It would be nice to see a kitchen/pantry tour of a French kitchen and a side by side comparison of common French vs American breakfasts/lunches/dinners with nutrients profiles. Wonder how the macronutrients are similar and different.

I saw your video on why french people don't get fat and realized that even though I grew up in the States, I live more similarly to a French person than an average American in regards to food and exercise. Americans think I have a "fast metabolism" even though I'm pretty insistent that I do indeed gain more weight when I eat more and laze around. But in reality, I've refused sitting in cars all day from a young age, cook all my meals, enjoy food, I'm actually a big foodie - I love variety, hate low fat low sugar options for anything, don't feel guilty when I eat more, spend a little more for quality, and generally opt to walk more steps wherever I can even though other Americans think I'm crazy for it

I'm a Turkish mom and i try to plan weekly too and prepare plates including protein, carbs, veggies at the same time. Olive oil, fresh salads and home made yogurt are very important on our table. This is i guess very important to be thin and healthy. Our kids eat the things we eat. There is no kid friendly food. And our portions are not big. Exercise and walking are also our routine.
I love your channel and the way you explain things simply. Thank you and keep going!

For those of you who suck at meal planning like I do, I highly recommend getting "La Cuisine Pour Toute L'Année" on your kindle. It's a lifesaver! I translate the French meals to English. Any recipe I've made from it turns out good. Even when I don't like the meal suggestion for the day, I just replace one or two things in it with a recipe or food idea that I prefer.

I’m English, and I eat like this. Partly because I was raised by my parents to eat a healthy, balanced diet. But also, Lucie, you are missing the economic aspect here. I work full time, study in the evenings and have a low income. So planning meals carefully is the ONLY way I can achieve a healthy diet. I often bulk cook several portions of a healthy meal and freeze it in meal-sized containers. This makes it possible to afford healthy ingredients (I NEVER throw anything out) and reduces the preparation time necessary. Many people in Britain are struggling with long working hours and low income, so planning meals becomes a literal survival skill for them, making it possible to maintain a decent quality diet, even though stress and economic insecurity are working against them.

Edukale by Lucie I’m sure you have studied this area, and already know how intricately connected diet, income, health outcomes and stress are. It really bothers me when I see health care professionals discuss diet as “choices”, completely ignoring the economic factors we KNOW make “good choices” harder for less privileged people to access. In Britain, there is a cookery expert and writer (Jack Monroe) who became famous through writing about her struggles to feed herself and her young son on an extremely low income. She published her low cost recipes, designed to use cheap (but where possible, healthy) ingredients. If you haven’t explored her website yet, I recommend it! She is great in that she isn’t afraid to recognise and discuss the economic and political aspects of diet and privilege. She also provides a lot of useful information for people who want to eat healthily but have a very limited budget.

thats kinda what i dont understand though. beans, rice, onions, carrots, celery, apples and bananas are the absolute cheapest foods out there! it is a thousand times cheaper to cook a large pot of rice, and few different pots of beans or lentils on the weekend and then turn them into different buddha bowls and stir frys throughout the week than it is to purchase all that garbage processed food that most low income families eat on the daily. cereal - is not really cheap its like 5$ for a box that most people treat as about 3 servings even though it is like 11 servings. oatmeal on the other hand is cheap .its like 3$ for a big ole thing thatll get you like 20 servings. so no. low income is not stopping people from eating well. its is the lack of education and their desire to make sure they have hyper palatable food. all that fake cheese and boxed food like substances are far more expensive than buying healthy food. sure maybe you wont be buying organic produce, or even a bunch of fresh produce, but it is far cheaper to eat healthily than to eat processed.

