      The higher the hair the closer to God. I believe the shoulder pads were a result of shows like Dynasty. I had a guy who was a good friend back then who had it bad for Nancy Wilson. Great song!

    Anne and Nancy are two beautiful ladies. I love these songs, but I hate how these record companies hid Anne from us just because she was getting heavier. I can only imagine how she felt when she was told they would only be using her in a limited way in these videos. She was a mom by this time and in her mid to late thirties and to expect her to look like a teenage girl is a shame. A goddess with a voice like this shall always be revered as a goddess no matter how she looks.

    This was one of my favourite songs in 1985. I was only 9, but i was just learning piano and discovering I liked to sing, and their voices and harmonies were inspirational for us young girls.

    I read a story that Nancy was dealing with a cold when she came in to record the lead vocals. She didn't think she'd sound particularly good, but the producers loved the little rasp in her voice, so they kept it. I also love the interesting phrasing of the different lyrics. Great song for their first #1 hit.

    Ann or Nancy? It's like the old question: "Wilma or Betty? Ginger or Mary Ann? That was back when it seemed a music video was expected for just about every popular song released. MTV and Much Music were major exposure. I never missed a video from Heart or ZZ Top. They were so well done. I played the hell out this album by Heart.

    This was one of those rare cases where Nancy was singing lead vocals instead of Ann. Also, it was mentioned somewhere that during the recording of this song, Nancy had a bit of a cold, hence why her voice sounds the way it does here.

    • @asheard23
      @asheard23 3 роки тому +6

      I think Nancy has also said this was actually just a scratch vocal take that she was planning to re-record after she got over her cold. However, she couldn’t re-create the raspiness the cold gave her so they just wound up keeping the original scratch vocals.

      @artdogg50 3 роки тому +1

      @@michlkwitz Thanks for that clarification. I never knew that. Even though I obviously knew what a powerhouse of a vocalist Ann Wilson is, I couldn't help but think why are they hiding Nancy's beautiful voice once I heard this. I'm OK with a group having one main lead vocalist, especially when they sound like Ann, but I really like so see others in the group get their shine too sometimes. I actually like the smoothness in her voice here just as much as the raspiness. Will admit that the raspiness originally had me thinking Ann was singing it when I first heard it. I actually thought Ann could have sang this too, and always wondered if there was some thought on which one would sing it. Not as a competition thing, but more in the thought process of who usually sings what. Most groups rarely really talk about it.

      @@quinnkeating8431 How do you define best? Do you include ladies like Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, and Amy Winehouse with their distinctively bluesy voices? For power have you considered Doro Pesch, Lita Ford, or Sazuka Nakamoto? How do you define Rock? Does Aretha get a nod, or Whitney Houston? If you want smooth, then Sade and Roberta Flack have to be considered. Ronnie Specter, Martha Reeves, Cass Elliott, Diana Ross, Yvonne Elliman, Donna Summers, Cher, Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper, Natalie Merchant?
      Ann Wilson, Grace Slick, and the afore-mentioned Stevie Nicks are all very special vocalists, but they're definitely not alone.

      @@alanfriesen9837 I define best by who can stay on key, how powerful they can sing, how much they can very their voice dynamics, and the range they can sing. I have never cared for Janis Joplin because too raspy. Winehouse was a great jazz singer, as is Lady Gaga. Tina Turner is definitely on par with Ann Wilson, but there is just something about Ann.

      Artists go through each era of a certain "fashion" and labels calling the shots. In the era of These Dreams they got videos tied in with the album's production.
