My 2004 PT Cruiser is the Base model, with 2.4 and 5 Speed. It runs like a top! It currently has 97,000 miles. I changed the Timing Belt, and Water Pump one time. The body on these cars is built as solid as a tank. Doors, Locks, Windows, everything is rock solid. The car runs strong and smooth. PTs are as quiet as you would expect from a much larger car. BTW: Chrysler PTs weigh 3,000 pounds! And the Cargo Space is great: You have a real truck!
I have one, it's 2001 2.0, the description of this car in this clip is quite correct, and my conclusion is also, despite all the bad sides the car has, is a really good and cool car. Such a cool design family van won't ever find for that money. Tastes varies, but this IS a cool car
I got a 2003 limited edition 2.4L 5 spd. It was a gift from my wife as an alternative of an antique car and I really love it. I fix a couple of things due to a 21 years of tear and wear but the car runs solid, is a rust free, is super comfortable and is fun to drive. For me is a combination of an antique car with the modern perks. Is like to drive an old VW Beetle Type I that can reach 80+ mph and have air conditioner.
my 2005 Pt Touring is still going strong at 195,000 miles and I've been able keep a very respectable 28 MPG with simple changes like E3 Spark plugs and upgraded Plug wires and a high floe air filter with Royal Purple 5w-30 engine oil..... anyone who puts hate towards these, really don't understand that mainly routine maintenance will keep any car going for much longer than the automobile industry designed it to. Rubbish I had one ! Had 3 kids and as it had no transmission tunnel there was plenty of room, also it looked different than the run of the mill box on wheels. Never let me down once .. it was a bit thirsty tho 🤷🏼♂️
Great video Joe! It's nice to see somebody defending the PT Cruiser's more positive points for a change! I never thought they were terrible cars....maybe not AMAZING, but not bad! If you wanted more performance, over here in North America, there was the Chrysler PT Cruiser GT, with pretty much the same turbo drivetrain the first-gen Dodge Neon SRT-4 got! There was also a convertible version! As for concepts, the Plymouth Pronto was the first, but you missed the Chrysler Prontp Cruiser concept! It was the in-between between the Plymouth Pronto concept and production and was glorious, especially the amazing shade of gold!
I was in Texas in 2007 and went to hire a car, when told that all they had was a PT Cruiser I was not too happy but thought ok I will take it, after driving it that afternoon I was staying at a hotel and in the morning I was due at a meeting, I went out to find a flat tyre and was late to the meeting after which I went back to the car hire company and on being told that they could let me have a Nissan Pulsar or take the car down the road to have a new tyre fitted, I really wanted to keep the PT Cruiser, not the best performing car or the best handling but I found it pleasant and easy to drive, after a few weeks I was reluctant to return it.
The PT Cruiser gets hate from yanks for no good reason. As a car, sure, it sucks, as do countless other American cars from 20 years ago. Have you ever driven a Le Sabre or a Taurus? They're (a sweary word that rhymes with "smite.") This is pretty much rock bottom for these cars. 40 years ago, Gremlins and Pacers were sold for pocket change. Now they cost an arm and a leg. As nostalgia for the 2000s grows, these cars will be treasured as icons of the era.
@@blakenelson7179 Wait until they start doing the 20 years ago movies about 9/11. Every other car will be a PT, just like every car in a 60s movie is a red Mustang, a C3 Corvette, or a Beetle.
Our 2001 PT in my ownership is one of the best cars Chrysler made. Ours has heated leather seats, a cool moon roof, many interior attributes advanced for the day, and, I think it is almost timeless in design. Never had a mechanical "thing" and is rolling strong at 145k miles on a 2.4L with a manual Tranny and original clutch. We have a tow bar that carries our bikes and the roof rack hauls two kayaks for us everywhere. Of course, fuel consumption is pretty awful compared to todays motors but the build quality of this year (2001~3) models is very good, better it seems than the later builds cheap looking interior and console. Resale value is horrible on these - why? They were almost cult cars in the beginning.
With respect, Chrysler's image revamp began with the Neon, not the Prowler. It was the Neon that got first time buyers on dealer lots. Most dealers never got a prowler and those that did got a single car for the showroom. It was the same for the Viper. The PT owes it's existence to the Neon.
