- This song is so unbelievably epic! The mere fact that we have 11 singers in a 13 minute song should tell you all you need to know. There is nothing I can say that will explain what this song is, you are just going to have to listen to it yourself... so... Let's listen together, shall we?
Hi Jules, I love your reaction, Ayreon is a music project by Arjen Anthony Lucassen, the guy with the guitar and bass, he writes his albums mostly as sci-fi novels and then invites different singers to impersonate the characters, like Floor as a biologist or Simone as a counselor. Had the pleasure of being at an Ayreon concert last year, you can imagine what it's like when musicians and singers come on stage from all sides. As an encore this song was performed, Simone was there, Hansi Kürsch, Michael Mills, and many others, Floor's part was taken over by her sister Irene. I would never have believed in my life that I would ever hear this song live, please continue with Ayreon, I guess you will be surprised by many voices. Tip is Ayreon Universe and Electric Castle, no matter which song there are many on YT .
Yes but if you do Into The Electric Castle Live And Other Tales you should do the whole concert song by song in the right order. Then you can witness what a kind of roleplaying is going on!

You should listen this video and hear that there are some problems as your speakers take control of sound. At point 9.26 is good example. Use headphones and just pause when you need to speak, just don´t speak over the music, it seems make some difficulties. This is treasure to listen!

If you use headphones you don't get the cases where the sound bleeds from the speakers to the microphone. Otherwise a great reaction.
I agree. Ear monitors or proper headphones is the way to go for reacting this kind of music to have good enough quality recording for the speech.
You'll miss a lot of low frequency notes if you use laptop speakers or some other tiny speakers, too.
Hey Jules, if you're intriged whether this could be done live, don't think about it anymore! It can! Some singers are replaced by other likely talented singers (due to availibility and schedule) All singers love to work with Arjen. He's one of the kind. Ayreon is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is described as progressive rock, progressive metal and power metal sometimes combined with genres such as folk, electronica, experimental and classical music. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist.
Each Ayreon album tells a different story, but all, with the exceptions of Actual Fantasy, The Theory of Everything, and Transitus, take place in the same fictional, science fiction universe; additionally, Lucassen's solo album Lost in the New Real is also set in the Ayreon universe. Love me some Ayreon. Arjen, the guy behind the project, always seems to get amazing rock and metal singers for his music, both unknowns and more well known people.
Tommy Karevik, the guy from close to the start that you liked, is the current singer of the band Kamelot. You might want to check him out. He has a nice live version of the song Sacrimony with Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) and Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy) where he shows a bit more of his powerful voice.
Ayreon is a rabbit hole well worth diving down. There are so many talented musicians in the metal world and they are a tight, generally supportive group. Thes Ayreon collaberations are all fantastic. I saw a video that you did a while back where you delved into the history of music. I have been thinking on and off since then that you would probably be interested in "Music" the Nightwish song that is Tuomas's interpretation of the early history of music. The official lyric video is lovely to watch.
Treat yourself to more Ayreon, I guarantee you will like all the live performances which are suggested in the other comments. Another banger song and one of my favorites is Into the Black Hole featuring Bruce Dickinson, it’s not a live performance but the video is so awesome and Bruce is singing his heart out on this one! The a capella dude is Mike Mills who is one of those humble geniuses that does e v e r y t h i n g himself. Writes an absurd amout of incredible music in every genre. If you watch the everybody dies live with ayreon Mike opens the show and he will without a doubt kill younright dead with is intro. Sit in a solid chair. If you want only Mike his prosject is named TOEHIDER.
Arjen is so talented he's self taught on guitar in fact he played the keys, guitar and bass on this one. Obviously he doesn't on stage he has a band for that but he's know to have guest musicians some as famous as Steve vai or Joe Satriani. On top of all these amazing guest singers he also has backing vocalist as well one of them is Floor Jansen's sister Irene. Please check out live Everybody dies. Another great song. Yes Arjen is a great storyteller and song writter but also thanks to Arjen he has introduced me to many great artists and bands so he promotes them so to speak.
Irene was also singing a role on The Human Equation as Passion, she is not just a back up vocalist.
What's happening to the sound? Seems to be some kind of EQ-warp going on...Ah - it's when you switch your mic on you're getting some phasing effects. You need to pause the video before turning your own mic on.

I get what you mean about multitasking, though I'd describe it as multiple input streams being overwhelming (at least for some of us). I haven't shown it to my daughter for this reason. After a while I tuned out the text on first listen, because it was distracting me, but I came back to it on subsequent views (which is not an option as part of a reaction!) and appreciate it now. Arjen is a gent, really nice to his fans as well as a fantastic music maker. _Everybody_ _Dies_ live next maybe?

