Thank you so much for this video. I am a old school certified mechanic from the carburetor, points and condenser days but I must say this almost kicked my ass and had been putting it off for almost a year. I had bought a dashskins cover due to my dash disintegrating, ( 3rd Dodge, what's up with your dash plastic) then the heater core started leaking so I had all the parts but was very much procrastinating on this job. So due to the coronavirus and being stuck at home decided it was time to do this. I placed my laptop in the back seat and would play and pause step by step. First off let me add....CHOCK THE WHEELS !!!!!! After lowering the steering column at some point in the process I noticed I was slowly rolling in my driveway. So I engaged the parking break and thought I was good. So now I am at the point of loosening the dash bolts and letting the dash down and I hear this high pitch squealing sound like a belt slipping. I knew I had disconnected the battery and was like, "What the hell is that". The high pitch squealing sound was my wife screaming as I slowly rolled into the back of her Grand Marquis and finally came to a stop. Thank God I disconnected the battery and the air bag didn't smack me in the face....See I was following your instructions but there was nothing about rolling in them. When I let the dash down somehow the brake disengaged. It was a slow roll and minor impact but I almost spilled my Jim Beam. The real challenge came trying to get the new core in. I watched your video and did just like you did. I wiggled and beat the shit out of that heater core. After repeatedly watching the video and more Jim Beam I finally figured it out, it was the edges of the heater core tank that was catching the edges of the box. I took the handle of a screw driver and slightly tapped the edges where the tank and core come together to bend it in and waaallllaaa, it slid right in. Going back together wasn't bad at all and I was smiling like a proud puppy but my wife wasn't impressed until I undocked from her rear bumper. So....Thank you for the video, couldn't have done it without you, this is no job for the faint at heart and it does require half a half gallon of Jim Beam to complete, and chock them wheels...ya'll be safe out there and stay in place. We will get through this.

I'm having the problem of heater core not sliding into box, will try a screwdriver to get it to slide in
Ok , I got the heater core to maneuver by sticking a flathead screwdriver between the heater core line and separating the lines to line up the heater core with the black heater core box.

Mine rolled too, on flat ground. I was puzzled because none of these videos showed that! Other than that my only issue was that after getting everything back together I noticed my orange gear indicator wasn’t showing and I played with the white plastic thing, still couldn’t get it back. Guess i’ll just have to count what gear i’m in lol

I watched the part about getting the new htr core in several times and kept making adjustments till I got in on the 4th or 5th try, Take a break if needed cuz patience, minor adjustments plus some muscle all while you're performing body contortions is required. Worth it too, saved me a thousand bucks!

It's amazing how difficult they make heater core replacement these days. I have 2nd Gen Ram just like you but still the original core, thank goodness for that.

best video on this! everyone else cuts the foam pad or the tank but go to 16:22 in the video and watch close at the tubes! just push upon the pad with the tubes then drop the core in, then fish the tubes though... spent 30 minutes trying to get it in then watched this video very closely and that was the trick!

Great video made replacing mine a breeze! I have a manual transmission so I had to take out a few different things on the floor but essentially the same. My dash was already cracked but I lost a few chunks during the replacement haha but now I see how to replace that as well. Thanks for the video!

Nice work! Dashes can be so intimidating. Just take your time. Go for a walk if you get frustrated. Keep track of all screws/clips/etc.

I usually replace all the door sill screws that have a tendency to rust out with some stainless steel screws from the hardware store. It saves a lot of problems at a later date if I need to pull things apart to fix a problem.

the cummins engine is great though still after 330,000 miles, and thats only failed me twice in its life and that was the injection pump both times.

Thank you for this extremely helpful video. I used it to remove and replace the very leaky heater core on my ‘99 Dodge ram 2500 pickup, and aside from breaking some of the very brittle plastic on the dash it went pretty well. My big remaining problem is reattaching the steering column when raised back in place. The ‘nuts’ I removed to lower the column are strange, and I can’t get them to attach to the bolts they came off of when I lowered the column because they are too short. I’ve raised the column as much as possible, but they still won’t thread on because of the odd wings attached to them. Any suggestions that might help? Thanks in advance.

