- Опубліковано 7 чер 2024
- Getting fired from a gig is never a good thing, but the story of how I lost a paying gig and the lessons I learned from that experience are something I've never talked about on my channel before. But when someone asked in this week's Tuesday Q&A I knew I had to share, also covered in this episode, how do patchbays work, my thoughts on Mateus Asato taking a break, is the CAGED system the best way to learn guitar, whats the difference between an SM57 and a Condenser microphone and much more. This is Tuesday Q&A.

How do they know you didn’t order water, and by a miracle it turned to bourbon?
Underrated comment
Because it would've turned into wine.
Just say it’s ice tea..in a tumbler with two ice cubes..lol
We have chocolate biscuits in the UK called "Bourbon".
I have been waiting for the "Church" story since first mentioned it in a podcast. Thank you for sharing it and props to you for keeping them nameless.
Funny how getting fired can sometimes be the best thing for you!
Personally I wouldn't keep them nameless. Letting other people know how a church is likely to respond to certain activities would be helpful to someone looking for a church home. And, If the church feels that what they did was so "right" they shouldn't have any problems with someone letting the whole world know just how "right" they are. Jesus turning water into wine should have been a pretty good clue as to how "right' their actions were. And there are also other verses in the Bible that would clearly show that their church policy is wrong.
@@jonathansinger3818 What they did was very, very stupid and clearly giving people 0 chances at "redemption" is the opposite of what churches are supposed to do. :) Why not simply ask him to delete it and not do that again? Geez. However, it sounds like the whole decision came down to two people at a very large church. Those two people likely have moved on or been fired themselves for behavior like this (turnover is high at churches, especially worship teams). I think not mentioning the church's name is a good move.
@@jonathansinger3818 while you're right, it's also asking for trouble each time one says anything remotely negative about a church, especially a mega one.. religious organizations, paradoxically, don't take criticism well. they are always 'right' as you've said...
most of these suckers run their business like a mafia organization: power is carefully distributed thru the organization and intimidation is their favorite way to show the hierarchy.
no, i'm not paranoid, i just know how it works. lots of churches do nice things for their community and not all of them run PR campaigns but all of them guard their 'image' like the mafia because that's where the money comes from.
be safe everyone, have fun when possible
OK, so these were “legalists.” Be glad you’re not there anymore. They would prefer to put people under rules for daily living, and that’s just wrong.
I am really sorry for the messed up stuff that went on with that church. I am a worship pastor, and that conversation would have no room in my team. There were hundreds of better ways to handle it, and they failed. Just felt like I should say that I am sorry for my brother's and sisters actions. Keep on rocking!
I have a very similar story of my own the differences being I was a member and doing the job for free.
Same here, that should’ve been handled way different. It’s kind of embarrassing to think about some of the mistakes that end up being made in church leader ship. Often times the church music aspect of things ends up being some of the messiest stuff that happens in a church.
Very well handled on your part I might add.
Really love your channel,
Always go to your brother first and just talk to them! Seems like that WL and MD had no guts
Firing someone on the spot via text message is already an incredibly cowardly behavior. But in a church, really? I would kinda understand if they overreacted and asked if he has any % problems and offered help, but not even that! Terrible. I'm fine with churches expecting some standard of public presence, but if it wasn't communicated, that's their problem.
Here’s how ya handle it, tell the person whose gossiping about Snapchat to mind their own business and leave the guy having dinner with his wife none the wiser.
One of the most insightful shows on the net, and I mean the entire world web, seriously. Corresponding stories, musical and human affairs awareness. Top notch, thanks so much Rhett & anyone who helps to keep this thing running!
A week after my Father died of cancer I was fired from a touring band that I had been with for 7 years. The reason given was that a better player came available and they were going with him. I was completely thrown under the bus. It hurts me to this day how guys you trusted as friends could do such a thing. The only thing that gives me peace is that they broke up less than a year after firing me.
