    I love the gastraphete simply because it melts buildings with like 10 of them and their range is absurd, they basically can stay far away from all danger and continue causing havoc

      I don't get how its not higher up the list, You don't really need other siege units when you get the Gastraphetes. It has insane range, a couple of them delete buildings and they are also strong vs other units. They are also a lot faster than most other siege units./

      I'd place them in the high A tier. I find the trick is not to try and make them the base of your army because their attack animation is just too slow. They're also very squishy, so they get mowed down fast. Instead, you send 5-10 of them behind enemy lines to level a town center or clear some crucial buildings or kill a bunch of villagers, in and out. They're quicker than normal siege and have insane range, so if you can keep moving them around, their value quickly becomes huge.

      Upgraded Gastaphetes with burning pitch are probably the best siege in the game. Like 6 or more of them and you basically delete buildings. Houses are one hit. Towers go extremely quickly & all of it happens outside range. Definitely best as a flank style unit but they can cause so much damage so quickly and so much more agile than the normal siege

    Great video as always! Some more insights that might be interesting:
    6:10 Myrmidon vs Fanatic
    Both 3 pop. *Myrm* deals no bonus dmg vs Axemen & TA & Greek units - *can be countered and not usable vs Greek.* Fanatic deals no bonus dmg vs Archers, but has 5% more pierce armor than Myrm - that's okay. Also Myrm deals merely +50% vs MU with Beast Slayer, Fanatic +450% when heroized. *Most importantly both start with 10 dmg; Myrm has +50% bonus dmg (Hephaestus +20% more dmg) but Fanatic has +100% and thus hard-wins vs Myrm!!!* But Fanatic requires Palaces whereas Myrm can be built in all Barracks.
    TL;DR: Fanatic > Myrm in theory, but Fanatic can't be massed as easily as Myrm. So it depends on the comparison criterion, which are not used consistently in the video...
    - strength: 1v1 / pop comparison / cost comparison ?
    - availability: power spike at a stage of the game / limited by building (Palace) ?
    - usage: one purpose / multiple purposes ? active / counter ?
    ...nevertheless I think this video is a fantastic starting point!
    7:18 Khopesh
    Cost-efficient wise not only the best raiding unit in the game, but also decent among all infantry units. Some people go full Khopesh and it works in more than half of all matchups.
    8:20 Archers
    CA becomes bad pop-efficient wise in lategame when speed and HP won't matter, still uber in midgame. Funnily Arcus is by far the slowest moving archer, even slower than Gastraphetes. Bogsveigir OP.
    13:55 Hip
    is not arguably the strongest stat-wise, Jarl (HP-to-cost) and Contarius (cost, 5% more hack armor) are better. But as you said later, Hip comes at a state of the game where they can have great impact where the others come in too late.
    15:30 Raiding Cav
    RC win vs Hip in max pop fights because they outnumber too hard. If you let them fight with equal training time or cost, they lose. So if Norse takes no early fight and finds enough eco dmg, it's a win. Lastly, RC +100% bonus dmg vs Siege good vs Cheiro and in lategame.
    16:30 Contarius
