UPDATE
The Subaru 6 speed low spec transmision (not the one in the sti) is becomming more common as Subaru release more models with this fitted
The downside is the trans is not as tough as the Sti type 6 speed and often drivers are not aware.
In this video we show the inside of the transmission and how to save money plus how it works

5 speed wrx gearboxes, subaru should be ashamed.
the sti 6 speed though... that's a great gearbox.
nice video.
You need to do a full vid on the assembly.
What about the Spec B gearbox? I’m considering that swap into my 07 wrx because I don’t have to deal with DCCD wiring.
Hi Brett I hope you can find time to answer my question. I have a 2016 diesel XV, (UK spec) with a 6MT gearbox. I actually consider it the worst gear change I've ever experienced in a vehicle and I've driven series 2A Landrovers.
Anyway the problem is, is that the gearbox can bauk very easily on downshift and you then land up going say NOT from 5th to 4th gear, but from 5th to 2nd gear. Subaru would not do anything about it and it's now well out of warranty anyway. I've tried 2 other similar XV's and they were both better on gear change.
The clutch itself has to be depressed a long way to disengage and re-engages early (for want of a better word).
The local gearbox expert who has a good reputation, said it was the clutch that was built up wrongly from starters. When he tested the car with me as passenger, he said he was getting inconsistent clutch pedal pressure, and said that the clutch cover plate had been assembled wrongly. But Subaru still wouldn't wear it, and the main dealers wouldn't agree with me.
He also said the clutch would fail at 30K miles but it's now done over 40K.
I changed all the transmission oil to Redline products and there was an improvement in gear changing, but the gearbox still bauks. Also I can't get used to this stupid springing to the centre position, if you don't fully concentrate on gear changing all the time.
My previous car was a Fiat Punto 1.2 litre petrol and it had a lightning gear change, but there was also Redline oil in it's gearbox.
Recently a local mechanic who serviced my car said that the 6MT gearboxes were known for weak synchromesh, and said there was too many gears in the gearbox, which caused poor gear changing.
I have heard previously that even WRX's with 6MT gearboxes have the same problem.
One day i'll know this stuff inside out... find this very interesting coming from a very experienced bike mechanic
hey thats my car right there!!! thanks i learned a lot from this video.
Where can I buy upgraded gears like what you have done for the non sti 6mt, if i wanted too? I don't want to do a full
Sti drive train swap.
Just change the rear diff to match the gearbox
i have a 2008 legacy 3.0R with a 6 speed manual and I believe the viscous coupling is stuffed. it makes a harsh binding noise during tight turns once the car has been warmed and driven after 15mins. I need to get it fixed. any help or info appreciated.
Do you get few WRX sti owner with crunching gearboxes? Even a brand new STI makes crunching noise when shifting... I hear stories people denied warranty claims and dealers saying its due to *harsh driving. What would you say, I had my brand new STI definately crunching from 1st to 2nd gear
My 5-speed gearbox is in service right now (1st and 2nd gears are missing teeth and bearings have gone bad. They said it will cost me 3700€ to get it functional again. Im really mad i didnt buy an STI!
Omg I would repair that for you in England using all new genuine OEM parts for less than 500 euros parts and labour. Hell another 5 spd box won't even cost €600 euro plus labour max £200\€250 roughly
Couldn't find an used transmission. This is a small country and im nlt thta into ebay. New unused transmission was over 7000€. Yea i bet you could fix it for cheaper if you only replaced the essential parts but they reolased all sychros and bearings too which are surprisinly expencive. Labour was 1400€
thank you for posting this. very well explained.
do you have a video on the various Subaru transmissions and their differences? I have a JDM 97' WRX with the 5 speed with incredibly short gearing and I'm curious what options I have other than the STi 6 speed swap. Would a USDM 5 speed be an affordable option?
Hi Brent. Been watching your videos with great interest the last while and have to thank you for taking the time to make the videos.
After watching this video i have to ask.... Would a STI type 6 gearbox fit into a diesel car like the impreza for example ?
Cheers.
must be able to handle quite a bit of torque if its in a forester turbo diesel?
350nm torque in that
I'm guessing the STI transmission is pretty damn strong
My '08 Legacy GT's 5 spd is dying; was wondering if the 3.0r 6 speed would be an upgrade or if I should just get the Spec B turbo 6 speed?
I have a 04 STI with a fairly aggressive engine build, what would you suggest for transmission/drive shafts/axles/rear diff? I’m looking to do a full build in the drivetrain, thanks!
thanks
great vid brett,keep them coming.
very informative. thanks from Kenya!!
im looking to do a 5 to 6 speed swap and i want to know how to fit axles im looking sti's in the same year and newer wrx's .
i know that your diff needs the same gear ratio as your trans but how to tell if front axles and shaft will work one guy told me an automatic one will work and that guy said wrx would work on sti trans for the front axles
And thank you Thomas Terry
Just grab all the STI gear if you're going to do a swap.
Some people try to do it cheap by using a R160 diff with the 3.9 ratio so they can keep all their original gear, but the diff is a serious weak point after that.
You really want The gearbox, axels, hubs (to fit larger axels), tailshaft and diff
Also while you're at it get the diff mount and engine cross brace from the STI as they're made of thicker material.
Are the my11 gear boxes much stronger then earlier model wrx's
MY11 what?
this trans is not in a WRX
The wrx box has not changed much in many many years
Are these 6 speeds on the 2006 liberty 3.0rb ??
No, the 6-speeds in the 03-09 Libertys are the same basic style as the STi ones (the good style, not the 'split case'). They do not have some of the STi 6sp features like DCCD (driver controlled centre diff) - just a viscous centre diff, and do not have a limited-slip front diff. The 3.0 boxes have shorter gear ratios while the Liberty GT Spec B gearboxes have slightly longer gear ratios. The 03-09 Liberty 6-speeds are just as strong as an STi one.
Hi, I have a 2016 sti and was having shifter issues, like a little notch felling when going from 1st to 2nd and when going from 4th to 5th and 5th to 4th down shifting a little gear clashing sound. So I decided to change the shifter linkage bushing and got some COBB bushings. Then after installing them the transmission started sounding horrible from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th. My question is: is this normal or something inside is damaged? I suspect something is bent where the shifter cable attaches too, because I pulled very hard on him trying to install the bolt that goes through the bushing. Any ideas will be nice to read about. Thank you.
Uhhhh. You know the sti doesn’t have cable linkeage right?
They’re direct shift.
Great information, thanks! What year did Subaru update their 6 speed? I’m looking at picking up a 2012-2014 Forester 6-speed...but want the new design now.
instaBlaster.
What do you think of the strength of the new 6speed vs the old 5 speed?
we have not seen any fail (yet)
What transmission oil do you recommend for a 5 speed 2012 wrx?
yuriy zhuchkan oem
Awesome. Keep on making more videos:)
thanks :)
they are rare these days!
it CAN fit, but the ratios are all wrong :(
our car has 430 NM!
thats why we break them
:(
I assume so theres no way to change those ratios ? haha It seems if anyone can you can :P
lol if it's coming apart, all the bearings are being replaced!
10$ for the bearings
thanks
