    I always liked the PT Cruiser, not the funky "Grandma car" that it ended up being, but the retro themed car it could have been. I think Bryan Nesbitt was headed in a good direction, but was limited to the platform it was based on, which was the Neon. I think it had potential to be a little modern hot rod, which you can see in the aftermarket options for it, like a panel van version made for Barrett Jackson. Maybe if it had been developed for the 300/charger platform instead? Bryan Nesbitt also designed the Chevy HHR, which is similar, and also could have the potential to be a little modern hot rod, which they tried with the SSR.

      Thinking back the 2000s is quite a crazy period, a lot of interesting things comes out of that era, including those retro designs. I've always loved the look of Plymouth Prowler.

    • @tobynobel5671
      @tobynobel5671 2 роки тому +3

      @@aw3706 the Prowler was great, alot of people wished it would have been V8 powered. I think my favorite 90's, early 2000s vehicles are the Dodge Sidewinder, the Dodge Power Wagon concept from 1999, which was actually pretty impressive if you look at the specs for the time, also I like the Super HEMI8 concept. The grille was terrible but the overall design was awesome and very 50s. Especially with it's interior, and windshield, it just needed a little more attention to detail. All these are missed opportunities, and missed potentials, which could have been really cool vehicles.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 9 місяців тому

      @@tobynobel5671 The problem with the Prowler was the materials used for the frame and body. Chrysler claimed it couldn't fit a V8 in there, yet Nesbitt designed it around the 360ci engine. The real reason was the body itself couldn't handle much horsepower or torque, as it flexed to a degree that Chrysler execs feared was dangerous. This was why you didn't see it with a turbo 4 cylinder, like the GT Cruiser eventually got. Had Chrysler not cheaped out and gone with light materials, and instead built it like a true performance car, the Prowler may have been more than an interesting footnote. We may be talking about it like we do the PT Cruiser.

    The PT Cruiser had one of the best packaged interior of any small car. Very versatile and roomy. I'm 6'5" tall and fit great in it. I had a new one in 2001 and now have a 2002 that I got cheap. The Chevy HHR was a poor copy with a lot less cargo capacity.

    I have a 2004 (bought new) purple plum mist pearl PT Cruiser . Immediatly after I purchased it I put new low profile tires with 17" Datun rims. Really low to ground. I learned I have to be careful not to bump the front bumper to cement parking blocks.. Eventually the bumper broke off on the top sides from hitting the cement blocks. To avoid buying a new one I made brackets & glued em with JB welding glue. It's perfect.I love my PT CRUISER

      I agree, the style done in this video just looks too modern..
      An idea I had was, make it a 3 door style coupe, pull the windshield back and stretch the hood and give it sort of a Plymouth Prowler look, keep it a hardtop and not a convertable. Do the front fenders up with round headlights like you said but LED. Slope the rear trunk area down like the old 1930s style coupes from Ford, Chevy, Plymoth, Murcury etc.