    Cav line ups on EE only cost HALF resources, which gives Atty great momentum to switch into Cont. Still falls off really quickly, their time window is that short.
    19:55 Hetairoi
    You didn't talk that much about the EE buffs, they are heavy! HP 130 > 140 (Hip has 150), dmg 8 > 8.5 (Hip deals 10), speed 4.8 > 5.3 (Hip has 5.5), cost 55F 90G > 45F 80G (Hip costs 50F 80G, so only -5F). And remember they have 40% pierce armor, Hip has only 25% but only Hip +25% bonus dmg vs Archers. In total EE Hetairoi are monsters compared to Voobly. Yes they are *slightly* weaker than Hip. But at any point in time you can double click and send them straight past defenses into opponent's eco.
    22:10 Throwing Axe
    FYI they got buff on EE to deal +125% > +175% bonus dmg vs Fanatics, helps a lot. But all problems solved by Bogsveigir anyway.
    24:10 Cheiro
    Buff on EE to benefit from Armory ups and Leto's Volcanic Forge. They become monsters in lategame, don't tell anyone.
    Peltast/Turma
    Note that Heavy Archers gives +1 (Voobly) / +2 (EE) range and Champion Archers gives +2 range (both). Very underwhelming EE buff.
    26:50 Mounted Archer
    Not only that it misses moving Cavalry, it also has no hack armor (not like the other anti-cav units) and counts as ARCHER + CAVALRY. Since most Cavalry deal bonus dmg vs archers and you can also use anti-cav units against them (like against most Chinese units), they are sad indeed.
    29:35 Gastraphetes
    Cost originally 120W 80G, Voobly 100W (-20W) 80G, EE 110W (-10W) 70G (-10G). But their proplem is not the cost, rather their pop-inefficient DPS both vs units and buildings.
    31:10 Greek Heroes
    Bellerophon: On EE jump damage 100 > 60, with +600% bonus dmg vs MU that's 700 > 420 hack dmg total (mitigated by armor). Nope, he does NOT onehit MUs on EE. He's a completely different boy on Voobly than EE.
    Polyphemus: On EE slightly less dmg vs buildings but 540 > 700 HP. More range on his special and onehits MUs. There is no escape, he's a beast!
    34:40 Monk
    Still this unit has everything that it should not get when comparing it to AoE2. Starts to auto-convert once unit comes in 15 > 11 range. No recharge on conversion, so automatically continues its work nonstop! Converts military in 6-10s > 9-11s (still converts any unit in 1v1 before dying, can be healed by other Monks; reduced by 3s with Burials to the "old" value), Cavalry even keeps their line ups! Shennong converts MUs in 14s. Btw conversion requires you have free pop space, the only downside at all.
    35:00 Oracle Heroes
    With the -30% heroizing cost on EE for all 3 gods, advance at 3:55 and manually heroize 2 Oracles asap to push him off hunt at 4:15 - yes, the moment he just clicked up. Other than all other units on EE (Greek hero, Hersir, Pharaoh, Priest), Oracle Heroes get NO damage reduction in Archaic Age. Play the standard way from now on, except you are already ahead a mile.
    35:50 Vils
    In case anyone wondering, Greek and Norse Gatherer share the same gather rates. Chinese have the same rates until tier 3 wood+gold upgrade, which are less efficient for them. Thor Dwarves are obviously better with gold like all Dwarves, but also share the Greek Vil's wood rate without upgrade and even with Handaxe (and Vil's hunt rate without upgrades). Eggy need Pharaoh to gain roughly Vil's rate at one dropoff building.

