Finaly some love for Roland. We lost 2 people at Imola, both should be remembered forever and celebrated.
Thanks to everyone who was a part of this and contributed to making it a reality.

Los Angeles, 2014 -- I was with my co-worker picking up computer equipment. At the front desk was a lovely young woman who greeted us. I noticed her last name. And as unlikely as I thought it would be, I had to ask: "I noticed your last name. This may sound silly, but you wouldn't happen to be related to Roland the F1 driver?" She paused with a very surprised look on her face and said "Yes... He was my uncle. I was so young so I barely remember him but my family still miss him a lot".
I was kinda shocked that she really was related to him and didn't know how to respond at first. I told her I watched the race that tragic weekend and was only 11 years old. I also said that Roland's death affected me and that the following day was one of the worst days of my childhood when Ayrton died. She acknowledged how tragic that weekend was. Before I left, I shook her hand and said thank you for the chat. She was very nice and polite.
The rest of my day was an inexplicable feeling. I guess having such a memorable event of your childhood and 20 years later to randomly meet a family member of the person who tragically died that weekend brought back all those memories and emotions in a more connected way, if that makes any sense. Kinda weird how us humans function and connect. I'm very glad it happened though. I'm also glad that both drivers are still recognized every year. R.I.P Roland & Ayrton.

Roland is not forgotten. 🏆💝 In a way, he will always be connected to my life in one way and that is something that bothered me a bit for several years. On the day Roland had his accident, I had the misfortune of seeing one of his old rivals. When our discussion went along, I happened to ask him without even thinking about it too much: "Isn't it terribly unfair and sad what happened to Roland?" He was completely surprised and asked me what had happened? I said in a manner like: "You haven't heard...?" He hadn't. After describing what had happened, I faced a man absolutely out of words, lost as a little child. I am rarely out of words, but that was such a moment. What the reaction I faced was a telling story of what Roland meant to other people, what kind of an impact he had on other people and how people felt for him. Roland, we remember you, my heartfelt and warm regards to your family and friends. 💖🇫🇮
P.S. If there ever were drivers whose names sounded like someone bound to become a racing driver, Roland Ratzenberger surely was among them. Thank you for this excellent video.

Thanks a million for this documentary. I have read many interviews with Roland's parents and fellow drivers with who he raced with. Not the absolute talent as, for example, Senna was, but made it with an incredible determination, discipline and passion for the sport. And still incredible fast; who knows what could have happened?

  • @Fireglo
    @Fireglo Місяць тому +2

The appeal of Roland is that he's far more relatable than Senna. He's the guy that didn't make it and died trying. A tragedy is more interesting than a success story. How many people can put themselves in Roland's shoes? You had a dream, you tried, you got close but it wasn't meant to be?

It's now 30 years since Roland and Ayrton died. I almost can't believe it. It feels like maybe seven or eight, but not thirty years! It's all still so fresh in my memory. I only watched it on TV back then, but I didn't miss a single Grand Prix - the sport with the great cars and charismatic drivers was so great. This Imola 94 has burned itself into my life. It's strange that I still feel all the sadness today. And yet I knew Roland and Ayrton personally.

I'm Brazilian and I started to enjoy motorsport because of Ayrton Senna. After his death, something that always bothered me is how Ratzy's story was never given the attention it deserved...
Many people here don't even know that we had a great guy who died the day before, pursuing his dream. And that was the closest thing to avoiding the accident of our national hero.
That's why I would like to ask you for permission to subtitle this documentary in Portuguese. This story does not deserve and will not be erased.

A great start to what I’m sure will be a great little mini series. 👍🏼
That Imola weekend really sticks in my mind to a point I can remember parts of it like it was yesterday. What I was doing, what I ate, where I went, songs that were playing.
I was 16 and looking back it felt like a coming of age weekend where I kind of viewed the world a bit differently. It made me think about death properly for the first time too.
    I just can’t believe it’s 30 years ago.

I am sorry to say that it wasn't until a few years ago did I discover what happened to Mr.Ratzenberger. It's a wonderful thing what you and the rest are doing by speaking about him so that the rest of us who come in to the sport can learn about him.

Dude was a bum. You realize he was 32 in his first season in f1. Yall act like he was Schumacher. He was more like mazapin. The only reason he gets any recognition is because he died the same weekend as senna. Other than that Roland was a untalented pay driver.

You don't win a spec event like Formula Ford festival without talent mate. He was no Senna or Schumacher, but despite his humble background through sheer determination and joy in racing (despite it being a sport where you face more setbacks than actual succesful times even if you're one of the best), he made it there where he dreamed to be, amongst the best. He sure deserves more respect than you decided to give him here.