    To set the record straight, Bryan designed the first package car of the PT Cruiser. It was an art deco inspired car. The idea was to make the bumpers external to the vehicle as a way to visually shorten the front and rear overhangs. It was a proposal to replace to the 2 door Neon and help inspire sales for Plymouth. The Neon when it came out was actually a brandless automobile that was sold in both Dodge and Plymouth showrooms with no distinctions other than color. The Plymouth boys wanted something more specific. Bryan's original package car sat for about a couple of years and went from studio to studio in hopes finding a theme. At the time, this was new territory for all companies. The word "Crossover" hadn't been invented yet. I was in Studio 3 and came up with the idea to combine the essence of the Prowler which I worked on (the production version- the concept was done by Kevin Verduyn, Tim Anness and Richard Kong) the Neon, which I did and the utility of Chrysler's brilliant minivans. Sketches were born and the idea of this hotrod inspired vehicle started to take shape. I even brought in 4 of the 17inch wheels of the Prowler and put on the clay. We tightened the enginebox more under Bill Dayton's leadership. The problem we had was both Lutz and Gale couldn't agree on a theme. Bob wanted retro (which we were doing) and the awesome Tom Gale wanted contemporary. I was the monkey in the middle trying to do both while repackaging parts of the vehicle. We were changing themes once to twice a week. I might add that Ken Carlson was on the other side of that full-size model. Bryan came into the studio while we were working on the theme and did some beautiful sketches inline with my hotrod approach. In the end Tom Gale decided to step inline with Bob's wishes and we decided to hang Bryan's sketches on my side of the model as I was on vacation. That process took two weeks as everything else was done. The clay sculptors did a great job. That would have been mostly Chris Knack. I thought I was out of the PT Cruizer (it's original name by the way-we lost that to BMW Cruizer the motorbike). The show vehicle came into focus. I was sent to Europe to get indoctrinated on their auto and people culture for a week. I came back enlightened. Bryan and I worked on the show vehicle and I picked three tones and textures. Yellow for the body, silver an aluminum like accent and carbon fiber. We both did proposals, I really liked his monocoque body and we were off and running. I was then asked to do the interior. The console was very Harley tank inspired. The dash inspired more from Boyd's Post Modern hotrod approach. Bryan and I both decided to make the show vehicle cleaner and more shear than the overly retro production. That was done in the surfacing and Chris Knacks brillant sculpting hand. Bryan and I continued on to GM. I was there before he was and asked if he'd like to come over. The HHR was really a node to Lutz since Rick Wagner was bringing him over. The car was mostly done. If I recall, Thamer Hanona did that vehicle. Bryan came over and changed some things on it. I wasn't in his studio you would have to ask him on that one. Chris came over too by the way. I'm writing this because the story is never what you realize. There are lots of people involved in the process who never get mentioned. I've tried my best to honor the talent and commitment of those I've worked with. By the way, I designed the exterior of Chrysler 300C that came out in 2004 but that's another story. Smiles to all that might read this.

Mini midlife crisis and got rid of my soccer mom van and drove around in the car I fell in love with when I was younger! Her name is Daisy and she's still with me! Mind you, not running well at ALL but I promise her all the time that ONE DAY, she'll be as good as new! I LOVE that freaking car so much it's actually stupid!! ALSO...I know why they had that huge bumper and WISH it had been on mine!! The grill is soooooo looooow that it got stuck on EVERYTHING! Pulled that damn thing off three times (kids did it twice!) and now, duct tape holds her together! It's cool...I STILL love her!! 😂❤️

    My PT had one previous owner and he got one of the first off the line. He did some serious work to it. He added all sorts of chrome inside, outside and under the hood. I'm amazed at how many aftermarket things he found. Completely chrome bumper covers, which I damaged and can't find a replacement.
    I have a garage full of the parts he replaced out and all the extras he planned to add. Led light inside and out. He passed away and I got it after about 5 years in the garage. He had cool looking 1930 style rear tire covers that came down about half way. Not easy to change a tire, but not too bad. I also got boxes full of plaques and trophies he won in various car shows.
    Being over 20 years old, it still looks mighty fine, but all that chrome and bling is wearing out and can't be replaced easily. I'm hoping a redesign would spur on more aftermarket options.
    I bought mine because when they came out, I always said I would wait for a second hand one. And because it is a standard manual shift. No one in the family can drive one except me.

    Still own and drive weekly my Aug 2000 built PT Cruiser Limited Edition (bought new). I've kept it maintained, cleaned and waxed (twice a year New Finish). other than having the headed rebuilt/decked and the block deck faced to match. It has happy gone over150 thousand and counting looking new. Being 6'-1" it is quite easy to enter and exit and super comfy on long drives (coast to coast). Mine came with fog lights in the packets below the bumper. Your example this option is deleted looking like air scoops. Mospeed motors sports made a smooth rear and nose fascia that eliminated the bumper look without deleting the impact absorbing cross bars. There was on aftermarket design called "the PT Brusier" as well.

