I bought my wife a brand new PT Cruiser in 2002 (it was a 2001 still on the lot from previous year). It was fully loaded, heated seats, compass, AM Stereo (and FM Stereo obviously), the only time I have ever bought a fully loaded vehicle. Ever. We both loved that car. In 2011, a drunk hit her head on at 55 MPH. That car saved her life. No broken bones, just some scrapes and a fuzzy brain. It was so comfortable for long trips, got 30 MPG, and she could fit all her junk in it for her trips. I miss that car.
We love Pt Cruiser in Brazil. I´ve had one since 2013. I hope to keep it forever. That´s retro style, that´s American. It´s totally different from all the cars we see today and it never seems to get old. Its look is always calling the attention of whoever passes by.
Also window switch is centered for the same reason the dash is symmetrical, cheaper for rhd markets, same dash, same door panels, only different dash inserts
I'm on my second Cruiser. I bought an 04 last month to replace my aging VW and hold me over till the used car market looks more appealing. My first was an '06 when they were fairly new. This one has 85,000 miles, outlived the grandma that owned it since '07. I paid $2200 cash for it. I always liked the way they looked, I remember seeing the concept in magazines in the late '90s and the hype they had. I do like the earlier one better, having had one of each.
I bought my PT Cruiser in February 2003. I was freshly divorced, wasn't certain where my life might be headed, and wanted an inexpensive car with a stickshift, front wheel drive and lots of space. Oddly enough I didn't buy it for the styling as much as the legroom. I'm tall and the PT Cruiser allowed me just enough leg room to feel comfortable, which the Toyota Matrix did not. I drove it for 16 years and over 120,000 miles. I didn't really love the car as much as I appreciated it. It had enough torque to handle towing and launching small sailboats, was roomy enough that I was able to pack the things I needed when I moved for temporary jobs. She wasn't the most fuel efficient, or entertaining to drive but she was good enough and she rarely let me down. I finally replaced her a few years ago because I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to find another utility car with a stick if I waited much longer. On the whole, she wasn't the most memorable car that I had, but she did get the job done.
Yeah. I feel like sedans as we see them today were a fad. Look at "sedans" from the 40s and before. Taller with high drivering potions and a hatch area. @@hakeemsd70m Nah, the 4Runner, RAV4, Bronco, Bronco Sport, Highlander, and Gensis and Buick crossovers (except the encore) all look good. If they didn't the RAV4 wouldn't sell 1 million cars around the world. And other automakers wouldn't kill sedans.
4:54 Love those central rear window switches. I was traveling to Kansas city with a few friends and suddenly heard the right rear window open on the freeway. It turns out that my friend unwittingly rested her foot on one of the switches. Somehow in the 16 years I've owned this car, that has only happened once.
Thanks for the awesome review man, you have a cool sense of humor that I think you should implement into your reviews. It sorta brightens the day and shows your personality more. Peace ✌
We had one. 2005 Touring Edition. Was a pretty good car till I had the timing belt replaced, never ran right after that. Regular maintenance, waxed every 6 months and a diet of mid-grade. Wife drove it for close to ten years and it was time to upgrade. In the end we gave it to one of the G-kids....and it was junk in about 11 months. It really wasn't a bad "throw away after use" car.
A few years ago me and my buddy loaded 2 big recliner type living room chairs in the back that someone picked up in one. Crazy how much room there was.
Next you should Test something like my modified one. The one that I still have is a 2005 Convertible, Touring Turbo. 4 speed auto, 180hp 210ft stock. But mines got a full $600+ stereo system, Cold air intake, Performance coil pack, Catback exhaust, Tuned for 93, currently makes around 250ish is my approximate, and maybe 230 to the wheels. And shes got 158K miles!! Its a fun car and the convertible makes it fun in the summer.
This does sounds fun!!! Wish I lived in a dry state to own one one day. Might plan on moving to one just to have a convertible I envy you. Nice little unique car with great purpose!
