Great video. I can go on for ages in this. Electrical items; Other than lights and a fridge this pretty well all u need a 12 volt system for. I say fridge cause in a remote situation you can’t get ice! As for an electric sandwich maker, travel buddy, coffee machine etc etc…you don’t need it…here u go why not try a fire lol So your 12v system can be as easy as a $80 dual battery system plus a $200 battery. If u can’t do the work yourself a mate will be able to help you and you will learn stuff. Camper trailer: They are good but if you need to finance it don’t bother get a $200 tent and $100 awning or $50 tarp and poles…job done and save petrol not towing something. Cooking: Open fire or Run with gas easy! The above comes from 30 years Outback experience. Now, however, when you have had all this experience set a budget and see what you need. A good camper trailer well setup will be welcomed, but remember one day you will need to sell it so look for quality. The Patriot Camper trailers have great resale value as do other quality campers. I have much more to say but hey I’ll let others put their opinions to your Video. By the way great video
I agree wholeheartedly with what you say. I often see people that travel long distances on a bicycle or motorcycle. Those are not my vehicle choices, but I have taken some of their solutions for 4wd camping.
I strongly agree with your take on this. I have a mate who dropped a grand or so on a basic 12V setup because he wanted a fridge to go camping.... but his car that he wired everything in to was 2wd. I have another mate recently got his first 4wd. He was talking lift and locker before even going off road for the first time. Neither of them really knew if camping/4wd is what they really wanted to spend time doing. Progressive upgrades!
What's wrong with putting a fridge in a 2WD haha. 2WD's will still get to like 98% of the country. Also did that cost include the battery and battery box? Pretty good value if so.
For me, it's not a need, it's a want. I can go camping with a tent, a gas bottle and stove, a battery powered camp light or head torch and an esky with ice in it. I don't need my 12v set up. I don't need a camper trailer. I wish I had the money for an X3 because it'd sure make camp life easier but it's not necessary.
Most things fall into the want category if we are really hard on ourselves. But if you can afford it and justify it to the better half then go to town I say.
Well said on everything mate, i started going out on the tracks with a 78 f100 2wd manual with a bench seat that i slept on, an esky with ice and more fun than with my 200.
In the late 60's most of Baja was conquered by local Mexicans in clapped out 2WD Ford F250's. You can do amazing things with the equipment you already own if that is all that is available to you. Desire and having to survive in the desert makes people very resourceful.
A lot of people like to feel part of a team and loyal to a brand because of what they see on social media even if they don't need it or can't really afford it. Patriot is on another level when it comes to marketing because they cater for the cashed up person that wants to feel part of their "family ".
Love your style Steve. There’s a lot to be said about the KISS method of camping. I like a bit of an extra here and there too though. The difference I think is the bloke with the manager30 and all the bells etc….when it stops working most have no idea where to start looking versus the old days…check battery, fuse and earth Everyone is in a hurry these days….travel buddy roast instead of early camp, fire and camp oven….you can’t enjoy the great outdoors if you’re always in a rush
I know ur differences with drifta i guess, but drifta has a current series on their channel doing the canning stock route. Long story short, there is an indigineous fella in tow with such a minimal setup, prolly didnt cost alot of money yet he is putting along doing the track just fine. Proving you just dont need much at all to do one of the longest most isolated tracks in the world.
Steve, just about everything you can bolt on is a want - bullbar is only justified for proper Outback on a farm where travelling during dusk and dawn is unavoidable- make it easy to put on driving light and CB antenna is marketing wants to tell you. Better approach angle is valid for some vehicle set up or you can use your max trax to build some track to help you - takes longer but very achievable for people who only encounter those obstacles only occasionally….. in assessing what’s needed, I alway use the Value For Money/ resources deployed equation - so spending $2300 /25-30kg to carry a set of 10kg max trax and a shove seem nuts to me, where a set a plywood rear drawer with integrated drawer fridge and a basic lithium setup is value for me because I use them every week when we have a family day out with shopping included- we don’t have to rush home to put the cold stuff in- It’s all about seriously trying to do more with less resources ($ and/or weight) deployed… How many caravans cost more than a brand new 300 series with all the tech and precision engineering marvel - the caravan is still as JC puts a poo carrying box, albeit a nice one - there is some seriously deficient VFM equation there
I'm half way through getting my Ute ready for off-roading and camping, I'm getting more then I need for camping but I have taken my time. If you are new to camping all you need is a vehicle to get you there, tent/swag for sleeping firepit/gas cooker an esky/fridge for food and drives plus some lights for night time, then add from there, oh yeah and a fishing rod to relax by the water
It’s nice to see all the top end accessories/ camping setups. I can see how they look and reviews before I purchase to set my vehicle up to suit my needs and budget. I believe my Mr Triton is setup nicely now for camping surf trips. It’s a big Thankyou to you and others like you. I also have pod coffee machine 🤙🤙
Hi me and my wife were actually talking about this very subject. We will be buying a new ranger and I was going to do the canopy thing with all the trimmings $45000. We watch ppl with them and hardly use it!!! So we have reconfigured and will spend about $14000 total!!!! But will still have most of what would have been in the canopy.