    • @Tess78uk
      @Tess78uk 3 роки тому +4

Bethany Day what this BBC video, and the research into sugar consumption makes clear Bethany, is that it is NOT just low income families consuming a lot of highly-processed food. It is the vast majority of us. 👉🏻 ua-cam.com/video/A1qbkL-Iff8/v-deo.html
Consumption of high-sugar, low-fibre options has rocketed across ALL demographics. Those in poverty are consuming more in SOME cases, but that can be explained using a combination of factors, including education and a number of economic factors that have been worsening over the last four decades, including parents having less time to spend cooking. Bear in mind that in the U.K., 60% of poverty is IN WORK poverty. That is, people are working, but their wages are so low, or work so insecure, that they live below the poverty line.
You need to be aware of how your statements about low income families are coming across. How do you know ‘most’ eat processed junk on a daily basis, in contrast to other classes? This comes across as a derogatory, classist generalisation, honestly. If they eat cereal most days, what leads you to believe the financially secure working class don’t also eat cereal most day? The middle classes? Do they not regularly consume cereal? I don’t disagree with your point that anyone could improve their diet by swapping sugary cereal for something like oatmeal. But, I do disagree with using these type of arguments to take a pot shot at people whose lives are often already very tough. We should be introducing policies to improve the economic conditions of people’s lives, not simply telling them “it’s tough that your food budget is so low - just learn to cook more”.

@@bethanyday3471 exactly. A canister of oats lasts me a long time and can be eaten along with homemade yogurt and frozen fruit. Beans, lentils, and brown rice form the basis of many of my meals. Cook a bag of dry beans and freeze extras for another meal too. I think in terms of bowls all the time. It’s a great way to use little bits of this and that. Sometimes my boys want ranch dressing, and it’s so easy whipping up a bowl of it with homemade milk kefir or yogurt some Mayo and a bunch of herbs and spices. Vegetables can be used on bowls, in wraps, along side eggs in the morning.

This channel is amazing, I found it a couple days ago and I have been watching a lot of your videos. Living in the US is extremely hard because of the negative relationship with food people have here. Based on my experience, eating junk food is the norm and if you don't, then you're considered "weird" in a way. Because of this negative society, I am struggling to build a healthy relationship with food and your channel is a blessing!

8:30 I grew up in Spain and I was also super shocked by the kids meal thing in the US.
Edit: I remember coming to the US as a kid and ordering an “adult like” dish at a restaurant with my friend and her family. Her family got on to her about ordering something more “childish” and all I could think about was that they probably made her fish sticks and chicken nuggets for dinner all her life. What did those parents expect?

I’m from the U.S. and that’s how I always try to plan my meals, although sometimes I end up ditching the plan and having something really easy, like a salad. I’ve been a vegetarian for years though and I’ve found most people who are vegetarian plan out their meals and cook from scratch. My immediate family does this as well. I thought lots of families in the U.S. did that until I started asking friends & coworkers what they were having for dinner 😳😬 …. Omg 😱 yeah, no wonder so many Americans are overweight! Now obviously that’s not everyone from the U.S., I’m sure there are still plenty of families that plan their meals but clearly it’s not as many as I had thought.

Being a teacher I see many young kids lunches full of junk and processed foods. Schools also offer lunches like pizza, chicken nuggets or Subway sandwiches again being processed. I know life is busy but if you prep on Sunday afternoon you can have healthy lunches and dinners ready for the week. Clean and cut fruits and veggies as soon as get home from grocery. Throw a meal in slow cooker for ex chilli, make egg salad or chicken salad..easy to make sandwich ..cut up lettuce and store covered with paper towels will last many days in fridge. This can get you through the week.

This is satisfying and filling. Also cut up some fresh fruit like apples and take it along to work. Or you can use quinoa instead or tomatoes, fresh spinach, peppers.

One thing I figured out a long time ago is that fruit travels well and generally doesn't need to be prepared. That's my "fast food" if I need a snack on the go. I think a lot of Americans don't realize how bad the processed foods are making them feel. I can't eat fast food or I'll feel like absolute garbage after.

  • @GinaMarieCheeseman

Standard American food can be bland. Growing up I tended to gravitate to friends who had ethnic backgrounds with flavorful foods. My mom is Armenian and she added spices like parsley and basil to many foods, plus garlic and onions. Maybe many Americans gravitate to fast foods with its vast quantities of salt because they don't know food can be flavorful.