      RC have a high training time
      TA suck and shall be lower tier under toxates, what saves them is because they have just wood cost
      Eggy Vills are better than Norse, slower but they build and eggy economic is about food and gold

      ​@@aleger620 RC 18s and Hip 20s in Classical, so Hip even worse. Still as I said before, when comparing training from same number of buildings Hip win... But in reality if you consider Norse's better gold gather rate they can exactly run 2x RC where Greek can only run 1x Hip (same food cost).
      Agree with TA.
      Sure you have Rain / Prosperity / Set animals that boost Eggy eco in midgame, but this does not change the fact that Norse Gatherers have better gather rates in food+wood+gold than Eggy Laborers. Eggy construct buildings slower unless empowered, the ONLY aspect Laborers are better is that additional repairers after the 1st one contribute 37.5% of their work force - only 30% in case of Greek/Norse/Chinese - and all of them have the same base repair rate.

      Anyway, Reason I retain Hippo better than RC, it's because about mainly the purpose of RC role is
      First, They are a raiding unit and 18 sec per unit are a lot for planning an early rush when you have just switched to classic.
      RC for me , counting all, are average unit at the best, stat wise they arent impressive except speed but it's ok if you think they were designed as Raiding unit, too bad the game changed a lot from vanilla, for ex. the patches give to a certain civ free towers but didnt adeguate at all after the early raiding units, no instead they nerfed more them.
      In origin RC has had a 15 sec training time, then because some kids complained a lot the devs set to 18secs, too much for a unit supposed or used for fast early raid.
      They may beat hippo at pair or 200+more pop because of 2 pop cost , but make a little MATH about the cost, you will see IT'S MEANINGLESS, you will see it's not worthy for the cost at all if u are norse, in early classic you dont have the economy for massing a lot them, and anyway as told it's not worthy, in any case and the best way for using them is make a squad of them and REALLY trying your best to NOT losing any of them, so not just spamming them, a decent norse player will avoid at all cost to ingage in direct combat his RC squad except when you are sure to win like some encricle/ closing them when opponent attack your walls , they are expensive and frail, and as we told too, they have high training time for a raiding unit and replacing them fast is not easy.
      When as Norse your opponent use Hips , depending from the maps etc, generally but not always, you will first taste some harassment from hero/es with their huge hp, after that the centuars spam begin bishotting your vills and then after a little while here incoming the hippos mono spam.
      What it may make Hippo better is because, mono hippo strategy (+ centaurs harassment) WORK WELL, Hipps are solid from classic to mythic (a little less there and last heroic ), but overall solid, good hp, good speed, very high attack, flexible for raiding or front line, good synergy with toxates and other units.
      >> RC are not frontline units, they are raiding units, that's their role and not one of the best at all, instead Hippis and one of the BEST OVERALL UNITS OF THE GAME.🤣🤣
      And that's why, if you using Norse, YOU TURTLE as a poor puppy for about 10 min 🤣🤣, build walls around your base/ resources and go for fast Heroic, yes maybe you are Odin you got those freak Ravens for raiding, yes you are Loki you have a spy GP for raiding the designed victim and his surrounding, yes seems all about this civ designed staff for early and go go raidings, but it's not like that, IT'S A TRAP XD, we as players we can just adapt about it, and do a fast Heroic a lot of times is your best bet.
      ( Anyway about early raids, You cant make something similar like Greeks, you may try with Ulfsark rush but in short words they are paper volatile shit in supremacy, especially without divine tech from Tyr and Bragi, and that's another long story too about Norse not having a real effective all around unit differently other civs but that's another boring story.. luckily we have Huskarl )
      About math:
      50 pop RC cost = 25 RC= 1000 food 1250 gold
      50 pop Hip cost= 16 HIP= 640 food 1280 gold

      AS we agreed, They arent excatly great, but there are reasons if at best their perform at best as soft counter infantry.
      if they were more effective, for example giving more base damage more and less a total damage more and less in pair with other anti-infantry unit , Loki may be crazy strong in classic, and second and the main reason I suppose, for Odin/ Thor pressing Ragnarock for how it is in game actually and several maps, it will be almost like pressing auto-win button, the power spike can become very strong.

      The other wood is massing there for nothing after got some eco techs and made the chariots squad if you macro them decently they will survive until the end-game XD, You have just go later exchange in gold to market and use it for spamming mercs and win while maybe your opponent is making a push with 4 TC 🤣🤣🤣
      For your info, with 5/6 eggy villies you offset the disadvantage of slower building time and dont forget the build, norse villies no 🤣
      It may sound weird I am not telling the eggy economy is the strongest of the game.
      They have maybe the best bOOm economy, for about 40 min they domain, but after some times all the gold mines in the map are dropped out, they start to lose terrain and they have problem to sustain their high cost military.
      If you are using Norse and survive all that time, not just only vs Eggies, despite at first sight seem a raid civs, crap buildings etc Norse are probabily the best civ at very very last end game, for their military pop/ cost, ability to build everywhere, weirdly they have huge chance of success in a war of attrition XD 🤣🤣🤣