I always stick around for the entire length of this song. I don't know all of the Vocalists or Instrumentalists but I do know some of them and their music; I think I know the most about Floor but I also know a little about Simone and Tommy. I can't leave them hanging so I HAVE to listen all the way through. Great song to be stuck in, though.
This is such a great project by Arjen! He's really awesome! This was just the first track off of that album and he has put out at least one album since then. The guy is a creative machine and a genius to boot! :)

Jules, I'm a metalhead, some of my favorite tunes are about 10 minutes long or more. One of them is twice that.
One of the most similar projects to Ayreon is Avantasia, by Tobias Sammet, which you heard here as "the Captain", try The Scarecrow live or Reach Out for the Light, also live. Check out Hansi Kürsch and Blind Guardian too. If you liked this, you should like them also. Start with Mirror, Mirror or chance The Bard's Song and Valhalla at Wacken, maybe the best crowd scene ever recorded, but sometimes it gets blocked. Just about every good rection channel has done the Wacken video, btw.

Arjen Anthony Lucasson, creator and producer of this musical epic. He is able to get musicians and singers to give up their time, to come and perform on this. It is not like he is calling on new artists or up and coming . These are known singers and musicians who have their own bands and music to pursue, perform, create.

And the song to hear? "Fate of Man," featuring none other than Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers.
However, I highly recommend checking out Brittney singing a karaoke video, in Edinburgh, Scotland, of "Queen of the Reich" by Queensryche. Why? Because it was this video that compelled Arjen Lucassen to call Brittney, to record "Fate of Man." In his words, "I was blown away by Brittney's vocal talent. So I had to get her for Fate of Man."
Well as most others most probably already said: Ayreon is worth looking at through all his works. He always goes for singers he thinks are great and he usually has a good feel for that I believe he was one of the first discovering Floor. The cool thing about this song is you now can follow along and explore all those singers and their own bands.
Project wise interesting is Tobias Sammet because he does a similar thing with avantasia. So he also tries to get his faves and writes the music for them. However his concept is totally different. Still also a great project. Also his band he had before Edguy is also worth a listen. You have ssooooooo much ahead of you if you want to go through all this. And it is going to be a blast I promise.

This is a music wonder. The composer, Arjen Lucassen, is in my humble opinion the best contemporary composer, together with Tuomas from Nightwish. He is a genuine very nice guy. Almost every top singer and artist enjoys working with him. They are honoured when he asks them. The result: all those artists work together in harmony without competing ego's. Now is not that an example for all of us.
I saw them live perform in 2023 and was blown away. 60 nationalities in the public. 25 main singers on stage. People fly around the globe just to witness this. And for good reasons. It is like a pelgrimage. Total satisfaction.

And what did I think when I first heard....bought it on vinyl from Europe and have since bought a couple more of his projects albums. Have to be in the right place cause it is a lot but it is unique in my experience and love it.
No TH-1 is the robot that helped the Alphans escape he only became evil at the end of the album where he took over Planet Y in the song March Of The Machines. The computer that took over planet Alpha is the Mainframe.
This song always makes want to buy a synthesyzer (I'm an organ player) ... but then I think.. "What would I do with it?"
About the subtitles: As a portuguese, I don't have this problem. eheh. (We only dub children stuff, we're used to subtitles in movies, shows etc).

Yes, I think it's because Jules is listening via speakers instead of headphones. While she listens the mic kinda shuts off so no ambient sound is picked up, but as soon as she speaks the mic also picks up the sound coming from the speakers in the room. Solution would be to try headphones. Cheers!

Ayreon's music is such a wonderful rabbit hole to fall down. Hi Jules, like your reaction though i have a suggestion. When you talk and react at something you hear, the music also echoes through the music feed. Could you listen to the music using some kind of earphones? Orlower the volume of your speakers. I dont know if anybody else have said something about it but yeah, its annoying . But still youve made a fine mix for the music we hear😘

This is a brilliant song, and Ayreon is a brilliant project. Arjen always gets an incredible cast of stellar musicians to work with him. Despite its length, this has probably become Ayreon's best-known song, almost certainly in part due to all the incredible singers on here! If you'd like to check out another song that's a bit of a journey, I'm going to recommend the live version of Edge of the World by all-female Japanese metal band Lovebites. Their songs are all in English (although the singer has a strong accent!), and they are five incredibly talented women who give you something refreshing in the male-dominated metal scene. I recommed you to continue with the Into the Electric Castle and Other Tales live show, starting with the first song Isis and Osiris. There are only 8 main characters, and in my opinion some compositions could be compared with an opera song, like when the singers are duetting, and sometimes they sing together, but each one with different lyrics.
This one and also the Ayreon Universe live are wonderful shows, with partly different singers. Universe is a kind of best-of-Ayreon, were a few songs from every album were performed wheres the ITEC is one album (and a few extras) performed from start to finish. A lot of people tend to only recommend the songs with Floor, and the rest of Arjen's fantastic work gets overlooked. Don't get me wrong, she is an amazing singer and part of the Ayreon family, but there are so many others involved as well, and they are all doing an excellent job and should be appreciated.