Nice honest conversations, I like it Steve. Our daughter & partner are starting to get into the camping. They have an older forester. So we modify we’re we go when we’re together. They have mt trusty esky, which won’t break down on them or run out of power. For me there is always a want list, but the truth is the need list nowadays is almost non existent
Thanks mate. I’m just trying to do exactly that. Have an open honest conversation with ppl. I think you’re right to an extent with the needs list. I’d say basic recovery gear and communication is prolly the needs. And almost everything else is a want
fair comments, over the years I have changed the way we camp from tent, swags, camping trailer, and now a poptop camping trailer. The only thing that hasn't changed is my car setup. 80 Series, 3" lift, bull bar, side bars, winch, rear drawers, cargo barrier and roof rack. I upgraded the brakes for the extra weight, and bigger tyres. Outside of that we still camping in all the different configs (tent, swags and camping trailer... etc) just depends on what we are doing. Unless I win the lotto, I don't see myself update anymore. I think its just a sign of the times, yes we need more out there. Just not the ones that are going to ruin it for us all, and its not all the younger ones either.
While I like to say “if you think camping is too hard, you’re doing it wrong” it is very easy to get carried away with new accessories and toys. I’ve saved a lot by making/doing it myself.
Do I need a 12v system? - No but I wanted it to run my fridge etc Do I need a fridge? - No but I wanted to replace the Esky & ice Do I need a 12v TV? - No but I like watching a movie before bed at night Do I need a bed in the car? - No but it is a lot more comfy than a tent or swag Do I need 2X UHF Radios? - No but it comes in handy for listening to Highway channels, convoy’s etc etc So I didn’t need it but I wanted it. A while back now I filmed a series called Getting Out There discussing exactly this sort of thing, how everyone and anyone can get out there and see more of this country without spending all the big bucks and buying all the gear they really don’t need. I started camping in a cheap Kmart tent on a cheap Kmart inflatable mattress and I still have them both although I rarely use them today. It is all well and good to see these mega builds to see what can be done and what is out there but people need to realize they do NOT need it all to get out there. A small cooler to keep food and drinks cold, somewhere safe and comfy to sleep, a shovel and dunny paper. Look at the guys that do Wild Camping, hiking in with all their gear on their back. They take minimal gear and still do it comfortably. There are a couple of UA-cam channels, although quite small trying to promote the smaller basic stuff. 4 Wheeling NSW for example and of course mine.
@Australian 4x4 Adventures and that's what's needed mate. I agree the marketing makes it feel like you can't do things without all the gear when really you can.
For us was a new Triton blackline 2018 41k 20k put into it. Were on our 3rd lap of oz we don't shy away from any remote area's acutely these are the places we explore the most. But what lm saying 61k has done it for us 👍
Haha. I’m noticing the same as I get older. I’d rather take more with me and be comfortable rather then waking up with a sore back for the next 3 days haha
I am trying to buy my brothers td42 gq off him, because the most fun I have ever had is a cheap patrol off road. No accessories just some suspension and tyres and it went anywhere. I got suckered into kitting out my brand new Nav and now I don't want to take it off road because of the expense of fixing it 😅
@Australian 4x4 Adventures 100%, my wife would nut me if I destroyed my new car. I think having a family tourer and a bush pig is a much better better way of doing it.
I think you got a very good point here. Just to know how does the pricing for some basic items compare in regards to what you will pay in a off-road store, than your local hardware ? I am from South Africa. If I want to buy a shovel form a off-road store is is almost 3x the price than I will pay for the exact product form my local hardware store.
There is a lot of new things on the market these days, some great and some superfluous. My opinion is give me a basic vehicle to get me from point A to point B. A decent tent, some sleeping gear, some cooking equipment, lighting and chairs, along with an esky. I am happy with that as that is what I have had for years and years. Personally I'd change needs to requirements.
