That is much easier than guessing how long of a tail you need. It’s a cool method though for a smaller project. Maybe a washcloth.

Thank you! I just used this to start 2 new projects. I'm only a beginner and it was hard at first, but I soon got the hang of it. I doubt is I go back to single chains ever again. 😁
Wow! Thank you! I learned something new! I don’t know what this way of starting a foundation row in crocheting, but it reminds me of the long-tail caston in knitting. You clearly showed how it gets done. And you clearly demonstrated why the other two you made were not the best way to do a foundation row. 👍🏽
I’m trying to learn with UA-cam videos how to crochet. I have saved this because the foundation chain for me is a messy, difficult beginning 🥴🤢🤮. Many thanks, and, blessings to you ✝️
I totally love the idea of this foundation stitch. I’ve used it for like small projects and scarves. I use the other method when I’m doing like really long projects where you’re not gonna necessarily know how much you need to pull out of skein. With my luck, I would probably pull out way too much, and have waste yarn.
Oh so all you did was a single crochet foundation row. You can also do a half double foundation row as well as a double crochet foundation row. To me it’s all about saving time when your pattern calls for a gazzilion chains to start with. For example: start with 269 chains. Row 2: single crochet in the 2nd chain and every chain to the end. So instead I just do the single crochet foundation chain. Saves so much time and your foundation chains turns out so much more flexible and straight, no so strained and wonky. I love it!
No one is interested in negative comments. If you are going to complain, DON’T WATCH! Thank you for sharing this technique. I’m going to try it on my next project.

Clever!👍 The only thing that prevents "my" crochet work from curling is to either use a larger hook or be extremely conscientious about my tension because I tend to crochet with a tension that's usually too tight but this does look it might help but definitely looks like a really great way to achieve a sturdy foundation row for many crochet projects. I will certainly try using this method when I make my next blanket. Thanks so much for sharing this!👍😊
If you are worried about not having enough tail and you can use a second ball of yarn (or perhaps even the two ends of one ball ? - I haven’t tried it.), then you can do this technique without guessing a tail length. For a right-handed person make a slip knot in each yarn ball. Place the two slip knots on your hook and hold the yarn from the right-hand loop (if the hook is pointing to the left) as you would normally. Let the yarn from the other loop rest between the first finger and thumb of your left hand. Yarn over with the right-hand yarn and pull through both loops. Then proceed with the technique - wrapping the left-hand yarn from the front, up and over, then yarn over with the right and pull through both. It does mean cutting the left-hand yarn at the end of the chain and weaving in a couple of extra tails but there is no stressing over the right length of tail to leave for your chain (and this uses a lot of tail for a short length of chain). Hope this helps.🙂
Thank you for sharing this. I have been using this icord technique to make small projects with and enjoy it, but could not work out the best way to do it for large projects like blankets for a double bed or larger. I don’t know why I never thought to do it a you explained but now that you said it, it makes so much sense. Thank you! I am about to start a mosiac baby blanket and am going to give this method a try.

Once I learned foundation crochet was a thing, I'll never go back to chains. Always the right amount of stitches, has the stitch-look on both top and bottom. I did find out that to avoid curling, it's all in the tension as you draw up the chain that will be what the hook goes into for the next stitch, it'll try to be loose and if you let it, the next stitch going in uses up that slack and keeps the stitch row straight.
Thank you for sharing. I discovered this several months ago and it is the only way I begin all my foundation chains now. Wish there was a trick to get rid of the trailing seams when crocheting in the round. im working on it.😊

There are a couple other methods to start a project. I love the base stitch as demonstrated as your 3rd showing. But also you can start your 1st row off of your initial chain by placing your hook through the bottom bar. Which is to say crochet on the underside of your starting chain. This also leaves a clean edge. Another method is to make your starting chain with a half size bigger, or smaller hook than the pattern calls for. For example: if a pattern I start calls for a 6mm hook and I know my chains are tight, I will use a 6.5mm hook to make my initial chain. If I know my chains are a bit on the loose side, than I’ll start the project base chain with a 5.5mm hook.