I am so happy to have found your channel! I'm an American but I swear I'm European on the inside out and I'm moving to Paris in the near future and I've enjoyed watching several of your videos!! I'm vegan and I'm dying to know - where in Paris did you find cashew butter?? Where do you do most of your "healthy food" shopping (like flax seeds, nut butters - all these "trendy" things?) I'm guessing Mark & Spencer or Naturila or and Biocoop or Bio c Bon... but wanted to ask!😊
P.S. - you have THE MOST americanized accent when speaking english that I have ever heard from any french person EVER!!😂

So interesting I love this French spin on your videos. My family is French decent (American) and this makes so much sense to how I remember my grandparents and great grandparents cooking. Everything from scratch always… a salad almost every time. My dad always insisted on eating this way- and my mom is more Americanized so I definitely grew up noticing the differences but never knew it was a real way French people ate… great video!!

Hi thank you for these videos!!
    I came across u today !! 🥰🥰
I use to have a great relationship with food as I’m from Italian background, but some couple years after having my second son I have gained so much weight and have ended up at my full pregnancy weight!!
I’m going to start today with changing my way of thinking around food and be more mindful of the nutrients and health benefits I’m getting, then just focusing on weight loss and then the weight loss will just come naturally.
Can you tell me when doing your recipe search on Pinterest do u search for macro nutrient vegetarian meals? I’m not vegetarian, however, I’d like to eat more vegetarian meals?
    Thanks so much Bella!! 😘😘

Great video, thank you, I have a question though, what is the best way to go about this when you have a toddler? I am very busy and therefore disorganised. I used to eat so well but now I am just making the best that I can. I also used to meal plan but it’s so hard keeping that going. My little boy won’t eat the foods that I cook, he used to but now he’s stopped so I end up giving him mashed potato or ravioli because he’ll eat it up straight away. Any tips on that too please? Thank you.

Feeding kids can be tricky! I suggest serving him some of the safe foods you mention at the same time as other healthier options. Explain to him that once he has finished the mashed potatoes, he won't have anymore, but he can have the [healthier food option] instead. Continue to expose him to the other foods but try not to put too much pressure on him to eat them. All of this is purely in theory though because I don't have kids!! Good luck!

I'm sure there are many great professional sources that can help with your question, but if I may, Here a few tips from a fellow mum who has been there. First, put the priority back on your nutrition, Try to take the pressure/stress out of the kid Not eating much. Sometimes I just feel like Kale and quinoa and if She doesn't eat It she can have a small balanced snack meal (in our case, carrots/peppers with protein crackers or hummus) so what if they feel kinda hungry, they need to be, to eat a full meal. So no running around trying to fill them up with One More Spoon of food (did that!!). Pretty sure that if you eat balanced and enjoy your healthy meals, they will eventually do too. Also, keep snacking at Bay. If they are half full they will never eat healthy meals, non m'y expérience. For some time I just took snacks out of the equation completely. Good luck and bon appétit!

My doctor just told me to let them choose not to eat it. They can get up move and play but when they ask for food put the food you made in front of them. The theory is that when a person is really hungry they try or eat just about anything. I noticed my son was becoming picky because the people babysitting him were only giving him kid friendly foods. All he wanted was Mac and cheese and nuggets. You have to stand firm though and no yelling. When they realize you won’t give in they will eat the food. Don’t feel bad either your not a bad mom for not giving in. I did this for about a week and I started seeing huge differences in my son he sort of realized after the third day that the rules were set and I wasn’t going to change them. I didn’t do anything to drastic though. I added more veggies and new things I knew were good for everyone.

So, scheduling meals is hard in American families because each member of the family, especially kids often has a different schedule. My kids had a lot of afterschool activities (each different) pre pandemic and my husband's work schedule was really different than mine. We're white collar professionals. Many more Americans work moving shifts. Shifting dinner time to align with these varying moving parts would have been impossible many nights. There are also food allergies that arent uniform across the family to contend with. Plus, in many families someone is also on another eating plan, like keto. I think that is why you have noticed American families not eating at the same times or the same things.