I’ve done an esky in the back of the fourbie, I’ve done a DIY build and now I’m going all out - because I’m old now and I can. Do I need it? No. But I want it and I’ve worked my way up to it. Moral of the story is I’m not gonna be able to do anything I couldn’t do with my first 4x4. Just get out there in what you got.
Mate, honestly I love your videos & your take on all these issues. You're probably my favourite UA-camr. Really enjoy your content, always makes me laugh.
I remember the days when you use to put the esky swag and chainsaw on the back of the ute and you were set for a fun camping weekend , the “scene” has changed a lot and I have also fallen into this trap and then I stop and think hang on a sec why do I really need this shit lol
there's a big difference between want and need, I think that some people are keeping up with the jones's with their Toorak tractor, then some people genuinely need various gear to be able to do what they want to do. I like to get out gold prospecting in the high-country, camping and driving some of the tracks up here where i live so have a need for various gear to make things easier for me, certain comforts that I need so my 5 year old will come out with me. if she's not enjoying it she won't come so there's another need. each to their own, I love some of the extravagant set ups, but I can't justify spending that much money on something I probably won't use to its full potential.
Needs change drastically as you get older but I do understand the point about ads trying to turn wants into needs. I buy a ton of stuff I don't actually need. What happened to roo bars? That seems to be a good example of how advertising has morphed roo bars into something they are not. Bull bars exist on prime movers and other big trucks. The things on the front of 4x4s are roo bars. Why?, Try hitting a bull with one and see what happens :) John Cadogan's channel used to be awesome until he decided to turn it into one big advert for mostly unrelated products...
You’re right. The way things are advertised has definitely changed. I had noticed John’s videos are including a lot Of paid sponsored ads these days. I get it, it’s his full time gig so he needs to get paid somehow.
Well said Steve, mate all I saw at the brissy 4x4 show were ridiculous builds on American trucks, all of them had coffee machines and induction cookers! that you needed a ladder to reach them, that ain’t camping, keep keeping it real🤙
I took my 2018 Hilux on a few trips bone stock before I decided on anything. Now I have a canopy on the rear, and a base rack… 4 years after I bought the car…
I absolutely love it the way it is but because I use it for work and I carry about 450kg (minimum) daily and tow a trailer for work also I NEED to upgrade my suspension. Awesome video and perfect topic by the way !
Hey Steve if you need a hand with your lighting for future episodes, I'd be happy to come help you get setup. (As long as I'm free) might add some production value to your audience as well as help to avoid the blown out highlights. Good video though!
I’m guessing you do lighting stuff 😂. Yeah it’s always a challange trying to film in a shed at night with limited gear on hand to get it right. Msg me on insta or Facebook and we can talk through some ideas if that’s okay?
It always comes back to the basic saying: YOU DO YOU! Doesn't matter what Timmy down the road has - his setup suits HIM! Set yours up to suit you. I have friends that have the whole nine yards plus the kitchen sink and others that still camp in a tent with an esky and they're like pigs in shit - happy as. You do you! Simple!
Hopefully your message will get through to newcomers, for their own sake, it obviously makes no difference to the rest of us if they don't. I've been there and wasted money on new high end accessories which I didn't need. Learned from my mistakes with the next build and took my time buying used accessories which I felt I needed and new when used wasn't possible or sensible (e.g. suspension). Regardless, some people will only learn from their mistakes or will be happy wasting money for the sole purpose of posing. Thanks for the content Steve. Cheers
I totally get where you're coming from. My Landcruiser is probably one of a few handful of 80 Series around that regularly goes offroad that's still fitted with the factory steel bumper (albeit w/a factory JDM bumper guard), and factory rear bar (w/no rear tyre carrier), and no snorkel. My 4WDing style is mostly overlanding/touring and beach driving (not into hard-wheeling). And when travelling remote, I avoid driving after dark. Thus haven't had the need to fit a bullbar. But I do need a winch so that I can self-recover if I need to in places I go off-road like the VIC HC. I'd prefer to retain my factory steel bar and fit a winch behind it instead. I know this was an option in Japan for the 80 (and no where else). I've been looking for an after-market in-bumper winch cradle for the 80 for over 4yrs now, but I yet to find one in Australia for it. So if anyone knows of a bolt-on in-bumper winch cradle product for the 80 Series that's sold in Australia, please let me know. PS. Your volume is still a little low compared to the ads, but better than last time.
As you said in your video, they’re good at what they do. If you’re a company and you can convince people they need their product you’re in the right place.
I think it the decide how much you will use it. Once twice go cheap. Boat loads by the best. Maybe even split between mates. We take friends and campers and 90% of the time we use one set up lol and spread the load between us instead of getting bigger fridges.