      Long post:
      1. hippikon VS RC
      56 pop RC cost = 28 RC = 2520 resources = 504s training time
      63 pop Hip cost = 21 hip = 2520 resources = 420s training time
      28 RC > 21 hip
      Also greek has military academy, archery range and stable while norse only has longhouse. Unless you go pure hippikon norse will have more longhouses than you'll have stables. And if you go pure hippikon they'll make ulfsark and force you to change your compositon so you'll end up either spending more for your military buildings or having less stables than they have longhouses. So when it comes to training time it's really not a big difference between RC and hippikon early game and late game it becomes irrelevant.
      2. TA
      Let's compare TA with toxotes/arcus. Overall their cost, population and training time is very similar so we can compare them 1v1.
      TA are better than toxotes/arcus against:
      -infantry
      -cavalry
      -siege weapons
      -buildings
      -flying units
      -anti archers (generally anti archers have half the damage of archers, +300% against archers, +100% against TA. For example peltast deal less damage than toxotes against TA even with their bonus damage.)
      Toxotes/arcus are better than TA against:
      -anti infantry (TA loses to most archers)
      -other archers
      -prodromos
      So why are TA bad? If you compare them with anti infantry like hyspaspist/axeman they look bad. If you compare them with archers like toxotes/arcus they look good. Consider them as archers and that norse doesn't have any anti infantry units, just an archer unit that can be used as a soft infantry counter like any other civ can use their archers.
      3. villagers
      "you mainly need 2 resources, food and gold"
      Sure, they need gold instead of wood for buildings. That means as eggy you put on gold the villagers you would put on wood as norse and that evens it out. Without empowerment and rain (Ra) / prosperity (Isis) / animal shenanigans (Set) eggy economy would be terrible early game.
      "all the gold mines in the map are dropped out, they start to lose terrain"
      No. All markets gather the same. But eggy markets are free and can be empowered. When all gold mines expire eggy has the best gold economy in the game.
      "Norse are probably the best civ at very very last end game"
      I tend to think the same way but there is a catch. Very very end game means there will be no forests left on the map. At that point eggy >> any other civ by far. If wood is no problem then maybe.

      I tested 20 eggy villagers VS 20 greek villagers and the greek ones were still significantly faster.

    Having almost exclusively played the campaigns, clicking in because I was curious about the actual meta, I was stunned to discover that, in fact, the campaign's assurances that Egyptian Classical units are terrible and should be immediately replaced by Migdol units were a lie all along...

    contarius heroes with the upgrades is absolutely insane for raiding everything, its one of the best units in game imo

    I always found it weird that Zeus got the Myrmidons but only Hades has access to Achilles. Makes sense that Achilles is for Hades but yea considering the Myrmidons were led by Achilles, just seems weird lol

      Also the fact the dwarfs are master craftmans with ability of crafting godly weapons or just giving life to their crafts by bending force or nature of things themself ( they craft using echos or scream of mythical beasts or the noise of sea or mountains for example XD) and then...
      in the game they cant build a stupid norse buildings made in court and sawdust that have half of the HP than other civ XD

      Achillies leads the myrmidons during his time on this earth, yes.
      Zeus made the myrmidons however, and they existed both before and after Achillies, so they are available to Zeus
      The river Styx, made Achillies what he is. the curse/blessing of the river that flows through the realm of hades, is why Hades is who gets him

      Hippolyta was kidnapped by Theseus, yet they fight together in AoM. Also there are multiple stories about Hippolytas death, but 1 of which is being killed by Theseus. Which I always found weird.

    I love flooding the opponent with mercenaries and the upgraded elephants that train instantly with Thoth. That allows the second wave of chariots and catapults to take cheap shots at units and buildings from range. And the third wave of camels for cav that will be sent in response.

    I’m new to AOM so I don’t know much about strats yet but i’m finding 22 pop age up into double range toxodes as hades really effective

    I’d love to see a mod where the players get access to randomized set of units instead of the ones standard for their civ. Like the mod you played a while back that randomized minor gods but for everything!

    Looking back on this tier list, i recently found some love for the peltast against Ra. The exTra range makes it a nice unit to reach the son of osiris, and counters chariot archers. Not amazing vs camels, but with hoplites, they do fine.