    Actually, the concept PT Cruiser is called the Plymouth Pronto Cruiser. It's yellow with 2 doors and is more of what we wanted when it came out. It debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in 1998 if I recall. The hot rod style came from me and was actually a combination of the Plymouth Prowler, Mini-van and the Neon. This combination plus the rich American heritage of 30's cars and Boyd's 90's era hotrods was the inspiration.

    When the PT Cruiser was designed every car since the beginning of the 80's was stylistically the same. When it launched it was very popular but unfortunately there's a fairly big, very vocal group of people out there that absolutely hate style and loathed the PT Cruiser. They talk about how ugly the car is and when you talk about how it was cool and different they bring up a ton of boring cars and say how they are beautiful and fantastic cars. Personally I loved the design and appreciated the fact that it was unapologetic in being form over function while maintaining what a driver needs from a car.

    You should also redesign/ modernize the Chrysler 300M. Also make a video on a Chrysler airflow production model

    This time around you kept the original grill, instead of modernizing it by doing an all-black weave design, like you did in 2019.
    Any particular reason, or it just felt ok as it is this time? What changed? :)

    I inherited a 2007 PT Cruiser from my brother, who sadly passed away in July this year, & I also had a 2010 Chrysler Sebring convertible, which I sold, & man do I REGRET IT!!! 💯 😢
    For some reason I get like 14mpg, & the thing is slow as a snail, the seats are uncomfortable as hell, compared to my Sebring, I love the looks of the car, but that's where the love stops! 😂

    Believe it or not, there is a PT cruiser in this exact color about 10 minutes away from my house...in TOKYO JAPAN! Talk about being sold around the world.

    Production version is better than concept because bumpers. They reminds old bumpers. Concept looks like tuning version of it. Kinda like Hotrod vs old car

    I like the classic PT cruiser but Chrysler should make it with a little more room width was so at least five people could sit comfortably and the back should be a little longer and the back up lights should be a little higher up

    I was on board with your design, despite the busy side view, until the headlights. I really thought you were going to make the upper grille extension the light.

  • @dwightsbeetfarms3611
    @dwightsbeetfarms3611 2 роки тому

    I would prefer it having a light bar (I was hoping you won't add the actual headlights). I think the design looks overcomplicated with these headlights, but it's just my opinion.

    How about a reverse approach?
    Take a retro car (e.g. HHR or Beetle or again the P/T) and try to make it look even more retro!
    If the car looks good even with round chrome side mirrors, then retro level 100 is reached.

    You probably won’t see this but I would really love if you redesigned the Chrysler 300! I think the back looks great but the headlights look dated and haven’t been updated in years.

    I think Chrysler did a good job of doing what they did to revamp the PT cruiser. I'm glad they did this. As a matter of fact I've ridden in one from the early 2000s and I can tell you they're very nice cars. But as for the 2022 version of the PT cruiser? I'm glad to see that they did the right thing and revamping it. I think we're going to start seeing a lot of these cars being put out and sold. And I also understand that the price is right and wheel of Fortune might end up giving some of those cars away. Who knows if they do that that would be great. Because I'll tell you what this would give Christ her a big boost.

    Please don't lower it! That's the main reason I bought mine, with my Back issues- it's designed higher than the typical car....the height really helps me getting in/out with less pain. I wish designers would account for some with physical disabilities- not everyone can bend to the ground anymore let alone get off of it!

    Speaking of the Chrysler Airflow, do you think you could redesign the original to what you think it would look like if Chrysler made the concept look inspired from it in terms of design and not just the name?
    Kind of like what ford did with the new Bronco and 5th generation Mustang, and Volkswagen with the Beetle (A5).

    I just got a 2010 pt cruiser for free. 84k original miles and not a scratch on it. Grandmother gave it to me and I absolutely hated these cars. I'm a truck guy. So best believe I'll be tinting the windows so my truck buddies don't see me in this damn thing. But free is free and gas prices are high. It's my new daily. Funny this video popped up
