100 Steam Locomotives

- Since establishing this channel back in 2010, I have travelled all across the United States, and more recently the United Kingdom, following the tracks of the iron horse. Compiled here are the first 100 steam locomotives I've had the pleasure of capturing on video, presented in the order they were first featured on Smoky Mtn Steam. I am very fortunate to have seen so many of these magnificent machines in action, and I can't wait to see what my next 100 will be!
Opening music is Black Vulture by Silent Partner, from the UA-cam Audio Library - Авто та транспорт
Correction: @ 7:45 Viscose Company no. 6 is a Baldwin product, not Vulcan.
Aw. That engine at 30:12 made a cute, little sneeze. 🥺
Bless you, little one.
27:57 the amount of wheelslip from these two tells me that they were very anxious and just wanted to go already lol
I've watched this channel for years, but I didn't expect to see so close to where I live in Wales featured! I also didn't realise that You'd been to the Severn Valley Spring Gala in April. That was such a good event.
I’ve long loved British steam, so as soon as I had a chance to go I took it and promptly flew into the hottest week in British history lol. It worked out in the end, with only the welsh narrow gauge lines running steam I got to spend the whole trip exploring and falling in love with Cymru and its quirky little railways. I came back for my standard gauge fix in the spring, unfortunately I had to squeeze the SVR gala into the middle of my chase of the Great Britain XIV so I was a bit rushed. I’m hoping to visit again next year if I manage to save up the money again.
@@SmokyMtnSteam I've always had an obsession with American steam, but whether I'll ever be able to get over there to see any of it is difficult to say. I've always wanted to do the D&RGW, the Cumbres & Toltec, Cass, Strasburg, and a mainline tour with something big. More recently, I've really liked the Age of Steam Roundhouse and Reading & Northern 2102 and 425. I'd love to see those!
Congratulations 🎊 🍾 🎉
Thank you!
17:48 am glad that you put my favorite steam locomotive in this video, Nice job!👍
425 is one of my favs as well.
He didn’t put mine😥
N&W 611 is back on the N&W.
Yes, in the video.
Actually it'll be running on the C&O this fall but that's close enough for me
@ 23:10 THATS MY GIRL! Good ole 1923 Alco Product. Shes a great engine. Biggest 0-6-0 around, stiff, buff and tough 💪🏻
113 is a real chonker of an 0-6-0 for sure. I'd love to see it again sometime.
buff is a mens game, I can be that 0-6-0 in one second
Duchess of Sutherland is a Princess Coronation Class engine. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose are Princess Royal Class engines, smaller in size and without smoke deflectors. If you want to add another hundred steamies to your list, you'll have to be very quick. The future of UK steam on the main line is already looking bleak, with the cost of coal and overhauls rising formidably high. Some steam engines are still going strong, but most have had to be disposed of, meaning they will never run again. Good luck chasing your next target of 100 steamies, your chances of reaching it are getting slimmer every day.
The Duchess is a coronation but is owned by the Princess Royal Class trust, which owned Princess Margaret Rose first. And I wouldn't be so pessimistic, while there are many challenges facing steam operations in the 21st century, heritage railways are run by very resourceful and determined people.
Absolutely epic video man!
Thanks!
Dang! You saw 100 different steam locomotives from around the world?! I’m very impressed. Here’s to 200, just like you said at the end of the video. Looking forward to more steam locomotives running again! I’ll help you reach your 200 goal by donating towards current locomotive restorations, such as PRR 1361, Reading 2100, Maine Central 470, and more.
What are the next steam locomotives you look forward to seeing operate for the first time? Also, have you heard about the 200th anniversary of the first railroad event to take place in the U.K. in 2025?
I'm hoping to see some more of the Colorado narrow gauge in the near future, and of course I'm looking forward to 2100, 576, 722, 1361, and the rest. And I hope to be there for the Stockton & Darlington and Liverpool & Manchester 200th anniversaries in 2025 and 2030 if at all possible.
@@SmokyMtnSteam Awesome! Can’t wait for more steam train videos from you!
Boy I really have been under a rock. Congratulations!
Thanks man!
I’m surprised you haven’t seen Pere Marquette 1225 yet
i like trains
Great! Well put together.
Thank you!
Wow, this sure must be quite the record you got. Congrats.
Thanks!
Great video and awesome catches
Thank you very much!
32:39 that is just wonderful
Ive been in Delaware my whole life never been to the Wilmington and Western
Congratulations
Thanks!
Awesome! Where'd you get all the accurate fonts of each engine for the little cards? For example, the Tweetsie & Southern fonts.
Most of the fonts that weren't pre-installed on my Macbook came from dafont or 1001 fonts. Trying to find free fonts that matched and getting the designs right on those cards was like 90% of the work on this project. The old-west font I've been using for Tweetsie is called Saddlebag and the Southern engines were bold Times New Roman for the letters and Railroad Roman for the numbers. I use that combo of Roman fonts for most of my videos titles/thumbnails because it was basically the default for American railroads back in the day.
27:56 the engine at the front is Duke from Thomas
You mean that’s Duke’s real life counterpart.
Out of curiosity, what was the year you caught the most engines?
2022. I caught 25 new locos that year, 17 of them during one week in the UK.
I want the link to 50 steam trains pls
3:32
14:21 my favorite American steam locomotive of all time, Nickel Plate Road #765 😘💓💝💋💖🥰💕😚❤️💗😊😍💞
It's overrated i prefer the least picked in this complication
Yes.
30:44 That Talyllyn Railway no.4 Looks like Peter Sam.
Same type of engine as Peter Sam
Its his basis
Close basis
Me having seen like 4
That's not a bad number! We should be thankful to still see any steam in this century.
Maybe Frisco 1522!
9:56 Johnny Cash rode on this train
0:00 airtime thrills
I wonder when Southern Railway 630 will be running again?
630 returned to service earlier this week.
630 was returned to service last week! I plan to go down there next month.
Oh. Good! I’m glad she’s back to working again.
No Wisconsin steam?
I have never been to Wisconsin
@@SmokyMtnSteam Get 1003/261 in there, both extremely beautiful engines.
7:46 viscose 6 is actually a baldwin
You're 100% correct, the info cards for that whole group of tank engines were copy/pasted and I forgot to change the builder. I've pinned a comment with the correction, thank you.
@@SmokyMtnSteam you are a class act
