This was a fun idea! I don't agree with your entire list but I was entertained. I just reread Harlem Shuffle to prepare for my preordered Crook Manifesto, lol. I also loved Lucy by the Sea.
Thank you! Entertainment is the name of the game so I'm glad I succeeded! No expectations that anyone would agree with me. Thanks for watching and commenting!
You are killing it with ideas lately! Victory City and The Shards for me. Listening to your DNF stories there were so many i either agreed with like A History of a Burning and so many i could say I'm good for like In Ascension.
Thanks Scott! It's because Booker is my favourite time of the book year! I've actually just received Victory city to start this month. I've never completed a Rushdie novel before so I really don't know which way I'll land with his work. For you is it just Victory City that you didn't like or Rushdie's work as a whole? The shards is another interesting one with many people saying that they either dont like it or don't want to see it on the list. I don't know if ive missed something with this one. It still remains on my TBR but I have no experience with this author. Have you already read In Ascension? I feel like you have
Both Victory City and The Shards are based on the author. American Psycho is one of the worst books I've ever read. I've not tried In Ascension, I think I'll only give it a shot if it's longlisted now, and that's just so I can form my own opinion on it to comment. Pretty convinced I won't enjoy it after what you've said about it
I feel like a young woman when I watch your channel, so thank you. This is a fantastic idea. I love how you are finding so many new ways to talk about books. Wronglist is my new favorite word.
I love a list even a list where most of the books are on my TBR or I've already read, lol. It's really good to know what you want to read about and what you don't. Good on you. Happy Reading.
Watching after the fact of the Longlist! You have two you won’t be reading despite them ending up on the list. Good job the rest of them haven’t made an appearance. The Memory of Animals was weird. Not in a necessarily good way, although I’d say I liked it more than you. Not surprised to not see it on the Longlist. 😂
Such a great idea for a video! I think Colson Whitehead's book is a sequel to his previous book Harlem Shuffle so another reason not to pick it up! I really enjoyed A Spell of Good Things and I Have Some Questions For You. I'd be surprised if I Have Some Questions For You made it as it just doesn't feel like a booker type book but who knows! I'd like A Spell of Good Things to make it though and I think it has a good chance. I'm really hoping Yellowface by R F Quang doesn't make it as I've tried a couple of her previous novels and think her writing lacks depth. I also don't want On the Savage Side to make it. I tried Betty and thought it was overwritten.
Thank you Mercedes, that means a lot! Yes I do question whether I Have Questions is Bookery enough! But in the past I have been surprised by books that I wouldn't have considered Bookery making the Longlist! I also am expecting to see Adebayo make it, I think she's proven herself with both her novels now. I also hope Kuang doesn't make it, I think she writes for a totally different audience plus, as you say, I don't think she's a strong enough writer for Booker to put her on their Longlist though, so hopefully that's safe. Thank you for watching and commenting! 😁
I'm reading In Ascension right now, and I completely agree with your assessment. If I weren't buddy reading it, I'd DNF it, too. and I don't care for child narrators, either--that's almost always a strike against any book for me. I think they're very difficult to get right.
Being a reader that mainly reads dark and heavy books there are several on this list of yours that are on my TBR. J would say we agree on Lucy Barton, I also never found them that intriguing from the blurb.
Ahhh but that raises an interesting point though! For those who didn't get on with The Secret History as much, they should give I Have Some Questions a try and potentially have an enjoyable time with it!
Lucy by the Sea is great and the pandemic sadly isn’t over but I fully support the idea of not reading things that don’t appeal to you, especially when they’re traumatic.
In my opinion you aren't really missing that much by skipping The Passenger (except frustration, weirdness, cringiness, creepiness). Whitehead's new book is, I think, a sort of sequel to his last book Harlem Shuffle.
I quite liked 'The Memory of Animals. and am now reading another Fuller (Bitter Oranges) that I also like. Since I've read the entire longlist for 9 years in a row, it doesn't matter what they pick - I'll read it. That said, I have successfully avoided 'Demon Copperhead' so far, so will be disappointed if it gets another anointing - I can almost guarantee it's not for me.
What books do you guys NOT want to see on this year's longlist?! 😁
Demon Copperhead: Barbara Kingsolver
The New Life: Tom Crewe
Yellowface: R.F Kuang
Shy: Max Porter
@@rhyst124 all solid choices my friend! 👏🏻

I also reread Harlem Shuffle recently. And, Crook Manifesto will not disappoint! Also a fan of Elizabeth Strout.

This pre-booker list was ace lol. Loved the rants and the beautiful foliage!
Glad you enjoyed!

You are so welcome Greg! I'm going to be saying wronglist from now on!! 😂
I LOVE this title!!! I need to do this😂
I won’t be reading the Brett Easton Ellis one for SURE!!
Haha you're the second person to tell me that! Have I missed some controversy around this novel or have you read and hated his other work?
@@charlottemolloy I think he made some horrible comments about the gay community and specifically people living with AIDS.

Yes two, plus I dnfed This Other Eden earlier in the year too. So I'm at a manageable 10 samples to read! 😂
Very interesting 😊
Glad you think so Maria!😀

Yes I totally agree, an incredibly hard to get right!
Being a reader that mainly reads dark and heavy books there are several on this list of yours that are on my TBR. J would say we agree on Lucy Barton, I also never found them that intriguing from the blurb.
omg i feel the same In Ascension by Martin Macinnes, except that i am not intrigued by it from the blurb itself :3
Ahh glad I'm not alone on this! Except for me the blurb did intrigue me and made me pick it up!
Haha, harsh! I loved I Have Some Questions For You. Conversely, I did not like The Secret History so I agree that they are not at all alike!
Ahhh but that raises an interesting point though! For those who didn't get on with The Secret History as much, they should give I Have Some Questions a try and potentially have an enjoyable time with it!

I am not reading any more Strout either. Zzzzzzzzzz
Same reaction to Ascension and dnf’d at around 40 %. One I wish I did not read and will almost certainly make the list is Demon copperhead.
With all the glowing praise around Demon it's surprising and refreshing to hear a different perspective. Thank you for sharing.
In my opinion you aren't really missing that much by skipping The Passenger (except frustration, weirdness, cringiness, creepiness).

Wow the entire longlist for 9 years! What an impressive achievement and best of luck for this year- I hope you get an enjoyable list! 😁
In Ascension was mid. You're missing nothing.
Good to hear!
You're so funny
Why thank you 😂
