- Welcome to a new Age of Mythology video, this time covering the War Elephants. War Elephants are tanky and good against buildings but super slow, and for that reason Camelry might be a better option depending on your playstyle.

I like to think of the Elephant as the poor man's myth unit - it doesn't take up mana to create it, it's generally good due to its health pool and it will substitute myth units if your statues were destroyed.
15 elephants fit in a roc, but 16 archers can't #gamelogic
the law of AoM does not allow more than 15 units.
It can only carry 15 souls.

If you wanna REALLY have a laugh, put a bunch of Titans against Arkantos (God) and watch them fly.
I guess Elephants are good units if you want to rush down buildings while being attacked by the enemy. Especially if you want to get rid of a Wonder but catapults are too squishy to reach them.
Also the fact that Rocs can transport them means you can perform a seige bomb stradegy.
They also are kinda like Myth units that don't cost favour which is pretty nice.
Except they don't have any special ability like every Myth units are supposed to have as well as costing favors, indeed...
I find they complement the other Egyptian castle units very well. In an army of chariot archers? Definitely very good meat shields! Specially in the late game you can just rush an enemy base and clear it in a matter of minutes.
For real if you Micro manage and distract enemy archers and "attack buildings" (TC, towers and Strongholds)
A sneaky Roc filled with 15 elephants ejected in the heart of their main city can really devastate their villagers.

Been a long time since I played Empires, but I was disappointed there were no Elephant Archers in AoM. It came out around the same time I watch LotR, so I was eager to see something like the Oliphant, a tank unit that could attack multiple targets.
original AoE had them as well as AoE2 with Rajas
And seing how often they get used in those games, it's not that sad that they're not in this game.
Would be a cool mod though...
And it could have potential in situations, I guess, if it got some cool moddifiers.
Oliphants were pretty cool in Battle for middle earth games however. But that came out later.
@@Cythil Oliphaunt/Mumakil in Battle for Middle Earth were AWESOME. I loved putting fire archers on top of them and parading around the map shooting/trampling everything.

I think Elephants are really good if these conditions apply:
You have a forward midgol
you are attacking, not defending
You don't need to secure Map Controll right now

I remember that Isis with Thot makes the elephants a viable option even bein able to spam them always that I had a good gold income.
I don't need effective units when I'm doing a Age of Empires II goth gameplay but with war elephants xD
They're best used as a siege unit with chariots behind them because they don't die so fast as regular siege. The enemy will be desperate to kill off those elephants leaving the chariots free to pick away at the units trying to kill the elephants or villagers trying to repair.

I only ever recruited 3-4 of these to act as frontline bullet sponges whilst my chariot archers did the real killing. Never realised they were quite this good against buildings though.

I remember using strategies of slowly building up a army and holing myself away, then revealing like 60 Contari and just rushing them and killing their walls and even fortified TC's in like 25 seconds

I like using elephants defensively. Keep some around a defensive line, then have them tank damage while towers and stronghold fire away. Their big health pool distracts enemies long enough to counter a fair number of assaults. Plus this strat bypasses their low speed since I don't need them to move far
They work wonders when doing an FH rush, 4 of they some camels and maybe a siege tower

How did you do the 1 on one spearman vs elephant test? I dont see any way how the spearman wins.. the horus upgrade only doubles its attack vs cav, making it 16 vs the elephants 14, while the elephant has 5x the hp.. the anubis and other horus upgrade add .7 attack each.. 1 spear will all of the special god upgrades still gets stomped by a completely un upgraded elephant..
My Egyptian playstyle is usually to wall up and focus on economy, then, with a little help from a Roc and Thoth, airdrop 15 fully upgraded elephants behind my enemies' bases to destroy their homes and any wonders. The free Roc from aging up I use first to scout the entire border and sometimes to transport villagers to an area by each corner to set up extra temples and strongholds (walled off for extra safety).
I'm not a quick player, I prefer the long slow game where I have an excessive amount of resources stocked up and several layers of double walls protecting me.
Means
A) You must play Isis as only Isis gets both Hathor and Thoth.
B) You'd suck vs mass colossus or fire giants, without the Nephy upgrades in the temple your priests would do nothing vs heavy mythic units. Colossus are also much more pop efficient than elephants, they'd shred two layers of wall and still have time to regenerate HP from trees and gold.
That's a strong bird to carry 15 elephants.
I would like a review on camelry.
I usually train them in small quantities as meat shields as they are really good at soaking up damage from archers. Can I micro my camelary to do the same thing to dodge the arrows? Yes. But I am not good at micro so the other strategy suits me better. imo the War Elephants are not "cav" they are more like slow moving tanky siege units that are really good against anything non spearmen in a push. I would not use them for skirmishes though.