PT is only hated as it aged like a 90's music star when looked at by the youth of today. In its day almost all car mags liked it. The hate is like those silly clickbait pages who take a movie star from 1960 and show a picture of them today and say how bad they aged. As an actual car, it was average, not bad, not good. See many for sale with 200,000 on them, not too bad for an average 20-year-old car. They are loud inside, underpowered at speed (as were almost all 4 bangers in the 90's), wore out front-end parts, and brakes a bit quicker than average. There were and are much worse cars made and being made right now.
with proper maintenance its just as good as any car thats properly taken care of. I have a 2005 GT 2.4 Turbo for over 12 years. 160K mikes i put 120K of those one as a daily drivers. Parts are cheap, but mechanic labor charges are not. Good thing I’m a mechanic😊. The real complainers are people who have to pay for service and repairs. If you are cheap then this is not the car for you.
'04 GT owner. the H.O. setup is killer. Seriously great fun to have in a car this heavy. Yes it eats control arm and suspension bushings, yes the paint jobs were sketchy, yes they are riddled with oil leak issues, yes they have the dreaded cheap plastics including headlamps that frost over in a few years so bad you have to sand and protect them again and again.. but hot dang... does it haul a**. I've burned plenty of newer v6's and some same year v8's off the stop. ... certainly that has nothing to do with my oil leaks... nope. no way..
I remember being in secondary school in the early 2000's and these were so common, like every street had one lunatic that bought one. Shame as some retro-esque cars from that era looked good Rover 75 and Jaguar S-Type.
Got an '05 Classic 2.4 auto, on 150.000 km. Always goes, by has electrical gremlins, and they're a bitch to replace cambelts on. No ball of fire, but 150 bhp, and handles bloody well. Heavy on gas around town, especially in NZ, at $3.17/litre. Agree that the turning circle is farcical.
I don't think that they are the worst car. I'm actually thinking of buying one. The good things include practicality and comfort. Easy entry and driving position. The bad things are a few reliability issues, though mostly minor. The thing that annoys me the most is the awful turning circle and the poor fuel consumption. That maybe the deal breaker. Also parts supply here in New Zealand
The best way to enjoy a pt is to buy a diesel drop it 50mm add big antiroll bars get it mapped to 180 bhp and 360 pound of torque finish with a hurst short throw gearshift and go have some fun ! And yes that will be faster and more useable than the gt turbo
I have both, a '01 as a '07, really good cars. Was hit from behind in the '07 by a truck, the car was able to be driven home. Repairing the '01 so I can get about town to work again, and a couple more years the '01 can be plated as a collector car. Mine has the sunroof, heated seats, automatic, galvanised/galvanized steel rockers (I make panels from scratch for just about everything).
PT stands for : Personal Transport , Personal Truck, Party Time, Piece of shiT (thats what I called one of mine) In the end the PT Cruiser is catagorized as a Truck , hence the insurance is really really cheap.
My friend preorder her pt cruiser she was one of the first person to drive one people would come to her when pumping gas ask her what kind of car was that people like it just age badly
It seems the only people who like the PT have owned them, or still do. Like any car they require preventative maintenance or they run like poo. I have owned 4 of them. I had to catch up on maintenance on all of them but I like the challenge and appreciate the PT. Especially the Turbo models. They are fun to drive and pretty quick. If you want a track car buy a nice Mustang or Camaro. They are fun too!
just paid 2000 for a 2004 with 75k Manual I had to fix a few things but its fun and practical . I would only buy a Manual personally but the linkage bushings can go bad but super cheap easy to fix and and working perfectly
I purchased mine a year ago for 2500.00 with 130,000 miles and it has been at the mechanic for 3 months because it keeps over heating. I'm into it now 2100.
I had a late 90s / early 00s Chrysler it was quirky but if bits could fall off .... err they did I’m afraid and at 63k / and 6 years old it was about done for autobox failed engine ok but dash like a Christmas tree and early signs of rot underneath I waved it bye! I then bought a 2.0 petrol Rover which lasted 14 years sold it recently at 22 years old almost 200k no problems at all, no real rot even at 22 years old, despite Rovers slating by media it was the best car I ever had, never let me down nothing went wrong no engine problems, just basic servicing.
Americans trying to design a car for Europe never seems to go well. It wasn't as good as a compact MPV from Europe, but at least it tried to be different.
If this car had Japanese reliability with the same used pricing as today, I would buy one because I love the old design and lack of screens and the styling.
