  • Steamrail's R761 has been a tour workhorse for over four decades, and on her recent trip to Shepparton with steel cars in tow she was allowed to bust the normal 80 kph limit on the Melbourne-Seymour section. There were surprisingly few cars on the road as the sun was going down we took advantage of the opportunity to 'pace' the loco south of Mooroopna and again south of Murchison. Awesome result...
(DOWN journey) Glenroy Bank, Wandong & Tallarook (UP journey) Mooroopna, Murchison, Mangalore & Tallarook.

What a great video, showing the locomotive's true performance without an annoying diesel engine ruining the performance and aesthetics. The pacing part is magnificent, always are. 👍👍

I'm from NSW and I think they are the finest looking loco in the country.
I like the 38s but not the streamlined version, they looked like a barrel vacuum cleaner in my opinion.
Sad that 3830 is out of action.

I remember seeing 1 of these near Seymour alongside the 3801 on the Standard Gauge line . They were flying that day. That was the day the R came off the tracks on a faulty new set of points. A lot of crow bars got her back

I was never much a fan of Australian steam, but it’s really started to grow on me. How fast can this locomotive go, and how fast is it allowed to go?
    Greetings from the USA.

Hi there, thanks for your interest in Oz steam. That particular loco was only doing about 80-90kph at the time, although she will comfortably sit on 115 or a bit more. Our 'official' records of speed are not impressive by UK and USA standards, someone will correct me, but around 85mph is our top speed set by a Victorian Railways 'S' class. Although I'm sure those from New South Wales will let us know that their 38 Class has done more! Of course unofficially, I'd love to know what has really been achieved...

@@symphonyofsteam there's stories around from the West Coast Railway days that the speedo's they were using on the R's were slightly out of calibration. They were allowed to run up to 120km/h on the speedo, however that was around 140km/h track speed. Which is just over 85mph......

    • @smitajky
      @smitajky 2 роки тому +3

When it was in service it was permitted 70 mph which was the Victorian Railways max permitted speed.
The wheel diameters were large by Australian standards but small by overseas standards giving the maximum available HP at between 40 and 50 mph. Suiting moderate grades with light passenger stock. They were extensively used on goods trains where they were not really well designed. Heavy loads at low speeds were not intended.
When first introduced they double headed the heavy Overland to Adelaide where they faced a 20 to 30 km upgrade of 1 in 48. (2%). Their relatively large boilers to tractive effort enabled them to perform reasonably well on the sustained gradient where some other types could "run out of steam" after a while. Particularly the much older C class.

n the 1960s, as the railway preservation movement began to gather momentum, a small number of R class locomotives found a new role as power for excursion train services. In this role they were able to fulfill their intended role of high speed passenger travel, with speeds of over 80 mph (129 km/h) being recorded.[18]

Seven of the seventy Victorian Railways R class Hudsons have been preserved.
Of these four are in operational use like this one.
Not many months if the year when each does not run a fan trip often double headed.
Lots of UA-cam videos recording their use in preservation and a few from their normal service from about 1951 to 1967.
