That Phantom, 002 was being flown by a good friend of mine,. Dave Tanner was an RAF test pilot who did his test pilot training in the US, I think at Pax River. As part of his training he did a 6 month attachment to the Royal Navy. This was I think his first carrier landi g and was filmed by the BBC for a TV series. He went on to fly Tornadoes in Gulf War 1
F-4 Phantom, we had them in Alaska, Viet Nam, and Thailand, USAF 1968-71. They are 1 nasty-wicked-bad looking aircraft! can't get enough of them....buddy of mine got to back seat in one......Beach Boys #1 band ever
@@larrybaker5316 When i was a kid and becoming hooked on all things aircraft my Dad said to me that the F4 was a "get out the way" plane Curious i asked what he meant "If you look in your rear view and see that thing you'd get out the F@#£ing way" 😁
As a veteran in the US Air Force stationed at Homestead Air Force Base from 71 to 74 and a proud member of 726 TCS we were part of a squadron of f4e phantoms that were on standby to deploy to Southeast Asia. With the de-escalation of the war because of the anti participation campaigns we've remained on standby until my discharge. There's nothing like videos as this to remind me of that aircraft that was so prominent to our defense at that time. Thanks to you for posting. God bless our servicemen .
In 1988 I was fortunate to spend a few hours aboard the Clemenceau as part of a sailor exchange where they sent sailors to Enterprise. We were deployed at flight ops. The French were great hosts and I was struck by how everyone on the hangar bay working on aircraft were wearing flip flops. They have us some wine or beer with our lunch. We observed launches of recon jets and our guide was an enlisted pilot. I thought this is very French!
A buccaneer among F4 just to spot the few ones who follow the topic of F4. Thanks from France, for the footage, a bit of nostalgy of very beast of steel and fury!
I grew up in Cocoa beach Fl., in the 60's and 70's, my Dad was an Engineer at Cape Canaveral. we lived just north of Patrick AFB (now SFB) and at the time had a squadron of F4 Phantom II's. Me and my buds used to ride our bikes down A1A and park right by the runway end and watch the Mighty F4's take off right over or heads. I had an F4 model hanging from my bedroom ceiling and was going to be a fighter pilot. I DQ'd on my first interview for jets as I found out I didn't have uncorrected 20-20 vision. So off to Engineering College (a recently retired Aerospace/Computer Engineer with America's largest defense contractor's Aero company.
Damn those Phantoms dropped like bricks on the final approach! - no wonder the pilots were adjusting the power all the way in. Anybody that can land on those flat tops is beyond an exceptional aviator.
Traded visits with a couple of RN sailors while in Portsmouth, England. They visited Independence and we visited Ark Royal. Great times, Then we went and got drunk.
I was a Forward Observer for a Light Infantry company in Vietnam in 1968. I only heard Phantoms when we were in deep trouble and needed close air support. And yes I can still hear the airborne Saviours in my sleep occasionally.
The British re-engined the Phantom with the Rolls Royce Spey engine. This engine was larger and had less thrust but it was a British product. (The US did something similar when it bought Harriers, substuting some US-made system so it's pretty normal.) Anyway, the joke in the Fleet Air Arm was: What happens when you spay a Phantom? It gets fat and slow.
@maryshafer I don't believe in a thing such as a slow Phantom. But I do understand what you're saying. More than likely, the RN did it for logistical and financial reasons. It is easier to get spare parts technical support and delivery to the fleet faster. In hindsight it makes a lot of sense sort of like the concept with diesel engines. Extremely durable the block is not under unnecessary stress and abundant torque. It's obvious the FAA was looking for durability and trying to get the most hours out of the engines they could. Coming from a Yank I like the RN in the 1970s they meant bidness.
@georgesykes394 The Spey-engined Phantom could still do a ten-ton run no problem. It wasn't slow, just slightly slower. Rolls Royce makes great engines, among the best ever and I like the naming of them after rivers. I wasn't criticizing the British, just telling the joke, which I think I read in Uncle Roger's column. The kind people at Edwards AFB gave me a Phantom ride that is one of the highlights of my life.
American army sof guy. Absolutely loved working with my Brit sof brothers down range. But i also love these Brit F-4s and their navy. I called in Brit cas support alot and you always came. Thank you.
The efficiency of the crew is seen in the short separation in time between the landing Phantoms (less than 40 seconds). This takes drill and professionalism, so a sorry mistake that CVA-01 was cancelled.

Why did we not build 3 carriers that size so we'd always have one at sea ? Instead of those two clumsy, oversized, part time missile magnets that can't fly half decent maritime attack aircraft nor posses AEW. ????
This was awesome. My dad was in an F-4 squadron in the USAF, it holds a special place in my heart.

Why do people refer to this beast as ugly? It is a stunner image of beautiful brutality ❤

F4, This the proper evidence a brick can fly with the appropriate thrust.

I love the shape and the colour of the British Phantom!

F-4 Phantom, proof that with enough power a brick can fly. I worked on these beasts from 66 to 68 at Davis Monthan in Tucson, AZ, good times.

Tell me, the two sexiest and meanest looking fighter jets ever flown were the F-4 Phantom and the F-14 Tomcat.

This track goes so well with this
Even the custard😂
cheers
Phantoms, banshees, 14's and 18's.... the happy times will never come again.
Bravo! I love this!
Incredible footage!
When they came in low over my firebase in Vietnam, they always scared the crap out of me. No sound until they're past.

F-4. Это визуальный символ холодной войны. Реальный мускул силы. Самый брутальный са Олег всех времен.
Nothing like seeing a Phantom in AB going off the bow of the carrier at night. 😮
Excellent video!
Brutal but beautiful.
A triumph of brut force over aerodynamics 😁
Very entertaining. Of all the F4 Phantom videos, I seldom see those of the FAA.

There is a chemical smoke abatement that can be added to eliminate the smoke.