You got out early, that's the way I look at it.
dude. that sucks. sorry about your dad. 7 years. it's like..."how many audience members do you REALLY think are going to know the new guitar player is um, "better," then me?" I fired myself from a band once. The singer (after producing him for, get this, 7 years) was a closet racist. Weird.
You were the glue that held the band together.
I feel you. To me that happened two years ago after 25 years in a band. My father died that time also but due to a heart attack. They just send me an SMS to tell me I‘m out. There were years in which playing in that band was the only thing that kept me alive. That’s why I‘m considering 2019 my worst year yet. Worse than 2020. still trying to recover from that.
Your band members were dumb as dirt. Plenty of examples of great bands that make great music that don't have the best players. And no surprise that they broke up after that - why be loyal to a band that might boot you at any time?
That last question really helped me. I’m 16, and thankfully, I have all those boxes checked to some degree. The hardest thing for me is singing and playing at the same time. I have zero interest in being a lead singer, but it does seriously help to do backup some
Rhett that microphone explanation was awesome! I've been using different microphones for a while but never even considered how they actually work; thanks man!
I can't stress it enough: learn to sing. I can name about 6 pivotal gigs I NEVER would've gotten If I only played guitar. Great video Rhett!
I wish country artists followed your advice.
The crazy thing is you don't even need to be good you just need to be on note and in key
@@dashcamcalifornia5003 Totally. You don’t have to have a great voice, just a passable one. And it makes you a better guitar player in my opinion.

I really like when you lend us some of your time to talk about you and your career. That's so inspirational! I always learn a lot through your videos. Thanks, guy 🤘🏻
I feel like the church handled that poorly. I am church musician and I have whiskey/bourbon collection. If you’re ever in the Dallas area I’ll buy you a drink.
Don't post any evidence to social media! LOL
Another reason social media can ruin a career... It's a great open door for future success. It is placed under a microscope... Definitely a double edged sword to hold.
I'm not sure about the labor laws in Georgia, and he may have been contract labor as well, but that sounds like textbook wrongful termination. Removed from a gig without warning, for a "violation" of a policy that he wasn't told about.
@@lorenperelman4517 or, don't hang out or work w/ grownups that patrol the social media AND leave a trail behind.. those are both immature and f amateurs :}
@@5000rgb definitely falls under 'contract labor'
This would be a great regular series. Dig the insight and the thought put into the answer. Much appreciated. Especially interesting to hear the issue with the church. Cheers.
Love this type of video and you showing us what worked and didn't for you. Keep up the amazing work!
Brilliant, brilliant video Rhett! This last question/segment is phenomenally good advice for any young person and can be super helpful to we old farts getting back into a groove. Pair this one with Rick's "No More Excuses" rant and you are on the way.
so much great info put forth in such a clear and precise manner! your are truly a needle in the youtube hay stack. thanks for what you do!
Loved the firing story and how it turned out for the best which almost always seems to happen. We forget these things, but it’s the tough times that really do us the favor of that challenge that makes us better. And thanks for creating such great content! A glass of KY bourbon cheers!
Enjoyed this video. Information from experience is always the best.
Great job Rhett! Appreciate your honesty. Keep doing what you're doing. You're a natural. 👍🏻😊🎶🎸
Always plenty of insight, Rhett, thanks!
I like this q&a. Great info and insights on a variety of topics. Good fun. Thanks!
Fantastic one! Love all the answers, they were all so insightful!
Hey Rhett. I’ve been watching for a long time and probably clocked hundreds of hours of listening to you without ever commenting. I hope you can always prioritize yourself and your happiness. You are clearly a really good guy and that’s why I/we like to listen to you. If you take a break or just dip out the back door - I’d be cool with it and be happy about it and supportive if and when you ever come back. I can’t imagine the strain of the algorithm and trying to keep up - I hope you know that you’ve done the hard work already and you can give yourself time since you’ve given us so much. Much love from California
This was really awesome information and sharing your experiences really helpful for the rest of us. Thank you so much for sharing!
Great material as usual bud. Thanks for what you do from Seattle.