I owned a red PT Cruiser CRD for 13 years, and I unfortunately sold it when I retired. The diesel engine is from Mercedes and it is a dream. PT-CRDs are still being sold with 200000 miles / 300 000 on the clock. Last week I was lucky enough to pick one up with zero rust, and technically otherwise in great condition for €2500 (ca GBP 2200), and I‘m sure that it will accompany me for several years just as my first PT did. „Worst car in the world“ ??? Not by a looong shot !!! Note that I refer to the diesel version only with these comments : the reports on the petrol („gas“) versions range mostly from „bad“ to „catastrophic“ with regard to performance and consumption.
As usual, none of these American transplants were available in their home country with a diesel. I wish they were. Run forever and get better mileage than their petrol counterparts. What mileage did yours get?
@@mescko I sold my first PT with about 220 000 km = 137 000 miles on the clock. Here in Europe, PT CRD’s are still being sold with 300 000 km (185 000 miles) on the clock, but usually they are then close to the end for reasons other than the engine being the problem.
my experience...when they were new, the ass end liked to trade places with the front end going around corners in the rain.... My 2007 is lucky if it gets 13mpg... it costs $700 to change the plugs and wires as you must tear the engine apart to do it... the batteries for the car are tiny and wimpy cheaply made,,, you never know if they are going to start the car especially in the cold...you had better run the car at least a couple miles each time you start it,, or your car may not start the next time....You have to turn the battery on its side to barely squeeze them in....
The young gentleman did not mention that the back seats are removable, maybe he is not aware, which means he may not have studied the PT Cruiser enough in depth. Removing the back seats gives this vehicle a lot more cargo capacity. It is not a minor feature.
I always wanted a PT Cruiser, and was able to buy an '04 Touring Edition in 2005. Biggest piece of junk car I ever owned! Body was too big for the breaking system. I had to buy new rotors and breaks twice a year. Control arm bushings replaced every year to pass inspection as well.
I have a 2001 pt cruiser and it's driving me crazy, for the first 3 years I had various problems but the one I have now is it continues to overheat. I've changed the radiator , the radiator cap and last week I spent over 200 dollars to change the water pump and it continues to overheat. If anyone can suggest what might be happening it would be helpful.
Chrysler were the discount kings that why YT is full of old men whining that they can't buy a Wrangler for $20k anymore. The PT Cruiser was a first car for many Americans but it wasn't considered a bad car when it sold by any means. It inherited the buil;d quality problems from the Neon but it was more practical and had a 4 speed auto not the stone age 3 speed on the neon. Like the Marina it was just sold for too long.
No, not the worst. But pretty close. I’d class the Chevrolet Kalos as a pretty dire car (out of ones I’ve driven), but perhaps the aforementioned Chrysler Neon, FSO Polonez, CityRover, Morris Ital, Wartburg Knight, Vauxhall Frontera, and mk4 Ford Zodiac/Zephyr, strike me as being pretty hopeless cars........
Lovely car, specially with 3.0 V6 210hp. Nice grand touring. 20 Years and 81,000 kms are nothing but a sunday car. The best: ride and comfort, exterior design, vacune leather, underrated brand. The worst: sunroof leaks, bumpers material cracks easy along time.
I owned an 02 and an 08. Both were excellent, fabulous and I loved them. PT stood for Personal Transport, this pencil neck is wrong. BTW, pronounce ChrySler not ChryZler.
You always hear junky American cars from the 90s .i work on a lot of 90s-2000 Mercedes and BMW’s and they don’t get much worse than that as crappy plastic European cars , oil leaking , poor electronics
All of y’all in these comments are fronting!!! This car is horrible! If you broke, just say that, but don’t sit up here and front like this car is great. It’s ugly. Just because it “drives” good, doesn’t mean ANYTHING!! I bet if y’all was able to buy a Benz for the same price that you paid for the PT Cruiser, you would choose a Benz. So stop with the lies people!! Y’all are sick!
There appears to be lots of room because you aren't a lardey arse Yank Joe. Hank and Jolene found it a bit of a squeeze ........as for the claim about the death of retro design.....ahem....... FIAT 500?