@@BigNuckingFutz Thank you!! I’m also been slowly fixing my 06 GT, which is getting an SRT4 with a upgraded turbo. They are a great platform, and it’s what I’ve learned everything on since I was 10yrs old
almost 100K on the pop up headlights video ! that's a huge one ! (and yes, i watched the review. i like the PT cruiser's look, and now i know i like the inside too)
It has a retro design that was popular in the 90's and early 2000's, which was pretty desirable. But the build quality of Chrysler was (and still is) nothing to write home about. And because of its weight and height, I don't think it handled well, including the GT models. So apart from the looks, those might be other reasons why people hated it IMO. Not-so-known fact: the person who designed the PT Cruiser (also called PT "loser" by people who hate it) later went to GM to design the Chevrolet HHR, which IMO, was better looking.
I bought a US spec 2002 in Germany through military car sales program. My biggest complain was the stupid electronic Governor that limited the car to 105 mph, which was a bit slow for the Autobahn. I wish the turbo was available from the start because the power train was ok but not great. It handled pretty decent in the Alps. I like the interior design and how much cargo it can haul for a little car. I had that car for 7 years and I love it. I found it strange the 2008 has manual mirror when my 2002 had power mirrors. The center window controls are fine. All Mercedes cars had them back then and I am with the German engineers on this one and don’t see why they need to be on doors.
I bought a new one of these in 2006. It was the route 66 edition. It was yellow with chrome wheels. I loved it. Kept it for 6 years. Wish I had kept it longer. My sister always called it the PT Loser.
I'm on my 2nd one ('07 with a manual trans). Got it with only 36,000 a little over a year ago. The previous one had over 160,000 on it. I had to do a bunch of work to it to make it reliable for long trips, but the parts for it were cheap and some of the work I did myself. I sold it to a friend and I know it's got to have over 200,000 on it now and it's still running great. Like all vehicles, maintenance and oil changes are the key to keep any vehicle running. The PT mobile is no different. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
The exterior design is horrible but this car comes with many perks. A friend of mine has one with 200k miles and no problems other than the ECU that made the transmission crazy. It is super comfy on city roads, enough power and fantastic cargo space, better than any other normal car I can think of. I’d have one if I needed the room.
I just bought a 07 base. 134000 on it. I bought it because it was cheap 2900 and ran good. I would have preferred something different but I've since changed my mind . I'm absolutely obsessed with it. I'm going over everything on it and parts for it are incredibly cheap. I love this funny looking thing!
Regular Car Reviews has a great and hilarious review video of this car on UA-cam. Also, I had a rental one of these back in 2009, when my VW was rear-ended in an ice storm… my experience with this car wasn’t great, it handled terrible in the snow and had some weird shifting issue with transmission. I don’t think it had ABS or it wasn’t working. Leg and rear cargo space were the main good things in that car.
My dads friend had a PT Cruiser and it was such a pile of junk. Let's just say it is a miracle it didn't leave him stranded or kill him. He sold it and he thinks he has seen it driving around. I just remember it burnt so much oil and coolant and would violently shake at idle.
Hey man! I have a turbo one and a classic one! Just saying the turbo one holy dan it’s actually fast! Mine is a Platinum serie! And with no seats, and low fuel it’s launches pretty great! The best thing is that no one expects it to beats most cars! Especially if a V6 Muscle car wants to race they get a nice suprice! Also I have everything electric including seat heating and great working cruse control! It’s a thumbs up for me!
A good friend of my has a Crusier (I don't know what year) with manual tran. He hates it! He had to have repairs done at one go to repair all the issues at the same time, and the total cost was ~ $4K including a head gasket leak. He won't take it on a long road trip because he doesn't trust it to make it back home. It did ride like a compact truck.
Chrysler was very cheap when they built the PT Cruiser as they used cheap materials. It's also weird they put the window controls in the middle console instead of on the door.
The switches are in the middle so it's easier to make a right hand drive version. It also saves on making a passenger window switch. Chrysler cut costs wherever they could.
I wouldn't have bought one new,but i think they're cool looking,as I often enjoy quirky looking cars! 😍😍 They sold them here in England & the rest of Europe, too. The European market ones were built in Graz,Austria. The same plant that manufactured the European market Crossfire,300,& Voyager,at least. European market Neons & Sebrings were built in North America,I believe.