Best video you have put up so far. It’s the real you. Personal but not too personal.... good stuff
Great video Rhett, straight to the point, great info, covered a bunch on this one.
Dude, your candor and courage are even better than the tour stuff which is even better than the gear and playing stuff. You are doing exactly what you should be doing. Keep going.
Rhett - great stuff, thanks. I really appreciate the clarity of your explanations and the insight that goes along with them. Based on that, going to check out your courses!
good stuff man, thanks for all you do.
These videos are the reasons I keep telling everyone about what you’re doing Rhett. Taking time to answer questions honestly really brings so much valuable content. Terrible about the church gig, but God knew what he was doing. Look at you now! You made a new plan A! There is no plan B. Keep it up!
Love this man. Really cool format and so informative
I love that mic explanation. That was a great help.
Nice explanation on the microphones. Very cool. I used to know a singer who used a 57 for stage vocals. That’s pretty rare in my experience but it worked for him.
So great input in this video, priceless !!!! Thank you
Dude, I love your videos and especially this one. I often talk about your videos ( I manage a music store in Texas). Keep going and smile, everything is awesome. Ps I also have been fired from a church gig
Rhett, I really appreciate your work on these videos and sharing your musical Journey with us. Excellent videos and I really enjoyed this video! Very Informative. Thank You!
You explain things very well and I really appreciate that, thanks!
Great points there!!! Very mature and thoughtful information!!! Keep it up!
Hats off to you, Rhett! When the young guy asked about how to parlay his passion for guitar into a career... you didn't try to shoot him down. You gave clear, concise advise on how to put the puzzle together. Very cool of you to not try and detour him. I don't need to tell you... music is a tough gig, and most fail. However... it doesn't mean that hard work doesn't often pay off, and it's worth a shot. Dreams can sometimes become reality.
Rhett! You and Rick Beato are so awesome. Love your podcasts and all of their content.
As a guy who plays in the worship team at my church, some churches can really suck. I never knew just how non toxic mine was until I started hearing stories about other ones in the area. It’s insane some of the things that churches freak out over, especially when the Bible makes clear that drinking is bad because drunkenness causes you to act in a way that doesn’t represent how God wants you to act, not because alcohol is bad itself. Being a drunk is bad, enjoying a glass of whiskey at dinner is not
Baptist churches are known for this. My wife and I both love great beers and enjoy in moderation whenever we find one we haven’t tried. We usually reserve this to our of town so as not to destroy our witness, just because of perceptions. Too bad. But it is what it is.
Don't think the drinking thing is the main issue here. Churches can have that standard if they want. The fact that they didn't inform Rhett of these standards up front and how they went about "firing" him are the bigger problems.
@@denismguitar1552 I have gone to a couple of Baptist churches in my time and neither of them were staunchly against drinking in moderation. We had a girl get fired from the worship team, not for drinking, not for drinking under-age, but regularly showing up to rehearsals/services hung over. They gave her time to get it together but ultimately did what they had to do. I think that's the proper way to approach drinking in a biblical manner.
Wasn’t one of Jesus’ miracles to create wine for a celebration...because they drank all they had already?
I‘m always a worse human being when I drink, and have never become a better one after drinking a beer.
I understand why people do it.
I haven‘t drunk anything in at least a decade and I felt immediately better, it was probably the best thing I‘ve ever done.
what you said about mental health really touched me .....and your frank admission of your own human frailty was very vulnerable and admirable . The human side to what is seemingly a glamourous and easy job became apparent
Well said Rhett .
Great... Love the Q & A stuff!
Fantastic video, Rhett! Especially that last question; lot's of nuggets of wisdom! 🤙
Rhett, if you read some of my other comments one complaint I have is your reviewing very high-end gear that only people with really deep pockets can afford BUT I really enjoyed this new Q & A session of yours. You select great questions, and give great & detailed answers. Good Job !!
Much respect for how you did not name names, when you could have - it is a great statement about your character.
Thanks Rhett, some good sound advice, and great useful information in there, keep it up man! 👍👌
Awesome video man. You never fail to entertain and inspire.