My one experience with a pt cruiser was the most embarrassing experience of my life, it didn't help that when we were in it, a blue escort cosworth flew past. Embarrassing
@freepieanchipsgarage I was forced into the pt cruiser, I was told I was gonna get dropped of at the train station, but he drove me home. I dont want someone seeing in a pt cruiser.
a lady owned one in white. I'm sorry but the bonnet looked like a toilet cover, and the rear arches are not really retro. Sorry, I don't like it at all.
Oh dear. How can you defend the indefensible? Lol. Sorry, but these things are hideous. I don't want to be transported around in a vehicle that looks like a hearse for very many years yet. And even then only if I really have to.
@freepieanchipsgarage I fully understand badly built using poor quality materials as a wholly unwanted and unacceptable concept. I like retro cars. What I don't want is retro styling with retro build quality. I depend on my car for my mobility. A car I cannot trust is simply no good to me.
@freepieanchipsgarage you make a very valid point. And while I agree completely, I personally have reached the point in my life where I just want a car that is reliable, comfortable, and not too much of a drain on me financially.
@freepieanchipsgarage very true. I do appreciate classics for what they are, but unfortunately my lack of storage dictates that I only have room for one car. If there is a classic car that can be used every day, I'd love to know what it is.

No, in my opinion the Citroën Ami crica 1970 was a disaster, it was all we could afford and always in the garage for repairs
This video is mostly just me being bullied.
I like PT...
Classed as a 'truck' by Chrysler so it didn't have to meet car safety standards in the US or so I'm told.
You were told correctly. The US has odd laws regarding pickups and MPVS.
pt cruiser was a hire car, and was bought by the arm full by hire car companys'. Thats where 90% of the sales came from.
Sir your driving on the wrong side of the road LoL
Not for the UK! 😁
@@ClassicsWorldUK sorry it was a joke
It’s based iff but much worse than the neon, manual feels good on those and they have a much more sophisticated rear suspension
Retro styling continued all through the next decade… Mustang, Challenger, etc.
2005 5 speed 179500 still going original clutch
Thinking of buying a 2005 with 64000 miles. He wants $4600
Actually I like them nowt wrong with a bit of retro
I think that it's light years ahead of my mum's old 1.3 Austin Montego that wouldn't start in damp weather. I hated that car.
It serves a good purpose... if you like it's design, it confirms that your taste is in your arse.
Thanks for that. It sure isn’t the worst car in the world. I love mine 🥰
The only American car i liked and the only American car sell in Europe.
What's everyone's opinion on the Peugeot 406 Coupé
Lovely car, specially with 3.0 V6 210hp. Nice grand touring. 20 Years and 81,000 kms are nothing but a sunday car. The best: ride and comfort, exterior design, vacune leather, underrated brand. The worst: sunroof leaks, bumpers material cracks easy along time.
I owned an 02 and an 08. Both were excellent, fabulous and I loved them. PT stood for Personal Transport, this pencil neck is wrong. BTW, pronounce ChrySler not ChryZler.
A chi piace e a chi no!! Io ce l'ho, mi piace ed è comodissima unica pecca il consumo!!
Yeah, the car Doug demuro ran over😂
You always hear junky American cars from the 90s .i work on a lot of 90s-2000 Mercedes and BMW’s and they don’t get much worse than that as crappy plastic European cars , oil leaking , poor electronics
Very reliable car
I love my Pt cruiser !
Ne slažem se. Vozio sam ga 8 godina.nikakvih problema nisam imao. Jako pouzdan i prostran auto u kojem se osječas kao lord.
I’ll take my Cruiser over a Benz every day of the month.
There junk but jeep compass and patriot dodge caliber are worse then the pt
I think pt cruiser is a terrible car very un reliable car you can't trust it
I felt sorry as soon as I saw Joe had to drive this
There appears to be lots of room because you aren't a lardey arse Yank Joe.
Escort Cosworths are embarrassing, true.
@@MajorKlanga nah, a dream for me is an esCos, this was a modified one aswell
@freepieanchipsgarage have I annoyed a pt cruiser owner lol
Ahhhh did she tell you to sod of then 😢 been there didn't do that either 😅
It was pretty bad
a lady owned one in white. I'm sorry but the bonnet looked like a toilet cover, and the rear arches are not really retro.
Sorry, I don't like it at all.
Thank you sir. Agreed.
@@Richard-Bullock In the U.S. garaged PT Cruisers still look pretty nice. Plastic doesn't age well in the sun. I see quite a few of these still looking pretty good, many others are beat
