after each use. And that’s for immune compromised babies and preemies. A full term healthy baby that’s home it’s my opinion, and many, that doing the fridge hack is safe. Human milk is safe in the fridge for up to 8 days (ABM Protocol #8). So if human milk is safe for 8 days in the fridge and the only thing on the pump parts is your milk, then those too are safe in the fridge, in a covered container and not rinsed beforehand bc water introduced more germs). With the fridge hack - I recommend washing once every 24 hours.
Twins in the NICU I would be more cautious and wash with warm soapy water and air dry after every pump session. Once they are home, healthy and full-term, yes.
Thank you! I know you are talking about pump parts here but what about bottles? Do we need to sterilize bottles and bottle nipples every time too? Great Video!
The only time bottles have to be “sterilized” is before the very first use after opening the box. Other than that you just have to wash with hot soapy water and rinse/air dry. And yes, with the “fridge hack” people do it with the milk containers too.
Almost everyone that’s home with a full-term, non-immune compromised baby. Common sense. Human milk is safe a room temp immediately after being expressed for up to 8 hours. what can i do if i already washed the tube?
I'd whip it around and let centrifugal force help. You can also hook it up to the pump and let the pump run for 30m and that'll help dry it out.