Good video and even better message In my opinion, the influencer crowd have had a huge impact on the effect you're referring to - young, often attractive people who are given free product by big companies with deep pockets in order to sell a lifestyle to impressionable people, and as you say, the idea that you cannot partake in these activities without their products (yes, I'm looking at you Explore Life and your clown mates, All 4 Adventure, to a lesser degree Trip In a Van, Tyler Thompson, etc). And I'm guilty myself! It wasn't until I realized I was chasing something that would never end, and that's when I unfollowed a TON of accounts on all social platforms, and got back to focusing on what's really important - just getting out there. I also stopped tagging locations in my posts. The accounts I follow these days are those producing more simple, genuine content, without all the hype and BS. Sorry for ranting. Thanks for sharing.
Camping with a family (i think) is completely different and does require more equipment. Like a fridge... gotta keep the kids happy. But 100% agree with this
Fantastic video, the more there is the more you want "to fit in" with the influencers. Most buy the good gear n stop due to changes in life then sell when hardly used. Would be more beneficial to go the Kings route n then work out what you actually need. I think the closing of the tracks is more about disrespectful use than high use
I think kings/4wd super centre is a great place to start your camping needs, wants list ,not everyone can afford a $800 swag ,and who knows you might get all the gear and then realize that camping to you is a 3 star motel,so you might have just saved yourself $5k in big brand gear by buying only $500 of kings products
I love doing a super light trip with just car fridge swag gas can cooker simple food.. but as already said take the family we have a 14.5 foot caravan and more comfortable things..
Great video and spot on most only need a 4x4 a tent and an esky to get out there ,Ive done that for many many years , now have the more plush setup like you. ps the travel buddy has been around for 25 years at least , use to camp with the inventor they were pretty costly back then now more affordable but the cheapish rip offs don't deserve your money as he put allot of time into its development they didn't!
Theres plenty of good videos out there on the minimum you need to get started camping and really anything above that is a want or a personal preference
Sounds like what you believe are your needs are really wants. Instead of bullbar, you can look at a hidden winch mount. Instead of a winch, you can choose not to do a track that will require one. You are wanting to do that track. That has nothing to do with camping. You don’t need a long range tank, you can carry Jerry’s in the back. You don’t need sliders, you can choose a different light or track. You want to avoid sill damage, you don’t need to. Once again, has nothing to do with camping, more to do with where you WANT to drive. 😜
Hahaha. It’s all very subjective isn’t it. Some ppls needs are other ppls wants which is what makes it a very cool subject to have a discussion about. And like yourself. I’m all off getting whatever you want if you can afford it. Go nuts I say haha
Alot of people will go buy a brand new vehicle then get all of the accessories on finance. That's probably why so many buy the whole catalogue. Actually owning your bus is getting less common.
I love reading these comments. Hahahaha I love this. I see it every review, every recommendation on all the socials. People ask what should i do or buy, I say get out there and enjoy everything. hahaha
That moment when one realises they've added so much crap to the vehicle that it's become a pain in the arse and now they want to remove it all haha. Let's be real though, the best trips are the one where you have just a backpack and some basic camping gear.
When I had my 4x4, i looked into joining a club, but I found when I turned up to checkout the people and what they do in the club, as soon as they find out, OH you have a Vitara, OH it's still original, OH it doesn't have a lift kit and it just goes on and on, NO ONE wants to know you or talk to you because they don't want to be THE ONE SEEN talking to a so called loser like me and my car. SO, I just gave up and did my own thing. Little did they know, or care probably I've been a mechanical and automotive engineer all my life and I'm now 66, but I was judged on my vehicle not me as a person. Sorry for the rant, I know it's off topic. Seeya Rob. I suppose it's about joining clubs, do you need to or do you want to !!!
I’ve been in and out of 4wd clubs and groups for years and I fully agree with you. It becomes more of a D%+{ size competition. Rather then just some mates having a good time in their own choice of 4wd. So I definitely get where you are coming from
I agree, pompus fkn wankas. U rock up with a paid in cash set up and these club wankas look down their nose while they paying the loan off. Stuff being in a 4wd club.