The "Limited" version is the one to get, and any less-equipped one hardly does the car justice. With the Limited, you got 16" wheels, a better-tuned touring suspension (ironically, not available on the "Touring" package), power everything (yes, mirrors, too), more airbags, more speakers, and better use of color-matching both inside and out.
I can't say I hate the PT Cruiser, as I have a Maisto GT Cruiser that I (intentionally) bought in my younger days, but I can't say for sure if I still like it like I did as a preteen I can, however, say that I'm not a fan of Chevrolet's attempt to copy the PT Cruiser with the HHR...
GM actually recruited the PTC'S designer (Brian Nesbitt) to craft their version. So, does that mean Nesbitt copied his own work? ;-) But, yeah, I don't care for the HHR as much, either. I think its front end is more handsome, but the interior is very spartan compared to the Cruiser's, and the interior is where I usually am when I'm driving.
5/2024 just sold my 2003 f150 since I have an office job and it was ridiculous to drive a 6 inch lifted monster w 35 inch tires only 10 min away from home, bought me a 2007 pt cruiser w 100k miles and couldn't love it more, only 1/3 of the gas I used to buy, way easier to drive and park, just a lovely querky beater car 🚗 to drive from a to b and get groceries and kids to school 🎒

But I will say. It's horrible to drive. Was one of the cars I learnt to drive in. Not enough power and feels like you'll flip it going around any corners.
honestly... I don't hate it but I have some things to say about it.. the interior is depressing *to me* I don't know if the did the window switch for this reason, but most manufacturers that put the switches in the middles is because they don't want to re-design the door panels for when the steering wheel is on the opposite side. what they did with my car. I met someone around here with a 2.4 turbo and manual.... that thing was fast. I want one as a sleeper but idk how long I can look at that Interior
Where's the rear shelf that sits in the back? There's five different positions - one of which that said shelf can be made into a table with folding leg. I myself own a '01 as a '07, I find these are very easy as simple to work on, their size is preferable over a larger car because you can get into tight spaces. Another plus is that you sit higher and can see the road, a Chevy Cobalt no. Entry as exiting you can get in and out as well.
Its also true that they can have MANY mechanical problems. Depends on its history and previous owners. They were cheap and affordable to a younger generation. Typically kids just put gas in them and try to sling the guts out of them, never do PM's and run 'em into the ground. If you cant change a alternator or radiator out you might should reconsider buy one because it may take you a little mechanical talent to bring one up to a reliable condition. Keep your maintenance up and fix stuff when it needs fixing! That applies to everything in life.
I went to jasper from saskatoon on my 2001 pt crusier i love style seats fun ride but reason to hate is the really bad over heating and coolant leaking problems
I actually love PT Cruiser. And Plymouth Prowler. And Chevrolet SSR. And Nissan Cube. Honda Element as well. Anyone who dares to be different and creative has my support. For me, most hated cars are Toyota Corolla and Camry, Opel Astra and Zafira, Renault Thalia, last 2-3 generations of Volkswagen Golf, any Kia or Hyundai... As boring as PTA meeting in suburban Baltimore.
Me personally I love the concept of the pt cruiser but hate the reliability factor of it . Put a Honda or Toyota drive train in it and I would buy it in a heartbeat.
If Chrysler hadn't gone so hard retro and had better quality this could have been an early Kia Soul competitor. Quirky design yet tons of room and an upright seating position. These didn't age well and got cheap quickly. I always found it weird that the hatchback was only a 4-door despite the existence of a 2-door convertible. Chrysler could have made a 2-door fixed roof to compete with the Beetle and look a little sportier. It's not like the Sebring didn't have various body styles.
PT Cruiser and Aztek are car with great designs, they were just ahead of it's time There are currently cars so hideous, with big parts, bit headlights, they look as if someone has been blowing and blowing, horrible!!! And they still keep buy them 😂🤣 I just can't take em seriously when they talk bad about these
The PT Cruiser in this configuration - hate it. Gutless engine, problematic unreliable transmission. Get the PT Cruiser Turbo like Doug Demuro reviewed, along with a manual transmission, then it's one peppy hot rod!
3:20 I heard they did that to make the process of switch from left to right hand drive more easy. You notice how everything is very symmetrical and can easily be flopped over? At least I saw that logic on a history video of this.