Pulling the dash look surprisingly easy, mine is leaking just a tad and I need to replace the fuse box while I'm there (asinine the dash has to come out to replace a fuse box).

Damn you took the long way. Took less than 30 mins on my 96 ram. Removed upper dash and cut the tubes off and used heater hose with double hose clamps on each side.
I have a 1995. What do you mean you removed the upper dash? I have to do this soon.
Let me just say, I'm not a mechanic. Thanks to your video you made a repair that our local mechanic said would cost $900 (which is definitely steep) seem like a walk in the park.
when disconnecting the battery ALWAYS disconnect the negative side first to avoid an accidental touch to ground a scaring the crap out of yourself or possibly having a battery blow up in your face
That clip you that you say is not needed it is needed that holds the heater core tubes stationary so they last longer and will not brake again from flopping around.

Can this heater core cause overheating at idle cause i see mines leaks for sure and i replace the whole cooling system except the heater core i unclogged it but notice the leak and still over heats at the light

No actually about 3 hrs taking my time.
Heater core leak is common on any 20 plus year old vehicle. The big reason is most people don't replace antifreeze with good anti corrosion type and the radiator and heater core rust.
Replace the dash while you went to ask that trouble? I sold a truck at a loss a few years ago because I didn’t want to go through all that trouble.
I have read a lot of reviews of this swivel heater core leaking with in a month to a couple of years has yours leaked or still good?
Still good to this day! Most people put to much pressure on the ends. Just be easy with it.

Does the air pass through the Ac core first or the heater core
this is kind of a pain.....the dash is alot heavier than you think.....when your ready to put new one in cut the firewall holes so its one big hole....an air body saw works great and it goes in much easier...when all done just take some great stuff exapanding foam and fill it from under the hood....use the firestop kind thats made to take heat..
Planning on changing mine cause the inside of the windshield is fogging up when I turn the defrost on, this video is great and eased my anxiety of tackling this job.. question did the new heater core take care of your fogging issue? And wondering if I should change the ac evaporator while I’m in there
Yes it was....also, Yes, AC helps to defrost windows.
Just finished and it’s a sweat lodge in my truck now, 😂 so much heat and windshield is fog free. Thanks to your video everything went smooth 👍..... next project is trying to piece my dashboard back together.... if anybody has tips I will be appreciative...

So the question I have is how reliable are the swivel joints on the heater core. I'm pretty sure I have to replace mine. My carpets not wet or discolored but my heat not stay hot. When I turn the blower on high the air cools off and does not stay hot. I have replaced my thermostat already and that didnt fix the issue.

Surprisingly holds up to the serious manipulation of the core install, i had my doubts but all is well👍🏻
Try flushing the heater core first, and bleed the system afterward. You remove the coolant hoses in the engine bay that send coolant to and from the heater core. Get a garden hose and wash out the core in the opposite direction of normal flow. It'll blow all the shit and corrosion out of the heater core and free up the coolant passages. Them blow the water out with some compressed air. Reconnect your coolant lines, top off the coolant in the radiator, and then bleed the system. You bleed it by parking the truck on a steep incline facing upward with the radiator cap off. That puts the radiator at the highest point in the cooling system and air will rise up to it out of the heater core. Run the engine at 2000 rpm with the heater turned on full blast. When the truck gets up to operating temperature you're done bleeding. Top off the coolant again and put the cap back on. Done. Your heat will likely work again if it was just weak before you started the job. If it still doesn't work, you can flush it again this time pouring radiator flush into the core and letting it soak to loosen the shit up more aggressively, then blow it out with the garden hose. I avoid doing that if possible because old cores can leak in spots if you soak them with a cleaner and open up a weak area of the core that was plugged with debris. Give it a shot.
Pin this so its on top please I mean chock your wheels even though its still in park as you drop the steering column shit goes into neutral had my ass dragging down the street because I live ontop of a hill had to hit the brake put one of the steering column nuts in to make it go into park crazy ride thats for sure I'm fixing it as I'm watching the video and it does help to cut the heater core pipes on the inside to save the hoses in the engine compartment
Just completed it thanks man for this video have heat now and not blowing steam up on my windshield old one I pulled out looked like its all brass with copper fins put new aluminum in its place
If I find the engineer..I'm going to have him install it himself by gunpoint...lol..