Ok Steve. Firstly “LOOK DOWN HERE! COMMENT!” I’ve paused exactly where you’ve told me to and here’s what I think. On our cars we “need” the modifications that will get us to where we “want” to go camping. In regards to camping products we “need” the minimum of products that will give us the level of comfort we “want”. In other words, it’s completely subjective. Personally? My basic mods on my 105 are 2” lift, 33” AT’s, bull bar, drawers, 270 awning, fridge and freezer. That gets me everywhere I want to go and achieve the comfort level I want when I get there. I sleep in a swag. I’m happy. People may need less to get what they want, some may need more to get what they want. I camped the first time in a Kluger and a tent. My wants evolved, so I needed more. BUT! Reality is we “can” camp with bugger all. Would we enjoy?🤔.
That’s exactly my point. Some ppls minimum is different to others. But some ppl fall into the trap of glossy magazines and just buy everything from cover to cover because they are a bit gullible to think that is the minimum. Just trying to help the new players to the game
I used what’s on my car because that what I had photos of. And if I used photos of random ppls cars they’d prolly get upset with me. But I do get what you are saying by calling it a highlight reel.
@@Australian4x4Adventures yep on the first video im like Luke!!! its way to heavy bro......sure enough video 2...dumping water lol...he must know someone who makes bags?? bahah
i think todays marketing is not about needs and wants. Everything especially on you tube is about "ultimate". The ultimate 4wd, The ultimate Camper ect. and when you want to feel you have the best(Ultimate) , you then buy that Option. I purchased a Patriot Camper based on that, It is probably not the only ultimate camper but many in the industry think it is due to the you tube vids and awards won. There is also the Kudos factor, My previous camper attracted zero attention , However, the Patriot is always the centre of conversation wherever I go. more so than my 4WD. Do I really do extreme off road to justify the patriot, the answer is NO. I use it for touring on dirt and gravel roads, but take great comfort in it being built to handle the hardcore stuff. So I know the camper will always be performing well within its limits.
All you need is a tank of fuel, too many people spend to much time and money, modifying cars than using them, my build now vs my first car is totally different, my rear drawer/12v setup cost more than my first 4by, but I have just as much fun now as I did then, it’s just a bit more comfy nowadays
If I had the coin, I'd be first in line for one of everything 😂 Reality is I don't, so I rough it when I go camping. A 12v system and fridge would be a pleasant upgrade to the overall experience. Every time I go, I buy / fix something to improve the experience. Over time, the setup will develop into something to be proud of. I'm a big believer in keeping it basic and then working towards improving the areas that need it.
And that’s exactly how my first few setups went as well. Slow and stedy and before ya know it you’ve got something that’s super useful but hasn’t cost the world
To me they are luxury items not all of us can afford them they are more a like not a need a tent and trap is all we have and a 7x4 trailer easy setup 😉
All the things you say you needed were because they enabled you to get or do things you want. Ultimately all of it is because you want it. Unless you’re part of an SES rescue team.. you’re just a hobbyist no matter how much you think you “need” it 😂
Haha. You’re mostly correct and that’s pretty much the sentiment I was trying to get across. But I do also do professional recovery for the ORC ( rally cars ) and other organization 4wd events. So some of it is actually required for those jobs.
If you have kids ! a travel buddy oven is 100 percent a NEED the amount of money you will save on takeaway food you will be able to pay off you home and buy another car to put a travel buddy in 😂
Maybe in influencer world everyone has to be better than the last but surely the average person has common sense and knows you don’t need everything to have a good time? I think most price points of the market are being covered as we have brands like kings ect, then you have mid range and high end stuff too. Also I think there’s a difference with companies like patriot, arb ect who influence, will build something to get the attention of customer and it will be over the top with all the options and that’s what you expect them to do, Compared with a influencer like say Ronny Dahl who doesn’t make anything to sell and wants to appear like the average punter but is selling with what he “likes/gets for free/get cheap ect” and he/they will say you don’t need everything yet here they are with fully decked out cars, and I think that may mislead people if they can’t see though it, but I guess it all comes back to common sense.
The problem with common sense is that it’s not that common anymore. I think the d$@( size competition is there in all circles. I’ve been in 4wd clubs before where it was all about who had the biggest and the best new gear.
I agree the 4wd scene 5+ years ago was about getting a car chucking ya esky and swag in for the weekend and pissing off with ya mates and doing some tracks and having fun now it’s turned into this shit, wank factor competition with all this unnecessary shit that you carry around on your daily driver and never even use, scenes full of flogs
There’s obviously people who need this stuff otherwise patriot etc wouldn’t be successful. Then there’s kings for people who want it but can’t afford it.
