Fantastic re-power video! I remember doing that with my father back in 1980
Lots of fun and laughter with much satisfaction when we finished. I was just 10 yrs old and working with my dad I was absorbing all that he could teach. 👍

While welding is the best way in that application someone without a welder can grind the side of the bolt head flush with the shank to make basically half of a T-bolt. They can finish the work and tach weld the T-bolt later without an engine pull if desired.
Ebay has many spacers and tapped and flanged bungs and bushings made by machinists as a way to earn side money with chucker lathes etc (it's easy to make a bucket of parts with little effort).
I use them for all sorts of fixes (including adding NPT drain plugs to automatic transmission oil pans by welding the flange after drilling with a step bit). A threaded bung can we an instant "weld on threaded hole".

The Loncin equivalent of the Predator is a popular replacement in the UK for repowering Merry tillers and old cylinder/reel mowers with defunct Tecumseh, Briggs and Scrapem's and other engines.
The Wolseley Merry Tillers were fantastic pieces of kit as you could power other tools off them from mowers to hedge trimmers. I do have a brochure on them and its amazing what other uses they could be used for. Back in the day they were Britain's most popular tillers. Sadly people in the UK decided that cheaper made machines were much better for their wallet and some people didn't garden like they did when Merr Tiller was in its prime.

This one is one of the earlier models, we have one and a major one of the last before Woolsey dropped machine manufacture and just went with plumbing. Both are powered by brakes n scrapem engines.
Glad you turned the speed down Taryal, slippers needs to do the same.

My favorite part about our old mower that I got to use as a kid was the throttle control. I was 8 years old in 1972 and would rev it up and slow it down just for the fun of it. I still mow lawns now I am 60 but use a rider and yes it has a throttle control!

The belt drive on Slippers' tiller looks like it was designed by Gilson. I came across a Gilson for free on Craigslist--8hp beast with a variable speed drive on the wheels. I actually had it running, the smoke screen hid me from all enemies and mosquitoes, so i found a new 8hp briggs on a western auto tiller with a broken shifter fork. I haven started trying to swap because i know I'm going to have to machine a lot of new obsolete parts for that vari-drive setup, so in my barn it sits.
Bearings and dust seals were always the big problems on old tillers.

I have a two tillers here very much like the Murray you have there, but mine has a centrifugal clutch type pulley. I've been nursing the old Briggs & Stratton 5hp because I've not had any luck getting the pulley or clutch off, and I'm not spending $75 for a new one.
I've got both a new Honda 5hp and a 6.5hp Predator just waiting for a home but so far the BS motor is still working.
I've also got an older Gilson tiller, sold by Spiegel that's super fast, its 100% original but its got no throttle, just a Forward, Neurtal, Reverse lever. The throttle has three settings, Idle, Run, and Choke. If you loose your grip on it, it'll take off and its faster than I can run. I loaded it to the neighbor 20 years ago, warned him about not letting it go, and a hour later I hear a ton of screaming and hollering in his back yard. He let his wife use the tiller while he worked on the garden fence. She was a small woman, maybe 100lbs tops, She apparently hit some roots in the ground, the tiller caught the roots, and ripped itself from her hands, it then jumped out of the trench, proceded to gather up a 10ft length of chicken wire fence he was working on, then it ripped through the rear hedge row, and headed for the highway. If it hadn't of hit some curbing and turned toward the drain basin along the road it would have likely either gone into traffic or crossed the highway and continued until it either hit something or ran out of gas. It was wide open throttle and in gear with a full tank of gas.
His wife, younger than either of us, took off running after it, she only caught it after it hit some phone poles that were sitting on the ground forcing it to turn to the left, it was pawing at the hill on an angle when she caught up with it. She managed to get a hand on the left handle bar but it pulled away from her. She caught up with it again and managed to upset it and it stalled. He went and got his truck to retrieve it, I waited and drank my beer.
No damage was done to the tiller, but it took an hour to cut the mangled chicken wire off the tines and from around the axle. The rear guide bar had fallen off as it went though the hedge row, but we told her that the pin was missing, she spent several hours looking for it in the dark in the field out back. We finished off the rest of the beer while she was out looking for that clevis pin and hairpin, and we found the pin near the hedges in the grass. Somehow we forgot to tell her, at least until we needed more beer.
She wasn't happy when she finally gave up and walked back to the garage and saw the pin she was hunting for for hours back where it belongs.
She never asked to try using that thing again. By the time the next season came around, she was gone and he had a new wife, who never asked to run the tiller. After a few years there, he found and bought his own tiller, just like mine, but he had someone put a lanyard attachment on it so if it got away, it would kill the motor. He did that after he left his running to warm it up and it jumped into gear and mauled the door on his new truck,

Happy Easter! I wanna swap an engine on my old 90s MTD snowblower.Everything works good besides surface rust everywhere and a worn out engine due to the last owner not changing the oil. It bogs after a medium load just barely walking it. I found a NOS 5.5HP Tecumseh which would be great because my Tecumseh always starts very very nice. But on the MTD it’s 2 shafts and the new engine for sale is 1 shaft. So it either flipping the transmission or I think it’s possible to take apart the first engine and take out the cam and case and swap it over it the new one to make it 2 shaft. But I don’t know if it’s possible and probably cost more than it’s worth than to buy a new snowblower if a shop does the work. But if I were to do it I would save money.