Either way, like Em'or Hate Em' I like them and will be purchasing a 08' with 80 thou original miles! Future Collectable? Maybe, Will Never Be Worth A Lot! Who Cares!
I bought one from my roommate church friend (2008) for 1,000. I have yet to drive it. It's the ugly electric blue one and it's ugly, imo, but if it gets me safely from point A to point B, it's a win in my book. For now.
If Chrysler would just make one SUV or car that was just as high quality as the Pacifica (the new one). It would sell , people are holding out what little hope they have for em. But alas these pleas are futile
dont really get why they are so heavy a subaru outback isn't classified as a truck how ever the GL series did... also the hood looks like a toilet seat
I have a really nice 03 Pt GT with an auto stick transmission. Also there's a shelf in the rear for tailgating that comes outward, which is missing on your review. Horsepower is around 250 because of the exhaust I put on and air flow kit. Also, not many know that it's the only car in history to come with factory flames. I have that on my car as well. If you want pics lmk. Great review

I got one as a gift! Forrest green! Thanks grandma and grandpa
It will be my second "weird" car since I now have a Chrysler Crossfire !!
Those window controls are in center so they can decrease cost of lright hand drive models
Would it be a good deal for this car @65k mile at $3500?
I'd jump on it.
Thanks for the license plate. Now i can tell if this car is still alive
The guy who designed the PT Cruiser also designed the Chevrolet HHR.
That was cool! excellent video!
PT Cruiser and Aztek are car with great designs, they were just ahead of it's time
There are currently cars so hideous, with big parts, bit headlights, they look as if someone has been blowing and blowing, horrible!!! And they still keep buy them 😂🤣
I just can't take em seriously when they talk bad about these
Im buying one tomorrow
Did you ever do a PT cruiser turbo with a stick yet? I have one I’m in Jersey and I got work done to it. Just FYI.
The PT Cruiser in this configuration - hate it. Gutless engine, problematic unreliable transmission. Get the PT Cruiser Turbo like Doug Demuro reviewed, along with a manual transmission, then it's one peppy hot rod!
I like it but every one I found last time I looked had issues
my god father had ones of those with the fake wood on the sides.
If it wasn't a Chrysler it would be on my convertible list.
I just sold my pt crusier after 2 years love and hate relationship
I have that new bright rc too!!
wait why does my 2009 pt cruiser have auto mirrors i thought that was just the old 2001 2002 etc models?
3:20
I heard they did that to make the process of switch from left to right hand drive more easy. You notice how everything is very symmetrical and can easily be flopped over?
At least I saw that logic on a history video of this.
you are welcome
They moved the window switch's due to children getting trapped in the windows. (It was a safety concern that auto makers tried to get ahead of)
It was supposed to be a Plymouth but they went out of business
@6:00 and while those rear seats are out you can give that nasty interior a good hosing. 😆
I like my 1998 ford escort lx
Exact one I might get
I don’t get why people hate this car, all I know is that at least it’s not a Kia Soul lol
this car looks in my opinion like they wanted to make it look classic like a car from 50s, but failed
For now.
Tbh I think this car is kinda cute
i want one i want to get a turbo convertible
What’s the Price ?
If Chrysler would just make one SUV or car that was just as high quality as the Pacifica (the new one). It would sell , people are holding out what little hope they have for em. But alas these pleas are futile
dont really get why they are so heavy a subaru outback isn't classified as a truck how ever the GL series did...
also the hood looks like a toilet seat
I love pt cruiser😃
I'd love to say that I love it's looks but the rear end look kinda blunt with this boring rectangular rear door... Kinda ruins the whole look
As they say in Texas "El Paso"
I think I would be a little more accepting of these if they weren't such unreliable dumpster fires. Seriously, these things are horrible to own.
I wonder why and how people get 250k miles out of these
Why was this car so damn popular? Its sooo ugly, especially the wood panel version. I cant believe anybody bought the wood version, LOL!
Because it looks good and it's roomy, I would assume. I don't know if it was cheap or not.
I.hate it
This car us overall sucha piece of shit but the 2.5 turbo where fun to drive irs just laughably unexpected
2.4 my b