    I love gastraphetes but they do need a buff as they die so quickly even from infantry.
    And please for the love of god give Perseus the full Medusa ability! Some hades love

    You forgot to mention when playing as Ra, Skin of the Rhinos upgrade makes those Laborers more stronger. Possibly if lucky, getting a relic boosting the HP of villagers is a plus. I think they're arguably A tier with Ra.

    I think Portable Rams are good on EE if backed up by Bogsveiger and Throwing Axemen. Literally one of the strongest heroic age pushes in game. Perseus as well, killing 3 myth units a minute is kinda bonkers, especially vs a civ such as Norse who tries to get mass fire giants out (or Frost Giants).

    Portable ram is insanely good if you use it properly, especially if fully upgraded. Cheap, takes less population and pretty quick too.

    I think the general for china is actually pretty useful if you micro it well. You really only need 1-2 max and it buffs the units around it for a short time. As long as you can keep them from dying they can be pretty useful. I also think you under rated the gastrophetes a little bit. They can get a lot of value if you use them right.

    This is why I needed all the overview and how to play gods cause I would always default to the Ulf. It was and is my only play and as such: Ulfsark is S tier and should always be spammed as your main unit.

      Weak aura: deliberately consider your army composition, trying to mix in multiple unit types and trying to counter your opponent's composition
      Strong aura: spam Ulfsark all game long, get Mithril Breastplate from Forseti, Call of Valhalla and Swine Array from Bragi, Berserkergang from Tyr, keep spamming Ulfsark until Victory message comes up

    Been playing the game casually for years, but not familiar with the online scene or the 'competitive' meta. Question: If you want to counter, say, Archers, what guides your decision about whether you make Cavalry or Counter-Archers? When would an Attie player choose Contarius over Turma, or vice-versa?

      This is a pretty hard question to answer. Counter archers are only good vs Archers, where as Cavalry are good vs Archers and equal vs Cavalry. So you can make a decision based on that I guess?

    7 contorius heros with upgrades are needed to take down a tc without micro and in a quick enough fashion, even regular contorius' with the threat of heroing on the peripherals can be a major threat, and they work well with most units and can run away from anything (dont even need to play oranos)

    Justice for gastrophetes rip 😭
    I play hades usually just for this unit. You mass this on the ai and it is a win for sure. Just put some hefty defense/hp units to block, like a bunch of cyclops and heroes. Watch the town literally melt. And it is decent vs units too. Very underappreciated.
    And priests for Egypt are nuts. They can gather relics with that upgrade, super useful. But a ranged vs myth that has bonus and heal? Awesome. They suck vs normal units, but the ai loves to spam myths out late game especially Atlantis. So it gets useful.

    Destroyers are honestly underrated and deserve S tier.
    -They are faster than standard siege weapons and only need a compliment of Arcus to handle most threats.
    -They can fight back against attackers MUCH more effectively.
    -They are cheaper and quicker to train than siege weapons.
    -Groups of 8-10 destroyers can quickly raze a base to the ground if they arent stopped.
    -They handle cavalry better than Murmillo and can even hold their own against most infantry.
    -They also spank myth units pretty hard when you convert them into heroes.

    I really enjoy your content buuuuuuut,.... ,I play AOM since release, okay I have never played against real people, KI only, buuuut if you really think the norse ram is D and the gastraphet is C you have to be lost. These units melt every building in seconds, they are more supportive because they are maybe 2-3 pop and not 4-5 but they are so under rated. Don't forget the pacing of the ram and the anti inf bonus of the gastraphet! :D
    And one serious question: Why is the peltast so low?

    would put spearman in C because it gets outclassed by cammels who are faster, hit harder and are more general purpose
    and because egyptians get so migdol focused on late game, axeman is S tier because it fills in the gap they have with lack of frontline anti-infantry

    since when myrmidon 2pop this aint vanilla anymore boity boy! Perseus done dirty as well imagine having a unit that can obsolete frost giants and put it in D tier :(. The other greek heroes obviously more consistent and can do other stuff than counter myth units but perseus good at what he does.

    Toxotes belong in A tier IMO. Especially with bogs in s and arcus in a
    Hippikon are also A for me, because they suck late game.