Thanks for the feedback. But I’m happy with my credibility. A clickbait style thumbnail has nothing to do with my credibility, the content within the video does. There’s a difference. But as I said. Thanks for the feedback
Haha. To an extent yeah. A lot of ppl like myself let themself fall for the advertising tricks because it’s something that makes them happy and that’s perfectly fine. I’m mainly trying to point this stuff out to the new comers to the game
Hahaha. I did say at the very start I’ve fallen for all of the advertising tricks and I will happily fall again because I just like having a car like I do 😝 And if you can afford it then go to town with it. This was more a lessen for the new players
Great video.
I can go on for ages in this.
Electrical items;
Other than lights and a fridge this pretty well all u need a 12 volt system for.
I say fridge cause in a remote situation you can’t get ice!
As for an electric sandwich maker, travel buddy, coffee machine etc etc…you don’t need it…here u go why not try a fire lol
So your 12v system can be as easy as a $80 dual battery system plus a $200 battery.
If u can’t do the work yourself a mate will be able to help you and you will learn stuff.
Camper trailer:
They are good but if you need to finance it don’t bother get a $200 tent and $100 awning or $50 tarp and poles…job done and save petrol not towing something.
Cooking:
Open fire or Run with gas easy!

I’m on the look out for a cheap old 4wd just to use as a bush pig. Just because they are so much fun and so much cheaper
A lot of people like to feel part of a team and loyal to a brand because of what they see on social media even if they don't need it or can't really afford it. Patriot is on another level when it comes to marketing because they cater for the cashed up person that wants to feel part of their "family ".
That’s actually a really good way of describing it. Well said.
Big companies only want your wallet and savings to be part of the family, not the consumer.
Love your style Steve. There’s a lot to be said about the KISS method of camping. I like a bit of an extra here and there too though.

Yeah I’ve seen a few of those videos and I noticed how minimalist his setup was.
Just proves my point.

Steve, just about everything you can bolt on is a want - bullbar is only justified for proper Outback on a farm where travelling during dusk and dawn is unavoidable- make it easy to put on driving light and CB antenna is marketing wants to tell you. Better approach angle is valid for some vehicle set up or you can use your max trax to build some track to help you - takes longer but very achievable for people who only encounter those obstacles only occasionally….. in assessing what’s needed, I alway use the Value For Money/ resources deployed equation - so spending $2300 /25-30kg to carry a set of 10kg max trax and a shove seem nuts to me, where a set a plywood rear drawer with integrated drawer fridge and a basic lithium setup is value for me because I use them every week when we have a family day out with shopping included- we don’t have to rush home to put the cold stuff in-
It’s all about seriously trying to do more with less resources ($ and/or weight) deployed…
How many caravans cost more than a brand new 300 series with all the tech and precision engineering marvel - the caravan is still as JC puts a poo carrying box, albeit a nice one - there is some seriously deficient VFM equation there
I'm half way through getting my Ute ready for off-roading and camping, I'm getting more then I need for camping but I have taken my time.
Wants and Needs
I wanted to go camping
So I needed a new 4x4 with all the accessories available 😂
Hahaha. If that’s the way you can justify it then that’s all you need 😂
fair comments, over the years I have changed the way we camp from tent, swags, camping trailer, and now a poptop camping trailer.
And I think a lot of ppl have lost the skills of making their own gear because it’s cheaper and easier to just buy stuff.
Love and what you’re doing every time I talk to one of my mates. This is exactly what I say you don’t need everything Keep it up 👍
Do I need a 12v system? - No but I wanted it to run my fridge etc
Do I need a fridge? - No but I wanted to replace the Esky & ice
Do I need a 12v TV? - No but I like watching a movie before bed at night
Do I need a bed in the car? - No but it is a lot more comfy than a tent or swag
Do I need 2X UHF Radios? - No but it comes in handy for listening to Highway channels, convoy’s etc etc
So I didn’t need it but I wanted it.
That’s the basic premise of the video.
Trying to get ppl out and about with what they have rather then what they think they need
But what lm saying 61k has done it for us 👍
Used to camp really basic, me age now determines my needs now. Comfort is something I both want and need. No more tents and sleeping on the ground.
I got suckered into kitting out my brand new Nav and now I don't want to take it off road because of the expense of fixing it 😅
Ohhh I feel ya.
I’m keeping an eye out for a cheap bush big to just go have fun in
@Australian 4x4 Adventures 100%, my wife would nut me if I destroyed my new car.
Thanks mate. Means a lot to know ppl actually like what I put out.
Thanks for watching and for letting me know you like it.
I had noticed John’s videos are including a lot
Of paid sponsored ads these days.
I seen the same stuff at the melb show and 99.99% of ppl could never achieve that.
