John Henry Bonham passed away September 25, 1980 alcohol overdose. They felt that they could no longer perform as a bad because of his loss. It would be unfair to ask another drummer to do what he did for the band. Two weeks later, they gave the official notice. They were no longer perform together as Led Zeppelin.
Not quite. They had four reunion performances. The first one was Live Aid (with Tony Thompson and Phil Collins on drums and Paul Martinez on bass) and the second was at the 40th anniversary of Atlantic Records (with John's son Jason on drums), both of which they were ashamed by, because Plant and Page especially weren't on top form. The third one was two sets at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, which turned out ok (the first set was with Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Jason and the second with Neil Young and Michael Lee, drummer from the Page & Plant project). The last reunion gig, which they found much better, was at the O2 in London in 2007 in tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, boss of Atlantic Records, and again with Jason Bonham on drums. This was released as a live album called Celebration Day five years later.
Led Zeppelin in the studio, and particularly on stage were like a beast with four bodies and only a single head, so in tune with each other were they. During concerts, they always had one track where the middle section was extended into an unplanned 'jam'. Robert Plant might sing a few lines from an old blues song he sort of remembered, and Page would instantly chime in with the melody and key changes. John-Paul Jones was excellent enough that he could keep up with them. Other times, the roles would reverse, and Page would toss in a few random bars from another old blues standard, to see how Plant would respond. All of the time John Bonham thundered away behind them, never missing a beat. When Bonzo died in 1980, they knew it was over, and they stopped. They could bring in another drummer to 'learn' the parts, but it could never be the same again. Page & Plant actually went on to collaborate on an 'unplugged' project of old LZ material. John-Paul Jones was not involved, which DID cause a little animosity. My personal opinion is that they did not want all of the hoop-lah of a 'Led Zeppelin reunion' tour. Robert Plant has continually refused vast sums of cash for a 'reunion'. He just isn't interested in being a 'Led Zeppelin Tribute' band, particular as, being old [70+ yrs ] men, they can't perform to the levels they once did. There are times when nostalgia should be left in the closet. They performed at 'Live Aid' in Philadelphia in 1985, with Phil Collins [ no mean drummer himself ]. It is widely regarded as a disaster, partly down to lack of rehearsal, but possibly also that lack of 'chemistry'. The 2007 concert at London's O2 arena was a tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records, their first label. They had John Bonham's son Jason on drums. There were literally millions of applications for the couple of hundred thousand tickets for the single show. The only other time I can recall them playing live all together was when they were belatedly inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. On the video, you can see the fear in the eyes of the [respected] players who were due to perform with them, as Jimmy, Robert & John Paul literally wrote the set list as they walked up the steps onto the stage. That's how good they were.
This particular piece of genius is from the first album released in 1969. I think you need to know that to assess the originality of it. Robert Plant was 19 whe he was singing this , the guitar in this is Spanish Style ( flamenco) . All four of them were in bands from around 14 and went right through the sixties gaining experience and knowledge so when Jimmy Page formed the band they were ready to go. Plant and Page have astonishing on stage chemistry and that is a life long friendship, they have collaborated repeatedly since led zep split - particularly good album walking into Clarksdale. They did a one off re union concert called Celebration day in the 02 arena London in the mid 2000s with John Bonham's son Jason on drums . reputedley 20 million people applied for tickets . you could try Kashmir from that concert - they were still awesome. What is coming up in February is the cinema release ( imax) of there authorised biography - becoming led zeppelin. This received 10 minute standing ovations when it premiered at the Venice film festival. Jimmy Page is in charge and in jimmy Page we trust , We are quivering with anticipation. I think thats what you gentleman need to see . If you haven't already done it there was a Heart peformance of stairway to heaven at the Kennedy Centre fro 2012 in front of led Zeppelin, to honour them again with Jason Bonham on drums - which is unmissable , Plant is moved to tears . If you want to hear some of their folk style stuff then Battle of evermore , Gallows Pole or Bron y aur stomp . This is the band you will want to hear every track from every album.
This is a cover of a Joan Baez song, but even she did not write it and the original credit goes to Anne Bredon. Baez had originally credited it as 'Traditional'. Since 1990, the writing credits have been listed as Bredon /Page /Plant. Page's part was in the arrangement, and the introduction of that hard rock riff, which later re-emerged on Chicago's ' 25 or 6 to 4 '.
Plant and Page did some stuff together after the split. JPJ was the one who struggled with the Rock life style. Still married to the same lady he married ,i believe in the early 70s. The drummer died in 1980 and the guys didnt want to play without him
The band broke up when John Bonham died I belive in 1980.the band didn't feel that they could go on without him as they were all masters and together made the fire...there's so much info.out there..the greatest band ever in the world..there has never been another as authentic as Led Zeppelin. .I grew up with them and so grateful to what they brought to the world..every song is so different.❤❤❤❤ can't say enough
They broke up in 1980 because Bonham passed away suddenly, they cut their tour off. They decided to all go their own way. They got together for Celebration day back in 2000s with Bonhams son Jason filling in for his dad. You should watch that live performance of Kashmir on Celebration Day. It's on UA-cam. Spectacular!🎉
Led Zeppelin were the fathers of modern rock. Nothing like this came before 1968 when they formed. They have influenced everything that came after them. They ruled the 70s rock scene particularly in the US where they toured extensively showing their iconic stage performances which would last 3 to 4 hours. They disbanded in 1980 when their legendary drummer John Bonham died. The three remaining members carried on in the music world coming together again in 2007 for a concert in the UK where 20,000 people applied for tickets on the first day of sale. These four awesome musicians continue to be regarded by most other musicians as the greatest band ever.
You too guys really don’t know your musical history. John Bonham died in 1981 Zepplin had to stop the other 3 said we can’t keep on going if John is not here you should’ve known that. Jump on his son Jason came back to play with them on a special gig at the O2 in London Trying to get tickets for it was impossible the computer used to breakdown because it couldn’t cope with an amount of people trying to get tickets Guys, I know you’re younger than me. I’m 68 now. I live with this band as I was going through my early teenage years just like some of the greatest bands of all time. I think I’ve seen them all except for Zack because I couldn’t get anywhere near buying a ticket .. Yes, you’re right. There are lots of bands that have continued in their old age just like the Rolling Stones, but they’ve lost a couple of people. A lot of people have died since I was a teenager put the music as lived on .
Led Zeppelin stopped performing when John Bonham died. The group knew that no other drummer could replace John Bonham because he was the best rock drummer in the world. Without John the group could not continue and took the decision to stop instead of continuing with another inferior drummer for the money.
You are talking out of your ____. I love talk and speculation on topics, yet on the hand an innocent remark like this can birth a conspiracy, followed by someone picking it up and running with it like it is some undisclosed hidden secret. Time to watch a few Led Zeppelin documentaries. Maybe watch the intro and history by Jack Black at the Kennedy Center Awards for a better understanding. Not disrespect meant.
My favorite band since 1969 ❤
A deep cut is Tea for One ❤
Such an emotional vocal delivery by Plant on this one. Hits hard.

GREAT track 👍😁👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts ❤
Can I politely point out the 70s was the coolest decade. With the 60s close.
Best decade was probably 1965 to 1974
Yes!!