      Egyptian villagers gather much slower than greek. With empowerment they gather faster than greek. Fully upgraded chinese villagers have slightly slower gather rate on wood, gold and farms than fully upgraded greek villagers.

    Raiding cav beat hipikon with equal pop, and cost, and are way faster. Their base hack armor is the highest in the game for cav which makes them better against hack units too. Contarious is just an expensive weaker hippikon. Definitely the worst in the game

    Does anyone else sort of see like a face with black hair when you're unfocused looking at a murmillo? Also pointing out Egypt just why it's so OP; mercs, catapults, rocs, Ra can just spam like basic camels and they beat cavalry 'and' sort of do well against everything, imo Mercs should never have been spammable and is not balanced, at 0 pop they should let you spawn like 1 or 2 of each at a time. Just enough to maybe defend a little bit or take out a siege weapon, do some damage, with that 0 pop they cost, not like, potentially a whole army that tends to beat everything. It should be a 'small boost' that could have been added to 'all civs' not just Egypt (like mercs can become militia for Greek, etc., it's clearly just not balanced if it's only Egypt), they definitely needed a nerf and never received one (even noting EE did do some mostly good things and also added some bad things as well). In 1v1 it is a bit worse due to being expensive, will quickly expend your gold, but in team games it can make a game very slow with spamming merc armies to just defend a TC, and high/unlimited gold trading that adds like literally 14-30 pop worth of defense (and the cav is as you said probably the strongest inthe game and will just take out any siege weapon) for free. Lastly anyway I felt like the chinese cav archer is a Egypt counter so against Egypt (all their migdol units are cavalry) or against a cavalry user it's generally situationally a good unit.. not great but at least not a d-tier one; even so China is deceptively good by being able to spam these units.

      ​@@TheJuliusCo There's a super easy fix for that. Make the shooting of catapult a special attack with recharge time. Still deals the same damage and shoots in the same interval. Side effect: Now you can "see" when it is ready to shoot again. But main benefit: Whenever a unit ungarrisons, this triggers its recharge as if the special was used. So a catapult dropped from a Roc has to wait 4s before it can shoot. Already implemented this in a mod to see if it works, and it does like a charm. Just my 2 cents.

    Fanatic are my most hated unit cause they are just amazing at everything and unlike Myrmidons you cant use myth units to counter them and there armor is way to high for a unit with just two swords

      He's mixing up the 'nilla' AoM (i.e. no The Titans) stats with current ones. They used to be 2 pop pre-Titans, but limited to Fortresses only.
      If you want to check, play the last scenario of the main campaign. The main campaign still uses a legacy AoM v1.0 i.e. release version dataset instead of the latest one. You also get things like super cheap Hephaestus techs, Raiding Cavalry with only 10% hack armour, and Ulfsarks with only 5% pierce armour!

    I think it's really telling how important speed is in this game - the Peltast is actual garbage and probably does more harm by blocking your other units and wasting population than good, but the Turma is a civilization defining unit that is very useful.

    15 Gastrapethes one-shot an egyptian ballista tower.. They are also very accurate against units and their damage per-shot is above toxotes so you can focus-down strong targets very easily.
    Just sayin'.
    It's actually ridiculous how insanely overpowered that unit is... For what they are, they do damage beyond comprehansion.

    Completely wrong about gastraphetes.
    If you classify it as a sige unit it cost less than a catapult and is far better at defending itself.
    If you categories it as an archer it is better at countering enemy siege and doesn't feel less effective than a toxote.
    Imo it would be A tier in two independent categories and for that I would probably slap it down as an S tier archer.

      I actually did the math on the gastraphetes. If you don't have burning pitch it isn't even close. If you do have burning pitch it still is not as effective at killing off buildings as either the Helepolis or the Petropolis. So in terms of taking down buildings the only area it shines in is a side build where you can only really sneak an archery range in. As an archer, you gotta remember it costs 3 pop. I'd rather have a bunch of chariots than a bunch of gastraphetes. :P