But it’s still cool that it’s possible
I need very little, but I do want toys.
Exactly. And alot of ppl have blurred those lines with some great marketing.
You'd probably need to learn to wheel before you go and buy any toys
@@rockcrawler31 you taught me all I know. 😂 main reason I need to learn to wheel. 🤣🤣🤣
ARB, the original king of marketing in the 4WD space. Patriot have definitely nailed their niche too
So many people talk crap, thank you for being so honest
Me talking honestly gets me in trouble sometimes 😂
Camping ⛺️ used to be tent, blow up mattress, gas bottle, torch, sleeping bag , $1k
Totally agree. And that’s part of my discussion
Patriot are great at what they do but the prices of their camper trailers very expensive in my opinion.
I’d buy one if I could afford one haha. But like yourself. I find them very expensive
I took my 2018 Hilux on a few trips bone stock before I decided on anything. Now I have a canopy on the rear, and a base rack… 4 years after I bought the car…
And you’re prolly just as happy as ppl who have spend 50-60k on their car.
I absolutely love it the way it is but because I use it for work and I carry about 450kg (minimum) daily and tow a trailer for work also I NEED to upgrade my suspension.
Awesome video and perfect topic by the way !
I take the family camping like it’s the 80’s most of the time buggar all tech and the kids absolutely love it
I know someone who use to have a coffee machine in his 200 series 🤣
Another great Video mate... I think it is all a combo of Need, Want & Can Afford 👍
I never had a coffee machine in my 200 haha.
I do in my camper and caravan but 😝
Hey Steve if you need a hand with your lighting for future episodes, I'd be happy to come help you get setup.
Cheers
100%. Who really needs a set of spoties that you can read a paper at 2000mt or a switch panel that out does most air planes.
Haha. Ya never know when ya ganna need to light up ya mates newspaper 2km away haha
@fatmanoverlanding ..... why don't you get someone to fab one up??
I’ve never understood the patriot “campers” 70k+ for basically a carpenters trailer with a rooftop tent is beyond crazy.
They are expensive I agree but damn they are nice haha. If I could justify the money I’d have one
As you said in your video, they’re good at what they do. If you’re a company and you can convince people they need their product you’re in the right place.
Their quality isn't that great. Wobbly kitchens etc.
I think it the decide how much you will use it.
Once twice go cheap.
Boat loads by the best.
Maybe even split between mates.
We take friends and campers and 90% of the time we use one set up lol and spread the load between us instead of getting bigger fridges.
Good video and even better message
In my opinion, the influencer crowd have had a huge impact on the effect you're referring to - young, often attractive people who are given free product by big companies with deep pockets in order to sell a lifestyle to impressionable people, and as you say, the idea that you cannot partake in these activities without their products (yes, I'm looking at you Explore Life and your clown mates, All 4 Adventure, to a lesser degree Trip In a Van, Tyler Thompson, etc).
Hahaha. Nah I’m all for a good rant haha. Keep them comin.
I’m not naming names but agree with you on those ppl 😂
Camping with a family (i think) is completely different and does require more equipment.
Like a fridge... gotta keep the kids happy.
But 100% agree with this
Fantastic video, the more there is the more you want "to fit in" with the influencers. Most buy the good gear n stop due to changes in life then sell when hardly used. Would be more beneficial to go the Kings route n then work out what you actually need. I think the closing of the tracks is more about disrespectful use than high use
Education on both levels would help
@@Australian4x4Adventures 100%, if only people would take it
I think kings/4wd super centre is a great place to start your camping needs, wants list ,not everyone can afford a $800 swag ,and who knows you might get all the gear and then realize that camping to you is a 3 star motel,so you might have just saved yourself $5k in big brand gear by buying only $500 of kings products
100% correct.
I would rather go camping in garbage bag than buy any Kings product.
If you get dry ice you can get way longer out of an esky
Yeah I’ve seen a few ppl use it. Looks like a good option
I don't have a coffee machine, at all. Stovetop perculator at home, and I take it camping!
Theres plenty of good videos out there on the minimum you need to get started camping and really anything above that is a want or a personal preference
Boil the billy in the morning for the thermos. Tea and coffee at lunch.
Recovery points? Spotlights?
Snorkel?
Sounds like what you believe are your needs are really wants.
Instead of bullbar, you can look at a hidden winch mount. Instead of a winch, you can choose not to do a track that will require one. You are wanting to do that track. That has nothing to do with camping.
You don’t need a long range tank, you can carry Jerry’s in the back.
