    Learn how to turn your crochet work after finishing a row of stitches from Lion Brand Yarn's Andrea Lemire in this Howcast video.
    Hey, I'm Andrea Lemire, the education coordinator here at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio. I'm going to show you some really cool techniques for beginning crochet, and hopefully, you'll have as much fun as I have with it. Okay, lets get started.
    So, now that you've finished your first row of whatever stitch you were working in, you do need to do what's called turning, to get to the next row. And this happens at the end of every single row that you work, until the piece is as long as you want it to be. So, I'm all the way at the left side of my work now. If you're left handed, it's going to be the right side. So, now I need to make what's called a turning chain, to get to the height that the next row's going to be in. It's different, depending on what stitch is coming next. Don't worry about what stitch you just worked the last row in. All that matters is what the very next stitch you're working is. If it's a single crochet, I'm going to chain one. For the half-double, here, I would chain the second. For the double, I would chain the third. And for the triple, or the treble stitch, I would chain 4. So I'd have a really tall chain for the treble. But I'm working my next row in single crochet. So I'm gonna stick with a short chain of one. So now I can turn my work. So I'm just gonna flip it to go back towards the left for me, and now I'm ready to work my first stitch. To find it, you wanna look at the base of that turning chain you just made. And it's the space closest to the right side of the fabric. When you're looking at the tops of your stitches, and going in that first space, here, you want to make sure that you are seeing 2 pieces of yarn there. You only saw one when you were working your first row of stitches into your chain. But here, you should see 2. And the reason for that is, we want to go under the entire stitch. Which is made up of 2 pieces of yarn at it's top. So now that I'm in it, I can pull my yarn fully under that stitch onto my hook. And then I can finish whatever stich I'm working. So, since I'm working the single, I'm just yarning over, and pulling through 2. So my next stitch, I wanna go in that next space. When I'm in it, check and make sure you are seeing those 2 pieces of yarn that you're under. That's the full top of that stitch. And I'm gonna work a single crochet, yarn over and pull it through. You have 2 loops. Yarn over, pull through both. And so, you wanna work in every space, all the way across your work. And when you go in each space, just make sure that you're under the full top of that stitch. So those 2 pieces of yarn. So that's turning your work. Again, that happens at the end of every row, for the rest of your piece.

      Anna Allen I agree. this is right for me too. i can better see and autocorrect what I'm doing at this point. I knew to and do turn but keeping even sides really a problem if you don't know visually where to put the next step and how to check this step before continuing the new row. so thanks to video creater and thanks for showing up close, using thicker yarn and using a good visual shot too that is focused as well and angled through the whole demonstration. oh, and thanks for good verbal understanding throughout the whole thing too

    I appreciate your video! I first learned how to make a chain and a single crochet when I was about 8. My mom was crocheting something at the time, but I don't remember what it was. That was the last time I even thought about Crocheting until I became pregnant with our first baby. Thirty two years ago I made a beautiful blanket for our first son, but I got all kinds of help. I was in over my head, but I'm stubborn, so now I've made blankets, same pattern but different color patterns for each of our 3 grandchildren. Now I'm making something for my younger son, and your video is the exact thing I needed to know to get beyond my chain and first row using dc. Thank you!

    The chains that are made at the end before turning the work are how it goes upwards. You're building the height at the end for the next row's stitches. Single crochet is 1 chain, half-double crochet is 2 chains, double crochet is 3 chains b/c that's the height of each stitch. After you make those chains, turn the work. I think that's what you were asking. (E.g., for right-handed folks, when reaching the left-most position, make the chains, then turn.)

      shyanha ... thank you for that info.. I’ve been a bit confused on how many to chain when doing various stitches other than SC and your comment spelled it out simply and clearly (THANKS). I don’t know if you will see my comment but if you do could you help clarify this for me .... I am on row 20 of an afghan using DC, after I chain and turn my work I’ve been going under the “V’s” of my entire project and not the not the spaces. Yikes!! have I been crocheting incorrectly this entire time?

  • @shyanha
    @shyanha 12 років тому

    Yes, it is literally turning the work around. You've probably figured that out by now, but thought I'd toss that in there. So you do the chain (my friend calls it 'in the air' since it's not in a stitch), then after you chain the height for the next stitch, flip the work around. An alternative is to learn how to crochet ambidextrously so you never have to turn, you just go back and forth.

    I've been crocheting for a long time, learned when I was like 8 from my mom. I picked it up again in my 30's and been doing a lot of it the past ten years, so I'm fairly seasoned. My question about turning is whether we should turn left to right or right to left. Does it matter or make any difference, is there an advantage to one over the other, like a nicer looking edge? Everyone on UA-cam seems to do it differently. I learned one way as a kid but am seeing many people do it the opposite way. I'd love if everyone could share their input, which way they do it and whether or not they find it "better" than the other way. Thanks in advance!

    • @valeriedabaghian6561
      @valeriedabaghian6561 5 років тому

      Katarina- I think either is okay as long as you turn the same way every time. If you look down on her work from above, she is turning clockwise. Other people turn their work counterclockwise. I only run into trouble when I am inconsistent, sometimes turning one way and sometimes the other. That can result in a sloppy edge. Hope that helps.