Loved the mic comparison - thanks!
Great Q & A. Love the content.
Cheers.
Wow. A whole lot of honesty and insight here man. Props.
Thanks for all the information!
Thanks for all your knowledge Rhett!
I clicked on a video to find out why you were fired from a gig and now I'm learning about patch bays and how completely inadequate I am in understanding it at all but it sounds really cool man
I have no clue what any of that stuff in the beginning does or why you would need them and now I'm really confused
This is a great vid/talk. Keep it up!
First-time viewer, I really enjoyed your Q & A and the insightful advice to younger/newer musicians is spot on! Having been through the many ups & downs of being a worship team member I can only say that 1) no church is EVER going to be perfect because we're ALL only human and the bigger a church gets the more corporate it behaves and things have a way of getting more complicated so I'm not surprised if they treated you as a hired hand instead of a church-family member. 2) If you know anything about spiritual matters the enemy of our souls will always try and cause division and confusion among God's followers, and especially with those who are committed to bringing God's people into a sanctified time of worship and devotion, so again not surprised. But I do hope you can learn and grow and deepen your trust in pursuing God's highest blessings beyond the temporary rewards and positions of this life...peace!
@Lujack Shaw
Bands and music is for the bar scene not the ridiculous fairytale worshiping... these mega churches should be paying taxes also . These conmen would go away into the dark where they belong !!
Great vid and awesome advice for any young person looking to get into the music business!
You live and you learn, that's the whole point of being a musician! I look forward to this!
Thanks Rhett. I appreciate your story. Looks like several of us have a back-story of playing in church currently or in a past life, paid or volunteer. We all learn in life together, and should come together in transparency. God bless. Appreciate you.
Dude I go out and get drinks with my worship team. So sorry to hear that that happened to you. Wonderful to see how you've bounced back from it
A very informative and entertaining video..
Keep up the great work dude ..
Respect..
I did not checked your video for a little while (maybe 4 or 5 months) and I must say your studio is now really impressive ! Wow. !
Really love this video Rhett. Great Work!
great explanation of the inner face...It's April now and my inner face is full of snot from all the pollen here! Great channel...CAGED is GOOD for people that are visual. I hope you understand what I mean. Some people are visual, they learn and relate to what they SEE in a VISUAL aid...i.e. the CAGED system. The great thing about it is if you are an auditory learner and you have some experience, the CAGED system can actually "fill in the blanks" for you. As I grow older I realize the giant gap between what you think you know and how much you really need to LEARN...and it's NEVER too late to learn, especially if there's no plan B
Great video , good advice. Funny when shit happens it almost always is a blessing in disguise.
Sorry to hear about your church experience Rhett. It's always sad to hear when some churches value what someone can do over the person themselves. Valuing people starts with - A) setting expectations up front and B) having loving conversations if someone violates those standards - with the intent of seeking resolve - not just firing them off the cuff. Glad it all worked out for you though!
For the question about how to make a career as a musician I would also add, starting to work on your portfolio. Post online, show your craft etc. I believe this is going to be a major factor as well.
Great video, Rhett! For the 15 year old I would add, "Don't turn up your nose at business classes in school." I did, and I had to learn everything from how to design a business card to how to do my taxes after I started working. Basic economics, supply and demand, employment law, how to do taxes, taxes consequences of various business decisions, how to operated a sole proprietorship business and a partnership, etc.
After I posted this I saw an interview with Steve Cropper. He said the key to his success was not outstanding talent but business sense.
Not just guitarists! I'm a programmer, and at various points in my career I was expected to know sales, promotion, management, training, HR, giving talks, manning a booth at a trade show, etc. EVERYONE needs to know this stuff, even if you swear you would never need it. Every college should offer a streamlined business techniques class, but don't.
Best wishes on continued success.
Great studio man - very sad brother about the church gig. I was also cancelled for a misunderstanding. Where a church lacks grace and forgiveness they become just blind guides. Appreciate your work!
