- The "Violet's Eyes" demo was recorded in 1997 while Amos was working on her album From The Choirgirl Hotel, released in 1998. Much of this demo eventually became the song "Miracle," which was released as a digital bonus track from her 2007 album American Doll Posse.
Lyrics:
...Looking for Violet's eyes
...Looking for Violet's eyes
No cream pie
No little red riding
No violets
On this colorless, colorless day
...Looking for Violet's eyes
Your heart they say
Never started beating
And silly I'm
still sillily talking to her
Talking to her
Miracle, Miracle
She's run from all the churches in her favorite dress
Hey, hey, hey
Cry Miracle, Miracle
Could have used one today
No Miracle, Miracle
God I hope she's not gone far
'cause boys not many DJs can make you a star
Hey, hey, hey
...Looking for Violet's eyes
...Looking for Violet's eyes
Looked in garbage bins
And even in the playgrounds
The medicine men say you're trapped between the worlds
Trapped between the worlds now
Miracle, Miracle
She's vanished from the churches in her favorite dress
Hey, hey, hey
Call Miracle, Miracle
Could have used one today
No Miracle, Miracle
God I hope she's not gone far
'cause boys not many DJs can make, make, make you a star
Hey, hey, hey...
...Looking for Violet's Eyes
...Looking for Violet's Eyes
...Looking for Violet's Eyes
Could have used one today
Looking for Violet's Eyes
In my top 10 Tori songs, from albums, b sides, unreleased etc. The line "your heart they say, never started beating and silly I am still sillily talking to her" absolutely floors me.
People don't seem to realize that not only is the beautiful track a demo for "Miracle", but also a demo for "Almost Rosey". ("ah, hey, hey")
Saint Rodriguez that was the first song I heard, too :)
"Now about when Violet died..."
Definitely noticed that the first time I heard it.
I am ashamed. As the Tori Amos fan-boy that I am, I had no idea this existed. I was making a play list for a friend, and decided I would post "Miracle" to her FB wall as a preview. Lo and behold, this emerged. So glad it did! I immediately downloaded it, then converted it to mp3!
I've never heard this song and here I thought being a fan as long as I have I knew every b-side. Thank you for this uploader!
It's amazing just how different the "initial" version was - It's like, a whole different song with a whole different meaning/atmosphere, even if the chorus is virtually identitical... I guess it wouldn't be the same with like, ten years of life and experience in between... This one feels all sorts of rushed and un-harmonic, (not in a bad way, but in a way that accurately reflects an emotion of urgent despair and chaotic emotions), while the other fits together nicely.
so much pain in this song.... :/
the piano n this is so amazing, and funny to hear Miracle lyrics here, now that I know Miracle in a whole different way. almost forgot about this demo! thanks for posting
Great to hear new stuff from the Choirgirl era.
SO much better than Miracle. This is a gem.
Somehow, I picture the "narrator" much younger in "Miracle", it could be any "life isn't fair" sort of situation, but this here is very specificly about the death of a child... I'm kinda shocked how it can be so different while being technically so similar. I love that dark, heavy feeling on all the FTCH-related material, but "Miracle" was totally my favorite among the ADP "bonus tracks"... So yeah. I love both for their own reasons, but its practically like two different songs.
This is amazing!!! How was it not included in From the Choirgirl Hotel?
omg, it's proto Almost Rosey!
Uugh, so intensely critical! I'm just really listening to that awesome piano delivery that ONLY Tori can achieve as a 20th/21st century artist. as nobody will ever come close to her piano intelligence!!! Give credit where credit is due ... she paved the way for those female artists we see trying to sing and play the piano, with the exception of Lady Gaga, 'cause she's someone who controls her own sound, writes her own music, has the Best voice and can play her own instruments (really good at piano and one can hear that she is classically trained. Sorry to bore everyone with the details, Tori woke me up in the 90's and the music industry right now sucks esp. with the girl groups flaunting their bodies and people glorifying this!!!! Don't get me started. Anyone who wants to respond to my frustrastion and glorification of the original "queen", Tori, please submit your comment. I can't be the only one who feels this way.
Catherine McCarthy totally agree with you.
I was just thinking the same thing tonight as you wrote above. Ty.
i like newer tori songs better. they are more soothing now. like bats and bang and climb.
Totally agree.
The older Tori songs had a grittier, passionate edge to them, which I prefer. But to each their own!
This is amazing. I just found it today and fell in love. I love Tori, but she really killed and kind of ruined this song with the 2007 final version, but this demo is amazing.
Is there a way to get a download of this?
Aww don't be sad about it. Everyone has an opinion, silly. Get well soon.
A good example of how Tori made magic in the 90s...
compared to the rather bland Miracle in the 2000s.
Still love you T... don't feel bad- everything was better in the 90s :D
+Jason mortaljason Almost Rosey...
+Rebecca Allan Indeed.
I strongly prefer Miracle to this.