Nuts on the outside is always smart for serviceability, but as I found out the hard way one day, it’s definitely frowned upon on the golf course. Paid for 18, escorted to the parking lot after 6. Not my fault when they price beer 6 for $10.

Great job, I notice on UA-cam a lot of folks try putting those motors on Snow blowers especially Ariens and they can’t get the belt and pulley cover back on , that seems like a big issue to me due to snow and water getting in there while using causing everything to slip and get sloppy.

When putting on the new cable, this application won't slip, but on bigger and harder loads, if you put the nut side saddle on the loose end it can pull out! NEVER SADDLE A DEAD HORSE, the saddle being the side of the clamp the nuts are on ! The dead horse being the loose side of the loop! LOVE the knee pad board ' im 'stealing that easy to carry idea!

I have used both those tillers and still have them. Those squeeze handles for your tiller engagement wear out your hand if using them very long. I recommend sliding a ring or metal hose clamp over the lever loosely so you can pull it back easily to stop tines.

I, also, put a Predator 212 on a garden tiller that was much bigger than those, and it was 2wd using the gearbox from a lawn tractor, so it had gears! (3+R) The Predator engine was still more powerful than the original.
i eliminated the throttle control from the handle bars, but I still wanted it to return to idle when stationary. I simply added a cable to the clutch lever then routed it to the governor.
It worked very well...until I put the engine on the stretched & slammed John Deere 180 Mokart, that I built.

A great video bringing the tillers back to life those Predtor engines you should of used the side out muffler deflectors the Stens # 110-414 Honda 18331-E3-811 to deflect the exhaust to the PTO side not on the operator. since this Predator engine uses a foam air filter its best to do what i done i replaced mine with a Tecumseh OEM filter the Stens 056-050 Tecumseh 36046 for the 5 hp Tecumseh Enduro engine that fits these non hemi Predator engines. the ones you and Slippers used are made by Chonquing Ratio Power Mfg Inc as those engines the parts from Honda will transfer over to this predator 212cc item# 69730 as at least the mufflers did not need modifications but if you use these engines to repower a yard vacuum or a MTD chipper Shredder the muffler has to be modified or tweaked . as that video you did a while back when you repowered a pull behind vacuul you used the Predator item # 60363 212cc engine which is made by Loncin which is the HEMI engine. as those two engines are preferred they have metal camshafts. but avoid the Predator Max Performance 224 cc engine item # 57493 they have a PLASTIC camshaft in the engine and problems with the engine. the 212cc 69730 engine is the preferred choice for a repower the engines use a 3/4 crankshaft some equipment like vacuums you need to find an adapter online to adapt the Predator engine's 3/4 shaft to the 1 inch shaft thats keyed thats what i faced when i repowered a Cyclone Rake replacing the Tecumseh engine with this 69730 engine the mods was the muffler had to get a special pipe welded to bring the muffler inwards plus the crankshaft adapter and a 5/16 fine thread grade 8 bolt. as this was about 10 years i swapped this motor as at the time the engine was on sale with a coupon at $89.99 but now $150 what slippers said the inflation. as my 212cc predator engines on my Cub cadet 2 stage snow thrower, the cyclone Rake commercial , and this Predator 212cc pressure washer they don't see much use its seasonal for the other 2 engines the pressure washer not much use as i empty the fuel tanks on these engines and empty the carburetors before storing. as so far my 212cc engines all the 69730 never let me down . when i installed them i did slow it down using the adjustment screw.

Taryl excels in diagnosing and repairing small engines and garden equipment. But the other talent he exhibits that is easily overlooked is his fabrication skill. I would offer that a proper size pulley setup may be preferable to changing the WOT adjustment depending on how well that new engine handles the work load while actually tilling. That Predator is likely engineered to deliver peak horsepower, torque and fuel economy at a specific rpm band and slowing it down too much could impair both function and durability of the engine. Perhaps check rpms under load to assure the engine is not lugging too much.

I got an early 60’s Huffy Broadlawn 26”, that I’ve been restoring ,, needs a blade. I believe it called for a 24 or 25 1/2” blade. Which I can’t find. Every one I’ve tried so far, the holes don’t line up. It was an 8 hp, now it’s got an 11 hp revtek. The exhaust needs to be modified so the pedal comes all the way back and so I don’t burn my foot, and a couple of odds and ends, to finish.

There's still enough of those old engines floating around, you'd think somebody would come up with a kit to convert them to a regular carb and fuel tank. I know there are inexpensive Pulsa Jet clones available, but I've never found reproduction fuel tanks, and they seem to fail more than anything.

The Onan CCKB in my old bobcat died. Im going to replace it with a 670 predator. I know the Vanguard 23hp is likely a better choice, but im primarily just going to use it for personal snow removal here in Nebraska.
Let me know your thoughts. They will be appreciated.

The Predator engines are OK... I appreciate the UA-cam members who have put them to the test. Although not necessarily the best motors, they are one of the best values.