They love rich foods and created pastries so they could eat dessert with breakfast because they believe every meal should have dessert lol it’s more that the food quality is better in France and there’s else poverty. So many things that I never tried , until I was an adult, such as Chinese food and Indian Food. The ONLY fish I had as a kid were canned tuna or frozen fish sticks. I did not like either. My parents had children too young and had no parental role models. i survived. I am a vegetarian, no wheat, no milk, just cheese. Minimal processed foods. No fried foods, only healthy fats/ oils.

This is a very random question. But for an American, would the meal prep services were they send you the ingredients and portions pre made a bit better than just going out? Would this still emulate “french” eating? It’s so hard to go to fresh markets here in America when everything is so fast paste and fresh markets are so expensive as well

I think this is a gross generalization of American's. People who meal plan here go through the same process and I would say most people I know don't rely on eating out for most of their meals. In some ways the process that you talk about as being the french way of meal planning is kind of opposite of what I hear about France... that they usually shop more than once a week or even daily for ingredients because of the smaller kitchens and fridges that are common there. Also, that there's much more of an emphasis on getting foods fresh from a market in France rather than shopping once a week for your meal plan at a super market (les supermarchés sont américans, n'oubliez pas ;) ) Not trying to dis the video or the point of view, its just the idea of meal planning a week at a time strikes me as a very American way of thinking.

Hey I like this video and the one I watched before about a typical french day of eating. :) I am a dietetics student so I appreciate your information put forth in a palatable, easy to digest manner. ;) not to mention you seem friendly and consistent :) One thing I would like to offer constructive criticism about however is the compassions to American culture. While yes in general Americans are typically seen as having unhealthy eating habits, the size difference between our countries makes the comparison less valid for me. And for me, it detracts from what you are trying to say about a typical French diet by repeatedly discussing an average Americans diet. Just, there is no need. I know I shouldn’t be offended..Hah but in truth. It sorta seems to perpetuate the idea that the French hate Americans etc etc etc. ;) and from my experiences with French friends..and from when my best friend lived there for a couple years.. we noticed they sorta do laugh at how fat Americans are.. I think they werent horrible people either it was just a cultural norm.. Idk it just sort of feels like if I were to generalize and say French people eat croissants constantly , smoke cigarettes with every meal whilst wearing a beret.( even knowing the french slogan is always moderation.. haha) just saying it feels sorta annoying you know. Btw I totally respect and appreciate your channel but felt I should say what I was thinking about .. I don't think you mean offense but I still sorta took it that way even knowing you aren’t referring to me personally! Hah. But its also sad to compare French eating to American eating when we have food deserts in the middle of the country without access to fresh produce.. and France has fresh local markets everywhere and bakeries using natural ingredients and traditional methods... an ex boyfriend of mine from east st louis Illinois was 33 before he ever tried a kiwi.. he told me fruit wasn’t in abundance or variety growing up poor in the Midwest of America. So I guess overall its just hard to compare ALL of America to France.. Just my opinion.. I’m Californian btw.. haha which feels sorta smug and is also probably why I felt inclined to give my unasked for opinions!;) ...in general. Thanks again for your videos. I really do think you’re doing a good job. 🌞✌️💛

      @laurelquarentine9394 3 роки тому +1

It is funny to me. I feel as though all nutritionists eat very similarly regardless of country. The variance in my diet to yours is that my boyfriend is a Korean chef. So half of my food has korean origin. :) (basically more fish, tofu and kimchi. We don’t typically eat meat together;) Which is also very American.. bc its a melting pot. Every culture resides here. :) the only true Americans” are native. The rest of us are from everywhere else so I guess that also makes me laugh at comparing any country .. because we are a conglomeration of every country. The only american food is probably a hot dog or a hamburger and we are aware its not healthy..Sorry I could not stfu once I started.. but clearly I’m passionate.. is it obvious I had a bad experience in Paris as a teen ? 😆