You don’t need sliders, you can choose a different light or track. You want to avoid sill damage, you don’t need to.
Once again, has nothing to do with camping, more to do with where you WANT to drive. 😜
That said, there is nothing wrong with wants, if you can afford it. I want and I have bought.
Hahaha. It’s all very subjective isn’t it.
Some ppls needs are other ppls wants which is what makes it a very cool subject to have a discussion about.
And like yourself. I’m all off getting whatever you want if you can afford it. Go nuts I say haha
I’ve seen plenty of stock vehicles your all over the Vic High Country, cross the Simpson, do the OTT, Creb, Frenchman’s.
I'm fairly sure that the whole accessory market for 4WDs is designed to sell GVM upgrades, lol...
Hahaha. 100%. My car’s currently at the shop getting a GVM upgrade as we speak haha
Depends. If my wife asks, then yes, I need it all. NEED IT ALL 😂😂😂
My great fear is my wife sells my stuff for what I said it was worth rather then what it’s actually worth 😂
Alot of people will go buy a brand new vehicle then get all of the accessories on finance. That's probably why so many buy the whole catalogue.
Actually owning your bus is getting less common.
I love reading these comments. Hahahaha I love this. I see it every review, every recommendation on all the socials. People ask what should i do or buy, I say get out there and enjoy everything. hahaha
I’ve got a Patriot X1 for sale. Cheapest in the country but at $23k I can’t sell it. Go figure!
At 23k I’d almost buy it 😂. I like the patriot concept.
That moment when one realises they've added so much crap to the vehicle that it's become a pain in the arse and now they want to remove it all haha.
Let's be real though, the best trips are the one where you have just a backpack and some basic camping gear.
Depends…. What type of camper are you.
Absolutely correct. Everyone has different requirements and needs.
I just wanted to open ppls eyes to the difference sometimes
So I definitely get where you are coming from
Totally agree. Went on a quick trip with most of the people in lifted patrols. Was laughed at as had a Prado 90. Total bunch of wankers...
@@Australian4x4Adventures and you did exceptionally well.👍

And if I used photos of random ppls cars they’d prolly get upset with me.
But I do get what you are saying by calling it a highlight reel.

Todays language;
WANT = something you want.
NEED = something you really really reaaaaallly want!
Hahaha. Exactly right. 😂
i think todays marketing is not about needs and wants.
I justify my new camping/car purchases to my wife as ‘safety items’. The trick is arguing why luxuries are really safety items. 😄
Yes to keep the minister of home affairs happy.
Hahaha. Most definitely true.
@@Australian4x4Adventures good stuff!

Hahaha. Thanks mate.
I’m not actually giving patriot a hard time.
@@Australian4x4Adventures oh I know. It just made me laugh so hard.
I think Kinga have cornered that market
Absolutely they have
Maybe in influencer world everyone has to be better than the last but surely the average person has common sense and knows you don’t need everything to have a good time?
You lost me at the travel buddy. If you really, really, really want something, that's a need isn't it? I use it more than my winch. 🙂
Do you need the mods you have done? Clearly yes as didnt use it without 😅😂
Haha. I fully admit in the video that I’ve done stuff just because I WANTED them rather then needing them hahaha.
@@Australian4x4Adventures so bad mouthing yourself and others why? Clicks and likes?
I’m not bad mouthing anyone. I’m not sure what video you watched
There all wants, until you need them 🙂
And that’s where I’m trying to get ppl to think about what they WILL need at some point vs just wanting it
It's wank factor. Lot 4wd never get offroad but they got everything on it just to make them look good. A 4wd is made go offroad not a show pony.
Pretty much exactly my point. You don’t need all the gear to get places.
There’s obviously people who need this stuff otherwise patriot etc wouldn’t be successful. Then there’s kings for people who want it but can’t afford it.
Just saying if I had f you money I would have a Patriot x1N just for when I go on night by myself and boys nights.
Oh trust me. I’d definitely be buying a patriot camper as well if I had the coin haha 😂
bit like asking what percentage of winches fitted to 4wd ever actually get used for recovery
I’d say about 1% 😂
The bloody Leyland brothers didnt need all this crap to go camping . Keep it simple
That video was so click bait you are loosing credibility
Thanks for the feedback.
But I’m happy with my credibility.
A clickbait style thumbnail has nothing to do with my credibility, the content within the video does.
There’s a difference.

Hahaha. I did say at the very start I’ve fallen for all of the advertising tricks and I will happily fall again because I just like having a car like I do 😝
And if you can afford it then go to town with it.
This was more a lessen for the new players
