I'm a retired licensed practical nurse who worked in the nursing home industry some years ago. That horrible sinking feeling when one of your patients dies, compounded by multiple people dying is demoralising. We know we give our all to try and save patients, but nontheless, our hearts just bottom out. We are expected to front up to others as being on top of our game and in charge of ourselves and emotions. Expectation to show we are not effected by what has just happened to the previous patient cannot be understood unless in our shoes. I admire each and everyone of our colleagues in the Front line. I honour and respect you all. Bless each and everyone of you.

I started working in the ER at my Indian reservation in Arizona when the pandemic first hit. I’ve seen many patients get intubated, go into code blue, heard many rapid responses over the intercoms. We’re in a very small town in Arizona we could only do so much so flying our patients to nearby cities which are Phoenix and Tucson both equally a 2 hour drive from me, we always wonder if the patient will get there safe and sound if they get into cardiac arrest. I’m still working there to this day and nothing has not changed since I’ve started. Everyday is definitely not the same but I always thank my colleagues, the nurses, the physicians, the ER techs, the pharmacists, the respiratory therapists, the radiology team. I thank every single one of them for always trying their best for my people… 💗

My father died last December 27, 2021. He was hospitalized with Covid-19 after 18 days they moved him to intensive care saying he needed more oxygen. As soon as they put him on the ventilator he had a heart attack. They brought him back but he had a second heart attack and they were not able to bring him back. My dad was so hopeful to get the vaccine before he caught COVID. We had hope he would be able to get out of the hospital alive because he was doing okay but suddenly he needed more oxygen. Seeing this video makes me realize on the hard work of all medical personnel also I imagine how my father was afraid and alone when they incubated him as well all the other patients that go through the same and ended up dead. It’s been very hard to cope with his loss along with the loss of 4 more other family members. I hope people take care of themselves and get vaccinated. Thank you for telling the story of these brave individuals. I was moved to tears. I am one of those who has been diligent about wearing my mask, washing my hands and social distancing. I still got COVID-19 from a high risk of death family member that I thought was taking the same precautions. I was angry, wounded. It caused a major rift in our relationship. I trusted them. We talked ALL the time about the precautions & how to keep each other safe. They were the person for whom I was diligently taking all these precautions. Their life was more important to me than seeing my friends, eating out, all the inconvenience I suffered with mask wearing & sanitizing everything. And yet, my life was not as important to them. I had all the consequences. My workplace was shut down immediately for cleaning. A third of my coworkers were quarantined for 14 days. The other 2/3 were overworked during those 14 days. My employer graciously paid all of those who were quarantined. The cost to my employer was huge! My loved one & I will eventually move past this, but the disappointment, anger, pain, frustration, fear, devastation, sense of betrayal, is overwhelming at this moment in time. I have been sicker than my loved one. I am the one who can’t seem to shake the vestiges of this virus even though I had a “minor” case. I am angry!

I sure hope that they now have all the N95 masks, shields, googles, gowns, gloves, and any other PPE they need. It was wretched to see them without those critical supplies. It is obscene and immoral that hospitals and states were having to bid against each other for these very basic supplies. The Bronx is very fortunately to have such a great hospital with such an incredible staff working so hard to save their lives.

I was first diagnosed with COVID-19 last July, I was immediately hospitalized and didn’t come out until mid-October after 7 weeks in ICU, 15 days on a ventilator, an LTAC stay, and many days where my life just hung in the balance. If I hadn’t crashed while visiting the hospital on other business, I would absolutely not have a positive outcome. I went from running with my daughter, 4 days later I was fighting for my life on a ventilator. I still get flashbacks to when I was in the hospital on the vent, hallucinating, and a dear death experience. During one of the codes, the only thing I could think of was that “this what it is like to die. But what am I dying of? Cancer, heart attack, COVID-19?” All I knew was that I was dying. I still ask family questions about certain sequence of events. A lot of it still remains a jumbled mess inside my brain.
I’ve been fundamentally changed by COVID. While I’d otherwise watch a video about this, I find that I can’t watch them because I still internalize this way too much. It’s like PTSD. Maybe one day I can, but right now, 7 months later it’s still tough to handle. I’m coming to terms with the fact that I’ll never run again and that I’ll probably never get off oxygen. Still, I’m alive, but it’s a lot to contend with.
Thank you so much healthcare workers! Because of your valiant efforts, my husband has his wife, and my 14-year-old daughter has her mom back. I want to say a special “thank you” to Adam, the COVID ICU nurse who literally held my hand for several nights because I was so terrified of dying alone.

I love "Dr. Love"! Mary and I knew each other when we worked out together at the Vince Lombardi Center on the Bronx campus of Fordham University in the Summer of 1986. She was then and still is an exceptional human being. I regret that I let her get away from me but the world is truly a better place because of her talents as an M.D. Even then I knew that she was my superior and that she would achieve her goal of being the medical professional that she is today while I failed to achieve my goal of being an attorney. Oh well one less shyster in the world won't hurt but the Bronx will miss her if and when she decides to retire. I hope that you read this tribute to you from me and that someday before I die that you will honor me by accepting a very tempting dinner offer that I will cook for you. I make a delicious and healthy chicken Parmigiana that even the late Rush Limbaugh would have enjoyed had he accepted it. All kidding aside it would be my honor to cook for you and one guest of your choice. My brother will be your official host for the occasion-----I'm just the cook and the entertainment! I hope to hear from soon. Gino
