    The thing is - Carson knew when to let comedians do their thing. Carson's timing was as important if not more important than the comedian's. He knew exactly the right moment to step in, be the straight man, set up for a bit, and the really good comedians knew he was doing it and would take their cues from Johnny. It's amazing to watch now decades later. I never realized it at the time how crucial Johnny was to the comedian sitting in the chair beside him. It's a lost art. No talk show host today has these skills and the impeccable timing.

    • @JoeDitzel
      @JoeDitzel 2 роки тому +5

      Good point. This video really shows it. He sets them up very quickly and effortlessly, smooth and concise, then sits back with a smile and lets them shine. Then he senses the bit is over and quickly sets the stage for them again. And again. It's really something to watch - a master at the top of his game.

      @@JoeDitzel And he doesn’t constantly interrupt his guests, intentionally embarrass or frighten them, or steal the limelight from them. Also, Johnny would have the occasional non-entertainer (average Joe) as a guest. I don’t watch Fallon, Corden, Meyers, Colbert, etc, because these guys think they are funnier than their guests, they talk over their guests, make their guests the butts of jokes and they are elitists. Give me Graham Norton any day; at least he’s entertaining.

      @@JoeDitzelwell said, Joe. The beauty of Carson is that he really enjoys young comics and is really happy for their success. A lot of other hosts seem to have a vague resentment, like "hey, you're stealing my laughs! "
      Carson really understood the mechanics of comedy, the timing and always tried to help. Nowadays, the host would jump in with, "what was it like working with Madonna?" or some such buzzkill. Sigh.

      There is every reason to approach the host position that way. It's better for the guests and for the audience and for the ratings. Carson had the monologs and skits and the opportunities to display his wit during the interviews. He had a free pass to make fun of Ed and of Doc and of Freddy. That's enough and there's no need to compete with the guests. But some of today's hosts appear to be unable to take the support role with a guest who is ready, willing and able to entertain us.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but SNL has always been hit-or-miss, even with the BEST cast they've ever had. You only remember the great sketches, but your brain forgot about the other dozens of bombs that even you didn't laugh at back when your favorite cast was on the air.
      I'm as guilty as anyone else when I think "oh man, SNL used to be so much better/funnier when so-and-so was in the cast!" but then if you actually watch the show, even the current cast has about the same funny/not funny ratio as all of the others.

    Such a gem interview on SO MANY LEVELS! Carvey is stellar, but I love the inclusion of Christopher Reeve (RIP), didn't realize that's who the other guest was until Carvey "brought out" the Church Lady and brought him into the routine. And of course Johnny was the best host at letting his guests have the spotlight instead of wanting it himself.

    I was from the same home town as Chris Reeves. His family had a giant mansion that they donated to the town. We built a new high school on the property, rented out the giant stone mansion for TV and movies, built a park with pools, tennis courts, outdoor ice rink and more. Wonderful family. What an unjust tragedy for the man