Now that I see ppl thoughts, I thing an special ability like the Chinese general or maybe a debuff could work, I mean, I think it fits the role of the elephant aside siege, break lines
And the description of the elephant would make sense with that sort of ability

your probably referring to Thor's Ulfsark when choosing minor god with fountain, boar and wolf. They're very average even when fully upgraded but they excel at swarming the enemy as their unit train time is extremely fast. They're strong at sieging due to fast attackspeed when massed and excel at killing war elephants ironically. They're pretty bad vs altlantian because Altlantians will spam fanatics and arcnus at you and they're kinda bad vs zeus and greeks as whole. they're super strong vs egypt and china though and strong vs Odin who usually relies on cav.
@@dodang_9147 Ironically, you're more likely to find Forseti/Bragi/Tyr Ulfsarks from Loki in the late game than you're going to see them come from Thor. Thor is 60/40 in Classical between Freya and Forseti, 75/25 in Heroic between Skadi and Bragi and 75/25 in Mythic between Baldr and Tyr.
I can't find the reference, but IIRC FU Thor Ulfsarks actually give Fanatics a good fight on cost and pop. Ofcourse, that doesn't mean you should throw them against Fanatics.
@@devangnivatkar2649 Loki ends up going for it purely because he generally buy Forseti for Hensir rush upgrade and does not buy Njord because most Loki players objectively look to get Hei. They'll only go Tyr if they can win the game on the spot with his god power. The reason why Thor never goes for his Uber ulf build is because the gods that Thor has to choose have terrible myth units. If they buffed Troll,Boar and Wolf, than people might go for it. The other reason is Baldr provides Thor with the critical siege upgrade required on battering rams to siege properly where as Odin & Loki can just spam Mountain giants for siege so another buff that might help Thor to choose this build would be to buff Batista Siege as it is kinda trash.
@@dodang_9147 I've seen some Tyr picks from Loki here and there, it's not particularly rare for him to pick him over Hel. But yeah, Hel is preferred.
Thor's standard god-path isn't just because of MUs. Skadi has Frost Giant, Frost GP, Winter Harvest and Huntress Axe. Baldr is chosen firstly for Ragnarok and secondly for Fire Giants. Dwarven Auger and Sons of Sleipnir are the cherries on top.
I don't play as Egypt that much but yeah I've never really found War Elephants worth it. As Egypt my Migdol unit would be camelry instead, especially as Ra. I've always wanted to like the chariot archers but they just don't do the job either
In PvP Chariots are amazing because u can micro them and they are really fast
@@Nexotic0 yeah true enough! As Egypt I tend to find them more trouble than they're worth but that's just me. I only play noob lobbies. Usually play Greek or Atlantean anyway

Protoxx. I don’t think you tested properly. No way a FU spearman can bear a FU elephant 1v1 you must have had a mod on . Also did u test with Thoth upgrade too?
FU, no mods. I have never modded my game ever, this is simply the extended edition
The elephant should have 22 attack I believe . With Thoth upgrade they have 24 . Is that what they had? And the spears have 100% damage so they would be doing 24 damage an attack . But the elephant health is like 650 and the spears health is like 130. Thor bragi tyr ulfsarks are the most powerful against Calvary as they also have 100% increase but a higher attack with 16.
Ofc take into consideration armor. Spears have 62% and elephants have like 34* so let’s say the spears are doing double the damage each attack so say 48 vs 22. 48 x 12=572 so 12 attacks wouldn’t even kill the elephant
22x 8= 176 this damage goes beyond the spear health . The elephant should win with almost half health remaining
@@Nexotic0 I tested this on EE with a friend, elephants Thoth or not win with over half health when both spears and elephants are fully upgraded
I think the problem could be when u advance thru heroic age the camel and elephants have higher attack than it shows in ur video . I wonder if ur midgol units are weaker than normal

I was 2v2ing with friends, then my norse team mate died 30 min in. I made the game last 2 hours against my other 2 friends for spamming elephants. I made 250 elephants on total, almost won.

Elephants are good because they are not myth units.Myth units have many points and they can kill human soldiers but heroes kill easy the myth units.Elephants are not myth units,so heroes cannot kill them easy.If you have elephants you can win a battle,but if enemy has second line(archers),you need too archers to defeat the enemies.

I've got to say your videos on aom are quite bad at understandings the full lenght of what makes units strong and weak
High end pvp meta must be different then, I usually play vs irl friends or vs 2 Ai at once and basic unit counter knowledge is all I really need. These videos are for entertainment and some light education about a unit in general.

@@Nexotic0 things like hoplites have no actually bonus damage against cav units and at imperial age cost of units really Doenst matter only population count you should be comparing 2 elephant's to 10 hoplites(not only that but civs like Isis get more pop so even a 1 to 1 in pop cost Doenst cover it), not only that elephants are mainly just damage soaks and their size is a good thing more designed around being meaty front lines that soak damage for the backline.
I think that the elephant needs a new bonus, like vs standar infantery or a rechargable insta kill, cause has a lot of desventages, they are formed in midgols so you cant build other units while you are using it, and they cost a lot of resources and population.

I think I saw a mod once that gives it the minotaur special ability. That made a lot of sense. Would've been interesting to be the only non-hero/non-myth unit to have a special attack.
Just give it the ability to do trample damage like in Aoe 2