Kudzu Hill ... you made me aware of that when he released it. I shared it with my best friend and bassist, and it lead to a 45 minute phone conversation about it. It’s incredible.
I'm 16 and wanna make a living on guitar and never thought about the whole daw aspect thanks for the amazing advice rhett
Very interesting topics really like your videos
Nice tour on the patchbay thing.
Great Advice Rhett!!
I'm just learning how to sing, and amazingly I'm getting better. Still far from good, but better.
Even if it wont help me anywhere in my career, I'll train it anyways.
It's fun
Great content! thanks!
Thanks for sharing. It’s sad when people don’t communicate and then feelings get hurt, especially at a church. Sometimes large churches get way to focused on themselves, rather than loving people and loving Jesus.
Transitions never feel comfortable. But they come to help pull you out of one situation and into better... I'm saying this as my current job is winding down and my future income is in question. But I've always done better than the previous situation and this will be no different.
I came here for one thing and got something completely different. Great video
That 57 is slaying that LDC in this particular instance! A lot of consoles have channel inputs that don't have the right impedence to let a 57 really shine. A 57 through a good transformer-coupled mic pre with selectable impedence sounds amazing on lots of sources.
Great video. I’m no techie but when you explained the equipment and all the connections, I thought “the hip bone’s connected to the thigh bone, etc. etc. A friend was a rhythm guitar player in a band, his wife was the singer and really great, the lead player was the band leader. The leader fired the rhythm guy because he “wasn’t good enough” but wanted to keep the wife/singer. No dice. They were a package deal. I used to play “ folkie” stuff at Farmers’ Markets. For free because I didn’t need the money. One year the Market music organizer called to schedule me but told me I couldn’t sing “political” stuff because a vendor had complained. They lost the only musician who gave them free music.
Thanks for sharing your story about dealing with churches The good and the bad i used to be a church musician myself thank God I never been fired but I have left many churches because of my spiritual growth on bettering myself as a musician and trying to be around positive energy thanks 🙏🏿
Appreciate you. Relax when you can!
Loved the sneaky mic comparison.
your P & W church story resonates with me because it almost parallels my exp. (I was forced to resign VS being fired) ... overall it was a blessing for me in the end because I too was comfortable.
Wonderful video Rhett
Come play in CA on my worship team and have a beer with us after.
Thx for doing what you do. Love it.
Great advice Rhett! 🔥
I love watching your videos, way to go, Rhett! Big kudos fom Armenia)
Blown away by how little difference betwen the three different mics for voice over. Lately, I've been using the sm57 with a vocal preamp and a pop screen, and I really like how it sounds on my vocals
Great video Rhett. Good info, good advice and kind words. P.s try not to worry about that bloke from JHS so much haha! ♥️ From Australia
Is there a more helpful video out there?... I sincerely doubt it now! this is literally GREAT, man! Hat's Off!
Your experience as a worship musician was about the same as mine, except I had the audacity to get a divorce. The church had no tolerance for this; but having kids out of wedlock, drug/alcohol additions, and missing rehearsals/services were just fine. Never again...
Love it Rhett. I hope your doing well!
The Great River signal chain. Sweet!
Nice work Rhett!!
Thanks for answering my question, Rhett 🤘🏻what a wild story lol
I always enjoy your content! Don’t let the burnout blues get you.
Rhett agree with Luke M. Having worked in the church worship team arena most of my musical career I want to touch on the other aspect you mentioned. That is worship music (with the exception of black gospel which is more jazz complex) is generally very simple and you are stuck with one style of playing. Rarely do you get to explore and expand your playing in blues, rock, and other genres. As a worship player I have to discipline myself to practice other music forms to grow in my guitar playing.
Good stuff!
I gotta say Rhett, I'm selfishly glad the Church fired you, now we get to enjoy all your videos and I'm very excited to see what's in store for Deacon Knight!!!
“How I got fired” is a semi regular series? You must be a pain in the ass🤣🤣🤣 kidding love your channel man.
